View Full Version : JFK, the faked moon landing and the REAL story behind this board
First off, if you're reading this - welcome to Movie Poop Shoot's new, improved and faster server. After almost 3 years of service we were running our of disk space on the old machine and it was becoming quite outdated.
With the machine upgrade I felt it was also time to upgrade the board software. The be brutally honest with you, I felt ubbthreads was slow and hard to manage admin-wise so with the machine switch it was a good time to update the board as well.
I wasn't sure if I could import the user data and posts between the two boards so I did it on Thursday to make sure it would work. Luckily it did, however with the domain name and IP address switch taking about 12-24 hours to fully go through we lost some posts. If there is something from the old board that was posted Thurs/Fri and not trasferred here, the old board is still accessible for now at http://161.58.187.114/forums/ if you hit a page does ot exist error substitute 161.58.187.114 for moviepoopshoot.com in the URL.
Although the change may be shocking to some of you, I fully feel this board is faster (the most important thing to me) and more feature laden than the old one. Feel free to poke around before declaring that 'it sucks!'
If you have gripes, feel free to itemize and post them here and I'll see what I can do. Some of the features of the old board are here - just in different place. For instance, hitting this little graphic:
http://moviepoopshoot.com/forums/images/buttons/firstnew.gif
will take you to the first unread post, just like the old school board.
I've decided to leave user titles user cusotmizable, so if you don't want to be a senior member - then don't. Change it in the user CP. Just don't try to pull 'Administrator' or 'Editor in Chief' or you'll be banned (which is also a lot easier to do here)
Otherwise I don't think the changes are THAT drastic. Plus I fully believe, that to an extent it's not the board software that makes a community but the people. As long as most of you don't change (and you stick around) it shouldn't be so drastic.
Plus there's a buddy list feature here that I haven't tried yet. Should be fun.

You mean people like D'Money and the others can be kicked outer quicker? Woohooo!! That is reason enough for me to accept the new board.
I have been trying a lot of the features that this new board has, and I really like them. I have even added a numerous people to my buddy list, but I still have researched what all can be done with that buddy list. I also like the ignore list. This will come in handy.

Ming, I checked it out, and I have to say the new board is pretty cool. Everything feels really fancy now, and a lot of the features we wanted are finally ours to enjoy.
One thing that I haven't figured out yet, which seems like a weakness in a way, is how can I tell who is responding to something I say, if they don't actually "quote" me? I imagine people will get used to just quoting someone and solving it that way, but I was wondering if there was another way like on the old board.
Thanks, man, and again, good job.

Yeah, RB, but it's not like that was part of the plan, like he knew some things would be lost. I think they wanted it to be a perfect transition-surprise kind of thing.

And telling you we were switching things would've helped that how? I said I felt bad we lost some stuff here, especially the stuff about Kathy's dad. We lost some at the site, too, work I'd already done. I made do, since it was a big changeover. Obviously losing bits was unintentional but unavoidable.
When View Askew changed formats, people had to re-sign up and start over. We preserved 99% of everything here and still you bust my balls. You're pretty impossible to please.

The only thing I would have done with a warning is print out all the PMs that had important info in them in case they were lost. I also don't think I would have freaked as bad when I logged in that first morning.
But Ryall, we are impossible to please and we will with time come to realize that this was a good thing. This is just the phase where the new baby brother/sister has been brought home from the hospital. We will throw temper tantrums and get pissy until we learn that we now have someone we can teach swear words to and torture on a regular basis and the simple fact that there is nothing we can do to change the situation.

I don't mean to get into this argument because I do understand that you feel bad that some stuff was lost and I don't want to make you feel worse, but I think that if I was told first that some things would be lost, I would've tried to save some info from my PM's to my computer. Some messages had important info that I didn't save anywhere else. I know it's my fault for not saving it, and I will get over it... I'm just trying to explain to you so you'll know how telling us would've helped a little bit.
Well, Georgie seems to be a more respectable size now, and i did nothing to it. So thank you whomever fixed it. And Chris, don't worry about prying into my stuff for something like that. I would only feel a little bit violated, in a, you know, good way. ;)

And I hear that--sorry you lost those, and to the rest of you, too. I knew a changeover was coming, but Ming does the heavy lifting on this stuff, whenever he's able to find time and also when I'm not updating the site itself. Which is tough since I work on it every day. So I get that even a warning with a vague date would've helped. I actually intended to put up something, but lately, my schedule has been so insane, I just haven't been around (obviously) or had time to even do that. Which is mostly why I reacted badly to Razorback and others just outright ripping the place this weekend. Like, I do everything I possibly can and at times the exhausting pace has my nerves frayed, so when I saw that, it made me think this is all just a thankless gig, you know? We certainly didn't set out to cost anyone any posts or PMs or anything.
Sorry you guys had to hear a bunch of negative input, I understand that you guys did what you had to do and what you thought was best, and in time I'm sure most of us will thank you and learn to appreciate your guys help. Though in the meantime...
Well, it's my first day to this new shoot and I'm still trying to adjust to all this brightness.
That, and the calendar made me realize:

OK, so i just noticed the "Posting Rules" in the bottom left hand corner of the screen. Evidently i'm not allowed to post Attachments. This is probably fine, since i have already posted an image and that's the only kind of attachment i ever posted. But i guess my question is, what other kinds of attachments could be posted. Evidently i'm not allowed to post Attachments.
This board does have an attachment feature where, much like your e-mail, you can upload an attachment for others to download. I've disabled it for now because we do have finite disk space. If you want to link a file, feel free to do so - hosted on your own server.

I don't think you get it. It may have not helped at all, not at all, but at least we would have known.
How long have you known about this "change over"?
A week or two or maybe only a couple of days?
If it was up to 24 hours before this happened you could have said something , Ming could have said something.
I come here everyday, I read your articles, I post about them, I help take down horrible newbies, and one of the reasons I do all of the above is because I felt like I was a part of this site. I protect it because I love it. So, for you and Ming to do all of this without even so much as a heads up is like a slap in the face. I know you are a busy man, and I know Ming is as well, but you mean to tell me one of the two of you could not find 5 mins to sit down, log in, and say "Hey guys, by the way, things are going to be a whole lot different around here."
You guys didn't and it pissed us off, and now your acting like we are being jerks by expressing our anger in being left out of the loop. Like who are we to be upset about that? I'll tell you who we are, we are members of this board. I have been one for 14 months, and a lot of the people here have been for as much as three years. I think our commitment entitles us to ( at the very least) a heads up on when your going to come in and gut the place ( even if it is to make it better). I think we deserve to be treated better than what we were. For the most part I let that go with just a few little comments, but then you come on here and lecture us about saying that it was wrong. WTF?
Well boss, if you do not think that our dedication to you and to this site get us at least a notification, then this is not the home I thought it was. I invest too much time into this site and into the people here for you to say that and get away with it, so I don't care what happens to me.
First off, we're here to do everything to keep you all happy here so for anyone to think we didn't warn anyone to piss people off is totally wrong. I'll admit that a post wasn't made because the heart and soul, not to mention the basic (and better in my opinion) format was preserved - the heart and soul being 99% of the posts and user data. Yeah - we lost at most a day and a half of posts and if any of those were that important I did provide a link so you could retrieve and repost them.
Secondly, this board is provided as a free public service as part of this site - a board which Chris and I have had to fight for as there were people higher up who disagreed with the fact that we needed it. Luckily Chris and I disagree with that disagreement. So you can see where we get a bit defensive when people dismiss this so called 'new' board after using it for a minute/hour/day.
Honestly I don't see a huge difference between the other board and this one. You login, post, quote, use signatures, reply, etc just like the other one. In addition it's faster and has a couple new features which I'm digging (buddy lists and the ignore feature). It's really no different.
So that leaves the missing PM's. I want to say that if they were so important, you would have saved them on a format that wasn't so volatile. But since we're nice guys here:
http://www.moviepoopshoot.com/forums_old/
This will stick around for a few days so you can retrieve your important PM's and posts. It will not be around forever so have at it now while you can.

No one is denying the hard work you do and that you guys do a lot for us. I will even go as far as to say that while I like the old board better this board is prolly going to be better because of the changes. I know I seem like and asshole, but I am not. I know I seem ungrateful , but I am not. I have thanked you and Chris a number of times for all that you guys do for us.
Now, once again, I am not mad about the missing stuff. I could careless about the PM's, or about the missing threads. I could care less. For me its principle. You guys new about this change and said nothing, and that kind of pisses me off. I feel betrayed, and I think so do a lot of other people. This was a big change to the way things were, yeah the concept is the same, but everything else is not. While you never intended to piss us off, the fact that you did not give us a heads up made me feel like you don't really care what we think. If that is true then why do I waste hours and hours of my day posting my opinion here. See what I mean. For the most part we were getting over it steaming a little bit , but letting things go and then;
"I swear, you try to fix things and make things better and faster and some people are immediately ready to jump on you about it. I love folks that just proclaim "the new boards suck!" without either giving us reasons or giving us a chance to work things out." - Chris Ryall
Now , that is what set me off. That and a few other comments Chris made as well. They came off like I said before, as though we had no right to be upset. " Who the hell do you guys think you are!" is the vibe I got.
It may be that it was not intended to come off as so but still it was hurtful and what not. All of which that could have been avoided by just writing us a little note.
" Hey Poop shooters,
As of April, 23rd 2005 Moviepoopshoot.com will be upgrading its forums. While it maybe shocking and a little confusing at first we think ultimately you will benefit from the changes we make. Once the new Board is operational we will explain the new features and all will be well."
That took me 10 seconds to type. Like I said before I was just upset that we were not given that simple warning. Instead of letting out little harping go, we get repremanded for being upset about it and that is why I got mad at Chris.
I know my comments seem harsh but that is the way I feel about it. I just didn't feel that we deserved the lashing we got for just letting out a little steam, at the fact that we were completely left out of the loop on this.

The reason I created the original thread was because the change was sprung on us. So if there were negative reactions then it has everything to do with that, not because we don't appreciate the effort that any of you have put into it.

"Betrayed" Into the melodrama much? I guess if you were eventually trying to get to me, you did. Seriously, you can read me saying I felt bad you lost some PMs or whatever in other threads. And now, here you can read me telling you to give me a break, man. Betrayed. Good lord. Seriously, that's a pretty rude thing to even say, to imply that we would do this as a malicious act or something. I have someone doing a piece on the Star Wars Celebration III next week--should I prepare you ahead of time about that? We also might do some fun little changes to the site itself around our three year anniversary--should I spread the word now?
This board is maybe the 80th thing out of 100 that Ming has to deal with each day. Yet he still gave up his weekend to get it done at a low traffic time, and have it all back working quickly. It was a big task, doing everything he did, so he didn't post about it here first. I've been pulling 80-hour weeks for a year to keep this site running smoothly on top of everything else, and I also didn't have time to post. You'll notice I haven't done much posting in months due to my schedule, so it's not like I just disappeared the day before we changed shit over. Betrayed. Please, think about what you're saying before you say something like that.
More to the point, Ming just posted a link to the old PMs, so you can all get them, and you STILL go on this long rant? If there's no other problem, what's the problem? Betrayal. God, please go look up the definition.
I don't want to be fighting with longtime people (or new people, for that matter) about this. So why am I? Why are so many longtime folks just turning on us like this?
the fact that you did not give us a heads up made me feel like you don't really care what we think. If that is true then why do I waste hours and hours of my day posting my opinion here.
Well, you do it because you like the people here. These boards, as Ming said, exist, they came back after they were taken down, because we care.
"I swear, you try to fix things and make things better and faster and some people are immediately ready to jump on you about it. I love folks that just proclaim "the new boards suck!" without either giving us reasons or giving us a chance to work things out." - Chris Ryall

When my words are in front of you like they are, why do you infer things from the words? The words are typed out so there shouldn't be any confusion over what I'm saying. I come in here and first thing I see is a "this new forum sucks!" from longtime posters here. And that shouldn't get my hackles up? You're all allowed to get defensive but I'm not? I don't see what was hurtful about what I said--some people jumped all over us, and it rubbed me wrong. That's it.
" Hey Poop shooters,

I don't know , man. I don't think it was too much to ask. I understand your busy, I do and I am sorry for coming down as hard on you as I did, but you posts rubbed me the wrong way. Difference is, this is not the same forum you were running a few days ago. Also, most of us, if not all of us who were initially upset about it, came right out and apologized for being so harsh. I know for a fact I said that I was not trying to be a jerk just that it was a bit of a shock, and none of the controls were the same. RB , the guy who started the thread, even came out and said he was starting to like the new forum. So, there we are liking our wounds and then here you come and jump on us about it.
As for your whole " I guess I don't get an opinion around here". Oh you know what now give me a break. Your opinion is "the" opinion around here. We treat you like god of the Poopshoot because you are god of the poopshoot, its your place. We defend it and we defend the rules you made. So of course you have a right to express your opinion, but does that mean I can't be offended by it. I mean we do not deserve to know when your going to make major changes to this place.
Like I said before Chris, no one is saying you and Ming don't do a lot for us. No one. As a matter of fact you've spoiled us rotten and now were acting like it. You know we appreciate everything you do for us, You know it. So it is not a question of gratitude. We know you work hard, its why we don't bother you or Ming( at least I don't ) most of the time. I should not have taken it so personal but I did. I mean it was really upsetting to come in here and be lost. It took me ten minutes just to figure out that it was not My computer going ape shit. then another 30 mins to find any of the posts. Yeah, I was mad. It was also upsetting to see that you did not see why we were mad. Whatever, past is past, water under bridge .

RB , the guy who started the thread, even came out and said he was starting to like the new forum.
Yep... but it doesn't matter, I am a jerk so if I say something positive it is ignored. Anyway, it is probably around that time when we can remove or lock the threads about this since we are just not going to find a way to agree to disagree.
Ming has given us the ability to get our stuff back and that is cool. I would love to be able to move on from this and just be hated for something more important. ;)

Oh RB, you should know by now that most people don't need an important reason to hate you. They just do.;)
(See this is why I miss the features of the old site, I can't figure out how to do a multi-quote reply and I can't even find the smilies.)
Dude, just read through the new threads about the new format and there are plenty of posts (that aren't complaining) which give help on most of the new features. Hell, most of mine after my initial complaining have helpful hints in them. I even started a thread about the vB Codes you can use to quote people, change fonts, etc.

Chris man, sorry that you and Ming are being shit upon. Furniture rearranged, no big deal. I'm happy...and that is what is important. Next time them haters get you down, just think, "Lowenstein, Lowenste..." Wait, that's not right, think, "JJ is happy," and the world shall be your oyster. Thanks for all that you and Ming do for us to have a happy and clean home.

I believe the tense you are looking for is shat upon. Because of your incorrect use of grammar, your posts are rendered obsolete.

Hey Ming, Wingman is not able to post for some reason. He's beginning to feel banned. Can you fix it please? I feel like Butters talking to Cartman in the most recent episode of South Park.
Is he allowed back yet? I haven't seen him post in a while.

I was hoping someone would get that , good to know I can count on you, D. I guess my sense of humor survived.
Now I can't get an avatar ( no matter the size) to upload, I've lost over 200 post, and I have this strange itching under my - oh that doesn't have anything to do with the forum. Anyway, I feel like the Oracle in the last Matrix movie. Like I've changed and people wont recognize me.
My only real complaints ( aside from not being able to post for a week) is that I really miss the index button. Whenever I scrolled to bottom of a page I could always return to the index with that button now you have to use the back button and the index is unrefreshed when you return. I also miss the info that used to be at the top of posts telling you the IP and who the person is responding to etc.
It'd be great if we could get those functions back.

It's funny, Wingman, because your avatar shows on the page that lists forum members.
I lost a bunch of posts, too, like, enough to make my ranking 3 or 4 people higher. Nothing we can do about that one.
The itching- you're on your own, pal.
Use the forum jump control instead of the index button- it does about the same thing.
As far as being able to tell who is responding to what post, the only way to do it right now is to quote the person you are responding to.
Give it a while, it is really a good forum- lots of cool stats, the calendar is cool, and the IM functions are cool too.
Good to see ya! Now, reduce the size of that massive avatar to 200 by 200 (or is it 100 by 100) pixels and you'll be all set!

Woot Wingman, there's your avatar! What did ya have to do?
EDIT: Whoops- spoke too soon. Now there are two Mighty Wingmans on the member list screen, one with the Mondo avatar, and one with the right-sized one. Weird!

I've been e-mailing back and forth with Ming for the past couple days. He must've fixed it , because I couldn't even access it.
Thanks Ming. I'm really sorry I called you "The Merciless Dynasty". You rule dude! I bow humbly in awe of your extraordinary magnitude.
Thank you , REALLY.
Just one more question , I can't seem to find the part where I can change my title in my profile options , where is that?

It is the 2nd option in the "Edit Profile" link in the User Control Panel.

Maybe my interface is different from yours or maybe I'm just retarded but I'm not seeing that option. The layout changed from the cut-n-paste, none of these things takes me to "custom user titles".
