Well am I the only redneck tool on here or do other people like the world's most blatent waste of fossil fuels? I just got into it really this year. I have a new girlfriend and the whole "meet the parents thing" was a Daytona Party. So everyone says, who do you root for and I just said oh, the green car. Turns out the green car is Bobby Labonte and since Daytona I've actually been following him and it's been a really exciting season for the dude and I'm starting to really like NASCAR. Sorry so wordy for a simple question, but shit I am a New Yorker.

I would love to watch NASCAR, but I'm usually too busy watching the grass grow. /forums/images/icons/wink.gif

Seriously, I don't consider NASCAR to be a sport, I think driving really fast is more of a skill. I know, I know, it's really hot in the car and other stuff, but when I look at NASCAR drivers the first thing that springs to mind isn't "athelete". The first thing that jumps to my mind is usually, "GAH! Look at that moustache!"

By the way, my family is composed entirely of rednecks. Maybe that accounts for my NASCAR resentment.

I used to always hate NASCAR and thought it was way too slow to be interesting, but two of my friends always watch it and it grows more and more on me each year. I think this year was the first year that I actually watched a race for over an hour.

I still don't think I'll ever be a real fan, though.

Watching on T.V = bullshit.

Going in person and drinking a case of beer = fun.

there are many nascar fans, and many closet nascar fans.

do not hang your head in shame 35mmCritic, wear your insanely bright and seizure inducing racing shirts with pride!

i enjoy nascar, but i dont think ive ever sat and watched an entire race.

what i really enjoy is dirt track sprint car racing. that is by far the most exciting form of motorsports. the races are short, always lots of action, and its just damn awsome.

I am a NASCAR super-fan. I used to write for a NASCAR site FOR FREE because I loved it so much. /forums/images/icons/laugh.gif Anyway, things did slow down a bit for me after Dale died but now I am in full swing again. I root for Kenny Wallace, Steve Park, Junior and a few other dudes too. Kenny is my favorite overall though. You have to love a guy who seeks out his fans and hangs out with them. /forums/images/icons/laugh.gif

I'm like DarthMaulRat or Efexeye, I'll go t the race and hang out or I'll just catch a recap on Sportcenter. It doesn't really matter.

YAY!
I love NASCAR. Used to dislike it in the past, bur for three years now, I've been a fan. I hated something I did'nt understand. But one day I decided to watch a race... WOW!
There are some out there who believe the drivers are not athletes. Truth is, they are very much so. Modern drivers do so much off and on-track to enhance their abilities. Overweight racers are a thing of the past, pit crews have a daily exercise regimen, etc. It's quite involved.
I would like some more road courses in the overall mix though.
I still can't believe it is the second most watched sport in America!

Just remember that many of these guys came from that type of racing. /forums/images/icons/smile.gif A few still compete in it on some level.

oh, i remember. thats the great part.

i saw jeff gordon drive a sprint car in 1988 when he was just a punk kid (so was i).

dave blaney is getting better and better, and he's gonna win a nascar race in the next couple of years, and ive seen him race sprint cars as well.

kenny schraeder has driven sprint cars (well, he's driven just about everything with wheels and a motor). same with tony stewart, ryan newman and im sure many more.

sprint cars are amazing to watch, you should all find some sprint car racing to watch. if it doesnt get your pulse racing, your dead.

I would insult Nascar, but you know it is so cool when people crash, that is the reason Nascar is cool whether people will admit it or not.

It is always nice to see people who can't comprehend something, or who have never tried, bash it.

Actually, I have tried to comprehend NASCAR (for years actually) and it's religion-like following, having been a long time fan of F-1, CART and Indy racing. However, I quickly became disenchanted with the rhetoric that swirls around the NASCAR circuit, just as the whole Indy/CART (and whatever else they want to call the circuit today) control/power struggle has left me frustrated. So far (in my humble opinion), the only type of auto racing that seems to remember what the whole point of the sport was, is F-1, a point proven by the mere fact that many drivers in other divisions/types have made a move to F-1. Just because I'm a "girl" and poked fun along with the others, doesn't mean I'm a complete idiot on the topic at hand. However...If you would like to try and make me comprehend enough to really care again, I'd be happy to listen!

Denyse,

When I think of racing, I definately do not think of F-1. To me, racing involves passing cars. I will give you the play by play for every F-1 race.

"Green Flag...oh, horrible accident in turn one, half the cars out of the race...the rest are going to follow one another for 76 laps, not attempting to pass...checkered flag."

basically, whatever position you end up in after the first turn wreck is the position you finish. a couple of years ago, during the entire F-1 season, there was 76 lead changes, and only 13 of those passes were actual racing passes, that did not occur due to to crashes/mechanical failure or pit stops. drivers go to F-1 because there is alot of money in F-1.

nascar on the other hand, always has plenty of cars racing with each other, there is always passing, and always lots of action.

That is why I love NASCAR over the other forms of racing. F1 is like watching very skilled realist paint the most perfect shapes... impressive but not extremely exciting.

NASCAR is like watching a bunch of angry fauvist chucking their paint around the canvas as a way to express their vision without focusing on realism or perfection.

Both are highly skilled but I just like the fauvist over the realist. /forums/images/icons/laugh.gif

F1 racing is ok. It does lack that "oomph" though... the higher speeds are nice, don't get me wrong, but they just seem to do nothing. Very little passing indeed.
Is'nt open wheel racing having a problem these days?
I'm also a fan of rally racing. Those drivers are nuts! /forums/images/icons/grin.gif
Anyone see the sunday poconno race? Flames! Flames I say!
