With the news that Topher Grace is in as a villain, I can't help but hope he's playing Venom. "Gasp," you say? He's the antithesis of Eddie Brock from the comics. BUT, I couldn't help but think about how perfectly it would change the relationhip between Venom and Spider-Man to fit with the theme they've already established in the flicks. With great power comes great responsibility. With great power also comes great irresponsibility. Topher would be perfect as Toby's equal-and-opposite.

With Sandman and Venom as the probable villains, I sure hope to hell he's not playing Sandman.

They could bring in the Black Cat turn her into some sort of transvestite...

Was that wrong?
That was wrong.
I shouldn't have said that...

I was pleased to hear that Topher was cast and agree that he would add a new dynamic to the Venom character that would make his relationship with Parker much more interesting. Not to mention, y'know, in the process actually making an interesting character out of Venom.

But who knows, maybe he won't play Venom at all. Personally I'm crossing my fingers that he'll be playing my other favorite lame villain (http://www.spiderfan.org/characters/hypnohustler.html).

I had to post real quick before running off to work-

I think Topher would make a TERRIBLE Venom. What I think they should do is briefly introduce Venom in this movie, have him meet and create Carnage (to be played by Grace), then spin Venom off into his own movie.

My $.02

I found this a while ago and completely forgot about it until the latest round of casting news.

"Apparently the first outline of the Spiderman 3 movie has been completed. Anyway, the script involves Spider-Man going up against the Chameleon and his brother (Brother?) Kraven the Hunter. When Spidey stops the Chameleon from embezzling all the Daily Bugle's money, he enlists Kraven to help him in hunting Spider-Man down. The interesting part of this story is that the script allegedly calls for one person to act as the Chameleon, including impersonating all the other people that he disguises himself as."

Don't know how reliable the source is, but I thought I'd add it, for what it's worth. I could see Thomas Haden Church and Topher Grace in these roles, but IMO they are not the greatest villians in the broad scheme.

While we are on the subject...It was my feeling after watching Spidey 2 that we had the set-up for Hobgoblin (Harry) and Lizard to be villains in 3. Anybody else think this was the direction we were headed?

I kind of figured that Hobgoblin (or the second iteration of the Green Goblin to be truer to Harry's role from the comics) would be the villain in the final movie they plan on doing....that his character will build until he's the ultimate enemy. The Lizard, I didn't think about at all as an upcoming villain. Did I miss something? I know Professor Yet-To-Become-The-Lizard was in the flick, but I didn't catch him being set up as a future villain.

The thing about Sandman and Venom, I got from a string of scoops AICN.......that preproduction is working with effects that use a lot of "sand" and that busts of Venom are turning up in a lot of the offices.

I definitely think these are the characters to go with.

I think it that Venom would be a bitchin' villain for Spider-Man III.

I dunno, i grew somewhat tired after the 2nd Spiderman came ... im sick of being dissapointed by Tobey Mcguires face .... cant they get someone else to play batman?

I for one push forward Kevin Smith for the role .... who says spiderman cant be fat ? .. and silent ... and like comics .... yah ... Silent Spiderman!

Okay, real thoughts, the Venom would be waaaaay cool :D

dude the silent Spiderman wasn't in the comics, he talks all the time, it was on the Electric Company. Get it right.

I think the only explanation is that Raimi really is making 3 & 4 back to back. Raimi said he really didn't like Venom, not because he hates the character, but because the Venom story is more about Venom than Spiderman. Plus, Raimi was quoted as saying Topher had all the qualities to show many complex emotions, something Brock isn't quite known for.

My guess is that the Venom stuff is just made up, or that the beginnings of Venom will be shown in 3 and developed in 4.

Personally, I feel that while having Harry return as Hobgoblin is expected, it is the best dramatic way to go. Now that Harry knows Peter's secret, it really sets up an interesting story, the best friend that is hiding revenge and could exploit both Parker and Spiderman.

I actually like the fact that Topher is added to the cast of 'Spider-man.' It just gives me more eye candy to drool over. ;)

Oh, that and he is a fine actor.

So seeing as some asshats are trying to ruin this thread I'm taking over.

My Problem with the Spiderman Movies, and it pains me to say this, is Sam Rami. I dont think he is the right man for the job. Maybe a Blade Movie or a Nightwing or something, but Spiderman...he doesnt cut it for me. The Spiderman on the Screen in Spiderman 1 and 2 is the same personas Peter Parker. Spiderman is suppposed to be a wise cracking smartass who uses his alias as an escape from Peter Parker. In the movies so far Spiderman IS Peter Parker with Muscles, and thats not right.
Its like Batman, Bruce Wayne is not Batman, Bruce Wayne is the Mask Batman puts on. Batman thinks of himslef as Batman 24/7 Spiderman is TWO differnt people Peter Parker and Spiderman.

But I am hoping for Venom and Sandman or both in SP3

Matt1

Spiderman is TWO differnt people Peter Parker and Spiderman.
If Spider-Man and Peter Parker are two different people, why is Spider-Man always bitching about Peter's problems? :)

I agree that when Peter puts on the mask that it allows him to be more extroverted and sardonic. But two completely different personalities? Hardly. He's not psychologically messed up like Batman or Daredevil; he's just an average guy who wants to do the right thing. The appeal of the character is that underneath that mask, he is Peter Parker, with all the same problems and foibles as the rest of us. As far as I'm concerned, Raimi and the screenwriters nailed that aspect dead on.

You are correct though, he does need to up Spidey's humor quotient. Well, actually, he doesn't really need to. If he keeps making them just like the second one, I'll be very happy. But it definitely wouldn't hurt.

I loved the Spiderman movies. I was very uneasy about how they would turn out. They did a great job in my opinion. They could of done much worse.

I hope Topher Grace is playing ELECTRO.

CityBoy

Also, you know Dr.Connor is the enemy in SPIDEY 3 ...

They've already had his cameo in 2, ... he's the Lizard, he tries to create a way to regenerate lost limbs and he is morphed into reptillian DNA etc. etc. etc.

My thoughts are Topher being either Electro or Carnage... or possibly...

no... surely not... a replacement cast member for the Hobgoblin?
