Yes! It’s the TheOtherDude thread.

I’m kind of surprised at the “welcome” this guy’s gotten. He doesn’t post J&SB quotes, he types well, and, in spite of being insulted, doesn’t respond in kind. His retorts have been measured and civil, whereas we’ve accused him of performing body cavity searches on himself.

If this isn’t the kind of person we want here, then I’m not sure what the standard is. Why all the hate, people?

I'm honored, a whole thread for me!!! yay!! Apparently that other guy, I forgot his name already, thinks I pissed in his personal punch bowl or something. I have no idea what I did to him. He's got anger issues. And stuff.
And it probably pissed him off even more that I didn't stoop to his level of name calling. Which in my experience online and offline, never accomplishes anything.

Who is the other guy The Other Dude is talking about?

slizzelizzel... a 19 year old college "man" know it all. Now I understand why he's pissed off, he doesn't understand most of my references, and it angers him that someone else has more knowledge than he does. It's not about me being a "post whore". He has a picture of John Lennon as his avatar. Except that John Lennon died 6 years before this guy was even born. I guess to me it's all a matter of knowledge and experience. I thought I knew it all at 19 too, but very quickly found out I didn't. I don't know it all now, and probably never will, but I find more constructive ways to take my anger on on people that I don't know and have no qualms with in the first place. But, again, that comes with experience. He'll learn, eventually. Or then again, maybe not.

While we're on the subject of... whatever it was that we were on the subject of, I can't seem to be able to edit my avatar. I only have a radio button that says I don't have one. I went to the FAQ's and they didn't help, so my guess is that at my lowly "junior cheeseball" status, I'm not allowed to have an avatar. Well, as someone once said, "patience, grasshopper". So I'll just have to wait. No big deal, it's not like I'm putting my own picture up for people to see.

You're the subject of this thread, so you really can't be off-topic here.

As far as your avatar goes, I got mine up (heh) in spite of myself, so I don't think I'll be able to help there. But maybe one of the smart people can help.

Why all the hate, people?

He's been a member for less than twelve hours and already has over fifty posts. Seems like he's looking for validation of some kind or trying to win some sort of popularity contest.
Replying to old posts. ie: to Dave in "I'm Drunk", Janice over in "The Village", and GameonIan. And it's not like he's adding some new nugget of information that had previously been overlooked- he's posting as if the conversations are still going on.
While he knows what a period is for, half his posts just sound like he's talking to hear himself talk. Do that anywhere else and you wind up on medication...
Maybe he has a goal of hitting a hundred posts on his first day. It's good to have goals, but I know it pisses me off having to muck through over fifty of his posts to find anything worth the time and bandwidth.

Quality over quantity.

I'm working on the quality, give me time. But I did read on one of the forums that you don't amount to shit on the message board until you've posted enough and have been here awhile. Obviously, I'm not going to get there in one day. Or a week, or a month. Or even a year. But I have to start somewhere. And I probably wouldn't have posted half as much as I did had I not been attacked. I'm just adding my 2 cents. Maybe it's only a penny's worth, but at least it's my penny.

Dude, whoever said that was either ribbin' someone or full of hot air, or some strange mixture of both. Some of the coolest people are the most mysterious--they pop their heads in once in a great while and then disappear, so don't worry about getting your post count up real fast.

It isn't a browser or OS-specific problem, as far as I can tell (I usually access the page on a Mac, with Safari). That said, I don't know what the actual problem is.

As, usual, try deleting preferences, caches and/or cookies for your browser, as a first step.

Add in flaming noob posts from two months ago (when he has just joined, mind you), and you have my thoughts exaclty. I even told him in like 4 or 5 posts just to chill and read the boards, get a feel for things before blabbing the first thing that came into his mind and there wouldnt be any problem, but anybody that was online this afternoon when he was on his posting bender would agree with me-- there was a new post every minute that made less sense than the previous one, and it was really, really annoying.
But I also did tell him that he was a much better noob than most are, and that if he just chilled for a few days and got a feel for the place that he'd make for a good member of the shoot.

I dunno, Boobey, if you're the right person to decide what makes a member and what doesn't. Let's just say you, yourself, have been spared a lot of headache and heartache because your pedigree. Most of us had to earn our place here and often times that meant surviving the gauntlet, which could be brutal, but because of who you are , you simply bypassed.

Humor , of course, is a subjective thing and in the old days we argued whether or not Family Guy was funny and eventually agreed to disagree. Some people still think Adam Sandler is funny, for those, I can only offer my pity. For you-- if you want-- I can offer a few examples where someone made a witty quip to one of your posts and surprise, surprise you didn't "get it". I think you've rushed to judgment here, lashing out at a style of humor you don't understand.

Dude has conducted himself well enough. Actually, I was amused at his responses, even ones to posts five ,or so, months old. I see fair amount potential in his modest, self-deprecating style. And If I were him you'd have been served your own ass a dozen or so times by now.

Let's go over what exactly constitutes a flame-able offense, shall we? To keep the list short and make things simple I've organized everything into three easy to recognize groups of Fucktards
1. Quoting ( or misquoting) J&SB's responses to a message board with a familiar name.
2. Chronic misspelling or lazy leet-like typing style.
3. Trolling, Spamming, Racism, Homophobia.

Dude is innocent, man.

This is bull, if you people have a problem with me, let me deal with it, don't spare me for my brothers sake. I've been sticking up for myself for a long time now, even when my brothers were at home it's not like they fought my battles for me, so I'm sick of people claiming that I didn't earn my right to be here.

Visit the archives. What happened was, at best, a light slap on the wrist compared to what Rb is capable of.

When you say something like...

Well hopefully we can agree to disagree on this one, I wasn't miffed or annoyed and I went through all his posts to see what it was he did that offended you so. I didn't see him stepping out of line. As far as responding to old topics I would rather newbs do that than start another thread on something we already have fifty threads about. Which is what the impatient fucktards do.

Ok, I think you missed the point. You have earned your right to be here. If you were anything less than a stand up person you would NOT be here now. However, you have NOT earned a "Regular" status here yet. Unfortunatly you have to stay here for longer than a month to get that status. Most of us waited about two or three months before we started getting involved in the "selection" process for board members. You have over stepped you bounds and you were put in your place by not one but two regulars. Now, with me its three.

All this you haven't earned the right to talk however you want to talk because you haven't been here for X amount of months shit, is a bunch of malarkey. There is no class or caste system here at the Shoot. Or at least, there shouldn't be. If someone is stupid we can all flame away at them regardless of how long they've been here or we've been here. If I came on to this board one day and made a post about Jay and Bob sucking cock or some other nonsense, YOU ALL HAVE THE RIGHT TO TEAR ME TO SHREDS. And hey, if a new person shows up here and posts in a cogent, thoughtful and respectful manner, what we should do is welcome that person with open arms. What we shouldn't do is treat them like their rushing some stupid fucking fraternity and have to earn the right to be on the same plane of existence as those of us who have been here forever.

I take a certain amount of pride in the fact that I've been here for so long. What I don't do is lord it over other people. Let's be better then that.

The Other Dude

So to sum up, without getting too emotional about it, I would have to say you guys like me, you really like me! Yay! (I think I'll stop that yay thing, it sounds a bit...odd) I was wondering, in a few months, or a year, can I get a crab cake instead of fish? I'm not too crazy about fish. Scary, but the only fish I can seem to tolerate is either McD's or Stoffers. And if you've ever eaten either, you'd know their resemblance to fish is fairly minimal. Basically, it's just breaded crap on a stick. Or a bun. But hey, it doesn't upset my stomach too much, so it's okay. Anyway, thanks again for your support. My job here is to shed light, and not to master.

Droogan_Leader
05-16-2005, 10:15 AM
Not too many people probably know this, but the McD's fish is cod, which is a pretty bland-tasting fish. I personally started eating cod more as a result of my stint at McD's back in the early 90s. That probably explains why it's easy on your stomach. Salmon, on the other hand, has a very "fishy" taste, and it doesn't always sit as well with me.

In re: to the question of whether you can have a crab cake, I'm for it.

In re: to all this hullabaloo about who's who at the Shoot, it's a free, open society. Even annoying newbs can stay on, and sometimes turn from their stupidity to become good contributors. You, Other Dude, I like, because you have taken minimal to no prompting.

As for slizzle, you've gotten in the middle of a lot of arguments, but that's your right. It isn't your right to act like you own the place by saying who does and doesn't belong, but you can still do it, as long as the regulars put up with it. I personally don't like it, but that's my two cents. Then again, I don't like anybody acting like someone smart and reasonably cooperative doesn't belong, and that happens from time to time.

That reminds me--I look back on the time when MW was new, and how we put him through it. I remember telling him something stupid like, "Hey Wingman, go get me some wings, wingboy," and so forth. By the time that same thread was ended, I was telling him that he could be my Wingman anytime. He and I disagree on stuff most certainly, but it doesn't preclude a mutual respect, which I think some people seriously need to pick up on 'round these parts. I think Matt1's and BAMS' statements also embody that sentiment.

And finally, if somebody didn't give jk his fish by now, someone seriously deserves to be thwomped.

Ummm... not that Ford. Ford Prefect.
Or "Ford" from Brave New World, Aldus Huxley's synonym for God.
(which actually was a swipe at old Henry Ford)

But I digress. Henry Ford didn't actually invent anything. He merely took present day technology (early 20th century) and applied it to making cars in an assembly line.

Here's the whole deal about Aldus Huxley, Ford and Brave New World, if you care enough to read about it.

That's not good enough. You accuse us of being inflammatory, trying to start stuff, and apologize in the same breath. If you're sorry, don't preface it with what you think we're doing wrong. If you're wrong, you're wrong--apologize and let that be self-sufficient. That kind of crap is what is making everyone upset. You can't be nice and insulting at the same time.

I'm shocked! You're not thinking creatively about this. I'm going to eat the crabcake and fart at my enemies. Wasn't that in Spaceballs? Or maybe it was Blazing Saddles. I know Mel Brooks had a big fart joke in there somewhere. But if I was going to wield a weapon, I doubt a fish would be very effective either. I would really like a mace, or a pointed stick, or at the very least, a holy hand grenade. You know there are lots of cute killer bunny rabbits in the woods nearby. I hear that an uzi makes a nice weapon, if you're not much of a marksman. But I'm partial to big rocks on a hill. But then my enemies have to stand below me in the valley and wait for the rock to fall on them. Which by most accounts, isn't that easy to do, even with a GPS device.

The reasons the fish is an effective weapon are:

a) it stinks and the stink will remain with the person;
2) it is wet and gross and will immediately aggravate said person;
iii) it is unlikely to be confiscated by security;
D) no one expects the spanish inquisi..sorry...a fish attack; and
V) it is more of a disoreinting attack than a hurtful one so it works when people are being dillholes.

Crab cakes can still be used as throwing stars when warm. They will just platter in a wider pattern. Plus they can be hot, so they have that going for them.

Well, there is a point to it all. I was going to use the name "The other Ones, or the other One, but that seemed a bit, shall we say, egotistical. Then I was thinking of the Big Lebowski, and combined the two in a truly unholy manner, and the rest is history.

Exactly! It is the last words of that section of the song. I must confess, I'm a deadhead. First off, the Dead only went by the name "The Other Ones" AFTER Jerry Garcia died, so to say that "they" changed their name for a while is inaccurate.

You are silly. I've always thought of "Rock" as emcompassing a vast variety of styles. I would consider "Jam Band" a sub-category of Rock.
The Greatful Dead and Phish may be musical omnivores, but ultimately everything they do is Rock and/or Roll. :D

No way- The Black Crowes ROCK. Guns and Roses ROCKED. AC/DC ROCKS. Hell, even KISS (although they, in fact, suck, and hard, too) I would categorize as ROCK.

Some of the Dead and Phish's songs ROCK, but they are generally more creative and musically playful than hard rock bands- that's where I think the distinction lies.

I wouldn't call a band like Green Day a Rock band- they're more of a punk band. But sometimes they do rock. Interesting....

Of course, there is probably a different categorization for every single band out there, so it may be something of a moot point.

Sorry, Tom. While jam bands may improvise, most are still vastly more rooted in the rock traditon, than the jazz tradition.

Unless, you are talking about some of the actual jazz bands that are currently attracting some of the young "jam band" audience, such as Medeski, Martin and Wood, or The Bad Plus.

Sorry, Jason. What are we apologizing for? I disagree with you, though. I think that rock is more concerned with energy, song craft and showmanship, with jazz being more cerebral and focused on the exploration of musical themes and ideas within the framework of a song.

And in that sense, the approach that the musicians take to the music performed, jam bands have much more of a jazz sensibility.

Yeah, ummm.. but Shakedown Street isn't a jam record. Either is In the Dark. Either is Workingman's Dead. And actually, none of those are similar to each other. I guess my point is, the Dead can be a jam band, but that's only one of their musical avenues. And if Abba can be considered Rock, then the Dead certainly fit in that category. And what of the Beatles? They did everything from classical to rock to whatever...but that's another story for another day.

I'm with those who would say punk is more a cultural idea than a musical sound. The Dead Kennedys (referenced conveniently in actualsize's avatar for later thread tie-in)
were punk, and so was Fear, and they actually sound more like rock bands than Green Day. I feel like the moment a "punk" band signs a usual contract with a major label -- large sum of money upfront like a loan in exchange for the promise of future albums....profit sharing, corporate advertising, etc. -- that's when they stop being punk. So could a punk band sell out a stadium? I still say it's possible, but they'd have to do it without the help of Clear Channel and corporate cigar smokers.

TOD too, I presume. It's just not there at all. They get a different menu with only one radio button that says "Do not use avatar".. There just isn't that whole "custom avatar" box. Not there. Ming and Ryall know - I think, and they have been looking into it. Thanks for the help, but that's not it.

Exactly my point. Which I is why I defer to the wisdom of the caretakers. If I could see that, I'd have changed it by now.

Yeah, I figured as much. Probably just some glitch in the crossover for gotherella, and some weird mixup when TOD signed up, I was just staying up all night, and seeing how I had nothing better to do, I thought I'd polish up on my Paint skills.

...they are still pretty shitty...

Your Current AvatarNo Avatar Specified Avatars are small graphics that are displayed under your username whenever you post.
Do not use an avatar
Note: if you have a custom avatar selecting this option will delete it.

And that's all there is...

And it looks so sad without the other stuff we're supposed to have. Somebody probably fed the gremlins after midnight and put them in water afterwards.

I watched it Friday afternoon at 12:10. That was definitely a good time to see it here as the theatre was only about three fifths of the way full.

Okay, I'm sure somebody here has seen this hallucinogenic wet dream by David Lynch. Can anybody explain to me what the hell the movie was about? I walked out of the theatre before the ending. I don't know that knowing the ending would explain it either. All I know was that it was depressing and very weird. And nothing seemed to connect or make a bit of sense. Of course I wasn't doing any drugs at the time, maybe it would have made more sense if I had been, or at least I wouldn't have cared so much?

Hey bud, I don't know if this is your first message board, or you just really, REALLY like that someone named a thread after you, but, customarily, new topics go in new threads. Or, go ahead and keep resurrecting this one, you narcissistic attention whore.;)

EDIT: Eraserhead is much better if you are on drugs, preferably hallucinogens.

Well, the film is pretty straightforward, storywise, so I'm not exactly sure where your confusion lays. (Although I can't imagine walking out early helped).
Some people consider it to be an allegory for the fears that all expectant parents go through, although, personally, I try not to read too much into it.
It's simply a beautiful film, and one I have long-adored.
That said, it's not for everyone. You hated it. That's okay. You aren't missing the secret decoder ring that makes the movie make sense. If you're a film buff, give it another try, in a few years. If you're not, then watch whatever tickles your fancy.

Oh, yeah. Your appreciation of the film will most likely not be helped by the use of drugs. Effexeye=Pusherman.

I realize that this is a little off subject and some of the veteran's of the poopshoot may consider that I need to start a new thread for this and if so please inform me, yet I believe that this is relative enough to post in this one:
Speaking of movies and drugs, I used to do a lot of drugs recreationally.... I was never addicted to anything and have yet to be but I haven't done any hard drugs in over a year and I just quit smoking pot about 3 weeks ago (I'm tryin' to get custody of my son) and a movie that convinced me to quit doing drugs (except pot) while I was on drugs was 'Requim for a Dream'.
