View Full Version : It's all about the anime...
All right, here's a question... Anyone remember an anime show from WAY back? I saw it during the summer of 1982 (I think) There was a guy who was a pitcher on a baseball team. He threw a pitch and the ball disappeared halfway to home plate. He threw two more- same thing. Then all three balls came flying out of the sky. The pitcher tried to catch 'em but they broke his wrist. After being put on the DL, he was recruited to drive some sort of robot or something. At the same time, the story involved these three guys who had different weapons and styles- one guy was kind of fat, wore green and had a mace he'd pull out from behind his breast plate. The second had blue armor and a trident. The third guy was a badass- he was kicked out of his training for being a dick. I do remember part of the training where they jumped off a cliff with a rope tied to their ankles, just short enough so they wouldn't hit their heads on the ground. But anyway, this guy had a staff that broke in two- he carried each half in a holster on each hip and he'd slap 'em together and commence to whooping ass. I can remember all of that, but fuck me if I can remember the name...
Anybody else have a clue?

Sorry I can't help you with that J.K. but if you like anime, see Sky Blue (http://images.hollywood.com/images/quicktime/skyblue_end_t_low.mov) .
I don't remember ever seeing that one.
Here's a couple places to check.
This one maybe seeing the name will help you remember. Just click on the year above and it will list them all from that year.

This site has only Sci-fi Anime, but if you click on the name you get a picture which you might beable to tell from looking at it if it's the movie you are looking for. I'm sure it gives a discription too, but it appears to be in another language.

I'm very ignorant in the ways of anime, so I'm not sure if this counts...but, is anybody watching Avatar: The Last Airbender? (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Avatar:_The_Last_Airbender) I've been watching it with the kiddos, and I think that I like it more than them.

That Ghost in the Shell Stand Alone Complex is a fave of mine, if only it was on at decent hours instead of 1:30 in the morning. I also watched Cowboy Bebob back in the day, check out the movie if you haven't already. Its a really well made flick.
Samurai Champloo is done by the same crew that did Cowboy Bebop. If I weren't so broke right now, I'd get the SC set.

Ohhhh yeah, speaking of good movies Ghost in the Shell is awesome (along with the series, kinda forgot about it). I didn't even know that Cowboy Bebop had a movie, I will look for it over the weekend.
For some reason there are a lot of Samurai Champloo haters? I don't get it, it is such a fun show...
DVR and VOD have helped me keep up with most of the Anime I like.

WHOO HOO! I'm the big anime lover so I might be yapping here alot. Anybody got the animatrix? SHINICHIRO WATANABE is the guy who y'all talking about. he did cowboy bebop, wolfs rain, witch hunter robin, Samurai Champloo and kid's and detective story in the animatrix. I like trigun too just wish it was more than 26 eps but I notice alot of animes dont go past 26 for some reason. I think the ghost in the shell show is 26 as well. allso spike voice's is tom the lil robot host guy. I'm not sure if Big O is an anime, I know like some of the same ppl who work on the good old batman toon form the 90's work on big O. I dont watch the new one at all. As you can tell from my name I love one piece! It and dragon ball Z 'bout my fave animes

The first season of Big O bombed in Japan and it was cancelled. But because of it's popularity in the US, it was brought back (by Cartoon Network) for a second season, produced in Japan, specifically for American audiences. They ordered 26 episodes but after the second season they decided it just didn't fit with the direction [adultswim] was going. And then it was dropped. That was in 2003.
It is still available through [adultswim] on demand.
Do you consider it to not be anime because it dealt with western themes and was later produced specifically for American audiences?

I was the wierd kid back in 4th grade. Everyone loved Pokemon at that time. I HATED it, and preferred Dragonball Z instead. I now don't really have an opinion on Pokemon and I dislike DBZ.
Evangelion and Gundam Wing = win.
Both of those are absolutely awesome animes, and Gundam Wing should be on Adult Swim. I regret not watching it when it was on Cartoon Network when I was a child, but they probably edited and censored the hell out of it anyway.

Kind of a neat discussion point to bring up, because pretty much the only anime I like is the ones that have western influence. Cowboy Bebop and Samurai Champloo both use the three act story telling structure, much different than the open ended structure of most Japanese half hour TV shows. And Ghost in the Shell clearly has western influences, sometimes by the story structure, but more noticably in the absense of most Japanese tradition, i.e. no bath houses/shoes off indoors/etc., although that might just be a more realistic view of the future (its rarely mentioned but the show is set in Japan, right?).

GitS is set in Japan. The characters all look decidedly western, too, except maybe the Chief.
I was going to say something about Paranoia Agent, but instead, I'm going ot get drunk.

Avatar is some bullshit that Nick pulled out of their ass to capatilize on the overwhelming amount of intrest in Japanimation. Just like Totally Spies or Teen Titans, except it's less campy.
However, some of the art work is sexy as hell. I really don't judge a show on where it was made or not, all that I give a shit about is weither it sucks or not which is way many anime fans in genral fucking piss me off. Most of them are too retarded to realize that.

Well, there was only ONE major thing that was edited, and it wasn't edited too well.
One episode when Heero's arm was bleeding, Toonami edited out the blood digitally, but you could still hear it drip.
