You haven't seen many movies, then, dude. It was milktoast if you ask me- just barely funny. How the hell did it beat the MATR....oh wait, the R rating. Oh well.

"How dare Jim Carrey try and do some actual acting in The Majestic or the Truman Show? Give us our rubber-faced jackass back!"

Go rent Monty Python and the Holy Grail and then we'll talk.

OK i know i'm going to catch a lot of [censored] for this, but i just don't find "Holy Grail" that funny, and in fact i think that a lot of people pretend to think it's funny because they are told it is, so they just go along with it. I have now facts to back this up, its just a theory, like the German's love David Hasselhoff.
Now that i have offended all, fire away i can take it.

You're entitled not to like it, I'm certainly not going to yell at you or anything. And I would agree that there are certainly films that I don't understand the appeal of, and it seems that everyone likes just because you are "supposed" to like it. But for me, 'Holy Grail' is not in that category. It makes me laugh hard every time I see it, and, like good episodes of The Simpsons, knowing the jokes actually seems to enhance their funniness. Then again, Monty Python is very love it or hate it comedy.

He has a point, though. I didn't want to even check out "Monty Python and the Holy Grail" until all the people I work with said it was awesome. I checked it out and I loved it. I don't know what that means but he does have a point.

Well no, his point was that everyone reveres Holy Grail only because they have always heard that is what you do; they go along with the crowd. But that if you strip away that rep, it is actually not all that good. In your case you heard it was good, and you enjoyed it. So you disprove his point.

I'm trying to think about what films I feel that way about, where the majority of people really dig the movie but your own opinion of it is rather low. Well I'm not really a silent movie fan, as I wrote about in my column a few weeks ago, even though all film buffs are supposed to worship silent cinema. I'm not a big fan of The Graduate either, I've always felt that movie is overrated, or at least, really dated.

I think its a hilarious movie, but I know people who don't really like it, so I'm not entirely shocked or offended. It is very ridiculous and I can easily imagine that some people don't like it. I just believe that something so ridiculous doesn't need any context in the present to be funny, so the movie is in a way timeless.

Ok, It really wasn't my point that everyone pretends to like the movie, obviously there are a good number of people who do. I just think that there is a group out there that pretend to like it, at least at first, and maybe these people learn to love it. Hell when i had my first beer i didn't particularly enjoy the taste, but now if find them very refreshing, of course my first beer was a warm Miller High Life out of someone's trunk, but i digress. English Comedy is just not my thing or Python isn't anyway, ( I wonder why i like Mr. Bean but not Monte Python?) and i like the individual members of the Troupe just fine, Gillium's a fine director, Cleese is a wonderful actor, etc...
I just think that there are some people who pretend to like that stuff to go along with the group, not a large number, that was never my contention, but subset non the less.

Sorry... but I am not buying this theory. The movie is hillarious and I have never heard anyone say "Oh yeah I love that movie" and then not proceed to quote it to death. People don't pretend to like a movie and then learn it backwards and forwards.

I do know people who have not seen it who admit to not having seen it.

Are you talking about Bruce Almighty or Monty Python and the Holy Grail?

Since my response is to Dave, I am talking about the "Grail".
