View Full Version : My good deed for the day...

I went to El Pollo Loco for lunch today and there was this homeless guy. He knocks on my window (which I hate) and asks me if I could buy him something to eat, so I said, you know what, I don't have any cash on me, but I would be willing to get you something. So, he goes, thank you. I asked him, what do you want? He goes to the menu, looks at it and wants a BRC. I was like, sweet, he looked at the dollar menu, that was really nice of him to do that. I wouldn't have had a problem giving him a large meal with a drink, but that is what he wanted. So I told him, ok, I am going to go through the drive thru and wait for me over at the exit, so I got him his BRC, got my food, and pull out to give it to him and he is gone. So, I wait for him for about five minutes and he is no where to be found. So, I pull out of the parking lot, and pull back in on the other side looking for him, gone.
Ahh, just another typical day in the life of ILovePapaSmurf.

Good ol' bums, that is one thing that college campuses definately have a lot of. (Not just the students, either!)
There's this one guy that must have come up to me 8 times with the same story. "I work for [BLANK] Camera Shop, and my car has run out of gas. I'm supposed to be shooting for a HS Prom right now, do you have a few dollars for some gas?"
The first time this dude came up to me I knew what he was doing but said, "I don't have any cash, but if you come with me to the gas station I can pay for you to fill up your gas can."(He was holding a gas can)
When I said that to him, he stopped for a minute, stared right in my eyes, and yelled "AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHGHGHHHHHHHHH HHHHHH!!!" at me, while running away. It was one of the funnier things I've ever seen.
OSU also has the worlds only bum that drives a Mustang. I see him sitting on the sidewalk every day, but at night I see him cruising around in an 'okay' condition 02 Mustang. Weird.

Yeah,
Here in Boulder you get a fairly good cross section of bums from the hippy to the average street person. My personal favorites include the 'hill rats' always trying to sell weed, the 10 or so nurtured Boulder bums that everybody knows and feeds, and the general mass of road people that enjoy Boulders lax atmosphere. We get elitist bums that will only eat vegan, oh and thier dog that they own is vegan too. I think it is strange that people who are begging for food own a vegan dog. But then Boulder is strange.

In Chicago instead of begging, they sell newspapers called Street Wise. It's just a $1. You buy one and then you can use it as a shield against the others. Pretty smart idea.
However, my dad always said the solution is easy. Feed the homeless to the hungry.

No, I mean I'll go to subway and get one. Unless I see that Jared guy there. If he's there I will have to leave, because I hate that asshole and his healthy living bullshit.

I saw a homeless person today as well, they asked me for a dollar for food. So I gave them five bucks, but I drew a happy face on it. Then I found a cop and told them the bum mugged me and that they took my birthday money which had a happy face on it. They searched him and threw him in jail...for you see you get fed in jail and I dont have to see you, its a win win for everyone.
Also if you have roaches in your house do you leave out food at night so that they can eat? DONT GIVE HOMELESS PEOPLE MONEY/FOOD/Anything other than a boot in the ass. jeez...You know why that guy left you when you went to get him food? He didnt want food, he wanted money for booze/drugs/because he is too lazy to work.
Did you say you went to "The Crazy Chicken"?

Not all homeless people are like that. He was probably rushed off the property by someone who worked at El Pollo Loco. Some of these people really need help and if he wanted money, he would have walked away when I told him I was paying with a credit card. You better be joking with what you said, because I find your post really wrong in a lot of ways.

Unfortnatly, Portland is plagued with "Street Kids". Kids with Hot Topic wardrobes, perfectly died hair, and Pit Bulls. It's a city where drugs are cheap and easy to get and it is cool to sit on the streets and ask for change. It kinda changes your idea of the homeless, because the people who really need help are the ones who never ask, it is the useless bastards who stink up our streets and let their dogs (without vet care, may I add) shit all over and make a general nuisence of themselves till you are just so damned jaded you don't want to do anything for the ones who really need you. I swear, when one of those lazy motherfuckers in their "Misfits" t-shirts and $400 dollar boots ask me for beer change, I begin to understand where the hate for the downtrodden at least starts. It is hard to stay openminded and openhearted.

Here in San Bernardino, I have been known to weed out those who are in need of help and who aren't. Like one guy approached me at Denny's and asked me for spare change because he and his wife were hungry and they needed money to get food for themselves and their baby. On a brand new bike I might add. The next day he did the same thing. I told him to go bother someone else stupid enough to fall for his 'story.'
This guy really was in need of help. He didn't want hard cash, he wanted food. Actual food and I was willing to help. He was dirty, and had a trash bag full of stuff. It is good to help out someone in need.
And Marks, you are so not funny.

I don't give money to the homeless beggers standing on the street corners. It is mostly a scam with them. If you offer food or something else, most will turn it down or get angry with you.
I actually was with a guy who gave a lady some money. Later that day when we drove back through, she was getting picked up in a Mercedes. She and her family apparently spread out over various intersections and made quite a killing.

I always give homeless people money. Well, not always, but its the rule not exception. When people say to me, "You know they're just going to spend it on drugs or alcohol." my usual response is, "So?". I mean really, it's not like most of these people are one hot meal away from turning their lives around. For most of them its the last stop. And if I can give 'em a little money to buy whatever they need to ease the pain on their way down, well, that's fine with me.

I feel your bleeding hearted comments, but by giving them money you're enabling them, actually encouraging them to continue living the way they are.
When someone asks me for money I usually give them the address of the local shelter/day labor place.

So if I don't give them the two bucks they're going to straighten out their lives and join AA? Never quite thought of it that way before.
Good idea about refering them to shelters though.

I'm not sure where I picked it up, but I usually respond to beggars with, "I'm sorry, I don't smoke." By the time they figure it out, I'm far enough away that they wait for the next person. I know, I know, I'm an a-hole.
