The big deal about her coming out was that she was the face of the WNBA's heterosexual athlete for a long time since that sport has been battling the sterotype that it is a lesbian breeding ground. The fact that Swoopes was married, had a child by her husband, went on maternity leave, had the baby, came back, got divorced then came out a few years later did turn a few heads.

Everyone knows that the lesbian breeding ground (surely there is a better term than breeding ground...) is at the college level. By the time an athlete gets to the pros, they should know who they are sexually.
