Why all the animosity?

I have been reading some of the threads (duh what else do you do on a message bored), and I have noticed something; most of the members on this message bored are older members (not in age, but in the length of time they have been posting). Anyhoo the point of that comment is that most of the “older” members don’t really like new members. Not individually but just as a group you older members don’t seem to like a lot of the newer people who join…why don’t you like us? :confused:

The veterans around here will usually only flame noobs under the following circumstances:

Spamming- If you register a username with the sole purpose of posting to hock your product/project. We don't take kindly to unsolicited advertising.

Belligerency- Here's the usual chain of causation that leads to flaming for belligerency: A noob comes in, posts in the wrong forum and/or exhibits horrendous grammar/spelling. A veteran kindly attempts to correct their error by offering constructive criticism, and the noob responds by attacking the veteran in an exceedingly prickish manner. Do this and you will be toast.

Avoid these two things and you should be fine.

We're very leery of noobs because more often than not they come in and either quote Jay once and never come back, try to pimp their spam on us and never come back, or they act like complete assholes and never leave despite mutiple beatings with the banstick. Most newbies don't take the time to lurk around a bit and get to know us or visit the archives before making incessent posts about something we might have discussed not three days prior. All we ask for from newbies who want to hang around and become regulars is coherent thought, decent grammar, and some respect. Treat the geezers with respect and you will gain respect. Pretty simple. After the initial period of hazing, we can all be one big happy...

A lot of the reasons we are leery of newbies have been deleted with threads they have started. If you're on all the time like some of the regulars are, you see a lot more people come and go with their lame posts that consist of swearing and name calling.

There are some older members here who flame anybody and everybody that is new. There are also some of us that sound like we are flaming each other, when really it's the way we kids play with each other. Granted, there are a couple of people here that really annoy me, but even then my ribbing is done with tongue planted firmly in cheek.

This board, unlike many others, operates more like the real world. That could be because many of the older members do know each other outside of here, and many have been on here since the first inception of the board back in 2002.

It is helpful for newbies to sometimes think about what you would do in the real world. This is a party of sorts. What would people react like if the first time you are introduced you start spouting off how kick ass this one movie guy is, or try to sell people something, tell them they are wrong, or speak with extremely bad grammar? They would not be too enthusiastic to hang out with you.

Also, when it comes to arguments, keep in mind that you are new to the collective friendship. If you are standing at a party and you see two friends fighting, do you walk over and get in the middle? Not unless you are nuts.

Same goes for teasing. What you may think is animosity is really just two people kidding around. JJ and I can call each other tards, even though I adore JJ. Just like real world friends we love to tease each other, but God help anyone else who does it. It's sort of the "I can complain about my mother, but you can't do it."

Hope this helps a little. There are times when EVERYONE on here gets out of control and flames someone up. Just don't let it bother you. Be courteous, use proper punctuation, have fun with it. You are right, after time you get accepted in the fold, although you may not make fast friends with everyone on here...yet again, just like real life.

Your name is kinda long, anything over say, five or six syllables isn't good for a net handle. It forces people to abbreviate you and since we don't know you, we don't know how you'll react. I'm not going to type out " Hey, dress_sexy_at_my_funeral, what do you think of such and such ?" I'm going to end up calling you "dsatmf" which might offend you, or maybe you wont realize I'm addressing you.

Something that chaps some "bored" members asses is, people who've been here a week posting sixty times a day and treating this place like it's a an IM service or chatroom. If I have to explain the difference between a chat room and a message "bored" to you , then you probably don't belong here. To sum it up , you shouldn't be in a rush to post the first thing that comes to your mind, you should consider if what you're about to post will entertain or enlighten anyone. Or if you're just saying it to see your opinions in print.

No matter how cute someone thinks it is when they're doing it , it's just annoying to most of the rest of us.

What made me want to be part of this community was that people were witty and intelligent and fun to read, even when I disagreed with their point of view. Becuase they put time and effort into what they posted. Whenever a new person shows up we have to explain ourselves again and again to the point of monotony. We should have an orientation once a month or something or a thread like "How to be a good poster" that we can refer new people to everytime one shows up. Sometimes I think we're mean to new people( or we just ignore them) because we just get tired of repeating ourselves.

We're all entitled to "a case of the Mondays" now and again.

Your right, I don’t think anyone has flamed me yet but like I said I’m not the brightest tool in the shed (and yes it may be that fact that I’m Canadian) so I might have just not gotten any of the meanness directed at me. I just brought it up because I had seen some posts about the general suckieness of new people. I would also like to say sorry about my name being so long, this is the first message bored I have ever joined, and I only joined this one because I had read good things in books about it (books meaning silent Bob speaks out) and when I read some articles on this web site I thought it was funny. All of you guys are really smart and quick witted, and I really enjoy reading your post. And I can handle tons of criticism so don’t worry about hurting my feelings or anything; feel free to make fun of my terrible punctuation and grammar and anything stupid I say.
