Dammit! I missed it. I meant to Tivo it, but I got behind and had to go to work.
But I did catch Battlestar Glattica for the first time...it was SO good. not Firefly good, but getting there. I am going to pick up the Dvd when it comes out

Must remember to watch Earl.

What was the ep. about?

It wasn't all I hoped for I didn't laugh out loud, but was amused. Perhaps the trouble was I'd seen all the best bits in the advertisements. I think they're laying the groundwork for something better. Hopefully next week...

I wasn't too hyped up for it so I ended up loving it. First episodes are rarely great but this one was pretty damn good.

Hell, after five episodes of Seinfeld the NBC execs were ready to throw them overboard. So, give it time... but why does it have to go up against some highly rated shows on the other networks? That is just silly.

I thought that it was pretty damn funny. But, I'm afraid that the masses won't watch it similar to Arrested Development (non-traditional sitcoms seem to do better on cable for some reason).

However, my TiVo sez that Bravo (http://www.bravotv.com/Schedule/search.bravo?month=2006-12&keyword=Earl&start=today) will repeat the show. Episode 1 looks like it'll be on this Sunday @12 AM.

I'm worried it's a little to Non-traditional to get big ratings too, but I really liked it. I think pairing it with "the Office" gives it a better chance, since the two are both sort of similar in that they aren't your regular sitcoms.

Now if NBC would get rid of the Apprentice and move these shows to the Sinefeld block on Thursdays, i think they would have a better shot.

How much weight did Supes loose? He looked a lot better than in Remember the Titans after which I actually feared for his life.

Loved the show. Set up the series perfectly: thoroughly explained his motivations, developed the characters and their relationships to each other, and left me wanting more in a very good way.

If NBC spent as much time developing good shows like this instead of trying to revamp Joey I could see a bright future for the show. However, NBC must have Matt Leblanc in the longest, and highest paid contract ever, because the network is doing everything in it's power to make sure people watch a show that should have gone the way of After MASH by now.

I agree, but as I stated, NBC is (and I don't know why) banking the network on Joey. I don't think that they'd surround it with shows that would either: A. make the public realize that Joey is stupid, or B. that would possibly alienate the people that actually like Joey.

Ratings from last night (estimated):

NBC/Tuesday
9:00 p.m. My Name is Earl
Overnights: 8.7/12 (#2), Viewers: 12.43 million (#2), A18-49: 5.4/13 (#1)

The 18-49 age group is of course the most important. Taking #1 in that every week means that Earl will most likely get moved to an earlier time slot and possibly Thursday, so that the network can benefit from more advertising cash. :)

Another great show. It was nice to meet Crabmans Moms and Sister, and the dancing hotness of the maid, who's name i can't remember for some reason. Loved the trashy center pieces, it looked like something some of my relatives would have made.

I think i have figured out why Earl has found viewers and Arrested Development hasn't. They are both smart shows, but Earl is basically a fresh story every week and you don't need to know more about the past ep's than what you are told in the open, where as AD has a lot of subtle jokes from earlier episodes. So while it rewards those who have seen the past episodes, new views are probably a little lost.

The office was good too. You feel a little bad for Carrell and his problems with the boss lady.

Another great show. It was nice to meet Crabmans Moms and Sister, and the dancing hotness of the maid, who's name i can't remember for some reason. Loved the trashy center pieces, it looked like something some of my relatives would have made.
Nothing to be ashamed of. A family with no Auburn fans would be kind of boring. ;)

Agreed. I never got into Arrested Development because when I did start watching, I was lost.

The office was good too. You feel a little bad for Carrell and his problems with the boss lady.
As my friend Susie used to say (in as Southern a drawl as you can imagine) "I feel so embarrassed for him."

Earl and The Office constitute the funniest hour on television. I did not realize Tuesday nights could be so enjoyable.

I'm afraid I have to disagree with you. I really don't think it has any of the quality of the original, and I fail to see the point of remaking a show that was perfect already.
The reverse happened a few years back on ITV (a british TV station). They remade That 70's Show for a british audience and called it "Days Like These". Needless to say it was terrible.

Well, the point was, that most people in the U.S. had never seen the original Office, so they figured that a large part of the audience would have no way of comparing the two shows. It's certianly not the first time that a U.S. company has remade a British show, most times they fall flat (see Ab-fab, which never got off the ground, or some other show about guys that i'm currently racking my brain for the title, but it is eluding me, so i can't name it) but sometimes they hit a homerun and are as good if not better, which is where i place The Office (as good) and Sanford and Son (Better). The point is bring a good show to an audience that hasn't seen it, in a new way. The U.S. Office, took the characters from the original, Americanized them, and went in it's own direction, instead of just copying the British version, and that my friend makes all the difference.

Omaru
12-08-2005, 02:26 PM
or some other show about guys that i'm currently racking my brain for the title

Men Behaving Badly, Holding the baby, Red Dwarf, Coupling to name but a few ;)

And what you said pretty much nailed it, I havent seen any of the second season yet to know if it's still loosely based (plotwise, like the first was) on the UK office but the characters aren't complete clones.

its no different from comics and movies, you get all these different people playing the same character, and comic movies in particular borrow elements from what fans remember and add some new ingrediants and you get a nice little something new that you appreciate on a whole new level while retaining your love for the original material.

Dear John aswell. ITV had another one, The Upper Hand, which was a remake of Who's The Boss? A rare occurance where BOTH shows sucked.

I also thought of how many stupid corporate retreats I have been on that ended up just the same. Everybody is smashed and the whole point of going is completely lost.

Well, i saw the new "4 Kings" show that came on before Earl and The Office, and let me tell you people to not waste you time with this. If NBC is seriously thinking that this show is good, they have been smoking some kind of fancy crack, because it was awful. Not a single laugh in the whole show, i've spent a funner 30 minutes in the dentist office (of course taht could have been the gas). I don't know what the plans are for 8:30 in 3 weeks when they have to cancel the show, but i hope that NBC has a backup plan.

4-Kings is so bad that it makes The Office seem like Seinfeld.I'm not really sure what that means. You might as well have said it was so bad it makes Fiddle Faddle look like Cracker Jacks or that it was so bad it made my pee turn green.

Anyway, 4 Kings seemed like they tried to make an edgier "Friends" or a "Friends meets American Pie" or something equally lame and played out. I know people who liked it though.

Will and Grace was pretty funny for a change and The Office made me cringe more than it ever has before. I almost never laugh out loud at The Office but it remains one of my favorite shows.

Ditto. It is truely a great show. The episode where Earl let Randy off the hook for starting the fire is another great one.

Randy-isms are the best thing to be added to any sitcom in recent years, too bad only Randy can deliver them.

I also liked the episodes with Juliette lewis, David from Rosaenne and Adam Goldberg as the suicidal guy. I remember one had Neale from Freaks and Geeks in it too.

I have yet tp see the season finale though it aired here a few weeks ago. I need to get it on my DL queue

The show is starting "soon" here - they've been advertising it for the past few weeks. I stopped downloading eps after about 13 or 14 and haven't watched any for about six months so I'm really looking forward to it.

I really enjoyed the first few eppisodes but then just found it really boring, it just seemed to be the same thing every week.
JOY: buy me a hot tub earl
EARL: no joy im not buying you a hot tub.

I watch My Name Is Earl every week. I think it is the funniest show i've seen in a while and Jason Lee is the greatest but the whole cast are really good.

I stopped watching Earl about halfway through its first season. I don't know why, I really liked the show. I have a tendency to do that. You'd think I had ADHD.

I liked the new episode though randy seemed a bit too intelligent. Also is you know who going to be written out of the show temporarily given what happened.

Aside from the anime pictures on someone's signature that are a little NSFW, I would have to say that this week's episode was fantastico! As much as I hate Marlee Matlin, I was glad her bit with Joy was funny. Hopefully the show will be back on track in the weeks to come.

This may be old news to most of you, but from imdb;

In a never aired episode from the first season, Kevin Smith and Jason Mewes reprised their drug dealer Jay and Silent Bob roles. The episode dealt with Earl having to cross Jay and Bob off his list because they kept a marijuana tab for him years ago and he never paid it off. This was never aired due to the drug themes.

Does this episode appear in the box set?? Anyone seen it? (the episode that is, not the box set!)

Dave

I don't know if that's real. i seem to recall a recent interview with Kevin about Earl where he has been offered a chance to guest direct, but what he really wanted was to act in the show....

I like it very much! I have seen the 1. season three times! It's not hilarious, but still very good!!! I recommend it to everyone. At least the pilot episode. Watch it! :o And I have also seen a few episodes from the 2. season... I think that the episodes are getting... weaker... :(

A fresh comedy. It's about time. A lot of the comedy out there was getting a little stale but this show is hilarious. I'd like to watch that episode where he owes Jay and Bob money for bud. Do tell if it appears somewhere. Brody man!!

I really don't dig it. The premise is lame, Lee just gurns his way through each episode and the "hot" latino chick looks like a post-op.

It does have one silver lining though:

Actually been cancelled then?
