View Full Version : Does Anyone Ever Visit the Columns Section?
i know i don't spend any time over there, Do you guys? Are we neglecting our friends who actually supply this site with actual content? Were they neglecting us and that's why we stopped seeing if they could come out and play? We peoples, fess up.

I haven't been over there much lately, but that's because I haven't taken exception with much that D.K.Holm has said recently about why people attend ballet.

I read the columns, but rarely go to the columns side of the board. If I have something to say to the author I usually just send an e-mail.

What would be really bad is if the columns section was filled with tons of new messages every day. The fact that no one comments on your column is a sign of high praise in this community.
Yeah, what jj said.
I'd agree with you too Robbo, but ya lost me. Don't feel bad, it's not you, it's me.

I still read a handfull of the hearty goodness that is the content of our great site , but since the forum ...? Restructured? It's weird over there, too many different forums that are not easy to get in and out of, like before. And it seems now, that when something drops off the bottom the page it's gone forever.
I assume the contributors of the columns are psychic and sense my love and appreciation for them.
In reply to Dave:
Oh, so that's how it is.
I guess I haven't noticed the bitching, well, lately anyway. Though I have been trying to skip over the bitchy crap I don't need to read. My time is very valuable... not really, but I'm practicing incase it ever becomes so.
I wonder if that means everyone is praising me if no one replys to my post...

I read game on, kuntecky fried wrasslin` from time to time, and sometimes the dvd stuff like whatever schlock b-movies with misty mundae and so forth.
I haven't really read a comic since monkey man though, and I havent been to Brian's site since then either. The crap british postal service burned all my bridges with ANP.com :(

I dont think I've really read a column religiously since A.K. left
I would literally count the days for his articles
I read KFR regularly though and Tip's 101
It's harder to talk about the columns though, often the writers dont check the threads regularly and even if they did... what could you say?
"nice writing dude"
"...thanks"
"yeah, your welcome"

"Ouch."
Try not to take it personally man, I'm extremely picky about articles that I read
I usually only spend a small amount of time on the net so I'm kinda fussy about how long I take out to read some of the regulars
I'll check out the news and my favourites but if an article's subject matter doesnt interest me a great deal I will usually steer clear
Back in 03 I would have read One Hand Clapping often but, as you've said yourself, your busy schedule has altered a little bit how its set out
I wouldnt suggest you change it (far from such) I'm sure you've probably gained several more readers because of the same reason
... why do I feel like I'm trying to calm down my insulted girlfriend?
Anwyay, just letting you know that my original comment wasnt aimed at the lack of skill/interest with the other writers at the site
Just that the ones I mentioned were the ones that tickeled me the most

It's harder to talk about the columns though, often the writers dont check the threads regularly.I think Lynch was the last columnist/cartoonist to regularly post. Until he got a little full of himself, he and his lap-dog were fun to have around the community. When Kendra(?) did the Forrest of Dead Trees column would post a little bit too. Made me look forward to her columns all the more. That and I worked at a book store at the time.
Ian does things pretty regularly but only once a week, and Britt started the Fantasy League this year, so he's apart of the community, but he doesn't ask us about his column very much.
I think we all realize that the columnists have other things to do than post on the MPS boards, but if we felt like they actually wanted our feedback, I'm sure we'd oblige with more regularity.

I used to post regularly in the columns area (mostly during version 1 of this board), but it seems that some of the writers didn't like it when I criticized their points, so I stopped. ;)

It' like the car business: No on ever writes in to tell you how great their car is, but those with a gripe are very vocal. The lack of posts may not reflect a lack of interest in the material, merely a lack of disagreement with what was written.

I visit, but rarely post in there. I do read some of the columns though. I read Strange Impersonation, Addicted to Bad, One Hand Clapping, Mail Shoot and TV Recommendations regularly and others if something strikes my fancy.

I read all of the columns on here. Just don't ever feel the need to talk about them. I did want to talk about the Trailer Park a few times and tried. However, it seems no one else wanted to. For the most part, I just don't feel the need to discuss the columns unless I don't like them. So I guess it is a good thing I don't post over there.

Dude, you get this entire site and message board for FREE. I work my ass off on this site, and so do a lot of other people, all to just offer up some entertaining diversions. So when I read that you think things like the Mail Shoot are stupid, and that you take time to post that you never, ever ever even bother to read some of the other columns, it makes me want to ban your ass and get you off this site and this board for good. After all, from your own words, you don't like or appreciate any of it. So how about you keep such crap to yourself from now on, or leave.
I don't even understand the "Mail Shoot is stupid" line. It might not be to your taste, but it's just us answering people's mail and being helpful when we can. Again, if you somehow find that stupid, keep it to yourself, the same way I do when I read most of your posts.

Yeah, I miss Reuben Ham a lot, too. I think the Good Charlottes of the world finally drove him crazy. Been trying to find time to get another music column going soon, and we're close. Thanks for the words about the site, too. Honestly, I'm fine with other people not liking it or whatever, but I just don't want to have that thrown in my face at this site.

Although I loved the "Trouble with Tribbles" episode, I think that this situation is better referenced in a quote from "Hoosiers" (courtesy of imdb since I can't remember crap):
"Look, mister, there's two kinds of dumb, a guy that gets naked and runs out in the snow and barks at the moon, and a guy who does the same thing in my living room. First one don't matter, the second one you're kinda forced to deal with."
For the record, I loooooove the Mailshoot. I do wish there was a new book column though. I miss Kendra and all her dead trees...

Is that out of the realm of possibility? are more columns on the agenda here?

I find the columns I read the most have no immitations on the site i.e. KFR and 101

I know, some folks have left and those spots haven't been filled as quickly as I would've liked, or as quickly as I managed to fill in the past. Book columns are tough, because the sheer time involved in reading books and then writing about them makes them tough. But beyond that, I haven't been looking to add much more lately for a couple reasons. One is that I felt like we just had too much daily content every day--five or six new columns a day is just too much for anyone to deal with or read. More than that, it's impossible for me to keep up with, too. Even though most everyone on the site now is able to format their own columns, there's still a lot of work required on my end every single day, too, and it's just more than I'm able to handle every day. I've gotten used to never taking a day off from the site, but between the job at IDW, writing comics for IDW at night, and trying to keep my other stuff on the site going regularly, plus prepping for a new kid, I just can't quite manage to cultivate and add new columns lately.
Doesn't mean we won't; just means that I'm even more selective about what we add and when it'll happen.
It's amazing to me the number of columns that've come and gone, and also amazing to me the number of people who've been here from the start and stuck around. The Ming and I are talking about some new stuff and freshening the place up a bit over the next few months, though.
Maybe we can have a Poop Shoot Reunion column or something when the next anniversary comes around. Just to check in with who was here and what they are up to now... I think that would be fun...

I always liked the mail shoot, because it's similar to what we do here...ask a question and get a reaction. Plus you can see what other readers are thinking about...or realize that some readers are not thinking at all.
What I have always found so cool about the columns is that the writers tend to be really responsive if you do have a question or a comment about their piece. Unlike reading some bullshit in Premiere, here you can actually have a discussion about it with the author. However, usually it's done via e-mail so I guess the columns portion of the board does get a little slow.
I find I don't need to go to other sites anymore to get updates on a lot of the things I am interested in, and that is awesome. Even my rather obsure tastes find homes in places like Squib Central and The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly where the rest of the world ignores those fringes.
