...wow. What song(s), if any, made you say WOW the first time you heard them? Songs that made you realize that there was more out there than your little town had exposed you to. Songs that might have changed your life.
I have two:
Moondance - Van Morrison
Beautiful Disaster - 311
It didn't change my life, but i remember hearing PDA by....
crap, don't you hate it when your mind just goes totally blank. Bahhh!
Anyway, i liked that song so much i bought the album, "Turn on Your Bright Lights". At the time (and still today) radio sucked balls and was dominated by Creed (where as today its dominated by Creed minus Scott Stapp).
Interpol!!!! That is the band i was looking for!
(here is a tiny bit of incite into how my brain works.)

Through the course of my life, in no particular order:
Need You Tonight - INXS
Where the Streets Have No Name - U2
Kiss Them For Me - Siouxie & the Banshees
Holiday in Cambodia - Dead Kennedys
Istanbul Not Constantinople - TMBG
Ah, there's plenty, but those I really remember when I heard them

Lets See.
Prayer- Disturbed....really their whole album of "Believe" was just great. A great album.
Love Song- 311's version- I like "The Cure's" but there is something about the way 311 did it.
Achilles Last Stand- Led Zeppelin
Anemia and Lateralas- Tool
Let there Be-The Children of Eden Soundtrack.
And many many more. I mean there have been a lot of times I have to stop and sit down because I am moved by songs. If I named all of those times I'd be here for the whole night.
Gypsy Eyes by The Jimi Hendrix Experience
I was 14 and found this 8-track compilation of 70's songs in a bunch of tapes that I got from who knows where... When I heard the kick drum and that guitar slide right down into fast, bluesy riff, I nearly pissed myself- I had found one of the greatest songs ever written. Twenty eight Hendrix albums later, it's still my favorite and it stills gets my head shakin' and my foot tappin'...
Oh, i agree about the Tool songs!
I'd also like to add Killing in the Name Of, by RATM
But 311's Love Song? I don't want you to justify it to me, because really, you shouldn't have too. But i was hoping for something a little more from them on that. To me it was too much straight cover, not enough 311 in it.

[/ QUOTE ] I like to think about those kinds of tunes in the context of the actual LPs. There were many that left a lasting impression.
The Cars: The Cars
Circle Jerks: Wild In The Streets
Dead Kennedys : Fresh Fruit For Rotting Vegetables
Jimi Hendrix: The Jimi Hendrix Experience and Electric Lady Land
Led Zeppelin: Led Zeppelin II and Physical Graffiti
The Beatles: Rubber Soul, Abbey Road and The White Album
Pink Floyd: Ummagumma, Meddle, Dark Side of The Moon and The Wall
The Doors: The Doors
U2: War
King Crimson: Islands
Jackson Brown: Late for The Sky
Hole: Live Through This and Celebrity Skin
I'm sure I could come up with more. Music is,for me, kind of like the sense of smell. It can remind me of things I haven't thought of in decades.

The first act of Phantom of the Opera. Techincally not a song, but there's music and there's singing, so.......there.

I don't know why, but when I heard that song I thought it was great, I was seeing a new side to 311. I do want them to go back to the "down" days. That was great stuff.
I mean if 311 had made it too hard core, it would have thrown the song off. I thought what they did with it was fine. Good Song, all it needed was that little touch to make it stick out in my mind which, for whatever reason, it does. Yeah I agree though It was nothing like 311, though.

Sure it's a song. It's on the soundtrack.
Mine would be The Used - I Caught the Fire.

In no order whatsoever:
King's X - Goldilox
Anthrax - Among the Living
The Beatles - I Just Saw a Face
Willie Nelson - Whiskey River
Faith No More - A Small Victory
Johnny Cash - Folsom Prison Blues
These off the top of my head are a lot of the reason I first bought a bass guitar and wanted to make noise.
Here's a few that did it for me;
Get off, Prince
Thank You, Dido
The Very Thought of You, Billy Holiday
Yjste Jam, Dream Theatre
I'm sure there's more, but that's all I can think up right now.

Cowboys From Hell.
I wasn't even a big metal fan until I heard it. In fact, the Cowboys From Hell album was my first metal purchase (I did own a few tapes from Metallica and Slayer but they had been given to me). That started me down the path of metal.

Man, I don't even know where to start. I'm easily affected by music, so my list is out of control. I guess I'll have to go autobiographically.
Satisfaction - The Rolling Stones
Like a Surgeon - Weird Al Yankovich
Peter Piper, It's Tricky - Run DMC
Straight Outta Compton, Dopeman - NWA
Enjoy the Silence - Depeche Mode
And Justice For All - Metallica
Mama Said Knock You Out - LL Cool J
Dirty Nursery Rhymes - 2 Live Crew
Man in the Box - Alice In Chains
KKK Bitch - Body Count
Voodoo Chile - Jimi Hendrix
I Am The Walrus - The Beatles
Mouth For War - Pantera
Wicked Garden - Stone Temple Pilots
Breathe, Time - Pink Floyd
Head Like a Hole - NIN
Killing in the Name - Rage Against the Machine
My Name is Mud - Primus
Sober - Tool
Shogun Named Marcus - Clutch
Fuck and Run - Liz Phair
The End, L.A. Woman - The Doors
Big News I, Spacegrass - Clutch
Hammer Smashed Face - Cannibal Corpse
Christian Sands - Tricky

Hip Hop - Mos Def

Damn, and I haven't even listed where the entire Superunknown album from Soundgarden, or Mother Love Bone and Pearl Jam come in yet, and those are huge. I gotta quit before I sprain something.
Ohhhh, way to go with the Body Count. I had completely forgotten about them. I remember when that Album came out, Charlton Heston recited the lyrics to KKK Bitch on Capitol Hill, the results = hilarious.

I remember the first time I heard No Quarter and the last time I heard Head Like a Hole. WOW, is right.

I think Heston should release a spoken-word version of that entire album. "Evil Dick", anyone?

Dude, I would buy that twice!
I think you're right. It might have been Cop Killer, but i seem to remember a line about Tipper Gore...
And yes, Evil Dick would be hysterical.

I forgot two that usually stand out:
Given to Fly - Pearl Jam
What the Hell Have I - Alice in Chains
Oh, Oh, Junkhead by AIC!!!

I could probably add all of Dirt and be comfortable!

Me too. Probably Mad Season too, although that wasn't really because of the album but because of what was going on at the time -- worst breakup evar! I can barely listen to any of those songs anymore and I used to listen to that album probably three times a day.
RobinHoodDaffy made a good call with Faith No More - A Small Victory.
I have to add to my list:
Falling To Pieces, Zombie Eaters - Faith No More
Indifference - Pearl Jam
Seasons - Chris Cornell
side note: if anyone ever comes on here and says I've died, remind them to play Seasons at my funeral!

In no order:
Pearl Jam - Betterman
The Doors - The End, and most of their live stuff
Night Ranger - Sister Christian
Urge Overkill- Girl, You'll Be a Woman Soon (no offense to Neil, but this is one cover that outdoes the original)
Coolio - Gangsta's Paradise
Bob Dylan - Like a Rollin' Stone
The Rolling Stones - Paint It Black
All I can think of right now.

Karma- You ever heard Faith No More's cover of Lionel Richie's "I'm Easy"?
I only saw the video once, but that I shall never forget.
Instead of "WOW" it was more like "eeeeewwwwwwww....."
Easy like Sunday morning...
I've been trying to find a copy of that for years.

[/ QUOTE ] Yep, I have the single -- the one with a rhino massaging another rhino's back. It was worth it for that song alone, but it has a cover of the Dead Kennedys song "Let's Lynch the Landlord" too. Great songs.

[/ QUOTE ] Isn't that pretty much like what Mike Patton did in the song? Lionel Ritchie sings more of an "ooh" right before the guitar solo and Mike Patton turned it into an "Ew!"
Ever listen to Mr. Bungle?

Yepper. I have a couple albums. I still want to check out Disco Volante. They're a little spastic, but I love it when I'm in the mood. If you like Mike Patton, Faith No More, and/or Mr. Bungle you should check out Tomahawk. Mit Gas is a great album.

Yay! Mr. Bungle!
Disco Volante is good. It's their weirdest, least song-oriented album. In some ways, its more like a Boredoms album.
When I saw them play in '91 or '92, they did the whole show wearing rubber masks. They also played Nirvana's "Territorial Pissing".

Well, I guess that's more motivation to get the earlier albums since there won't be new ones. That stinks. He even singled the person out who he says caused it, which is suprising even though he didn't give names.

Champagne Supernova always reminds me of a trip I took with a bunch of friends from school
The only Cd that we had on the whole trip was that single
Knew the words off by heart after a day
Always more of a fan of "Wonderwall" or "Masterplan"

I think the official title was Songs to Make Love To. I almost bought it the only time I saw it for sale. Oddly enough, it was at a Caldor, a smaller K-Mart type place that I wouldn't have thought would carry such things.

I won't say that these songs changed my life. I have a few songs that I classify as "chill" songs that make you forget everything. There are also a few songs that, when played in a public setting, everyone in the room connects with everyone else. So the maximum effects are not weathered away by repeated listening, I refuse to own any of the folling songs:
"Dock of the Bay"--Otis Redding
"What a Wonderful World"--Louis Armstrong
"Georgia on My Mind"--Ray Charles
"Handy Man"--James Taylor
"Long December"--Counting Crows
"Dance with You"--Live
There are a ton of chill songs that I own, but eventually they will lose their mystique as I will tend to use those songs as crutches during bouts of depression.
