Not much to say, since the actual expo is a day off, but the PS3 just had their pre E3 conference, with one particularly impressive tech demo:

I think photo realism is one generation away.

Hmm, the link worked last night. I guess even a huge site like IGN can keep us from enjoying their overflowing bandwidth.

I found these stats last night. I don't remember the link, but I printed them out:

The PS3 uses a PowerPC-based Cell processor, a new chip that Sony says includes eight cores which are clocked at 3.2 GHz... each.

Nividia delivers the graphics engine, codenamed "RSX". The chip is based on a 550 MHz GPU that offers 1.8 TFlops performance. RSX will support full HD at 1080p in two channels and integrate 256 MByte GDDR3 memory at 700 MHz.

"RSX will be the most sophisticated graphics processor ever built, representing 1500 person-years of investment. When combined with the Cell, it will provide an astounding two teraflops of floating point horsepower," said Jen-Hsun Huang, CEO of Nividia. "A measure of the extraordinary processing power of RSX compared to current-generation game consoles is the number of transistors it will contain: 300 million."

The console receives 256 MByte of Rambus' new XDR memory that is clocked at 3.2 GHz. Total system performance is 2 TFlops, according to Sony.

Interfaces include six USB 2.0 ports, as well as slots for Memory Stick, SD, and CompactFlash media and a detachable 2.5-inch harddrive. The console will support Wi-Fi (802.11b/g) and Bluetooth for up to seven wireless controllers.

Since the Playstation 3 is backwards compatible to the original Playstation, the disc-drive can read CD-ROM, CD-R, CD-RW, SACD, DVD, DVD+R, DVD+RW, DVD-R as well as the new Blu-ray format (BD-ROM, BD-R, BD-RE, BD-Video) that can store up to 54 GBytes of data.

Holy Crap.

I can't find any specific specs on the Xbox360, but just from what I've heard and from what they're saying about the PS3... there is really no competition.

I have no idea what you just said.

550 MHz GPU, 1.8 TFlops, 1080p, 256 MByte GDDR3?

Shorthand: PS3 game discs will be able to hold more than 5 times as much as they can right now, and the system should be able to eat it up.

I can't wait to see how gameplay looks. It's going to be freakish. I'm still amazed when I see games like Splinter Cell and FarCry.

There's some amazingly good looking stuff coming out (most of the Xbox 360 stuff is actual footage, not demos). The Xbox 360 looks to be similarly matched right now, in terms of technology. The PS3's Cell processor was either going to be huge or mishandled, but if you've seen the tech demos, it looks like programmers are going to crunch huge numbers with the machine. The first thing I've noticed is that its the lighting and texturing that is going to define the look of the next generation. A number of the polygon models I've seen in the demos could be done on this generation, but to get the true look and glare of skin, dirt, metal, etc. is what really sells these graphics. Also, self-shadowing finally looks convincing, not like a struggling algorithm.

Anyway, really excited to see Perfect Dark Zero up and running (gorgeously, of course) on the Xbox 360. That game is one of the reasons I originally bought a GameCube, only to have Rare jump ship and delay the game half a decade (bastards).

I haven't seen any actual games on the PS3 that really peak my interest right now, but the graphics alone should sell the system. That, and the PS3 seems to be the only console using advanced media, i.e. the Blu-ray discs, which can actually contain 5 layers for up to 100 GB of storage (Imagine GTA: Planet Earth).

Of course, Nintendo opted to show nothing of their new console, besides the casing, which is miraculously tiny. Supposedly they are hiding some huge secret in terms of the controller, or, there's a crazy rumor going around that the system will include the option to enable 3-D viewing via budget LCD headsets (a good reason why the console can hook up to computer monitors). Still, everything sounds rather dissapointing from Nintendo, except for the new Zelda trailer and the announcement of a Super Smash Brothers 3 Online for Revolution.

Whew! I'm truly sorry if you actually read all of that. I'll have more raving and bitching later.

I have no idea what you just said.

550 MHz GPU, 1.8 TFlops, 1080p, 256 MByte GDDR3?

GPU- Graphics Processing Unit. That spec is pretty good- the best graphics card you can buy for a PC right now is 256 MHz.

1.8 Teraflops- basically, how often the computer can update the display- I always though it had something to do with the FLOating Point Unit in the PC, hence the name, but I may be wrong. Anyway, Big = good.

1080p- the highest definition of high definition- nowadays, most DVD's are in 480 p (progressive), but broadcast HDTV (the clearest of the clear) is in 1080i. The numbers stand for the lines of resoultion, and the "i" refers to the fact that the lines are refreshed in a interlaced pattern, where as "p" means they are refreshed progressively. 1080i is good, very good. It's the best available.

256 MByte GDDR3= very fast RAM.

In all, the specs ARE impressive. It's too bad Microsoft is beating them to market by over a year......NOT!!!

Why? Because of graphics?

Maybe I'm just mellowing with age, but, graphics are a lot less important to me than they used to be. Give me a game that is fun, the graphics are secondary.

Not just the graphics, but the whole platform. DarthMaulrat said exactly what everyone was talking about at work last night when I found this stuff:

GTA: Earth... Steal a C-130 from a Navy base in the Indian Ocean, fly to Rome, boost a Lamborghini, and fly it back to Los Angeles...

that would be cool...

The only problem is that Blu-Ray is not the ONLY potential format, nor has it been chosen as the standard for HiDef DVD, yet...always dangerous to adopt a non-standard format...plus, that means if there IS another format, the PS2 won't be able to play those discs...I'm not knocking the system, just trying to poke holes in those awesome specs.

I've stated before that I'm a Microsoft guy when it comes to gaming, and I think the 360 will present some really exciting options that tie in to Windows-based software. Plus, I hate Sony, and, no matter how good their hardaware's performance specs are, I'll bet their games are STILL full of jaggies.

It's all about the games...games make the system, not hardware.

From what I understand, HD-DVD format has been decided- an HD-DVD will only hold up to 30GB on a dual layered disc. But if your arguement is soley based on the games, then that comes down to the designers and their ability to use the full potential of the system, not the system itself. Both systems are going to be impressive, but to me, the PS3 just looks as if it's going to have more options as far being a total media center.

I definitely will be buying the PS3 over the Xbox 360, but I have to say I like the look of the 360 much, much better. The PS3 controller looks like a Batarang.

I always thought it was the PS/PS2 controller that gave it their edge with consumers. So much for familiarity. Damn it, I want my controller to be comfortable and familiar in my hands.

I definitely like the controller for the PS2 much more than any other. I loathe the Gamecube's controller. Xbox's controller is counterintuitive for me because the analogue sticks aren't symetrical. In what games do you primarily use the directional pad in tandem with the right analogue? That setup makes no sense to me, other than they wanted to be different than PS2. The controller sucks.

Ah, hell there is no way to make a Joystick joke without ending up in the Dirty thread. However......

Even the nintendo controller was odd to me after getting used to a stiff 2600 joystick, and what the hell's all the buttons fer, in my day we had one red button and we were glad to have it.
