egarly waiting for Tools new album....
Here is the latest....
Launch Radio Networks reports: Tool’s webmaster posted a message at the band’s official site last Friday (July 8), stating that "for various reasons, the (new Tool) album is being recorded in relative secrecy...even more so than past recording sessions and related Tool projects." The webmaster added, "When (the band decides) to release certain details pertaining to the recording process, as well as any projected timetables, etc., it will most certainly be posted on the band’s official website...this could be tomorrow, or two days from now, or in a couple of weeks or even a month from now."
While no other details were divulged, the posting did hint that "the members of the band are working hard and, as the saying goes, there is light at the end of the tunnel."
It’s been four years since Tool released its last album, 2001’s "Lateralus", and drummer Danny Carey told Launch that the band prefers to take its time. "We’re not pressured, I think, and we don’t have a record company hanging over us, saying, ’You have to do an album every year,’ or something," he said. "It’s a lot more important to take our time and have something to say, and if you’re putting out a record every year, how much can you really learn in one year? You know, you’ve got to develop as a person and develop as a player."
Meanwhile, ToolShed.down.net has reported that an August 23 release date had been set for a double-vinyl version of "Lateralus", featuring picture discs and a special holographic gatefold jacket. However, a representative for the band’s label told Launch that while plans exist for a vinyl edition of the album, no arrival date has been determined.
YEAH!!!! I am so amped.... Just as long as its better than Emotive!!

Everything should be released on vinyl.(well, not the next Simpson recording, Jessica or that lame-ass sis of hers) What happened to choice? And by the way I'd prefer most of my music in analog while we're at it.

egarly waiting for Tools new album....
Definitely not. BMB mentioned on the toolband site that there is a 15 minute song they are working on that shows a big change in the band, in a good way. I'm amped. Danny mentioned in an interview with MTV last year that the new jams they were working out (they don't really structure the songs too much without Maynard there, and he was touring with APC) were much heavier than the music of their recent past. He said they were influenced a lot by Fantomas and Meshuggah. I can't imagine what a Meshuggah influence in Tool is going to sound like. Plus, I was thinking: Tool's albums are progressively more and more introspective and less combatitively aggressive, which has been a cool part of the journey as an original fan. I was beginning to think that was something they intended. I can't imagine how it's going to work that they've gotten heavier, but are going to get more introspective and "enlightened" than Lateralus.
But I can't stand reading little blurbs like this because of how carrot-and-donkey they are with their fans, and I'm not about to join ToolArmy.

This is true...
Digital sound does not pick up a lot of the harmonics in both instruments and voice, leaving a somewhat 'empty' sound.

And most listeners can't tell the difference anyway. Record companies and producers just "dumbing down" John Q. Public in the music department. And the beat goes on....

Well, several pros about digital:
If you make a mistake, just cut and past with the computer.
If you are off pitch a little, just open up a wav editor and move it up a notch.
Easily readable by any computer, and the medium lasts a lot longer.
CONS:
You can get away with being a sub-par musician and/or singer, and the quality of sound is not good.
Unfortunately, until (if??) we get a better medium for analog sound, digital is here to stay. Tapes wore out too fast, records scratched.

Tool are set to release the long-awaited follow up to 2001's "Lateralus" in April or May 2006, it has been revealed.
The band have been working on the as-yet-untitled set for much of 2005 and are currently in the mixing stage of the sessions, reports Launch Radio Network.
In their typical style, the Cali. based four-piece have been tight-lipped, although in an interview, drummer Danny Carey told Yahoo Launch! the set was a natural progression in their progressive, forward-looking hard rock sound.
"All I can say is you should probably just look at the past Tool records," he said. "It's just kind of the next stage of development. Some of the tunes are pretty heavy on this one. It's still gonna be weird time signatures and all that stuff. It's just what comes out of us, you know. We just try to be true to our chemistry when we're in the little room in here together jamming, and what comes out comes out."
The band are currently focusing on the release of two mini-DVDs this Christmas, both featuring tracks from their most recent album. On one disc comes "Schism", the other, "Parabola" - with both releases featuring the music video in longform and previously unreleased remixes.
Other, very important news, finds Tool and A Perfect Circle singer Maynard James Keenan preparing to release the first of his own label red wines in spring 2006. The blend is from his own vineyard, and is a 2004 grape.

Here is the anouncment for Tool's promo tour.
TOOL PROMO TOUR
As it now stands, in a few weeks (mid-February) the members of the band (except for Adam) and their manager will be traveling to parts of Europe, England, Japan and Australia on a bit of a promo tour, meaning that they will be meeting with record company people and doing various interviews with the press in order to promote their new record and upcoming tours. Although any press releases are usually timed to coincide with the release of the record, there will undoubtedly be leaks, so those of you who scour the internet should be on the lookout around this time. As the others field questions and deal with promo issues abroad, Adam will remain in Los Angeles to direct the new Tool video.

Since this does not deserve its own thread. I thought I would put it in here.
My first assignment of my English 2 class is to write a descriptive paragraph about something. As a joke, I brought up listening to Tool to my professor, and she was intrigued by the idea. I was instructed to write it.
This is for my first graded assignment in class so I thought I would get the thoughts of you guys on it.
Honestly, what do you think? My fear is that it is a little to narrative less descriptive.
Here it is.
Escape into Tool
A groan of banality escapes me before I open my eyes. I feel the strain of another long day release its' grasp on my mind as the sound of disc loading is broken. My lungs fill with cool, shallow breaths of air as the majestic rhythm departs the grey and black stereo speaker that sets before me. All at once my mind begins to unfold the structure and feel of the music that flows so sympathetically through my ears. My thoughts never drift, sway, or vary negativly with Maynard's voice at the helm. Likewise, the melodic complexity stays my mind from wandering back towards the various problems that it had previously incurred. My eyes shift to approach the blue glow from the stereo face. I watch intently as the seconds fall away, slowly pulling me back from my escape, and as the music fades away my mind reaches out to embrace whatever is to invade it next.
Also, for those tool fans, did you enjoy the little hints of what exact songs I was listening to?
OK Poopers, be gentle it is my first time really writing in five years.

In the immortal words of Adam Sandler, "not too shabby". I like the "melodic complexity" keeping the mind from straying. If she's got any feeling for music in her, she will get that. I think it's plenty descriptive, though. But hell, man, I ain't no Leon Toadstool. What do I know.

TOOL RECORD MASTERED
Salma stopped dancing on January 29th. The next morning the members of the band flew to Portland, Maine to have the record mastered by Bob Ludwig. This was done on January 31, no doubt followed by a lobster dinner.

I wanted to say a few things about the release of this album and Tool. I understand that a lot of you are like, "Why in the hell is everyone(me mainly :) ) going crazy about Tool?"
Well, there are a lot of reasons behind that. Tool is a band like no other of its kind. Unique to its very core. Trying to explain my obsession with this band to anyone who knows nothing about the fundamentals of music is , well, impossible. If you do have a basic fundamental background in music, all you need do is listen to "Lateralus", "Anemia", or "Undertow" and see for yourself( you don't have to like them to see why they are so great). What Tool has done to rock music is to raise the bar of possibilities. Thus, I am waiting for the next great masterpiece from them eagerly. IF Tool continues to put out music like their previous albums, then this next album will be another huge step for music. I have no problem making this statement ( because in my opinion it's true), Tool is the best performing group to come out of the 90's. ( Oh how I hear the mob footsteps of Robbo, JJ, and company coming for me :) )
For me there is no doubt about that statement. What they can do in just 1 song, most bands couldn't pull of in a whole album. Again, this is all my opinion, only not really. I mean if you know what a instrument is capable of and listen to any of those albums my opinion is so easily backed up.
Now, the future. Well, we shall soon see. Unfortunately, a band can only do so much before it implodes and starts to suck. This next album has the potential to be a stinker. I think it is more likely than not that this will be their last album, so I hope they go out having pushed the bar up just one more notch.
Anyway, the point of all that. If you are one of the people who have no earthly idea who Tool is, and you like rock music then go buy Undertow and see how you like it. Then go buy Anemia and see how you like it. Then go buy Lateralus and see how you like it. All three completely different from one another, and all three masterpieces in their own way.
Two of the three have gone down to like $9.99 anyway, what a steal.I think Lateralus is like $15.
I will now defend my statements to the gathering mob.
* Bam gets pelted with rocks*
*Edit*
Whether you like them or not I will be keeping all updated on the situation, and I will do my best to make as may TOOL songs "Songs of ths Day" as I can up until, and a little after, the new album is out.
So, grab your ears folks Tool is hear for a little bit.

I think you feel about them, how I felt about Rush back in the Mezozoic. When you're a musician, your feelings about music, and what you really like, are intense. Kinda why I have a hard time listening to critics shit on something they only know from their ears. Sorry if I offend anyone. Music has played a very large part of my life. It's molded me as a person in countless ways. My son started drumming at 2. I'm playing in my daughter's boyfriend's band(still freaks me out). My wife was an all-state clarinet as a freshman. Her dad was the band director at a major university, and now holds one of the highest jobs in Texas music education. My grandfather played guitar in local country and western bands. So people that are passionate about their music get instant respect from me.

it takes that kind of a band to make it on my list of "greatness."
My list of band greatness is quite small, it consists of Radiohead(they were my favourite band in school, and they have consistently blown me away with every new album), Tool (I have a list of guys I'd "go gay" for:eek:: George Lucas, Trey Parker & Matt Stone, Morrissey, and most relevantly, Danny Carey...his drumming has been known to give me a chubby;)), and my ALL-TIME favourite band ever, The Smiths (Johnny Marr has created some of the most amazingly beautiful, delicate melodies with his axe, sometimes I find it too much to bear)
My solo artist list is even shorter, Miles Davis and Jeff Buckley.
btw, BAMSS, I don't know how I missed your "paragraph" post the first time around. I just read it and it's damned impressive, but I'm embarressed to say I don't get the song references you speak of? What parts are they?

Great comparison!I first saw Rush during the Hemispheres tour in '79. Same year I got my first Rickenbacker 4001(still play it, the white one in the "Pics" thread I got later). The guys were hitting on all cylinders back then. Geddy's vocals were as strong as ever. One of the most awesome stage and light shows of the time. And of course, Mr. Peart. The guy is just freakin' amazing. And a poet, too.
Here's something that surprised me, though. I've seen countless live shows since my first in '77, but I saw Blink 182 last year, and Travis is the closest thing to Peart that I've seen  (he was even playing with a broken foot). He adds so much more live, than the studio work shows. Blink is supposed to be a "punk-pop" band, but what I saw was a "hard rock" band. I'm sure I'll get lambasted for that:rolleyes: .

"Reaching out to embrace the random , reaching out to embrace whatever may come......"- "Lateralis" from Lateralus

Just nabbed this:
The TOOL Story Marches On
From Andy King, TotalRock… New Album playback at 10, Golborne Road, London W10 -
February 20th 2006... 4pm and 7.30pm
There is something delightfully Toolian about staging a series of European album
press/radio playback and ‘meet-the-new-Record-Company’ dates whilst not only not
revealing the name of said new album but also keeping all the track titles
themselves firmly under wraps.
For your roving Tool reporter, this presents two particular difficulties –
firstly it makes accurate reviewing a task almost as hazardous as Quail shooting
whilst under the influence (perish the thought that anyone could even
contemplate such foolishness) and secondly it prompts momentary, and forgivable,
cynicism along the lines of ‘They’re ‘avin’ a larff! This is just an elaborate,
fake decoy album!’. Oh shit, there I go with those hunting expressions again.
Today (and I use the word entirely accurately - as my Tool obsession squirts
into me such blind courage as to prompt me to lurk, contrary to Record Company
wishes, in the shadows for 90 minutes - so as to catch both the 4pm and 7.30pm
playbacks) - today, the Record Company has displayed a remarkable degree of
Tool-savvy by booking an unheard of pub-for-bohemians in West London’s debatably
fashionable and trendy (or downright dangerous – unless, like me, you have at
least two layers of hoodies on top of your baseball hat) W10 area. 10, Golbourne
Road is at the foot of one of London’s once most notorious and scary tower
blocks – Erno Goldfinger’s (not to mention The Clash’s) Trellick Tower – now
perversely, and miraculously, transmogrified into one of the City’s most
desirable residences. It sez ‘ere.
It’s a joy – in this day and age and with such a multi-million selling global
mega-band (yes, it really is true, fans!) – to immediately bump into ¾ of the
band casually swigging beer from bottles (or, somewhat surprisingly, Starbucks
from a paper cup in Maynard’s case) and chatting amiably with the assembled
mid-afternoon gathering of hacks. It’s always a joy to meet a man so much ‘his
own man’ and Maynard, as usual, manages to take such an expression to dizzy new
heights. As inscrutable as the bastard offspring of Chairman Mao and Wallace &
Gromit’s Were Rabbit (slightly caught in the headlights of my immediate and
presumptuous ‘hail fellow well met’ self-introduction) Maynard professes to
‘feeling a little jet-lagged’ and at once hops off to safer environs. Meanwhile
big haired Danny and Justin look, for all the world, like a brace of goddamn
hippies from the Bong Shop down the road. As has been revealed – Adam has
remained in LA ‘directing the video’.
After a 30 minute delay in proceedings – caused by a tardy and self-important
bunch of hacks creeping out of some rank corner of the evil EMAP Empire (they’re
all Borgs, we suspect) the Anonymous Playback of The Nameless Songs commences…
‘probably nearly in their Final Running Order’, we are told. Readers will,
hopefully, forgive any inaccuracies in reportage. On first listen I surmised
this was an 9 track album, managing to squeeze this figure up to 10 on second
hearing, whilst having confirmation from the band that it was, in fact an 11
track album. (They thought).
Queens Of The Stone Age, The Melvins, Turbonegro, Satyricon, Weezer and Hole.
Hmmm... Joe Baresi’s CV might not be an immediate one to catch the attention
whilst puzzling over a new Producer for a band such as our heroes. But then,
Tool never have been noted for the obvious, the easier, softer way. The band
dynamic IS different on this work. But it’s a challenging difference – perhaps
no great surprise for a band which often borders on the recalcitrant. As might
have been expected from a ‘guitar-oriented’ knob twiddler– the guitars are very
much to the fore. Perhaps more so than on any work since Opiate. And there are
other notables – but more of those later. What we have here with The Album With
No Name (rather a good title, boys… why not go for it? Surely it’s not too
late?) is yet another milestone in the journey of one of the most innovative of
rock bands of the last 30 years. It’s a Rollercoaster. It’s difficult (‘Hurrah!’
I hear you yell!). It’s at points dense, frustrating and impenetrable
(‘Wahaay!’). On occasion it provides the band’s most commercial work to date. At
worst, it heavily borrows hooks and snippets from, mainly, the Lateralus album.
At best, it’s soaring and stunning and staggering – an exercise in aural, no
sensory, exploration. In short, it’s the new Tool album and it’s f@!# great…
Track 1 (7min 3sec). Mesmeric start. Hypnotic beat. Jagged, angular off beats.
Familiar trancey passages punctuated by a guitar part reminiscent of an older
Tool track. Tribal drum beats f@!# with a lovely melody and climax with
Maynard’s vocals. I am going to cry.
Track 2 (7min 12sec) Melodic intro with almost balladic vocals from Maynard.
Lighter feel (almost, dare I say it, APC-tinged) but not for long. Danny gets
stronger – Baresi releases our tubthumper and the feel gets much heavier into
‘chugga chugga’ off beats. Then – here’s some unusual guitar work. Man, it’s
almost Hendix-like! Then back into a heavy tribal groove. I fight off the urge
to masturbate furiously.
Track 3/4 (This is either one 17 minute monster or two tracks – of 6min 20sec
and 10min 26sec – only the Gods Of The Stinfist know the answer). Whichever it
is – DO NOT SMOKE THE WEED WHILST LISTENING TO IT! Starting with Buddhist
temple-flavoured gong tweaking the collective nipples of Kraftwerk, a deep
sphincter-rumbling bass and om chanting might recall ‘Parabol’. After 3 minutes
of this nerve-wracking niceness, all Hell breaks loose with mega-heavy riffdom
before slipping back into spaciness after 30 seconds. Like an epileptic
convulsion in a night of deep sleep. Hawkwind does Greensleeves whilst Pink
Floys look on. The Record Company people are starting to look nervous and
uncomfortable as if they have seldom HEARD anything so strange and worrying.
What the f@!# is this? Let me outta here! I need to go snuggle the Radio One
Playlist! Suddenly it’s a crazed sea shanty for whacked-out space travelers.
‘You’re the only one who can hold your head up high. It’s my time now… my time
now… give me my… give me my…’ duets Maynard with himself. Danny fights free of
the evil clutches of Dr Baresi and goes off on one. Adam’s guitar recalls
something off Lateralus again. It’s Triad, I think, but it’s almost impossible
to identify one riff whilst another song goes on. The musical equivalent of
rubbing one’s head and tummy simultaneously in different directions. They’re
doing this on purpose to f@!# with our heads. Bastards! Returns to full-on
rhythmic Toolishness to end. No it isn’t the end. It doesn’t end like any other
song ends. Tool never ends. I’m losing it. Therap me now, please.
Track 5 (Probably. 6min 11 sec definitely). Oooooooh. This is THE one. Ya know
what, pluggers? Radio might even go for this! Maynard’s vocals at the start are
quite extraordinary. Place equal parts of Chris De Burgh, Tiny Tim and Bilal The
Muezzin in a blender and run for your life. Easily the most commercial track to
date. In fact, easily the most commercial track Tool have EVER done. That guitar
is waaay strong again. Did Adam bribe Baresi? This is still twisted. It’s hard
but commercial. The end spells a relief as climactic as a boil bursting. I go
‘Yessssss’ and the whole room of cool jouros looks round at me as if I’m a
Bateman cartoon ‘The Man Who Ordered A Pork Sandwich In Blooms’. This is a
SERIOUSLY awesome track. Just you mark my words.
Track 6 (1min). In which Maynard becomes a Native American for no good reason.
Strange, but we like a bit of strangeness.
Track 7 (Maybe. Could be two medium length tracks and a terribly short one, too.
I’m now losing the will to live with the stopwatch. It’s 14min 45sec of music,
whatever). Guitars to the fore again. One long note with almost blues-like,
overlaid note progressions. f@!# me, it’s House Of The Rising Sun cut with
Ketamine. There are unsettling whispers and talking. Is this a bad trip or a
psychiatry session? Come to think of it, is there a difference? ‘How Are You
Today?’… ‘Tell Me Everything’ then THWACK! Into such a breathtakingly slappy,
powerful riff kick that I’m actually physically winded for a nanosecond.
Demonic, growling, rap noise over rhythmic heavy heavy groove. Forget the Were
Rabbit jibe. This is a f@!# full-on, nasty, shaven headed WEREWOLF. A lightbulb
goes mental in the room. The Record Company almost lose all cool and run for it.
I damn nearly join them but now I AM crying. I am gulping back wracking sobs at
the sheer Toolishness of this monstrous, magnificent track. This is the real
deal. Again snippets from Lateralus. You ARE playing with us. You ARE! This is
Tool’s equivalent of ‘spot the Hitchcock in the Hitchcock film’! But I don’t
care. It’s like The Best Of Tool in one song. The Bomb. It ends like the violent
end of a violent life. And then it ends again. Unless that’s another track, of
course….
Track 8 (6min 44sec). Odd noises. Sea shore meets ironworks. Ever see the
cartoon meisterwerk ‘Spirited Away’? You MUST! In it there is a character called
Kamajii The Boiler Keeper who has 6 arms and an army of small black coals. This
sound is similar. Soon joined by elastic bass and drum twangling over
multi-layered Maynard whisperings and chanted vox. Shades of Pink Floyd again.
Shades of the more ‘moody’ Lateralus tracks again. Reflection. Disposition.
Tribal and hypnotic.
Track 9 (9min 04sec. I think). Melodic, slow, hypnotic. Almost balladic. Wall of
Sound build-up. Danny does some Bamboo pole-type drumming into big rif***e. Big,
big sound. Tool at their weightiest. It’s almost Chinese at the end. I can think
of worse things to be like. Perhaps the boys have their eyes on the World’s
fastest developing market?
Track 10 (OK it’s 11 but I’m f@!# if I can work out how we got here). The walk
out track (their description not mine). Oddness. The Noodles of Satan.
And that’s it. First playback and Maynard bids us farewell. ‘Hope you enjoyed
it. If you didn’t we could put on a little Green Day for you?’. Second playback
and Justin apologises for not being The Arctic Monkeys. We smoodge and chatter.
We remember that Danny is actually the World’s nicest (and tallest) man. If only
I could feel as comfy in my skin as he does. That’s it – go on, compare my
insides with his outsides. We rejoice in the fact that ¼ of Tool is, in fact,
English. We clamber onto our pushbike past legions of hoodies whilst the Tool
Carnival ups and offs to Amsterdam. f@!# knows where THAT playback will take
place but I have a shrewd idea or two…

March 1st Kerrang! article.
Tool are the final headline act to be announced for this year's Download festival. The three-day event, which takes place at Donington Park on June 9, 10, and 11 will see the enigmatic LA art-metallers closing the proceedings on the Friday evening on the Main stage. It will be the band's first UK appearance since 2002.
"We're really excited," says bassist Justin Chancellor. "It's a huge honour for us to be asked to close Friday night at the horny mother of English rock festivals. I always imagined playing Donington as a kid, so I won't be taking this opportunity lightly. This is the kind of experience we've been patiently working towards - can't wait, see all you bastards there!"
Tool are gearing up to return with their first new collection of material since 2001's gargantuan 'Lateralus'. Kerrang! was granted an exclusive listening session to the just-completed, as yet-untitled fourth album, which is due out May, and can reveal that anyone expecting the shadowy Californian quartet to have gone soft with age willl be sorely disappointed. True to form, Tool's upcoming opus is a 77-minute prog-metal odyssey, packed with plenty of eight minute-plus twisted riff-a-thons, odd-tempo polyrhythms and the band's trademark, eerie interludes. It's also arguably their heaviest, most punishing material since their 1993 breakthrough album 'undertow'.
The upcoming 11-track album has certainly been the band's most laborious and challenging record to complete, taking a mammoth five years to write (some of the material stems from pre-lateralus sessions), during which keenan recorded and toured with his other band A Perfect Circle.
Tool also spent five months, in the company of QOTSA/Melvins engineer Joe Barresi, in three different LA studios over autumn 2005 recording it.
"We've all been listening to a lot of Meshuggah" admits guitrist Adam Jones. "I see a lot of them in us and us in them, and they really have a very experimental prog side to them. I don't think it was like, 'Okay right here were going to play like Meshuggah', but more, 'Oh my god that's come out a Meshuggah moment'."
"We have the most retarted president we've ever had, and we're frustrated and that's the reason it's a little heavier this time" reveals drummer Danny Carey. "That level of frustration back like when we first got the band together: we were products of that fucking Reagan thing, we were pissed off and bummed-out, we had that angst, and now it's coming forth again: like it or not we're products of our environment. We're pissed off again"
No stranger to weaving social and political frustrations into his tortuously articulate lyrics, singer MJK who released the politically-motivated covers album, 'eMOTIVEe' with APC in 2004, has chosen another approach this time around.
"I think for me, and this is just personally, the last few years have really been crushing," Keenan confesses. "For me, as an artist, I needed to see on some level if speaking my mind would actually inspire people - you see the sky falling and you feel like youve got to say something. I think of prior Tool albums 'AEnema' and 'Lateralus', lyrically, I had this idea of trying to share things and push some kind of higher purpose - enlightenment, this global consciousness thing - and everything that's going on nowadays has kind of left me a little disappointed, a little bummed.
"So I think on this album I've talked more about my personal stuff, things that I needed to get off my chest," he adds. "It's a little cynical and it's almost like coming from a sad place. There's some hope in it, but it's more back to rock and roll basics, just experessing some very big sadness that's from the gut."
"This is our blues record, we're singing the blues!" Jokes Carey.
"The difference is before, we had that young spunk and we thought we could actually say something and help people realise these things," continues Keenan. "But now, the anger is more of a frustrated anger, and me sitting back and going, 'Okay, I'm going to shut up now, I'm going to stop ranting and trying to be Chicken Little telling you that the sky is falling, I'm going to just let you guys get hit in the head'."
Tool's as-yet-untitled album is due to hit shelves in May.
--------------
Personally, the change in focus for the lyrics and content has me a little worried. Not that Tool owes it to me to keep this progression of transcendentalism, but that's something that's been important to me from them. The idea that they've all been inspired by Meshuggah (like has been mentioned before) just makes me giddy. Meshuggah are heavy as sludge, and prog-metal wizards. I know I'm going to love this album.

Musically, it sounds like a wet dream. I am excited about that.
Looks like yet again, I am going to have to listen to musicians bitch about politics. I'm sorry but it is getting old. APC, Disturbed, System of a Down, NIN, Incubus, Green Day, 311, and now Tool. I love good music, I like it when lyricist speak from the Heart, but when you have listened to 100 anti-bush albums, it just gets old. Hell, I know liberals who are sick of it. Well not really.;)
Ahh well, I can only hope that Maynard won't shove it down our throats. I am not judging yet. Just please don't turn into that band Tool, please don't. We have eight or more already.
Anyways, thank you for the info Karma.

Someone posted a Photoshopped version of the new logo on toolnavy:
http://img158.imageshack.us/img158/7438/version5zl.jpg
There is no doubt in my mind that these official images are tricks. That Alex Grey album art is straight from that photo I posted....not even a high-rez scan of the original art -- it's from the same exact angle as the photo. And I have a hard time believing Tool would give the go-ahead on a logo that could be misconstrued with "fool" upon first seeing it. If I know anything about the band, it seems to me like they'd go with the more symmetrical design. It's a much more creative connection with the beginning and ending letters anyway.
I still don't know what to think about the album name and track titles. All the information is either connected as one big April Fools joke, or these images were put out to make the doubters more doubtful. I'm not thinking too much about the name and titles because they're out of context without the music anyway, but in my mind these pictures are nothing but jokes.
BAMSS04
03-21-2006, 04:13 PM
If it is fake then Tool is going through a lot of trouble to make it appear so. I am just posting things straight off of www.toolband.com . If it is a joke, well then it is a joke. It does seem like an bad waste of time, though. They are about to leave on Tour for about two years. I would think they would want to be working on their show, or hanging out with their families and stuff. Take a vacation. Something.
I do understand that they did the same thing with lateralus, but this is taking it a step further isn't it? I mean it seems like over-kill at this point. I might but asking for it but I am gonna go with this as being real. I mean if they get me they get me.
karmattack
03-21-2006, 04:23 PM
Considering their connection with April 1st jokes, wanting their fans to think for themselves, and the amount of free publicity something like this would generate, I really don't think it's too much trouble.
As a graphic designer, I create at LEAST 10 ideas on any project for a client. It's not too much to have kept an idea that accidentally looked like "fool" and use it now, for this. An illustration I did of two teammates celebrating in silhouette comes to mind -- I had to modify my design because the client pointed out it looked like they were humping. And I can recreate that album art using the photo I posted in under 1 minute.

They have done two April fools Jokes and they do them on April 1st, not a month or two months ahead of time. It is usually silly stiff too. Like Maynard finding Jesus. Who believed that?
This has nothing to do with freethinking either, I mean it was released on the official web site. This stuff has been released on Tool Army as well. If they do it, it is not about free-thinking. It is just for a joke. A pretty good joke, but that it all. Again, I would think that this is a waste of time. No matter how easy it is, what's the point of lying about it?

No, there have been April Fools jokes every year since the Undertow days. They have been done through TDN. JJ can back me up here. I don't remember them all.
The first one was they all died in a bus crash. One time Danny quit the band. Once they were starting a reality TV show. Maynard found Jesus. Yadda yadda.

From the official FAQ:
B. A Note About Salt
It is worth mentioning that much of what Tool says, you need to take with a HUGE grain of salt. A lot of it is made up (an interview hinting at 24-minute songs, and an April Fools' prank about a highway accident come to mind), so be careful when you choose to believe something you are being told. If anything, it is probably a good reminder that we should exercise our best judgment and not be sheep in the herd. (One of Tool's main messages seems to be that people need to think for themselves more.) After all, the falsehoods are usually well told, but do tend to seem a bit peculiarly off-the-wall. Best of luck.
Plus Kabir's comment on the news page about getting out your salt shaker...
BAMSS04
03-21-2006, 05:00 PM
I'm not counting TDN, because they are not the official website. At the Toolband, Maynard has only done two April Fools jokes, and they were obvious jokes to anyone who knows about the band.( When I read that Maynard had found Jesus, I looked up at the date APR 1 05 and laughed)
Again, I am not saying it is not possible for this to all be a joke, but it seems to serve no purpose. I mean you can't say that the fans are easy, because they were the ones to release the information. They had to release a track listing, a album name, a release date, and the album art before most of us thought it was lagit. Again, it could be a joke, but it seems silly. By this time in 2001 everyone had the name Lateralus, the Track listing, the release date, and the album art. So, it would seem logical to assume that this is real, even if it turns out to be a joke.
I'm not saying you don't have a point, just that those of us who believe what they released arn't any less free thinkers than you or the people that think it is a joke. We have logical reasons to think it is lagit.
If it is a joke, they got me.
jjcourtright
03-21-2006, 05:04 PM
For some reason they don't seem to be neatly collected on TDN...
It looks like 97 was the bus crash, 98 was TDN crashing and losing 84% of their stuff, 99 was demos of two new songs - "Floorpail" and "Anagram" (Floorpail is an anagram of April Fool), 00 was a live show in LA, 01 was Danny leaving the band, 02 was the "Gammon" EP, 03 I can't find, 04 was Tool hosting a reality show, and 05 was Maynard finding the Jesus.
karmattack
03-21-2006, 05:06 PM
I'm not counting TDN, because they are not the official website. As a preface, I'm not trying to argue with you. I'm just trying to explain why I have serious doubts about this thing. What we seem to agree upon is that neither of us knows anything for sure. Concerning TDN, Maynard and Kabir communicate. Maynard and/or the band have Kabir post things on TDN on their behalf. It's a semi-official site.
BAMSS04
03-21-2006, 05:38 PM
JJ:
I know for a FACT the last two April fools jokes were done via ToolBand. You may find them at TDN, but I actually read them on April First two years ago, and last year on ToolBand. Before that, I don't know.
Karma:
As far as I can tell the band has one official website. Toolband. TDN is a great site, call it Semi-official if you will, but none the less not the official site.
Anyway, You guys have your opinions, I have mine. My only point was that it is not less logical to assume that they are actually being honest because, they did not release the info on April 1st, they had given us the same info this time in 01' and it was lagit, and the band has not allowed lies to filter from the official site for two months before without setting them straight.

Are you talking about the Triple-J review? I heard it a while back and I do remember him calling the album 10,000 Days. There's really no reason to doubt the name and track titles, I think. Like I said before, I personally don't even care what they are until I have the music and lyrics. Otherwise they are out of context. Like Naomi Shihab Nye wrote, "Is wind a noun or a verb?"
I really doubt these pictures, but that's just my opinion and instinct. You have just as much reason to believe them. I'm just trying to point out something interesting and/or strange about it.
BUT, about toolshed.down.net...it really is semi-official, or as its description says "Nearly official site includes news, concert reviews, articles, sound files, biographies, discography, images, and lyrics." I don't mean for it to be a matter of semantics, but haven't you noticed that TDN works pretty much in tandem with Toolband? They often release separate, but official, information. It seems like it's an argument of "You're not wrong. You're just not right."
But I am.
So there.

You know what Karma? I think once again all this is, is the two of us not undersyanding each other again. I thought you were saying that the album title, track list, release date, and album art were all fake. Not JUST the pictures, my bad.
Anyway back to the semantics,
Now, Everyband has an Offical site and several unofficial sites.
The difference between the official and unofficial sites is;
The official site is usually linked directly to the band. Meaning the band signs off on eveything posted.
Kabir may do this as well, but not all the time. He does not have to.
So,
My point in all this is that the band "officially" has been doing April Fools jokes for only two years. Yes, it is semantis, but its is all I got. :p
Truth be told I have been chcking the offical site for five years, and those were the only two April fools jokes I knew about. I have only been checking TDN for about 2 years, so I had no clue.
Anyway, this is a silly debate. We will know the truth in a few days. It makes no difference one way or another. The music is going to kick assss.

Also, so it doesn't look so much like an open-mouth-insert-foot moment later, I have to say that picture would/will work awesome as album art. I really like it, as I do with most of Alex Grey's work. Something about them using a piece of a painting that wasn't made specifically for them, and has already been publically shown, doesn't sit right with me. The logo....I don't like at all as they have it. If it's really what they go with, I think it's a failed design.
Just throwing that out there.

Do you think that Tool would lie to Amazon?

***Edit***
Off of www.Toolband.com
ALBUM MINI NOW ON AMAZON AND OTHERS
Some of you may have seen the album mini for Tool’s 10,000 Days on Amazon and on other sites that was posted ONE DAY after we showed it to you on this site (which is what we expected, and why we posted it when we did). Now that it’s out there for all to see, hopefully some of you who have been asking what exactly an album mini is might have a better idea. For those who still don’t know, it’s what a business (such as Amazon) uses to advertise a new product (such as the new Tool CD). Okay? Now, I can hear some of you saying to yourself: “But why does the image on Amazon and the other sites have the logo and album title superimposed over the artwork… when the image on the Tool websites doesn’t?” The answer is quite simple. Because Amazon and others need to include the band’s name and album title along with the artwork so that potential customers will know whose CD it is (don’t ask me why). With that said, the image that we posted on the Tool websites is how this piece of artwork will actually look with the packaging. However, we also wanted to give you a look at the new logo, so we placed it above the album mini. Okay? Just one last thing for now: I’ve been reading many of the comments on the TA message board (as well as those flooding my in-box) about this particular piece of cover art, and I just wanted to tell you how much I appreciate some of your personal thoughts and perceptive insight into the symbology and deeper levels of the striking imagery. It seems that a few of you (those who have commented on the artwork) are also anticipating ‘the bigger picture’ – that which you’ve become accustomed to over the years when it comes to Tool’s art direction. Well, to you, I will only say that you will not be disappointed… and that the key is right there before your very eyes.
BMB
I have no idea what to think anymore! It sound like he is telling us this is a joke, or he sould be saying that it is not a joke but there is more to the artwork than meets the eye.
Honestly, it is 2-1 and pick at the moment. They have done a great job fucking with our heads.

I honestly don't think it would be that big a deal to "lie" to amazon or any of the other places that are using the image. It's basically a placeholder for now anyway. The main thing is that Zoo/Volcano Records would have to be in on it too, and/or willing to take a little flack. I don't see why they would mind, for the following reasons:
1. This will be a large amount of free, new-style publicity.
2. Because they are keeping the album under such tight wraps (with Maynard keeping the 1 copy of the CD in his own pocket at listening parties), this could be a good way for them to find out where all the "holes in the dam" are, bootlegging-wise.
3. Tool is one of Zoo/Volcano's highest profile artists, unless you count 311 or Wierd Al.
But these are all reasons why I think it wouldn't be a big deal for them to pull this type of stunt. I don't think any of them proves it actually is one.

Just to fuel the hype, I'll mention that Alex Grey's website has the album art on it now too (in the News section):

Have to admit it looks cool, even if I don't like the logo. I wonder if there will be a new twist to the artwork like the animation in Aenima or the layering in Lateralus.

The joke is that there were 4 suprise listening parties today -- L.A., NYC, London, and Sydney:[03/31/06] - It's Four (4) Open & Loud Listening Parties!
Suddenly got a whole flurry of emails this morning, seems everyone got wind of this before we even woke up today; sorry we fell behind. Seems as part of Tool's global promotional tour for the upcoming record "10,000 Days", they are giving fans a one-time chance to hear the record exactly 31 days before its US release - which is tomorrow! A press release quotes the band as saying: Â
"With the four of us scattered across the world, this seemed a great opportunity to let our fans worldwide participate in something special. Tomorrow, in Sydney, London, New York, and Los Angeles, at 11 AM local time in each city, one of us will be on hand to play the album for the first 500 fans to arrive at the venue. No questions, no autographs, no cameras, no cellphones - just the music. We're sorry for the short notice, but we wanted to try to keep the media out and our diehard fans in."
The venues listed at the bottom of the press release are Space (Sydney), The Mean Fiddler (London), Irving Plaza (NY), The Avalon (LA). So it sounds like they're going to just show up, hit play, and sit quietly until it's over. No word yet on who will be at which session, but it seems likely that since Adam has been working on the music video, he will be running the LA session. Perhaps Justin will be in London? As more info comes in, we'll keep you posted. Meanwhile, this could be the lucky break you were waiting for - and maybe I'll see you at the LA venue! §
[Posted by Kabir]
and then...
[04/01/06] - Listening Party Reviews
Well, it's almost time for the LA listening party to start, and a lot of people have written in about the first three already. I'll get those emails up soon, but suffice it to say that everyone was pretty thrilled. Toolfan48 writes:
"Hey Kabir - i saw the post yesterday night and i thought ok obviously this is just this years April fools joke, especially when i called the venue and they said nothing was happening. so i cracked up thinking about all these kids lining up outside irving plaza on a saturday morning. but i live about three blocks from there, so i figured i'd roll by to maybe take some pics for tdn of the people who showed up.
there weren't that many people there at first (like 10am), but there was a security guard there, which was our first hint that something was up. i figured they got him just to deal with any angry crowd that showed up, but he said he was there with Tool! by 1030 there were probably like 100 kids who had just rolled by, as they all said, just to make sure. and would you believe it?? the doors opened right after 11, and justin himself comes out!! he was totally shocked that there wasn't a huge crowd -- seems a lot of people 'believed in nothing' -- but was like 'whatever' and then we all went inside!!!"
Most of this morning's emails are like this. Did you all really think this was an April Fool's joke? Zavlin (a member of the Opinion forums) noticed that the headline of yesterday's news post acronymizes to "F()OL LP", but I assure you, that is just a crazy coincidence. The real significance of yesterday's headline, however, remains to be discovered. §
[Posted by Kabir]
Important notes:
-Toolfan48 isn't on TDN's member list.
-The 'real' significance of the news title could be that there are going to be 4 U.S. shows before they leave on tour.
-...or something else.

Well, it looks like my assumptions about the art and logo being fake are turning out to be false. They are being used in all the promos, from magazine ads to the Sony/BMG e-card they put out. I'm really disappointed in the logo. Since the first time I saw it, I read "fool," and I have to adjust my focus to read it as "tool." It's a sadly failed design. Oh well, I love Alex Gray's art. I hope it's stereoscopic in the CD liner like the original is.

Apparently the local station got the leak and played it for an hour straight on Friday night...until the label found out about it and put the kibosh on it. I have heard it twice today, though. It is quite stellar. Danny is killer on it.
According to the station, Tool is playing in Denver on May 7th (or sometime right around then, I didn't write it down) as a warm-up date. The Buell Theater holds 2,882 people. Awfully intimate. Tickets are going to sell out so freaking fast. I would love to see them in Detroit in May. I don't think I have a chance in hell at getting tickets. I've seen them quite a few times and some shows are better than others. This is the one I really want to see, and it kind of depresses me. Oh well, I know I'll see them sometime on this tour.
Anyone want to play the lyrics game with Vicarious? Here's what makes sense to me:
Eye on the TV 'cause tragedy thrills me,
Whatever flavor it happens to be, like:
"Killed by the husband,"
"Drowned by the ocean,"
"Shot by his own son,"
"He used a poison in his tea,"
"He kissed her goodbye,"
That's my kinda story.
It's no fun ‘til someone dies.
Don't look at me like,
I am a monster.
Frown out your one face,
But with the other,
Stare like a junkie,
Into the TV.
Stare like a zombie,
While the mother holds her child.
Watches him die.
Hands to the sky crying,
"Why, oh why?"
’Cause I need to watch things die from a distance.
Vicariously, I live while the whole world dies.
You all need it too, don’t lie.
Why can't we just admit it?
Why can't we just admit it?
We won't give pause until the blood is flowin'.
Neither the brave nor bold, or writers to stories told,
We won't give pause until the blood is flowin'.
I need to watch things die from a good safe distance.
Vicariously, I live while the whole world dies.
You all feel the same, so-
Why can't we just admit it?
Blood like rain come down.
*Drum on grave and ground.
Part vampire,
Part warrior,
Carnivore and voyeur,
*Stare at the transmittal,
Sing to the death rattle.
Credulous (Prejudiced?) at best your desire to believe in,
angels in the hearts of men.
Pull your head on out your head,
please, and give a listen.
Shouldn't have to say it all again.
The universe is hostile,
So impersonal.
Devour to survive,
So it is,
So it’s always been.
We all feed on tragedy.
It's like bood to vampire.
Vicariously, I live while the whole world dies.
Much better you than I.

Wow, that was amazing....I mean just wow. I am honestly at a loss of words. It was not what I thought it was going to be. A lot of people have been saing that this was harder that Lateralus, noooo wayy. It was about par with lateralus. Which is fine, I loved Lateralus.
Songs that stick out ( but they all are great)
Jambi
The Pot ( wow this was great)
Rosseta Stoned
Right in Two
10000 days
Those are the ones that really took me for a ride.
Anyway, Now that I have heard the album. I guess this thread is now about discussion of the album. I did want to say thanks to Rb, Karma, Phit, Bytor, and everyone who has help keep this thread alive for almost a year. I hope that you all enjoyed this album as much as I did. I hope we will see another album much sooner than 5 years. I can't wait to hear everyone's thoughts on it.
...and of course THANK YOU TOOL!!!!!!!
You continue to fucking rock my world guys!!!
PS- I will be in Chicago on May 13th to see them, if any of you shooters live in the area and want to get together let me know. If you want to go to the concert I suggest getting online Sat at 11 am sharp. They will not last.

For Tool...... I have a downloaded version of each CD that is in my car, and I have the actual version that is in my house. This way the real cd won't get scratched.
I have two copies of Undertow, Aenima, and Opiate because they became scratched with age, so I bought a newer copy.
There is no particular reason other than I like to have a perfect " real " copy.
I will buy several 10,000 days, one for me, one for my Brother Mark, and one for my brother Adam. I might even buy one fore my friend Stephen.

According to the station, Tool is playing in Denver on May 7th (or sometime right around then, I didn't write it down) as a warm-up date. The Buell Theater holds 2,882 people. Awfully intimate. No chance that I'm going. I'll be in Vegas then, plus there is no way in hell that I would pay $66 to see a show. On a similar note, Alice in Chains, minus Layne of course, are also doing a club tour (http://www.aliceinchains.com/tour/default.aspx) to get into playing shape to go to Europe. $25!!!! Why can't they be coming to Denver? Wahhhh!

Oh, I've heard it. I don't know how many times, but I just let it play over and over in my car. I've also put songs on iPods, and let it play a couple times when I slept. It's a great album. I read where you compared it to Lateralus, and I kind of thought that too at first because I was expecting some way harder music. I keep thinking of Aenima when I listen to it now. Aenima was so different from Undertow that I almost didn't like it at first, but I couldn't stop listening. Same with this album. I was disappointed by a few tracks at first, but now I love them all. Another thing that brings me back to Aenima:
**SPOILERS**[highlight to read]On "Rosetta Stoned," at about 3:00, the guitar riff that comes in sounds almost exactly like one in "Third Eye." That turned me off to the song at first because it felt derivative. After listening to it more and picking out some of the lyrics, it seems like they did it on purpose. It seems like "Rosetta Stoned" could be the sister song to "Third Eye." They're like equal/opposites in a way. "Third Eye" is about someone struggling to become enlightened, and from what little I can understand of "Rosetta Stoned" it sounds like it's about a sloppy, lost person who couldn't give a fuck about enlightenment. If I'm wrong, I don't want to know.

You seem to have your brain intact. :)
I have heard comparisons to Lateralus and it makes me dizzy.... I think it is far more like Aenima. And as you have noted, there are intentional uses of old riffs on this album. Some ninnies have been bitching about this, without making any effort to figure out why. This is why I have always said that the only lyrics I care about are that of TOOL. They are as important as the music.

I'm digging the album as well, and after seeing the artwork, I'll definitely end up with an official release of the album as well.

I have heard comparisons to Lateralus and it makes me dizzy.... I think it is far more like Aenima. Cool. I like Aenima quite a bit more than Lateralus. Which I'm sure puts me strongly in the minority of Tool fans...
On a related note...
Has anybody pre-ordered an album from Amazon before? I've heard that with DVDs if you pre-order them you get them on release day or maybe even a day early. Wondering if that's the case with CDs also. I suppose it doesn't matter too much, there's an Independent Records near our Drinking Liberally bar, which also occurs on May 2nd...

I am buying it at 8:00am at CATS music. I was going to Pre-order it, but I hear the album is already #5 on Amazon. Way too many people doing it. They state that the record could take 3-5 days past its release date to get there. I am just going to the record store on Tuesday.
Oh, I am not entirely behind what RB and Karma said about it being like Aenima. Yeah, Rosetta and a few other songs have that Aenima feel to it. However, most of the songs are nothing like Aenima. I would say that this album is a mixture of all their previous styles. You will hear hints of all the albums. Parts of the Pot remind me of Sweat. That is just me though. I mean you may agree with RB and Karma 100%. Whatever the case, I think you will enjoy it.
Anyway, you will find out in about a week. :)

I walked around Dublin for an hour and a half in the pouring rain, looking for a copy of 10,000 Days. It was sold out everywhere I checked, because apparently albums that are due out on a Monday in England are released on the previous Friday over here (which means it was on sale all weekend and I didn't frikkin know about it!!). I was terrified I wouldn't find one, but then just as I was about to go insane, I found a tiny little record shop that I had never seen before that had ONE copy left. I actually shreiked with joy when the guy brought it to the counter, destroying my cool facade. He was a huge Tool fan too, so he gave me a discount on it.

Ok, now truth be told...when i first bought this album a while ago...i didn't like it very much [not saying Tool sucks or anything, im just generally not a fan of that genre]
but strangely...the more i listen to the songs...the more i like it...
Tool is starting to grow on me.
also strangely [and irritatingly] right before i was gonna pay for the album and leave the store...MY MP3 PLAYER QUIT WORKING! screen went blank and would not turn off...tried popping the battery in and out...no luck....tried new batteries...fruitless...which is kind of a pisser becuase i started using it on 12/28/05 [my birthday] and today it is 05/06/06...not even six months later..and the thing dies on me! shit!
anyway...bottom line...TOOL KICKS ASS

They have a tendency to do that.
To paraphrase the great Jon Lovitz, "They grow on ya, like a raaaaash."

Yeah, I know it was just 15 pages of TOOL worship, and then you slide in with "uh, tool sucks" Made me laugh, anyway.

I'm of the opinion that this place may change, again, but it's not going anywhere.
