I picked up the Harry Potter DVD last night-
Motherf*ckers changed packaging...
Now it doesn't match the other two on the shelf...

There's a lot to be said for asthetics, dammit

you mean now it's a regular case instead of the big card things like the previous ones? I might not get this one since I didn't enjoy it as much as the second. But then it was better than the first so perhaps I should get it.

JK
11-24-2004, 07:24 PM
Yeah, it's just a plastic case and the insert is pretty damn weak as well. I wasn't even that impressed with the menus- it's as if they just threw the damn thing together to get it out there. I liked the movie, I liked it a lot- dark, and more adult themed, but the presentation is lacking.

so... You bought the dvd.. to.. loook at the Packaging??

This has to be the most worthless thread I've ever read... I mean... It's not about a movie.. but it's about it's.. packaging....... Who the fuck cares about the packaging?

Who the fuck buy's a DVD, video game, poster, box of cereal just to.. critique the packaging??

JK
11-28-2004, 09:54 PM
Hey, if you think it's a worthless thread, why did you even bother to respond? It's your own f*cking fault if this thread puts a stick your craw. I'm just pissed because I know these bastards have the money to make it look like the other two, but they cheaped out, presumably to save a few bucks and increase the bottom line. And I didn't buy it just to critique the f*cking packaging! I liked the movie, but I also like the shit to look good sitting on the shelf with the other- it's the f*cking principle- but I guess principles don't mean f*ck all anymore...

ZyronDrazil

I replied because of how silly it is to bitch about a wrapper.. It's not that big of a deal. It doesn't change the movie at all. And I am sure they'll release all 3 in a box set within the year.. so if You want to fork over another x ammount of cash for it, just for a case... go ahead.. but it doesn't change the movie..

JK
11-28-2004, 10:54 PM
So if your favorite movie, whatever it may be, was released on DVD in a plain white paper envelope with no insert, just a simple disc with the label written in Sharpie, you'd be perfectly content, even proud, to display it on the shelf with the other movies?

The point of the thread, which you're still missing- is the principle. It's important to have principles and it's important to have standards. That is the point of this stupid thread. The principle. I know it doesn't change the movie, it's the f*cking principle.

I disagree. I think packaging is a very important part. Why do you think these people pay so much to make the packaging look so bloody good and damn near impossible to open sometimes. Sometime I think the actual product cost less than the packaging itself. It may not change the content, but it does change the way I would feel about the content.

Eh, the only principle he knows of is the one that said, "Let me close the door so we can privately discuss how you can graduate from High School."

The packaging is about as importance as the FBI warning at the beginning of the DVD.

My current favorite packaging is for the after school specials on DVD. The box looks like a Trapper Keeper.

ZyronDrazil

The packaging is just an advertising tool, to drag you into buying the product that it contains. If you already know the product, that it contains is good, why let a shitty advertisment ruin it? Thats the point I'm trying to make. Why let someone's fuck up, piss you off so much? As long as they don't fuck up the product it contains, whatever it is. The [censored] package can be as bad it wants to.

No I wouldn't buy a dvd or anything if it came in a shittty package. I'm saying, the package could have whatever on the cover, as long as the product is in good storage, within the package, so that I know it is undamaged.

Why the fuck should I care about some stupid illustration on a cover? It's like looking at the cover of a book, at someone else's illustration, and saying "Oh that book [censored] sucks!" because the cover looks gay. As long as what is inside.. The Book, or whatever you wish to picture in your mind, isn't touched by anyone but its creator. The package can look however it wants too.

There is no principle. You didn't have to buy it. Nobody made you. The box didn't jump into your hands and say "Take me or die!" or anything. If it pissed you off so much, why did you buy it?

My point is that You, at the time valued what was inside more than the package. If you hated the package when you bought it, and it pissed you off so much.. why did you buy it otherwise?

You could have researched on whether they wree going to release a boxed set anytime soon. Which they are. It's your fault for being impatient to satisfy every ounce of pleasure the movie brought to you.

If it is a disgrace to the movie, then I understand your pain.

No body twisted your arm to buy the thing. If you don't think it matches, or whtev why don't you get 3 blank cd covers.. then they'll all be the same cover.. or something. If it bothers you that much..

FanGirl

Once again you missed the point entirely. You obviously have no appreciation for asethetics. The whole point is why make the first two match if you weren't going to continue the trend? It has nothing to do with the movie, it has to do with the way it sits on people's shelves at home. There is no reason to make it different is the whole point. And to wait for a box set of seven movies when they are on movie three when you enjoy the movies is unneccessary.

The point of the post was simply to complain that in this day and age where some companies like Paramount go out of thier way to make DVDs match so they look good on your shelves, why would this company choose to buck the system. It is a very valid complaint.

Maybe you stack your dvds on the floor next two your cynderblock and 2x4 entertainment center, but those who have matching non-milk crate furniture like to have a certain asthetic. Maybe you need to watch more of those decorating shows to understand.

Packaging is like the plastic wrap around a sammich you might buy at a store. I don't give a pooh how it was wrapped, as long as the sammich tastes good.

TomHarrington

But you probably won't be displaying the sandwich on your entertainment center for years to come. Probably.

And I thought I was a geek...

Razorback. You're a genius.

To: everyone who cares..
It really doesn't matter what the package looks like. I'm sure that the creators of the package didn't think twice about it. They shrugged and said "This cover would cost us less, and we'd still get the same ammount of money. Whats the point in making a good case when we're releasing all 3 in a boxed set anyway? Who's going to buy this unless they really cared that much about a stupid package."

The creators didn't see any profit, matching the boxes together. It would have costed them more to have done it, and they wouldn't have much bank, seeing as the boxed set is already released. It would have costed them more to release it, they figured, lets get this out on dvd as cheap as possible, then make the boxed set beautiful, because, every band, anyone in film or anything, who has created a boxed set knows how fast and how well they sell over years.

Thats why K.S. himself released a "collectors addition" of clerks. Although its a boxed set of one dvd. He souped it up with everything he felt he should release with what he hadn't shown to the world. He also did it to see if Clerks was still popular. And since it sold well, I'm sure thats one of the Reasons that he is making TPOC. Because, he see's profit in it. He's not going to make another Jay and Bob movie, or a movie like that unless he see's profit in it. And since there is.. he's going for it..

I totally lost my point. But what I mean means what I say.

Maybe this thread would have been a whole lot easier for him to deal with if 'trivial rantings about.." had been added to the title. Either way, the guy seems very adamant about proving his point.
