I just got back from watching the President Speak. It was great!! I highly recommend it. I mean its really something being within 100 ft of the most powerful man in world. Even if you don't like him, once you get around him there is something very engaging about the man. Then something amazing happened, that 100ft became about 8 inchs as I realized he was standing right in front of me. ( I was standing in route to his limousine) I only had about thirty seconds of a conversation with him but let me just tell you, it was something. He held his hand(as he was walking to his motorcade) out to me and I took it, he looked me in the eye and said:
Bush: " How are you , young man?".
I said " I'll be a whole lot better if you get this passed(referring to SS reform), Mr. President."
Bush: ( laughing) " I hope we do , son. Are you going to college here, son"

I replayed" No sir, I am still trying to make enough money to go"

Bush: " Ahhh, Well, Don't lose sight of your goals, I tell my daughters all the time that if nothing else a good education will at least give you the tools needed to get through life."
Me: "Yes sir, Mr President. My father and you would get along fine."
(Places hand on my shoulder)
Bush: " (Laughing) Well , Fathers know best, young man. You'll see one day. Listen I have to go now, son, but I want you to know I thank you for you support and good luck with school and most of all with life."

Me- " Thank you, Mr. President."
Bush: Thank you...Whats your name young man?

Me- "Brian Stanford , sir."

Bush:" Brian, Thank you Brian."
shakes my hand.
And he moved down the line and into his Limousine.

He looks you in the eye when he speaks to you and he does not talk at you, he talks to you. I still have chills. I was just standing there waving at the President (in awe) and then, he one ups it and walks over to me, and speaks to me. I was not the only person he spoke to but it felt like it. As I said before, He could have easily just walked right on or a wave would do. There was no press in there back hall so I know it was not a publicity stunt. I'm telling you , I don't care if you hate Bush or not. If you ever get a chance to see that man speak I highly suggest you do it.

My friend Sarah was standing next to me , she voted for Kerry. She didn't really want to come, but I asked her to and she figured how often in your life do you get to see the President. He shook her hand as well, and also patted her on the head and told her to be safe getting home. I didn't even notice because of the cloud I was on.
We both drove home in silence I look over at her and she is smiling big. I stop at her car( We left it at a gas station) she leans over and kisses me on the cheek and says Thank you. I jokingly made a comment about her switching parties over a handshake with Bush. She said "No, but lets just say that he is nothing like what I thought he was. There was nothing smug about that man."

It was a fun day. I am still on a high that will prolly not go down until the end of the year.

Anyway, I hope all of you take advantage and go see the man speak, even if you don't like him. He's going across the country over the next few weeks so I'm sure he will be near everyone at some point.

That's cool Bams, thanks for sharing.
It's good to know that the President isn't as bad a person as the press sometimes makes him out to be. It's also good to hear it first hand from a fellow friend who's actually gotten to speak with him. /forums/images/icons/smile.gif

Very, very cool. It sounds like you did a good job keeping your own with him too. I'm probably selling myself short, but I think I would have just clammed up, and I'm not even a fan of the guy. Good job der, buddy.

Oh! How could I have not taken the opportunity to make the first "30 Seconds with Bush? Sounds like a premature inaguration" joke?!

Damn. I was hoping that this was some type of porn. 30 seconds is all I need.

Sounds neat.

Thanks all!! I really was very nervous!! He started walking to me and I froze up completely. I think its why he talked to me because I look sick to my stomach. Lol!!. But like I said he dose not allow you to freeze for to long because he really is friendly. He grabs you and you know that he is concentrating only on you. Anyway, I wanted to share because he will be all over the US having his "Social Security Conversations". So go when he come near you.

I've always said that Bush would be a great guy to have at a barbecue, or to have a beer with (ignoring that whole finding Jesus thing). He seems like a perfectly likeable guy (from what I've read, he and Clinton have been getting along really well lately) I just don't think that he has my best interests in mind when it comes to policy decisions(awfully selfish of me, I guess). I would like to meet him, but I'm guessing that my big mouth wouldn't allow the meeting to last for very long.

I don't think that's selfish at all. I think that you can like someone, think they are a good person, without agreeing with their politics. Hell, i think we spend too much energy tring to villify people with whom we dissagree.

Bush was in Montgomery yesterday, so i missed my chance to see him, but if he comes back thru town, i'll put it on the agenda.

I just meant that me being concerned about his policies being in my best interests might be a little bit selfish. It seems that the correct way to look at policies is whether or not they are in the best interest of we the people, not just I the JJ.

Bah. I've never forgiven him for nicknaming me "Stinky". (Admittedly, I had just been swimming in raw sewage, but it still stung.)

Very cool. Despite who it is, it's always nice to have a dialog with a President.
