I realize I may be the only person here who admits to watching it and no, I don't know what is wrong with me or what traumatic event in my past lead me to watch it.

Still, if you have early thoughts let's hear them. Constantine is a pretty boy with no talent but he and the other rocker have good chances I think.

The real reason for my post is the prevalence of Lionel Richie songs being performed. Where's the relevance? How many current popstars are getting radio play with songs that sound like Lionel Richie?

What the show needs is a song writing contest that runs concurrently just like Project Greenlight has its writer and director separately and Project Runway <shudder> has both designer and model contests. Wouldn't more people be able to take the show seriously if there was actual new music coming out of it? Without that it remains a glorified karaoke contest. Yet, I still watch it.

Good ideas.

With two boys, it is hard to find time to watch it. Usually have it on in the background while playing basketball or reading a book to them.

I had a similar discussion last night. I don't watch the show as much as I observe it every now and then, but we all got to thinking that they really need an American Idol with a singer/songwriter approach or some other talent coupled with singing (instrument playing and dancing come to mind). Idol really isn't having a problem with ratings, but the winners of the contest are quickly becoming America's losers. Besides the first winner, none of the other Idols have really had much success beyond their 15 minutes. The show doesn't need to just find a winner, but make a star.

Two words for you pal... Clay Aiken

Does Aiken actually make any money right now or have a hit? I honestly don't know. The only time I hear pop music is when its on at work, and I'm pretty sure I remember hearing Clarkson's name being thrown around for some new single. I don't ever think I've heard Clay on the radio at work (and the damn station plays the same 5 songs every hour). Otherwise I avoid pop music like the plague.

I hear Kelly Clarkson every single day because she did a song for the Princess Diaries 2 so it's on our hold music.

<font color="purple">Clarkson and Aiken are the biggest stars out of American Idol. Aiken's Christmas Album sold millions and Clarkson recently had two songs in the Top 10.

I actually like Kelly Clarkson.</font color>

I like her song on the "Love Actually" soundtrack.

Well, two of the three best known names to come from Idol aren't winners. Clarkson, Aiken and William Hung. Nobody bought Rueben or Fantasia's albums because the songs weren't good. They have good voices that aren't being put to good use.

I don't really think that's correct in regards to Rueben. I think his album was more Soul than Pop so it didn't get the airplay of Clay's and Kelly's more standard pop albums.

I watched the second and third seasons religiously (i.e. while praying). For some reason, I just haven't gotten into it this year. I think I'm breaking up with American Idol. /forums/images/icons/frown.gif

You're right, Rueben's album was soul music. And let's face it, soul hasn't really been topping the charts lately. I hope this year's winner puts out a polka album. Or opera.

I listened to his CD once (because some girly wanted to hear it) and I loved it. It isn't pop at all. The kid has a great voice.

As for this season... I cannot stand any of the female singers. They are mostly bad. Out of the men I like one. That one rocker dude (not the girly looking one) is great. The rest of the guys are bad to ok. I have not watched all the singers perform (since I cannot bring myself to watch the whole thing) so my opinion is not based on having seen everyone perform.
