So the creator released that one of the current main characters is going to die by the end of the season. Place your bets and give your reasons.

My money is on Boone. We know why he was in Australia. We know his big secret and he's resolved it. He seems the most likely candidate.

Same choice, same reason.

Jack isn't going to make it. He was set up as the initial leader, but now Hurley has a grasp on operation, Sawyer knows who's who better than anyone suspects, Locke has the survival know-how, Sun has medicinal knowledge, so Jack serves little purpose. Of course, picking the most likely character is probably the wrong way to think with a show like this. They probably drew a name out of a hat.

I honestly haven't the slightest clue. Which is why I love the show.

Sorry, didn't think it needed a spoiler alert. Every newscast and article in the papers have been proclaiming that this will happen by the end of the season. I didn't think it was a real secret.

No biggie. I've been purposefully avoiding any articles or newscasts about the show. That's probably the only reason I didn't know.
I really loved the "World's Worst Copier Demonstration" this week. I was a little sad to see Ethan go. He made a great villain.

The news was impossible to ignore here. They were running the tease for the news saying someone was going to die during the show. Every commerical break it ran.

Originally I voted for Locke because he knows too much. Now that I think about it, it almost has to be one of the Korean/Japanese couple because otherwise neither of them really has a chance of being a bigger part of the show. And how long can they be immersed in the langage and pretend neither of them speak any of it?
Ah, but that is where some future conflict will come in. I think they are safe. For now, anyway. You guys may be right about Boone. But are you sure that the teaser you saw (Warning Slight Spoiler) wasn't just for Scott/Steve in this last weeks episode?

Nope. They were interview the cast and JJ himself said that it's unrealistic to have all 15 main characters live.

Well I've watched 14 episodes now (8 of those in the past 2 days!) and I'm completely hooked! So is the kid making those polar bears appear or what? Is Claire preggers with Satan?
As to who's going to die... my vote is with Sun's hubbie, purely coz I don't like him.

So did anyone else notice that Hurley was on the TV when Sun went to the guys house the first time? The little girl was watching it. It was a quick shot of him waving and getting into a car. So what does that mean?
I think we'll probably find out next week as it's Hurleys show, i think.

Yeah, I had to pause and watch it again to make sure it was him. I love how they put that kind of stuff in. Just one of the reasons Lost is one of the best shows on right now.
Well, did everyone watch Lost last night? I hope none of you people are going to use Hurleys numbers on the lotto (but i'll be a bunch of people do!) So Hurley owns a box company, huh. Didn't Locke work at a box company?

How did Locke know Claire's birthday?
Why do they call him Hurley?
Was he institutionalized or an employee?
Is that why he reacted to Charlie calling him crazy?
Why was he on the news in Hong Kong a week before the flight?
i don't know, was it because of the shoe company he is invested in?

What recurring themes are we all sensing?
So far, I think the obvious ones are: "This/that happened for a reason," and "Don't tell me what I can't do." These are most strongly tied to Locke, but they have come from others too. Jack even yelled "Don't tell me what I can't do" in the last episode.
The cud of the episode before last for me was that Locke and Boone found the airplane "for a reason" and it led to Boone's death. I can't help but think the whole thing with Locke and his legs and "the island trying to take it back" may have been for a reason too. How does that relate to Mousetrap? If all the things are set up perfectly, you catch the mouse, right? Locke's legs stopped working so Boone had to go to the plane, and alone. Then Lockes legs were working again when he had to run Boone back to the beach and get him to Jack who, in turn, had his lesson to learn in letting Boone go. Can't help but feel that's orchestrated.
I have a feeling we're going to learn something big about Locke when he gets shot. Also curious about what he was "enlightened" with (pardon the pun) by the hatch.
Dunno. What say you?
I say you are probably correct.

Not to mention what he saw when the "monster" was staring him down. Which, you might also note, hasn't been heard from since that episode. I don't count Boone's island hallucination, since I figure it was all in his mind. Or was it?
Let's just do a list of Lost mysteries yet to be resolved:
The numbers
The Black Rock
The cave corpses
The black and white stones found on the cave corpses
The hatch
Ethan and his possible people
Walt and his possible abilities
The "monster"
The "sickness" Rousseau talked about
The Polar Bear
How the survivors survived the crash in such good shape
Why no one can find them
The significance of Claire's baby
Am I missing anything?

The woman who insists her husband is alive, is he?
Did the people Boone talk to on the radio hear them?
Why did Locke's legs work/not work?
Why was Sawyier arrested and how did he get released?
What happened to Jack's wife?
Who did Kate kill?
We actually haven't seen Shannon or Walt's backstory from their perspective.

Matt1

Claire had a backstory. Remember, her boyfriend left her, the psychic advised her to board the plane, etc.? It was the one where she and Charlie were kidnapped by Ethan.
As for who hasn't gotten a backstory yet, Shannon and Walt are the only two prominent characters who come to mind. Walt's was kind of mixed in with Michael's episode, but he's yet to have one that's really his own. Same with Shannon.

****************SPOILERS ABOUND******************************
Still "Lost"
By Laura Miller
May 26, 2005 | "Lost" is made for TiVo the way some series ("24," "Alias," that masterpiece "The Wire") seem made for DVDs. Last night's season finale demanded full deployment of such little-used features as slo-mo (Exactly what is that thing dragging Locke through the underbrush? You got me) and frame-by-frame (Is there something funky about that smoke? Yep), not to mention that faithful stand-by, the instant replay button (Wait -- did the creepy jungle bird actually screech "Hurley!" as it flew away? Yes!). We'd be lost ourselves, without it.
We have answers, and yet no answers, or at least not the ones we thought we were promised in assorted tantalizing pronouncements tossed to the press by the show's creators, J.J. Abrams and Damon Lindelhoff. The group of friends I watch "Lost" with declared that all we wanted from the finale was 1) to see the Others, the shadowy, menacing people who share the island with our castaways and 2) some kind of payoff on Hurley's numbers, the sequence of digits (4 8 15 16 23 42) that netted him a massive lottery and apparently placed him under a curse.
Well, we got an eyeful of some scraggly-looking Others (and here, if you have somehow managed to become interested in "Lost" without realizing that it is a mystery, and therefore likely to be spoiled if you read anything at all about an episode before seeing it, you might want to stop), but no further insight into what they're up to, unless it's possible to run a crystal meth lab off a small fishing boat. We got a long, goofy and seemingly extraneous sequence about Hurley's frantic race through the airport to catch the fateful flight. An immediate second viewing reveals a liberal sprinkling of those ominous numbers -- it's 14 degrees out!; he's driving 42 kilometers per hour!; boarding at Gate 23; $1,600 for the old dude's scooter!; look at the numbers on that girls soccer team's jerseys! Surely, Messrs. Abrams and Lindelhoff, you jest.
Hurley even glimpsed the numbers on the hatch just before Jack and Locke blew it open, but what could he do, even if he'd had more time? "The numbers are bad!" he shouted as he tried to stamp out the fuse, a statement that no "Lost" viewer would question, but that none of his comrades -- not even the increasingly spooky Locke -- is ever likely to believe. Hurley is the show's most endearing character, the most grounded, the least addled by murky personal preoccupations and regrets, so it makes sense that he's got the freakiest secret to keep. As for the hatch itself: Well, it leads to a very deep, very dark shaft. Thanks.
Then there's the "monster." Is it invisible, or what? Why, as Karen Carpenter might ask, do trees shoot into the sky every time it stomps by? Is it up (where Locke stares when menaced by it) or is it down (where it, or something like it, tried to drag him)? Though the finale seemed to add precious little to the French woman's definition of the thing -- "it's a security system" - once you stop studying the scenes for visual clues and really listen, the grinding of chains and gears is unmistakable. My bet: It's a mechanical apparatus located in the honeycomb of tunnels underneath the island's surface. What that bizarrely sentient-seeming smoke is all about is another matter.
All in all, not much in the way of information pay-offs got dished out last night, but while we were slavering for solid facts, the groundwork has been laid for developments that will make "Lost" something more than just one long tease. A schism is brewing between Locke and Jack, not just over who's in charge, but over who best understands what's going on. Locke thinks it's something mystical -- an irony, as one of my "Lost" group points out, given he's named after the empirical philosopher -- and Jack, well, he's the man of science, according to Locke, though "sanctimony" fits, too.
Which prompts a question: Who's our hero? The blandly handsome and wholesome Jack is the obvious choice, but he's become increasingly unappealing, even to his fellow castaways. "Everyone wants me to be a leader until I make a decision they don't like," he pouts to Kate. That's not the problem, pal. Lately, you've shown the despot's tendency to confuse injuries to your pride with injuries to the community: Boone's death and Locke's secretiveness have irked you in ways you want to think are noble, but even the adoring Kate realizes are not.
Locke, on the other hand, is a zealot in the making, a man so disenchanted with his own ego he's all too ready to swap it for a higher power, even if it may turn out to be nothing more that a giant subterranean game of Mousetrap. Kate is too busy feeling sorry for herself, Sawyer is smart but infantile, and Sayid -- well, some of us would follow him anywhere, but he doesn't seem interested in taking charge.
It's all bait and switch: We sign up for monsters and metaphysical puzzles, but if we stay, it'll be for "Lord of the Flies"-style psychodrama, and interpersonal moments as tender as a box of Krispy Kreme donuts. What are we meant to think about those wordless flashbacks showing the characters boarding the plane, those almost unbearably stately interludes of Nothing Happening during the final 20 minutes when we're jonesing for cold, hard answers even worse than Charlie used to jones for those little brown balls of dope?
Once you realize what you won't be getting, those scenes are even more mystifying: The soon-to-be-smithereened Arnst (who introduced a nice bit of meta commentary into the finale when he complained about being shut out of "your merry little band of adventurers") helping Claire stow her luggage. Jack smiling politely to Locke. Hurley giving Walt (Walt!) the thumbs up before revealing that he is the source of the Spanish comic book. Once upon a time, a month ago, these people were strangers, the scenes seem to be telling us -- and they were nicer to each other then.
It would be weird, but appropriate if "Lost" turned out to be like "Deadwood," a story about the mystery of how people manage to live together given how maddening people can be. (The French woman, named after yet another famous philosopher, stands for the alternative, and look what it's done for her.) The finale's chief plot twist -- that the Others only thought they wanted Claire's baby, which explains why they tossed her back to Charlie after a few days -- made less of an impact than the trauma that resulted from it. Seeing Walt kidnapped from the deck of the S.S. Deathtrap while Michael, once so eager to give him away, looked helplessly on, was a heart-breaker. As dismal as that damn raft looked, it turns out there are worse things.
fantastic article Fanny. I didn't notice the bird but i did hear the ratching sound made while Locke was being dragged by the "monster". They didn't mention the interesting little bit with Charley and the stuffed Virgin Mary, i sure do hope that he stays clean so he can help raise Aaron. (what does Aaron mean anyway?)

My friend works for JJ. He had an overall arch of things that need to happen over the seven years and then he let's the writers write the backstories to get those characters to where they need to be. So it's a combo of Buffy and Babylon 5 tactic.

POSSIBLE SPOILERS FOR THOSE WHO HAVEN'T SEEN THE FINALE
The numbers - Not explained, but they were all over the place.
The Black Rock - Explained. It's a ship. A slave-ship. Full of skeletons. Add that to the ominous shit column. How did the ship get there?
The cave corpses - Not explained.
The black and white stones found on the cave corpses - Not explained.
The hatch - Sorta explained. It's a ladder. Where does the ladder go?
Ethan and his possible people - Maybe sorta explained. If the Others are indeed Ethan's people, we saw some of them on that boat. If those actually were the Others. Which I am inclined to believe.
Walt and his possible abilities - Not explained, but the Others wanted him for a reason.
The "monster" - Sorta explained. It's a security system. A security system whose presence is preceded by a fast moving wisp of black smoke and that makes all kind of mechanical sounding noises. And it goes underground.
The "sickness" Rousseau talked about - Not explained.
The Polar Bear - Not explained.
How the survivors survived the crash in such good shape - Not explained.
Why no one can find them - Not explained.
The significance of Claire's baby - Not explained.
The woman who insists her husband is alive, is he? - Not explained.
Did the people Boone talked to on the radio hear them? - Not explained.
Why did Locke's legs work/not work? - Not explained.
Why was Sawyier arrested and how did he get released? - Head-butted the Minister of Agriculture or something. Deported rather then incarcerated.
What happened to Jack's wife? - Don't know, but we know she wasn't his wife anymore when he got on the plane.
Who did Kate kill? - Her original crime remains unknown. But we do know the origin of her toy plane.

I think they didn't eat the bear meat because at that point they all thought they were going to be rescued imminently. Plus, they were on a mission with no real time to haul it all back.

So I slow-moed the part when Locke was attacked by the "monster". As best as I could make out, he was being dragged by a tendril made of what appeard to be... black smoke.
What the hell is it!?
Also, smart fella that I am, I just realized that John and Jack have essentially the same name. Two sides of the same coin, perhaps? Since duality seems to be a recurring theme on the show, I'm leaning towards yes.

Here's something to think about. Sun thinks that they are all being punished but I'm thinking maybe it's the opposite. Did any of them really have anything to go home to? Jail, empty houses, unresolved problems, drug addictions the list goes on. The only main characters who had something good waiting at the end of the flight are Hurley, Boone and maybe Shannon (although Shannon is a lot less shallow and has found someone to love on the island and Boone seemed to find absolution before he died).
I think most of them have benefited substantially from the crash.

One of the things I thought was key that the Down in the Hole link kindly provided by Sir Jason Brown didn't touch upon was: When Jack was running the stairs in the stadium, twisted his ankle and met Desmond, the Irishman responded to Jack's "I couldn't fix her," with "But what if you did?" Then Jack said he was talking about miracles, and Desmond gave him some unrequested advice to "Lift it up." When Jack's cinicism surfaced, Desmond said "Lift it up -- you're ankle. You need to keep it elevated." Then, after Jack told Sarah that the surgery was a failure and she would be paralized for life....and she said "Then why can I wiggle my toes?" Booyah. Touchdown. Jack made miracles happen.
To me, he came across like an angel or some ghostly incarnate of a saint. Then, to see that he's now the one manning the battle station under the hatch has me all......confusefuckbobulated.

Spoilertown for aired episodes now, I suppose.
The guy at the beginning of the episode was very clean, showered, yada yada. He grabbed a rifle. He also awoke from a bunk bed.
Desmond was dirty. Had a hand gun. The hatch had been left open and unattended for a bit. Methinks Desmond is another castaway from the other half of the plane.

Wow, that's a good possibility. He might not actually be the person we were led to assume. Great, now I gotta go watch it again.
**Edit [also SPOILERRIFFIC]: I went back and watched the intro and they do show him picking up the handgun that we see at the end of the episode. I'm pretty sure it's Desmond at the beginning because they show his cheeks when he's looking through the telescope and his right cheek is pockmarked. You can see the same pockmarks on Desmond's face in the stadium.

OK, so who watched last nights episode, it was good, but we really didn't get any farther along in the plot...
The previews for next weeks show were awesome though, I'm of the opinion that the survivors of the tale section have "devolved" into some sort of brutal tribe, and that's who is chasing Jin and put Michelle Rodrigez into the hole....
jjcourtright
09-30-2005, 03:12 PM
There was a little bit about that in the new RollingStone. One of the writers "hypothetically" said that the survivors that we know were in a large enough group that they formed a hippie-like commune. The other survivors were in a much smaller group, so a more militaristic style was needed.

Bernard (who will forever be Principal Dewitt from Growing Pains) has been established as Rose's husband as he asks them if his wife is still alive at the end of an episode a few weeks ago.
The evil writers did a whole article in TV Guide a few weeks before the season finalle going on and on about how Arnst would be a huge character in the second season and then they blew him up. Evil people with their intentional misinformation. Bastages.

Dude, I don't even want to know which one of your places is on fire or why the whispers come out backwards. But I digress.
JJ's right. We don't really know that "Sticks" is dead. I mean, I'm almost certain of it, but they didn't actually show her die in the episode. We're just left to assume, and those of us who were privy to all the new shit (thanks bloggers and Hercules!) knew she was going to be the survivor to......not survive. Right now, she's no more dead than Sawyer, which has me concerned considering what the writers let "slip" before.

The kid they wanted was on the boat. And probably too far away to see it.
I'm not sure what the black smoke means, or what they're burning to get it, I think maybe the others are decendants of the crew of the Black Rock.
Perhaps I'm connecting dots that aren't there, but that's one of my sneaking suspicions.
I also believe that Locke is right, the island brought them there for a reason, but I don't think that reason is to push a button every 108 minutes.

Well, my Star Trek watching tendencies makes me think they want them because they can't have children anymore because the magnetics of the island have destroyed their reproductive organs from long term exposure. At least that's what happened on ST:NG when aliens took a bunch of kids.
I had the same thought about the kids as well. It's either that, or they like human Veil, it's the sweetest meat.
What's up with the "monster" from Season one? the clanking noise and and the ghostly black smoke? we haven't seen anything about that this whole season.

I don't think so, both kids are something special. Walts "abilities" and Aarons destiny are part of the reason why the island brought them.

Really, Walt's creepy visage is the only "supernatural" thing we've seen this season, unless you count the shark with the symbol on it.
When you talk about the ghostly black smoke, you mean the stuff Jack and Kate saw in the "dark" woods on thier way from the Black Rock to the hatch, right? Seriously, how are they going to end season 1 with some weird, flying smoke bugs, the "security system," and the hatch....and then not even mention 2 out of the 3 things again for 6 episodes of the second season. I'm hoping we get some new insights and links tonight.
Yeah, it's like they blew open the hatch and forgot about all that other stuff.

I think the key is how little actual time has passed for the islanders since season 2 began. something like 3 days maybe? I feel like the whole season is only going to be a week in the lives of the castaways. There's just sooo much information to be delivered along with flashbacks in only a 46 minute episode.
Side note: Mr. Echo is my new favorite character and I already hate Michelle Rodriguez' character more than anyone else on the show, even more than Michael (although I like Rodriguez as an actor).

I think Anna Lucia is misunderstood. Near the end of season one she was flirting with Jack in the airport bar. She's civilized, when in civilization. I think she's just freaked out by what happened to her and the rest of the tail section. I won't be missing Shan much, but it looks like Sayid will.
I think the lesson of tonights episode is : Don't sit in the back.

It was all flash backs, of the 48 days between the crash and the time Anna shoots Shan, from the point of view of the tail section survivors. Man, they had it rough. There's probably a blog or something that could describe it better than I have time for at the moment.

Dave, one of the best options for getting caught up on the show is to check the "Lost Video Gallery" at the ABC website: http://abc.go.com/primetime/lost/
Some details, significant or not:
-Eko killed two "Others" with a rock when they tried to take him. He was the first person they tried to take. Immediately afterward, he stopped talking and stayed silent for 40 days (tempted to check if it was 42).
-When they found the storage bunker, there was a case inside that had, among other things, a radio tranciever and a glass eye.
-We found out that the communications Boone heard on the radio in the drug smuggler's plane just before it fell and smashed him up were, in fact, the tail section survivors.
-It was somewhat revealed that the people who were being taken were either "strong" or "good people." That comes from....the Others' spy saying "He wasn't a good person. That's why he wasn't on the list."
-We found out who the guy was that Eko and Jin saw in the forest, and how he got there. (If you watch that ABC clip, you see it)
-What made Eko talk again was seeing Anna Lucia sitting next to a stream, crying.
Eko: "It took 40 days."
Anna Lucia: "What, for you to talk?"
Eko: "For you to cry."
So, what I'm thinking about now is how everyone is supposed to be on the island for a reason. Whether it's the theory that they are in purgatory, or they are a part of some tropical version of "The Game," and The Others are just stagehands, each person has something to learn from being there. That means Mr. Eko isn't supposed to be there because The Others tried to take him. BUT they didn't try and take him the second time, which makes me think that it gave him a personal demon when he had to kill two people -- obvious in the fact that he stopped talking. Maybe there's something about that tied to his past?

**SPOILERS**
Next week will be a flashback for Anna Lucia, probably correlating the conflicts in her past life to dealing with the fact that she killed Shannon and what the other castaways think of her. I hear this has something to do with her former job.
But the following week is going to be another flashback for Kate. We are supposed to get a big chunk of info about Kate that we've been wanting. I won't say what it is. I'm assuming this end up relating to her caring for Sawyer as he recovers from the gunshot wound.
**/SPOILERS**
OK, so does anyone else find it interesting that Jack has to make the life/death choice for yet ANOTHER Rutherford? Hmm? HMMM?!
Is it just me, or does everything Anna trys to do come out wrong/hurting someone?
Interesting that the door to the shed also had "quarantine" on the inside and the Darma logo had an arrow instead of a swan

Why would the French group have US Army knives? Not that it's any sort of certain connection. I just see a possibility in there. For some reason, I could instantly imagine a tangled scenario where Anna Lucia, not knowing Danielle Russeau, catches her sneaking through the woods and holds the knife out to attack her. Danielle gets wide-eyed and asks where she got the knife, and then explains that her science team ran across some U.S. Army soldiers during their expedition, and the soldiers gave them that knife (or knives).
It's really loose, but I connected to that thoery instantly.

Just read an awesome theory on a connection. Locke's dad is the con man Mr. Sawyer. Makes sense. He's age appropriate. He clearly is a con man in how well he orchastrated Locke into giving him a kidney. Thoughts?
Interesting, and also possible.
I know who the next person to go is... and I hate that I know. Sometimes spoilers feel like just that.
That puts us back on the original topic of who's going to die.
I know from the DVD extras that they were planning to kill Jack in the pilot. But decided that would betray the audience. Jack is a natural leader even if he is reluctant to be. Everyone trusts him. It'd be a shame. Anyone else wondering what happened to the body of Jacks Dad? It wasn't in the coffin.
Hurley more so than anyone, is connected to the island by the numbers, that just can't be a coincidence . He's part of the larger mystery. I think he's safe , for now.
Locke is also connected I'd vote him most likely to figure out what's going on. The downside is he'll rationalize the death of the other castaways to find answers if he feels he has to.
Sawyer is an A-hole, he keeps things interesting for us to watch but I wouldn't choose him as someone to be stranded on an island with. His biggest connection would seem to be with Jacks Dad. That being revealed, his usefulness is in question.
The Island wanted Walt. His ability has something to do with the larger mystery. Michael, at this point, may be a redshirt. Though, I wonder who was driving the car that hit him 9 years ago?
Kate attracts too many viewers to be killed off. Period. Her keepsake from her true love is a passenger plane, that might seem like a spurious connection but in the next couple weeks I think that'll change.
Sayid has tech knowledge, I believe he'll help to figure out the mystery, but what we've seen of his past doesn't connect him to the island. With Shan gone he may become dangerous.
Now that Rose and Bernard are reunited, it strikes me as something these writers would do , to kill one of them. Probably Bernard.
Who was Jin delivering the watch to ? Was it the guy Sun had been set up on a date by her parents with ? I think we'll find out before either life is danger.
If the story has the slightest chance for a happy ending, it'll be Claire and Aaron living happily ever after. Though I don't put anything past these writers.
Which brings me to Charlie, most likely to be offed next in my opinion.
