...would be the title of this thread had Foo Fighters not totally dominated them. Holy shit!
We missed the opening band (Who starts a show at 7:00?), not even sure who it was. Got to our section just in time to hear the roar for Weezer coming onstage. They were quite stellar. Opened with My Name is Jonas. Played all the ones you would expect - In the Garage, Buddy Holly, Beverly Hills, We are All on Drugs, Say it Ain't So. Covered Foo Fighter's Big Me. Had a guy come up from the crowd to play Undone. They left after the first part of the show, only the lit up =W= remained. Then a single light came on about 25 feet in front of us - just Rivers and a guitar to play Island in the Sun. At one point, Pat came out from behind the drums to sing and play guitar on Photograph while Rivers played the drums. Finished the show with Hash Pipe. Good stuff. The best part was the fact that there were four nerds (Weezer) on stage doing their best imitation of rock stars. Pete Townsend style arm swingin' guitar playing, guitar necks up in the air to prolong a note, back-to-back guitarists. After they were done I told one of my friends that I was satisfied...that I could go home happy...
Then Foo Fighters took the stage. I've never seen a band come out so aggressive. Not Metallica, not Pantera, not White Zombie, not Corrosion of Conformity...maybe Deftones. And they kept the intensity up all night. The only break was for a Dave Grohl acoustic version of Everlong. Most of the songs were expected - All My Life, Hero, Best of You,This is a Call. I don't know how Dave was able to keep up...especially at our high altitude. But, he did. He was screaming like this was the only show on the tour, like he didn't need to save his voice for anybody else. Because Pat and Rivers switched places during Weezer's set, I expected the same out of Foo Fighters, but it didn't come...until the encore. All of a sudden, there was Dave behind the drums, and Taylor looking eerily similar to Kurt Cobain - stringy blond hair, even a blue and green striped shirt. It seemed like a golden opportunity to play a Nirvana song, but they went with Cold Day in the Sun. After that, the predictable song was Monkeywrench, and it sure didn't disappoint. Highlight of the show was Breakout. Dave's screaming was awesome.
After the show, the night kind of devolved. A lesbian (one whose gender I couldn't quite discern) freestyle rapping to some girls who may or may not have been gay. Said girls singing (I've Had) The Time of My Life as loud as the could on the light rail, followed by them punching and kicking each other. One of their friends being an asshole...nearly leading to a fight between us. Another fight nearly breaking out between the girls and a 40-year-old lady across the aisle. Followed up by missing our stop - on the last train of the night - and having to walk an hour and fifteen minutes instead of just fifteen minutes. Quite a night.
