As far as Hard Rock guitarists go this guy was one of the greats. What makes someone do this?

Heard this on Howard this morning. From what a caller said, there was no pat-down of the patrons nor was there a metal detector. WTF?!?! How can a club like this operate these days without any type of precautionary measures in place? Whoever the promoter for damageplan's club tour should be fired and held accountable for the obvious lack of security. This type of shit makes me sick.

One of the greatest metal guitarist of our time... /forums/images/icons/frown.gif
In the past 20 years there have been only 4 metal bands that have been true MONSTERS of the genre... and Pantera was #2. Dimebag was the top of the game. He will be missed.
How horrible for his brother (the drummer of the band, who was also in Pantera) to have to live with that memory...
Ahh, Noooo!
That is horrible, horrible news. /forums/images/icons/frown.gif

Who were the other 4 people that were "at least 4 more people were killed" Who were they? I'd like to know. Were they fans? I Know one was a bouncer. But what were their names? And why does no one care that they died as well? Why isn't that as horrible as Dimebag dying? It's horrible.

It's not that people don't care... but it would be like if someone told you a friend of yours died, along with four other people. Would you demand to know who the four other people were? Nope. We will know in a few days the names of all the dead.

Yes I would demand to know the names of the other people that died along side my friend. Because I would like to know what all went down. I would like to know their names because they unfortunately died along side my friend, maybe not standing together, but in the same incident.
But I know what you're saying. It's harder when it's someone you know. Someone that has had some impact on your life, but the others are people are people too.

The authorities at a given site will not give out the names of non-famous victims out of respect for family members who have not yet been contacted. Apparently if you're famous it's harder to keep it a secret from the press, so in return, their friends and families are not treated with the same respect.

When I first heard the news they said two members had been killed, I think the media is a little slow as they do not seem to know what an impact this story has. Hard Rock is a throw away genre that unless a frontman like Cobain passes, the media has little idea who died. I hope it isn't Vinnie, it would be just too damn hard on the family left behind.

I just want to know this.. It says.. that The murderer, was being followed by an officer, and a bouncer.. or something.. While he walked on stage... How come they didn't stop him before he reached the stage? Or did I misread?
The way my minds eye sees it as happening, is that the guy barged in, pushing his way thru the crowd with the bouncer trailing him, trying to get him to leave without having to ruff him up. (I'm assuming that he is just treating this guy as a normal patron, not a gun welding psycho). I guess the guy couldn't get too him before it was too late.

Lennon was assassinated because he was going against the status quo. He was trying to make a change, and anyone who makes a change is assassinated. Not everybody, but it has happened countless times in our past: Jesus (whether you believe in the religious aspect, or him being a regular person is up to you) was killed because he grew too powerful, and threatened the status quo. MLK was shot, for trying to change the Status Quo, JFK was shot for the same reason MLK was. Lincoln was shot because of the (I don't know how to spell)Emansipation Proclimation. Which free'd the slaves at the price of his neck.
It makes no sense to why Dimebag would be shot, on an annaversery of someone elses death. Then again I'm not a killer.
So who knows. We'll never know why he did it. He's dead, maybe his friends would know. and I'm sure they'll find his friends and ask. But no one will ever know except for the killer.
BAMSS04

He jumped on stage, and then the bouncer came out there and tackled him. For doing that he was shot. I think he was killed. Bouncers are unarmed, I hope you know that. They may be big but there not bulletproof, so I'm sure the rest of them more than likely ran the hell out of there as anyone (who is unarmed) would do in that situation. Then a cop ran in there after hearing the shots and killed the gunman.

Lennon was killed because the guy who killed him was INSANE! Stop pretending like he died for grander reasons.
I bounced for a few years... I made $10 an hour. Is that enough money to get stabbed or shot for? Bouncers do what they can. They are not Jedi. They cannot stop bullets or use their powers to predict the actions of others.

You know that they have been studying insanity for hundreds of years, and they still can't find a logical explanation for how someone is insane, or not insane. They declared that Jeffery Dahmer was completely sane in testimony. So I think there is a little more to a murderer, than insanity. It's easy to put a label on someone, because then you don't have to understand. But to understand is the only way to eliminate the problem.

PDX man involved in deadly Ohio nightclub shooting
10:50 AM PST on Thursday, December 9, 2004
By KGW and AP Staff
COLUMBUS, Ohio -- A gunman charged onstage at a nightclub and opened fire on the band and crowd, killing top heavy metal guitarist "Dimebag" Darrell Abbott and three other people before a police officer shot him to death, authorities said.
Damageplan lead singer Patrick Lachman is a Portland native. He was on stage during the shooting, but his parents told KGW Thursday morning that he was not injured.
The gunman had a hostage in a headlock and appeared to be preparing to kill him when the officer fired, police spokesman Sgt. Brent Mull said. The hostage escaped uninjured, Mull said.
Two other people were hospitalized. Police said one was in intensive care and the other stable.
Police identified the gunman as Nathan Gale, 25, of Marysville, 25 miles northwest of Columbus. Police said they had no information on a motive or any connection to Abbott or his band, the Texas-based group Damageplan.
Damageplan had just begun its first song at Alrosa Villa club Wednesday night when the gunman climbed onstage, started yelling and shot Abbott five or six times at point-blank range, witness Chris Couch said.
Mull said the gunman's exact statement was unclear because of the loud music. He said some witnesses reported hearing an accusation about Abbott breaking up his former band, thrash-rock pioneer Pantera, but it could not be confirmed whether the speaker was the gunman or a fan.
Couch, 22, said the man was wearing a hooded sweat shirt and was followed by a bouncer and another club employee.
Couch said that after firing on the guitarist, the gunman shot a bouncer who had pulled him off the musician, while fans surged toward the exit. The gunman then fired into the crowd of more than 250 people, Mull said.
Mull said Officer James D. Niggemeyer, patrolling nearby, arrived within two minutes of hearing the call. Niggemeyer, 31, saw one person lying dead and the suspect holding onto another "pretty much in a headlock," Mull said.
He said the hostage, "probably a fan, maybe someone who worked with the band," was able to maneuver out of the way before the officer fired.
Mull praised Niggemeyer's response.
"If the officer wasn't as close as he was, I think this would have been a lot worse," he said. "It was a chaotic scene, just a horrific scene."
Besides Abbott and Gale, police said the dead included Nathan Bray, 23, and Erin Halk, 29. Police said the name of the fifth person killed was being withheld pending notification of family.
Couch said he believed the shooter had a plan. "It was definitely a grudge. It was against something," he said.
Mull said he believed there was amateur video that officers could view for clues but that police had no answers yet. "We may never know a motive for this, unless he left a note," Mull said.
Gale has a minor police record in Marysville, said Police Chief Floyd Golden. He was pulled over for driving with a suspended license last month.
Thursday morning, a dozen yellow roses, still in plastic wrap, lay near the entry to the low-slung beige building that since 1974 has hosted mostly heavy metal acts. The 641-person-capacity club, just off a freeway exit on the city's north side, sits amid motels, small businesses and office complexes.
Dozens of messages were posted to the band's Web site after the shootings.
"This is the worst day in metal history," one posting read.
"The metal world feels your pain," another wrote.
Damageplan's debut album, "New Found Power," which was released in February by Elektra, was produced by Abbott and his brother, drummer Vinnie Paul Abbott. Lachman is the lead singer and Bob Zilla plays the bass.
Earlier, the brothers had been members of the Grammy-nominated Pantera, whose popularity soared in the early 1990s with a fast, aggressive sound.
"Damageplan carries on the tradition Pantera started, the ... hell-raising tradition we were all about," Vinnie Paul Abbott told The Dallas Morning News in October.
"It took awhile for some of the Pantera fans to accept it; we knew that was gonna be the case," he said. "Change is something that people have a hard time accepting. But me and Dime intended on doing this our whole lives."
The shootings came exactly 24 years after John Lennon was shot to death outside his New York apartment building by a deranged fan.

My fiancee had never heard Pantera before a friend of hers took her to a show years ago- she went out the day after the concert and bought every album. I have many fond memories of hanging out with my Navy buddies, drinking beer, smoking, and rocking to some Pantera.
Bands break up- often they're the ones that you'd like to see go on forever. Some bands that should have disintegrated years ago just keep lingering on and on... Things change- that's the way of the universe, but some people just can't accept change. A dude's got to have some serious issues if the break up of a band sends him over the edge.

That cop may have saved Vinnies life... a witness from the club, who remained inside during the whole thing, said that it looked like the gunman had Darrell's brother held as a hostage and was about to shoot him when the cop came in and killed him.
This has of course not been confirmed but I am sure we will know more in the coming days.

My friends and I used to bowl at Spare Time Lanes in Arlington. There was this guy who used to bowl there, a small, but utterly crazy, frizzy-haired headbanger type guy. Whenever he'd bowl a strike he would run over to the ball return and rack the shit out of himself on it, point his face to the sky and scream like a highlander during the quickening.
My friends and I bowled there two nights a week , after a couple months I had seen this a few times, this guy doing this crazy stuff. He was beligerent , but more amusing than annoying. So one night, we end up on the lane right beside his and he offers me a beer . I was 16 . I had long hair and was often told I looked older than I was , though, it's doubtful I could've passed for 21. But sure.
" MMM Beer." I say.
" You know who I am right ? " he says.
" Yeah, you're the crazy guy who racks himself whenever he gets a strike. " His freinds, a guy ( Chris from that article, goes by Cat. ) and a girl look up from trying to swallow eachothers faces to give me, a knowing smile , like they've seen this episode of the show before, but they know it'll still be funny. Yet they decided to go back to sucking face instead of watching the plot unfold.
" You look like you'd be the type to watch Headbangers Ball, listen to metal , maybe even play a little guitar ? " He says.
" Yeah , but I can't stand Ricky Rachtman. " I say.
" Who can ? "
" Shrugs "
" You still don't know who I am ? " He asks. And that's when my mind started to reach for a name... found it. In the folder marked "Crazy Bowling Guy ". The manager had called him out a few times for his rambunctious behavior and I heard the managers voice, in my head say "Calm it down Daryl."
" Your name's Daryl. " I said.
... And this is how I met, " Dimebag Darrel. " he says.
" Oh, so, kinda like that Pantera guy , Diamond Darrel ? " This is when his friends broke face to laugh at both of us.
" I decided to change it . " he says. Grimacing at his friends.
But me ? I'm not sure if my leg has been pulled clean out of the socket yet. … There's something about seeing someone on MTV, on the cover of Hit Parader, Metal Mania , Edge etc. that makes them seem HUGE , bigger than life. The Darrel I was meeting looked like him, but was 5'6" , 5'7" at the most , and at that time, had a pink stripe down his long brown goatee. I was listening to Pantera then , more Metallica , Slayer, Sepultura , but they were on the play list.
That night I went back to Darrell’s with him and his friends ,drank some more beers , learned to play “Cemetery Gates “, looked at the pictures tacked to his studio wall : Him with Kirk and Lars , Him with Alice Cooper ,with Gene Simmons etc. Smoked a bizzowl, listened to “Vulgar Display of Power” before Phil added vocals , and was asked my honest opinion about the instrumental arrangements. Most importantly. I was invited to come over again.
Over the next two or three months I hung out with Dimebag here and there , we weren’t best buds or anything , but maybe , a little bit ? mentor / protégé . Sometimes we’d jam out , sometimes just get drunk in the bar at Spare Time , A couple great Partys…
This news [censored] me up man , Senseless…
I can’t say I’ve been a big fan or supporter recently , But I’d be much happier knowing Darrel lived to ripe old age. This is tough for me, at least it could’ve been an accident, for fuck sakes !?!
He was one of the very, very few famous people I’ve met , And one the much fewer who was cool to me.
Tonight I’m putting on “Cowboys From Hell “ and picking up the guitar I haven’t touched in three months.
F*CK!

Pantera wrote the soundtrack to my teens and they were the first band I saw in concert. When Far Beyond Driven was released, it was like an event for my friends and I. Three of us ran out and got the CD, went back to my house, sat in my room and listened to it from beginning to end. Then we sat and taped copies. I can't tell you how many times I've watched The Vulgar Video. While I haven't been following any of the former Pantera members' work for years, this still hits home in a weird way.
All I keep thinking about is how their next tour stop was right down the road from here at the Machine Shop. I guess none of the people who bought tickets asked for a refund, but considered it a donation to the band and family. They had a vigil in the parking lot. If that shit would have started to unfold here, I assure you it would have been a different story.

He was a semi-pro football player, a tattoo artist ,and a Clombus Blue jackets fan. People say he seemed "a little off ", but most didn't think he was "the type to do something like that. "
Unrelated,
I'm wondering how many people out of state have heard the "Dallas Stars" song ?
Found this this morning:
COLUMBUS, Ohio (Dec. 11) - The man who gunned down former Pantera guitarist "Dimebag'' Darrell Abbott during a concert was an obsessed fan of Abbott's former band and alarmed people with his bizarre behavior, a one-time friend said Friday.
Nathan Gale had told friends that Pantera musicians had stolen lyrics from him and were trying to steal his identity, former friend Dave Johnson said.
Gale, 25, charged the stage Wednesday at a show by Abbott's new band, Damageplan, and gunned down four people including Abbott before a police officer shot him to death. Two others were wounded.
Investigators said they may never know Gale's motive. Some witnesses said he yelled accusations that the influential heavy metal guitarist broke up Pantera, but police had not verified those reports.
Gale once showed up at a friend's house with songs he said he had written, said Johnson, 27. He wanted to sing the songs with Johnson's band but one musician said no because the lyrics were copied from Pantera.
"He'd been kind of weird before that so we thought it was another 'Crazy Nate' thing,'' Johnson said. "That was our nickname for him, 'Crazy Nate.'''
Johnson said Gale then calmly said that Pantera had stolen the lyrics from him and he was going to sue them. He also said the band was trying to steal his identity.
Johnson said Gale was a "hardcore'' Pantera fan and "that was all he listened to.''
Johnson said he last saw Gale in their hometown of Marysville, about 25 miles northwest of Columbus, about six months ago. He had distanced himself from Gale by then because of odd behavior that included talking and laughing to himself and once appearing to be holding an imaginary dog, he said. An imposing figure at 6-foot-3, Gale had made people uneasy at a Marysville tattoo parlor, staring and locking them into conversations about heavy metal music.
When he played offensive line for the semi-pro Lima Thunder football team, he psyched himself up before games by piping Pantera music into his headphones, coach Mark Green said.
"He seemed like a normal guy you would meet any other day,'' said Anthony Bundy, 20, who lived on the same block as Gale. "He was a keep-to-yourself type of person. He was real quiet.''
Hours before the shootings, Gale got into an argument with a worker at the tattoo studio over some equipment he wanted the studio to order for him. He later angrily walked out of the shop.
The worker, Bo Toler, said he thought Gale had come to the tattoo parlor because he wanted somebody to hang out with. "I just thought he was quiet. I thought he had low-self esteem because of his thick glasses,'' Toler said.
Gale had had minor run-ins with police since 1997 but wasn't considered a troublemaker, authorities said.
He served in the Marines in North Carolina until November 2003, when he was discharged after less than half of the typical four-year stint, Marine spokeswoman Gunnery Sgt. Kristine Scarber said. She declined to explain the discharge, citing privacy rules.
Gale's mother, Mary Clark, did not return phone messages seeking comment.
The violence at the Alrosa Villa club came just after the opening chords by Texas-based Damageplan, the band formed by Abbott and his brother, drummer Vinnie Paul Abbott, after they left Pantera. Gale dodged two band members, grabbed Darrell Abbott and shot him at least five times in the head, witnesses and police said.
In less than five minutes, Gale had also killed Erin Halk, 29, a club employee who loaded band equipment; fan Nathan Bray, 23; and band bodyguard Jeff Thompson, 40.
The band's drum technician, John Brooks, was released from Riverside Hospital on Friday, said Sgt. Mark Allen of hospital security. Tour manager Chris Paluska was in stable condition.
Vinnie Paul Abbott thanked fans for their support in a statement the band released Friday.
"With all his greatness and accomplishments on the guitar, DIME will be missed more for his giving personality, charisma, caring for others, love and most of all his HEART!! Twice as big as the state of TEXAS!!!!!!!!!!!!,'' Abbott said.

That guy was a [censored] piece of shit. I'm glad they [censored] shot his ass.
It just shows how stupid some people are!
Damage Plan was just a project between Dimebag and his brother. Pantera weren't broken up.
This kid was a [censored] fan of Pantera, a fuckin retard. I'm glad he's [censored] dead. People are so stupid This makes me so [censored] sick!
I was never a fan of pantera, but I was growing respect for Damage Plan.
This makes me sick as an artist. No one should be killed like that. Thats so much bullshit. I want to kill the mother [censored] again, I don't think him being dead is enough [censored] punishment. And atop that he shot other [censored] people.

It is bullshit... your post. No one has confirmed that he said anything about Pantera. The fact is that most people who were close enough to hear something said it was too loud to hear him say anything. How would anyone hear someone screaming something when they are all facing the speakers and 3 feet from them? Come on. That is ridiculous.

That's some cool looking art. The face one is pretty creepy. All hellraiser-like.
Oh, While I was bored browsing the magazine section at the store, I noticed one the the Guitar magazine's has an article and I think a cd of unreleased stuff of Dimebag's and some Tool tab. Looked like a cool issue. I would've gotten it if I had the $7 on me. I forget which guitar magazine it is though, sorry.

Today is the 5th anniversary of the murder of Dimebag Darrell, one of the best metal guitars to ever walk the earth and an all around great guy, so I thought that I would bring this thread back for a day. Such a waste of life, the man was a genius on the guitar. R.I.P. Dime, we still miss you brother. :(
