View Full Version : What's your favorite Star Wars Sound Effect?

Just got through watching Episode I again with the missus, and a few popped out in my mind:

-Artoo reconnecting the shield generator as the Queen first runs the Trade Federation blockade

-The sound the Droid Army's tank fire makes when it hits that goofy Gungan Shield

-The race-inspired engine on Anakin's podracer as he enters the tunnel during the 2nd (3rd?) lap of the podrace

-The sound of Darth Maul's ship the first time we see it

-and last, but certainly not least, who could forget the sound the Jawas make when Anakin speeds by?

Feel free to post your own aural goodness. Name which episode, if you could.

That's aural not oral for you sickos and your "Things That Sound Dirty" thread.

Oh, and for you, too, psychofiend, Mr. Too Much Information.

P.S. It's not the first time I've realized it, but didja ever notice that every lightsaber has its own sound? Darth Maul's is nasty.

* Lightsabers igniting
* The sound of Anakin's podracer
* The sound of the Jedi fighters (in Revenge)
* The silence in the greatest scene in Star Wars history... you will see :)

The seismic charge in Ep II
There's a very specific point in Empire, during Luke and Vader's duel where the lightsabers have an interresting rhythm
Tie Fighter fly-bys, both engines and blasters in Ep IV
The dying Ewok in Jedi (short furry little bastards... kill 'em all, I say)

The seismic charge in Ep II

That's a good one, I was going to mention it, but you beat me to it. It's one of those moments kind of like what I believe RB is describing- there's this silence that's totally deafening because the score, the dialogue, the sound effects- everything stops for an instant, and then....

BWONGGGG!
Tie Fighter fly-bys, both engines and blasters in Ep IV

Gotta agree with that one too- I looooooove love love the way T.I.E. fighters sound. They sound evil in the way Darth Maul's saber sounds evil.

Gotherella was saying about the Clone Wars cartoons that one of the most noticeable things is that they use the absence of sound as much as sound effects, themselves- the absence of any sound is as powerful as the sound itself- like "negative space" (pardon the pun).

I really dig the sound design of the Star Wars movies (duh, hence the thread)- watching the podrace scene again made me think of the N64 podracing game. It had a mode where you could use just the sticks and triggers, and play the game with 2 controllers at once. It was like driving a podracer- one of the best uses of an extra controller ever.

Wow, talk about a tangent...

Anyway, it was cool how the sound design for the video game used the exact same sound effects as the movie, and it really drew you into it - you BELIEVED you were podracing.

OK-

* Darth Vader's breathing . ( in the suit)

* Anakin killing all the sand people in Episode two

* Chewy answering "right" during Jedi ( when jabba asks if they wish to beg for there lives)

*(not really a sound effect but ) When Mace walks up to and ignites by Jango's head. The music is what kicks there.

* R2d2's scream! the wooooooooooooooooaw! hehehe:)

* The sound of the Ewokes praying

* Lightsabers igniting ( its been said but it still brings a smile to my face)

* Lightsabers clashing together in a duel

There are really so many things I love about the "Sounds of star wars" I couldn't go through them all.

Artoo makes a lot of cool noises in general- when he's disgusted with threepeeio, when he's scared on the way to Obi-Wan's in Episode 4-

Oh and speeder bikes, when they first get kick started. They sound cool too.

Samurai Jack was the best at that -- sheer genius.

I love the R2 scream, too -- my little one has been watching the Droids cartoons and they use the R2 scream a lot to great comedic effect.

Oh, and I dig the tie fighter flyby sound. Bitchin'.

OK, I'm going to have to re-watch everything now.
I looooooove love love the way T.I.E. fighters sound.
This is one of my favorites too. I was gonna post is, but I didn't know how to spell it - I've never seen it written anywhere.

So it is T.I.E.? Not Ty or Tye or T.Y.E. or Thai? Thai fighters - there's an image.
What is the acronym, if any? I should know this...

Yes, yes we did.

Favorite sound effects:

Chewie-pretty much any time he say's anything(it's an effect the prequels have been missing)
X-Wing lasers-awesome sound
Lightsaber ignition
Door opening sound-Pshh
The ticking sound that you hear in ep IV as the TAntive IV docks with the Star Destroyer
Vader Breathing (Duh)
And who can forget the famous Star Wars Scream? AAeieiiieiiiiiii!

Is it just me or is there a scream effect of somebody getting pushed or shot off of something and falling? And it seems like that exact noise is used in a bunch of movies aside from star wars. Anyway....

I love anything chewbacca says. The sound of lightsabers igniting is cool, and i also like the sound of the millenium falcon's engine, it sounds kinda powerful and junkie at the same time.

-and last, but certainly not least, who could forget the sound the Jawas make when Anakin speeds by? How about just before/after the Jawas paralyze R2 in IV? "Oooohhteeniiie!"
But I'm still more partial to the honking call of the Tusken raiders.

Chewbacca's sound effects are okay when used sparingly, otherwise they get downright annoying (i.e. during the scene in Empire where they are getting ready to freeze Han in carbonite.) I just wanted to reach into the screen and gag him or take a baseball bat to the back of his head just to shut him the hell up.

Vader's breathing is cool. (I don't see why we have to specify "in his suit" seeing as how there are no special effects for his breathing when he isn't in it as in Episode I and II)

The sounds the Ewoks made in Return of the Jedi when they died.

I also have to agree with the light sabre effects.

The Seismic charge. When the episode 2 dvd came out, I would crank up my sound system and skip to that scene. Really gives the speakers a work out.

All of the rushing traffic during the courscant chase is another great bit of sound work.

Other faves:

The crackling as light sabres are held together.
The sound of lightspeed
The spin-crash of the one TIE in the Asteroid field chase
That weird evil hissing/wind as Palpatine is destroyed

I didn't, learn something new everyday, I always thought they were called Tie fighters cause they were shaped (kinda) like bow-ties, you know, the same way they're called X-Wings cause their wings make X's (that's why they're called X-Wings right?).

Nothing much new to add, TIE Fighter engines, Artoo's scream, light sabers. I always dug the Millenium Falcons engine when it wouldn't turn over or kick into light speed. And in the beginning of RotJ, Luke vs the Jabba pet, when Luke kills that thing there's a whimper the monster make that always just about breaks my heart.

Oh, and another- the bass drop when the Death Stars' main gun powers up.

My two favorites. Or at least the two that I and my family have tried to replicate the most when making jokes are:

1) The high pitched whine as the Speeder-Bikes go by at high speed in RotJ.

This was the sound we'd make when riding our mountain bikes at dangerous speeds through the trees.

2) The sound made when Obi-Wan turns off the tractor beam in the death star during A New Hope.

Just a sound we always made when turning something off or pretending to turn something off.

Since most of my favorites have already been mentioned, I'll throw in the Jawa noises. Those always made me giggle as a child.

Ok, fine, still to this day. What can I say, I'm a man of simple pleasures.

Sorry to resurrect a dead thread, but did it bug anyone else that Anakin's Jedi Fighter made the same "turbo" noise as his podracer? It bugged me a little. A VERY little, but a little nonetheless.

slizzelizzel
05-26-2005, 06:44 PM
It probably did, but they reuse sounds all the time in SW.

The podracer was cobbled together from spare parts--it's very possible that the engines he used were predecessors to the ones used in later Jedi starfighters.

It's also possible that they used it to subliminally remind us of who Anakin used to be, and didn't think anyone would notice.

The Jedi fighters did not sound exactly like the pod racers, just slightly. Similar engine windup but not much more.

I love a new little sound moment in Revenge... in Palpatine's hallway, he has turned his back to Anakin (it is right before Palpatine asks "Are you going to kill me?"), and Skywalker just slightly moves the lightsaber in a subtle but threating way. In that instance we hear the classic lightsaber-in-motion buzz sound and it is one of the coolest sound moments for me.

I get a charge from that everytime.

SPOILER WARNING

The sound that Anakin's lightsaber (actually, I guess he's Darth Maul, at this point) makes when he unfurls it to kill the Younglings is brutal. Love it.

RB, I was referring specifically to the "turbo" sound. However, it's not something that I'm dying about- just wondering if maybe Annie built his own Starfighter, or if there is a backstory somewhere in the EU there.

I think it is because the kid is just so cute...

Well, Anakin does mess with things so it could be but I hear the same sound from Obi's fighter. In any event, when you see the making-of on the DVD you will see what I mean. They combined familiar sounds but there are a few engine sounds in the mix.

I am sure the turbo is part of that. Similar but not exactly the same (but comes from the same pool).

I like sounds in the movies that I never noticed in other installments. I refer to those staffs that the droids and Grievous were using in Revenge of the Sith. The sound of them and the Lightsabers hitting each other was the most memorable sound in the movie for me. A good contrast of sound. Ben Burtt is a genius, SW wouldn't sound the same without him.

MagnaGuard Electrostaff, made of cortosis- the same material as vibro-blades. First appeared in Republic Commando for X-Box and The Clone Wars on the Cartoon Network. From what I undertsand, the vibro-blade as used by Lando Calrissian in ROTJ possessed an electrified tip, not unlike a cattle prod.

While I do find your "Definately not?" remark to be misspelled (couldn't resist), it definitely doesn't seem tactless or rude to me in the least. There's nothing wrong with stating authoratively that something you know as a matter of fact to be true is true, or that something you know as matter of fact to be false is false. I wish people did it more often.

One prop guy calls them Gen. Grievous' bodyguards staffs
George Lucas calls it a staff with a beam of light traveling through the center of two ends.
He also refers to Lightsabers as Laser Swords.
So take that as you may. Hey, it's his creation he can call it whatever he wants.
