View Full Version : People Smell Bad

I went to a rock show last night for the first time in over a year last night. People smell bad. Seriously, is deodorant too much to ask In the year 2000? The forecast was for 96 degrees...why the hell wouldn't you be expecting to sweat?
On to the show. It was a Idiot Pilot (http://idiotpilot.com/Home.htm)(the band whose CD I won here on the shoot along with the Rilo Kiley one) and Team Sleep (http://www.teamsleep.net/) (Chino from Deftones' side project). I've listened to the Idiot Pilot CD maybe 5 times and I've never heard Team Sleep before, but because I'm a big Deftones fan, I figured that it would be worth the 15 bucks.
There ended up being two opening bands. Scene Index (http://www.sceneindex.com/) and The Start (http://www.thisisthestart.com/). Scene Index were incredibly lame. How am I to learn to sing along to your music if you don't have vocals? Boring stuff. Apparently prog is the new emo. Not my bag.
The Start however were(was?) awesome. Straight ahead rocking, no hint of pretension, no posturing, just rocking. They only played five songs, but they were definitely the stars of the night. I'm usually pretty biased against bands with chick singers...I don't think that I've ever had a good live experience with a lady frontman. But, Aimee was awesome, rocking, kicking, swinging her mic, into it. Good stuff.
Idiot Pilot was pretty good too. Two guys, a guitar, and an I-book. Apparently prog is the new...oh wait. As I've said in another thread, they sound like Radiohead with a Chino-like screamer added. The screamer/guitarist was incredible, I've never seen anybody scream like this guy. Very impressive. The lead singer was preening around the stage like he was Mick Jagger. It seems like something that I would usually hold against a band, but it worked well for him.
Team Sleep however was incredibly disappointing. I'm not sure if the blame should be placed on the venue(it was at a little 300 capacity club that my buddies' high school band used to play in(although I did see Machine Head and Corrosion of Conformity there, and it was grand)), or maybe on the lack of time kept by the rythym section(most notably the drummer filling almost non-stop), or maybe on the fact that they have both a DJ and a synthesizer player(are they still called synthesizers, or is there a cool, hip new name for them(it was a Moog, so I feel like it should still be called a synthesizer)). Wherever the blame falls, the band seemed too droning. It seemed like they were attempting to get me to join Team Sleep. Chino's voice was as stellar as it always seems to be, the only singer whose voice I think sounds better live is Maynard's, but that wasn't nearly enough to keep me interested. Had I not driven my buddy to the show, I probably would have left before their set was over.
Anybody else think that people smell bad?

Anybody else think that people smell bad? It's over 100 out right now. I might smell bad too, because I think deodorant melts at certain tempratures. Combat that with my having to wear a full suit and the heat inside my shirt is probably about 130.
Good god it's hot. I have not noticed down here that people smell like B.O., but there is a smell when you are just hot in general. Sort of like that "just in from mowing the lawn" smell. Of course, most people don't go outside during the day at this time of year, and opt for the lunch in option.

anything that smells remotely bad will smell worse when put into a group. kind of like if you get anythig that makes noise into a group, it will be lots louder, but i don't want to bore you all with analogies:)

Thankfully for everyone around you, your stink was like flowers. No way man, antiperspirant causes breast cancer. Or so I've heard. Antiperspirants use aluminum based products in order to plug up your sweat pores(holes?) and that has at least been equated to breast cancer. I gots no problem with people sweating, just so long as their sweat smells like Degree, or Arid, or Sure...

That is all fine and good, but antiperspirant doesn't cause cancer because you use it for one concert. It happens with people who use it over and over and over again.

Don't worry, I was just kidding anyway. However, you should drink more water than diet soda since 5 diet sodas contain about 1/4 of the sodium that you should be consuming every day. Also, never eat hot dogs.

Anybody else think that people smell bad? Try visiting rock gyms and yoga studios where there are a great percentage of people who believe firmly in natural deodorant, and are mostly not wearing shoes. It's not that the whole room smells, but you can walk through someone's wake and have it curl a nosehair or hundred.
I do have to say that the only time I ever sucker-punched anyone was at a concert and it was because some drunken, shirtless, flailing stoner ran into me twice and got his nasty swass all over my arm -- we're talking dripping. So I punched him directly in the mullet, which inflated my manly chest as I hid behind some guy and his girlfriend.
And, I never stink personally. Although my fingers do smell like butterscotch, yo.
Side note: Gotta say I'm a little deflated by what you have to say about Team Sleep. I didn't realize until a couple days ago that their album was out, and I was all essited. Chino said they were going for a Portishead type of sound. I loves me some Deftones, and especially loves me some Portishead. Damnit.

What really got me today, was a co-worker and I were at the pop machine. I got myself a Mountain Dew 'Live Wire', and he got himself a Diet Pepsi, pointed at my pop and said "I drink diet pop because it is better for you."
That in itself is not so bad, except he went outside to smoke a cigarette.

It's probably just an internet rumor, but to be on the safe side, I only use natural deodorant, not antiperspirant. Tom's of Maine is good.
I spent many years going to punk shows, but the rowdiest concert I ever went to -- I got caught in the middle of several fights and ended up sitting on the bar to get out of the crowd -- was the B52s. So I punched him directly in the mullet, which inflated my manly chest as I hid behind some guy and his girlfriend.
I'm sure that everyone has a "stupid guy at a concert story." One of mine happened at the aforementioned Machinehead/COC show. The guy endeared himself to us so much that he is still referred to as 'Big Red' (we were clever enough to use the color of his tank-top as his designation). He was a typical trog. Long, stringy, sweaty hair whipping everybody in the eye. Completely oblivious to the ettiquette of moshing. After two bands worth of pissing us off, he decided that he would ask us to get him up so that he could crowd surf. Unbeknownst to me, my friends decided to get him in the air in order to let him fall...unfortunately for him, I was holding his feet. Landed right on his head, and promptly got up to thank us for trying.
Side note: Gotta say I'm a little deflated by what you have to say about Team Sleep. I didn't realize until a couple days ago that their album was out, and I was all essited. I seem to be in the unwinning zone lately. The other day I brought home a movie that I swore I would never watch, yet the girl absolutely loves it (one of her very few faults. She's not really that girly for the most part), and she refused to watch it because she knew I wouldn't enjoy it. Somehow this turned into a fight, and I'm still insensitive because I brought home a movie that I didn't want to see knowing she wouldn't want to watch it because I wouldn't like it.
Even if I got off light by not having to sit through some fat girl's Greek Wedding, I have this horrible feeling that it's going to be used against me at a later date.

Remember, I am the master at such things.
The trick is that we want you to actually fool us into believing that you like what we like. It doesn't work when you already told us it sucked. If you have prevously mentioned that you don't like something then figure it will never work to try and do it. And in the future think really hard about something that you say you don't like. Eventually we can use that against you as ammunition.
Is is wrong? Yep. Strange? Yep. Frustrating? Yep. Is it going to stop? No. :)

So, you want honesty sometimes, you want lies sometimes. How are we supposed to tell the difference? You aren't. Women are complicated. It isn't that we don't recognize this about ourselves, most of us do. And lies might be too strong a word. We don't want to be lied to, but often we do not want to know your every thought exactly as it flies through your head and out your mouth. It is always important to be 100% honest about the important things in a relationship, and sometimes it is better to not be blunt about the silly stuff like movies. We do it for you.
However, a large part of this complicated behavior we grow up learning is caused by men. Even though the majority of men claim to want a "down to earth, uncomplicated girl", the reality is not so. The majority of men are programmed to like a challenge, and complicated women fit into that equation. Therefore women who might normally have become completely uncomplicated have a gradual behavior shift the other direction. Too many of us have lost men to complicated women because they are more exciting. I don't think on either part it's always intentional, but it is a reality.
It's part of the game, and whoever claims they are not playing some piece of that game is FULL OF CRAP. :)

ok, ok, I'm a nutritionist and I need to get involved here to dispell rumors.
All commercial cosmetics contain chemicals that cause cancer. Many contain xenohormones which affect reproductive organs in both genders. Saying "anti-perspirant causes cancer" is misleading, however. Some people are more sensitive to these chemicals than others. I would say "anti-perspirant can cause cancer". I, personally, use olive oil, aloe, vitamin E, and zinc to control odor and wetness. I, personally, am sick of the million ways that a human can smell being reduced down to about seven formulas (Degree, Old Spice, etc). The smell of any chemical smell mixture is a total turn-off to me, I'd rather smell like nasty b.o. than like household cleaning products.
Now, on to the diet soda v. regular soda. This depends heavily on your biochemical individuality.
Diet soda sweetened with aspartame is not good for anyone. Aspartame undergoes some serious changes with heat, converting it into things like methanol and formic acid (what fire ants sting you with). I have personally treated people with aspartame poisoning that were suffering from everything from seizures to migraines to heart problems. Monsanto and Searle (the inventor/marketer of nutrasweet) hired thousands of paid P.R. reps to spread the rumor that nutrasweet is non-toxic. 95% of industry sponsored research claims it is non-toxic, 85% of non-industry sponsored research claims that it is toxic. Go figure. Diet soda sweetened with splenda is not good either, mainly because we don't know the long term effects yet, but the short term doesn't look good.
Regular soda is sweetned with high fructose corn syrup. Fructose is a more dangerous sugar than sucrose. It causes more fat storage and puts you at high risk for diabetes. 90% of the world's corn is trangenetically modified (GMO) at this point, so if you drink corn syrup sweetened soda you are drinking GMO soda.
So which is is? Carbonation, in the long run, is not good for the intestinal tract. My advice is to restrict your soda to the occasional sparkling mineral water, sweetened with a little juice if you have to. I made my own soda from vanilla bean and stevia (safe sweetener, but most people think it tastes like ass). In any case, water, drink water.
And yes, hot dogs and other processed meat are the worst thing you can do for your health. After that is refined sugar.

Seriously, I see her point in that all synthetic materials can't be particularly good for our bodies. I guess you just learn to balance what risks you are willing to take for convenience.
The best thing I ever did for my face was start using that mineral only make-up. I never realized that products claiming to be "hypo-allergenic" were still loaded with chemicals that made me break out. My face looks like a million bucks lately.
I have also given up pop and I can't say I miss it. It's so intensely hot around here right now that I need to hydrate and only water does that for me.
