Me and my mom HATE Microsoft Windows, so we are thinking of switching to Linux (Linspire, Lindows, Suse, Mandrake, Red Hat, ect).

Is Linux better or worse than windows? just wondering...

Why do you hate Windows? It's pretty much the easiest OS to use, offers the greatest volume of software that it can use, and is the easiest to have repaired when it fails.

Don't gimme the whole "It crashes blah blah" shit. Computers crash when users misuse them, whether its deleting important system files for no goddamned reason, going to too many porno sites with no adware, popup blockers, or antivirus software, or trying to run programs that are much to advanced on an old system with low amounts of ram, not enough hard drive space, slow processor, etc.

it's more stable then windows and in my opinion safer (most spyware/virii are programmed specifically for windows)

and it depends on which version of linux you use. and which windowmanager. my husband (and I on occasion) uses linux and swears by it. just a lot of games don't have linux ports.

er, linux can be just as easy, depending on the version you use. =p and linux is also easy to repair when it fails. it just doesn't fail as often as windows does

I've had three computers in my life, and built the second two by myself. I have NEVER, I repeat NEVER had a system crash. I havn't even so much as lost a word document that I was typing. Windows crashes when people don't take care of their computers. They dowload all the shitty ass software they can, let it all run in the background, never defragment or run their monthy antivirus scanners, don't take precautions when they surf the net, and generally go 'click-click-click-click' and mash keys when the thing isn't going fast enough for them.

My mom decided to delete all of her program files and Windows folder once. When asked why, she said that she needed more space to save stuff she downloaded from the net.

Why? It's not like if people stop buying Windows all of his 87 Billion dollars will go away. Hell, he's lucky to have been around THIS long, look at all the other tech companies that have gone down hill in teh time that Microsoft has been around. (Most of them BECAUSE they sucked way, way worse than Microsoft.

If you don't like it, go get something better, but analyze WHY you don't like it before you bash it, don't just jump on the Microsoft Stinks bandwagon. It's unbecoming of you.

It's not that Windows can't handle it, it's that people have shitty computers and expect them to run as fast as possible.

Prior to Service Pack 2, I hated Windows for its massive security holes (Active X, shipping with all ports open, etc.).
I hate Microsoft for buying its competition, in order to put them out of business. (Otherwise known as being "Netscaped".)
I hate that Internet Explorer is so entwined into the OS that you can't even delete it.
I hate trying to figure out which out-of-date driver is causing my system to freak out.
I love the large amount of software available for the system.
I hate having to constantly worry about spyware, adware, viruses and having my computer zombiefied.
I hate that Microsoft has created a "kill switch" which can remotely deactivate my computer if they think I didn't pay for my copy of Windows.
I hate that Microsoft keeps scaling back Longhorn, while continuing to delay it's release.
I hate sloppy internet-coders who don't bother to make sure their site will render properly in any browser other than Internet Explorer.

TB, I'm glad your Windows experience has been good. The OS has much to recommend it. But to blame the myriad problems and shortcomings of Windows, over the years, solely on "user error", is, well, silly.

That's a reason to hate Microsoft, and if you don't like the comany because of that, okay, but most people say 'Windows Sucks', when they have no idea what they're talking about.

I hate that Internet Explorer is so entwined into the OS that you can't even delete it.

It's set up to run all of the organization of files on your computer, and while you can't delete it, it's not a huge program and you can choose to never use it. Firefox and other programs like it work perfectly fine with Windows. (I prefer IE, though, it's one less driver website I have to remember when it comes to update time.)

I hate trying to figure out which out-of-date driver is causing my system to freak out.

That's a hardware issue. If you install an old part on a new system, or a brand new part that perhaps had been marked down because a new model was put out, most people don't instantly go to the manufacturers website and download the most up to date drivers. We can't expect Microsoft to handle third-party drivers and give their bandwidth to allow us to download them, but it would be nice.

I love the large amount of software available for the system.
Me too! I would like to see it available for other systems, though. It's kind of like a catch-22. People won't buy macs untill they make more software for them, but the software companies won't make Mac software 'till more people buy macs.

I hate having to constantly worry about spyware, adware, viruses and having my computer zombiefied.

That's just what we have to deal with in our society. Microsoft could virtually remove the possibility of viruses, adware, and spyware, but that could lead to greatly reduced performance on the internet. You hafta give a little to get a little. Besides, I use Ad-Aware and McAffee VirusScan Enterprise 8.0.0, and unless I go to some Warez or Gamez site, or am directed to some porno site, I don't have any problems.

I hate that Microsoft has created a "kill switch" which can remotely deactivate my computer if they think I didn't pay for my copy of Windows.

If you paid for it, and are in posession of the CDs and such, it's never going to affect you.

Completely agree.

[Quote]I hate sloppy internet-coders who don't bother to make sure their site will render properly in any browser other than Internet Explorer.
Yeah, well, that's not Microsofts problem, now is it?!

TB, I'm glad your Windows experience has been good. The OS has much to recommend it. But to blame the myriad problems and shortcomings of Windows, over the years, solely on "user error", is, well, silly.

Meh, whatever works for ya! I'll stick with XP till they come out with the 64 bit version, then I'll pirate it.

I don't want to seem like I'm arguing with you , just explaining my experiences and thoughts about Windows.

Linux is a nice little OS that can do a lot with little horsepower and memory. However, it is not really an operating system for the average user. MS Windows technology is made with KISS in mind. I don't mean the band but Keep It Simple Stupid.

The complex stuff is there but mostly hidden from the user (though, it isn't too difficult to access it), while Linux has tons of stuff that you must know how to do to really utilize the full potential of the operating system.

Now, Linux has a ton of free applications that will act like many of the expensive Microsoft applications (like MS Office). However, if you are a gamer, you are going to be mostly out of luck. There are games meant to work with Linux and some developers release patches for games to work with Linux but it doesn't happen as often as many would like.

I would look into the different versions of Linux and make sure you know how to install it correctly, then research your needs before you jump ship. Or, you can have a multi-boot system that uses both Windows and Linux.

THe government can come in my house every fucking day for all I care, I have nothing to hide.

Tydyed Bandit
07-17-2005, 08:41 PM
Less than 10% of all identity theft victims were victimized because of the internet. 90% is still the ol' diggin thru the trash or stealing mail.

Besides, if people are dumb enough to use their credit cards on unsecure sites on the net, not keep up on their credit statements, and use unsecured wireless networks, they deserve to have thier money taken.

Most credit companies offer protection for it nowadays, anyway.

there are things other then illegal activity that I'd like to be private about. Say I was working on the formula for cold fusion and the government/microsoft was snooping and saw I had solved it. They'd take it and capitalize on it and leave me in the dust.

that's also like saying it's OK to be a peeping tom if the person you're watching isn't doing any illegal activity. frankly I own the computer I built it if you're not me then you should not be on it. period

And if you figured out a formula for cold fusion, you hsould share it with the world, not hoarde it and reap profits for you and you alone. (Besides, ARE you working on cold fusion? If so, keep records of your work. Print it all out and mail it certified mail to yourself, then keep it and never open it unless you feel it was copied. It's the poor mans patent.)

I wish somebody had gotten communism right.

frankly if they're going to trample on one right what's stopping from trampling on them all? this country was founded on basic human rights and freedoms. one of them is privacy. and snooping on people's computers is not going to stop terrorists. when they are bound and determined to do something, nothing will stop them. if there's one thing i learned working at the nuthouse, if someones determined to do something they will, no matter how much you watch them

Back on topic:

I am one of those who actually likes Windows. It is simple to use, it is prevalent every where you go, and most programs out there are compatible with Windows. I also think that Windows is more stable now than people give it credit for. Sure, they had the Millenium (sucked balls), but most of the other versions were actually pretty good. I have never had a "Windows" caused crash with a home computer. The only time I had ever had crashes were because my hard drive was starting to die and then it finally did. Oh, and there was that time at work when the IT person loaded windows wrong on my system.

I had always thought that Unix was the original of the two, and Linux was just a knock-off. Either way both are very stable and secure, but there is a pretty big learning curve to become familiar with them. To be good, you just about have to take a course.

98 sucked ass!

Windows 95 version B was a good and stable OS. NOt sure about 2k3, I think Razorback has that one.

Linux is really stable. Takes a learning curve and a few installations, but after you get the hang of it it rocks! I have yet to crash my linux after I learned it, and I have had the same distro for 5 years now.

yea..they both run on the ntfs kernal..but xp is 1 too pretty 2 has extra bloat..like say you wanted to use msn messenger. xp has a messenger specifically for xp and not compatible with msn messenger..so say you wanted to use the webcam feature of msn messenger..and the person who wants to watch is using xp..they wouldn't be able to watch it b/c they're using 'windows messenger' not 'msn messenger'

I highly recommend a Dyson (http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=4837476&type=product&id=1051384413232) if in the market for a non-sucking vacuum...or something like that. Best vacuum alive.

shoot..if 98 se was booted for more then 24 hours straight it wigged out =p

I reboot all my Windows OS's at least twice a day, except for servers. I never used a Windows 98 SE server. ;) Did you?

yea..they both run on the ntfs kernal..but xp is 1 too pretty 2 has extra bloat..like say you wanted to use msn messenger. xp has a messenger specifically for xp and not compatible with msn messenger..so say you wanted to use the webcam feature of msn messenger..and the person who wants to watch is using xp..they wouldn't be able to watch it b/c they're using 'windows messenger' not 'msn messenger'
I've got XP and I don't use the Windows Messenger that comes with it. I downloaded MSN Messenger and have no problems with it working properly.

i tried to use msn, but the combonation of going to the internet, using Yahoo and Msn, and running antivirus programs was just too much for my computer to handle :(

Instead of multiple chat programs, use Trillian instead. It's a program that allows you to chat via MSN, Yahoo, ICQ, and Aol Messenger. If you are having troubles running Trillian, Internet, and Anti-Virus I would suggest more ram.

shoot, why do you reboot that much? that's harder on a computer. I think my current record uptime was 3 weeks and that only ended because I had to move

shoot, why do you reboot that much? that's harder on a computer.

It really does nothing to the computer. Turning it completely off and then quickly on does. The biggest thing affected by a reboot would be the monitor as it clicks off to standby back to on.

In any event, I reboot because I auto-delete the cache on every restart. It is for security reasons and also clears up any crashed programs or funny little Windows issues caused by the registry, DLL's, blah blah blah.

RB, I'm fairly computer illiterate. Please walk me thru the steps to auto-delete the cache at re-start. If it involves anything too complicated disregard this plea. Thanks....hell forget that, do you know of any links that could help. I'm getting crashes on the comps at work. We're running Windows 98.( I know that's probably the biggest problem right there).

What's cache?

a cache is a packet of memory on your hard drive that is available as extra memory to the computer. you have to restart your PC every once in awhile to clean it out, which is why computers that have been on for a week or more run slower than a Pc that has only been on for a day or two.

Razorback

I should say that I meant auto-delete the swap file. The reboot of course dumps the cache.

that would be very bad.
