In reality I've never experienced a worse year for music (so far anyway).

[/ QUOTE ]

Once The New Pornographers "Electric Version" comes out, all that will change. That, and the new Mogwai too. /forums/images/icons/grin.gif

And as far as stuff that's been released already... what about Cat Power, The Delgados, The Postal Service....? So far I think this is shaping up to be a great year.

I've given up on music for now. All the chart toppers are rap, and I just can't get into rap. Honestly, if you feature a different artist in every one of your songs, shouldn't people get the idea that you're not talented? I can play trumpet on a high school level, so why can't I be paid for featuring myself with guys from the Kinks, Foo Fighters, etc..?

The other music I see more of is pop-punk, which is just awful. I listened to punk rock for some 5 years but its all the same now, nothing daring or experimental or even funny.

I've tried looking at lots of indie music, but alas, I have no luck.

I may sound ignorant, but I really do like a wide variety of music, even broadway, jazz, some classical, electronica (not techno), classic rock, metal, and 80s-early 90s hip hop.

So far the only music I've liked in recent memory was Filter's The Amalgamut. Its really one of the best put together albums, somthing to listen to from start to finish. Their sound keeps waving in and out of pop rock and metal.

I also saw Aida on broadway last summer, which really gave me a new respect for Disney. This musical wasn't somthing they just threw together for money, its actually highly entertaining and beautifully staged. Sure, it has a cliched storyline, but who doesn't like a little Elton John?

I also enjoyed Queens of the Stoneage for putting together an album thats so raw its practically bleeding. All riffs, no hesitation.

I'm still 50/50 on Zwan.

Well, that's my opinion of the past year. What did everyone else like/dislike?

I agree, music nowadays is kinda crappy...I'm not a real out-there listener either, pretty generic really. My CDs are usually movie soundtracks...so those aren't even that strange...I've been reverting back to my youth, though...which is 80s -ha ha, yeah, I know...but my parent's are older so my reach goes back to the 20s...so I love having internet to download all my obscure faves that are only on LPs nowadays... /forums/images/icons/tongue.gif

My room-mate is a DJ and he's got all these old Acid House records from the early nineties and I've recently been going through the dusty archives and giving some of them a spin.

I think there was a point when raves changed from being super-hardcore, underground almost tribal events completely wedded to progressive idealism to being big business and you can hear that change in the music. A whole different industry sprung up around House which forced it to conform to the established methods of the music and entertainment business.

At least, that's the conclusion I've come to after spending all week reviewing nearly a decade of "electronica."

So I put together a set of un-[censored]-believable hard-core House and more familiar, but equally powerful, pop.

1) Heaven Will Come - The Space Brothers
2) Papua New Guinea - Future Sound of London
3) New Years Day - U2
4) Sprinkling Petals Into Hell - Love and Hate
5)Caliente - Voice of the Underground
6) Warrior (The Art of Fighting Without Fighting Mix)-M.C. Wildski
7) Metropolis - Metropolis
8) Promised Land - NRG (prod. Neil Rumney, Chill Records)
9) Halleluja Chorus - Guru Josh
10) There Is No Law (rap edit featuring Mr. Mysterious)-Messiah
11)Peace Train - Ten Thousand Maniacs (written by Cat Stevens)

I actually played that last one twice.

Wow, I can't remember the last time I heard some of those, esp. Space Bros. You really only do hear half that stuff at clubs or some college radio. I like how New Year's Day is thrown in there, that's one of U2's best. It has a very etheral sounding melody at points.
Reminds me of this industrial version of Elenor Rigby that I heard played at a club once, it was a cover that just seemed right, kept enough momentum to dance to. Too bad I never found an mp3 of it.

I really enjoy Perfect Pitch. In fact, I use your picks to find something new to listen to. Radio in my area has the "57 channels and nothing on" problem.

When I was still in college I could research new bands and check out the local scene. Now the time is shorter, and I am not devoting 12 hours a day to music. Bummer /forums/images/icons/wink.gif

Keep up the good work!

First, I am glad to see the boards are back up and that the crew of MPS is back posting. This is the best entertainment site on the web and it had the best forum (except for the handful of twits who ruined it for everyone).

Anyway, great work on the column and I read it to keep up on the music scene. While some of your choices are not my cup of tea I still have found some gems. Keep at it and thanks for the music.

Good comments all around. We'll see how this year fares. I'm sort of intrigued by the White Stripes record but am still wary of that band.
new trail of dead EP is pretty good. I'm still trying to figure out if it actually came out or not yesterday. Its for sale on Amazon but PR said May.
Once i figure it out I'll review it in my column.

Also last night I saw Queens of the Stone Age at the House of Blues in Chicago. It was a free radio show (Q101) and my girlfriend won us tickets by calling in. How great is she?
It was awesome. I Love that band. I won't be reviewing the show cause i was enjoying alcohol to an extreme extent. I need a few bands I can just go and enjoy watching and queens is one of them.

I know how you feel about the White Stripes
For some reason Im expecting them to crash and burn within the next year or two
Don't know why, just a feeling...
It's a pity you can only concentrate on the American music scene as many of the european bands at the moment are moving forward alot quicker

I disagree with your comment about 2003 being a horrible year for music or whatnot.

It can't be a bad year when a new Radiohead release is out (damn good CD, by the way).

About the Trail of Dead EP, it came out yesterday. For sure. I have a copy (duh).

And about The White Stripes, their new album is incredible. It is my opinion they are one of the only, if not the only of the "nu-garage trendy bands or whatever you prefer to call them" that have any staying power. Look beyond the gimmick if you must.

in repose to all you messages i wish to hear you thoughs on old school music such as james brown, robert pamler, inxs and sir mix a lot the latter one i hope you'll agree that he worte the best song of all time 'baby got back'.
and im sure that you would agree that some bands keep too much good sh#t in the America market such as the white stripes, green day and others we see nothing of the good sh#t apart from the g#y teen music such as justin timmy lake and britney spears.
its enough to make a man cry.

I've been in music limbo for the past couple of years, nothing is really grabing me right now. Still waiting for the next 'revoloution' I guess. I've been addicted to Flogging Molly for the past month since I saw them with the Bosstones so that's all I'm listening to anymore.

Since MTV is always telling the damn kids what to listen to, they might as well be nice to the rest of America and play some hard alternative rock. I've begun listening to the grunge and hard rock of the 90's again and its seems a little tamer today but its pretty enjoyable.

Classic music? For really old music, I'd have to go with Jim Croce. He's just so damn enjoyable for mellow music.
Otherwise, The Who, Pink Floyd, Bowie, Billy Joel, U2, and The Kinks.

"Baby got back"? Everyone knows that song. For real old hip-hop, you gotta go with 'Mama said knock you out', when LL Cool J was only about 17 years old.

Sean_Cauley

Actually, "Mama Said Knock You Out" is about the same age as "Baby Got Back" (maybe a year earlier). It was on the album of the same name, released in late 1990, with the song gaining popularity in 1991. For real early teenage LL, check out the "My Radio" scene in Krush Groove. It's from long before he ever thought of having muscles, and it's funny to see a skinny Cool James in his trademark Kangol hat.

There was a lot of good hip-hop around the turn of the nineties, most of it very danceable: MC Hammer (laugh all you want now, but there's a reason it was so popular), Digital Underground, YounG MC, and the early works of De La Soul, Leaders of the New School (which included Busta Rhymes) and A Tribe Called Quest. This stuff, added to the politically-charged music of Public Enemy and Boogie Down Productions, and the birth of "gangsta" happening with N.W.A., made for a truly exciting time in hip-hop, and its real explosion into the mainstream (read: the walkmans of white suburban kids).

For a good throwback vibe from a current hip-hop group, check out the albums by Jurassic 5. The MCs harmonize, and the two DJs work in and out of each other. Highly recommended.

I listen to all sorts of stuff, I like feelgood music, feel bad music but not the downright "I am a rebellious teenager and life sucks" stuff but more like "oh, thats terrible and wouldn't really wish that on anyone" I hate manufactured stuff, I prefer instrumental stuff usually but I like soundtracks to films, also game soundtracks when they get the full blown orchestral treatment or a remix. And I like lyrics where they can mean a multitude of things and dont really realise it. Oh and I also like some 80's stuff too like Electric Light Orchestra, Maiden, Priest and Abba. /forums/images/icons/tongue.gif

For some good hip hop Check out Killer Mike's Monster. Non of that happy radio crap. He's got a couple of rock inspired songs on there too. He's down with Outkast and you can't go wrong with anything from their camp. They're constantly trying to expand and elevate Hip-Hop unlike the popular rappers that just keep doing the same thing because it sells.

Concerning the ancient 'Elevation' album: I reffered to them as 'classics', not oldies. The Rolling Stones are still doing concerts, but since their work goes back so many years, I refer to them as classics. Its the same case with U2.

For the corrections on LL Cool J: you really know your stuff! I don't claim to be a Def-Jam historian, but I always thought that 'Mama' was one of LL's first.

To a better memory: thanks for the reminder of ELO. Most of my friends hate them for some reason, but they're still one of my favorites. They're great for variety, from the rockin' (Ma Ma Ma Belle) to the oddly charming (Telephone Line). They did justice with synths long before the 80's used the instrument for pure evil (Human League anyone?).

OK let me reply to some stuff

Trail of Dead will be reviewed next week. Found out the release info as well.

Kyuss? Did someone say Kyuss? I loved Kyuss. Still Do. Queens of the stone age doesn't have the heavy metal thunder of Kyuss but I like the songwriting a lot better. Homme is just the most underrated guitarist of the last decade. Demon Cleaner: ever hear Tool cover it? It's amazing.

Radiohead: Supposedly the radiohead stuff that leaked is not the finished product. I am not a fan of people downloading these things. I dont think its what the artist intended and geeze just have some patience.

I was commenting to my girlfriend the other day, what was wrong with Inxs and Duran Duran? Rock bands that wrote the best pop songs ever? You dont need to be a "pop" band to write pop songs. Inxs was fantastic. And I didn't mind N Sync's Bye Bye Bye. Well written pop song. or some Aguilera stuff is decent pop as well. But if you heard a "rock" band do a pop song these days it would be so cheesy. All American Rejects. oh did i say that?

Just bought the new White Stripes album a few days ago. It's one of the best albums I've heard in a long, long time. It's one of those albums you want to tell everyone to go out and buy, and, conversely, that you also want to keep all to yourself. They're the real deal.

I wasn't all that impressed with the stripes. I put the hives, the vines, and the white stripes into one random playlist and could never tell the difference.

The last album I bought was the 2 Skinnee J's, an incredibly talented and fairly underground band on the east coast. Get their album while it's hot, they've run out of money and will be going on hiatus (chalk it up to record company ass-raping).

But in the realm of more known bands, I picked up Audioslave not too long ago, and while it's taken some time to grow on me, I give it a hearty thumbs up. If zach's original stuff is as good as his latest: March of Death (go to www.marchofdeath.com (http://www.marchofdeath.com) for free DL), the loss of RATM will be much easier to bear.

I think that the Stripes have been unfairly lumped in with the whole "garage band" movement. Some of my friends had similar comments to yours, but after I played Elephant (the new album) for them they came away with an entirely different perspective. Everyone I've played it for has come away saying that it sounds like something else. Some have heard shades of everything from Led Zeppelin, the Kinks, to the Rolling Stones. Maybe you should give them a second look.

Anyone else care to voice their opinion on the White Stripes?

I agree with your take on Audioslave. All these nu-metal jag-offs oughta take a lesson from Cornell and learn how to really scream. Morello's guitar was phenomanal as well. Thanks for the heads up on Zach's new project. I hadn't heard about it. We definetly need a Zach De La Rocha in these more "patriotic" times.

Today's music sucks. Well, some stuff, like Audioslave, QOTSA... yeah, that music is pretty good. I look forward to the new Radiohead album. As far as the music that I listen to goes, pure indie. As far as something revolutionary, nothing. One thing's for sure, it ain't that punk-pop crap...

Notch me up as one of the impatient people. When I see a webpage with an enitre album from one of my favorite bands that I won't be able to hear anywhere for three months just sitting there for listening to restraint is gonna remain one of those abstract ideas limited to people better then me. But what of these rumours that its not the finished product? Either way, what's up now sounds pretty great, I can't wait to buy the album when it comes out.

And I'll just toss in Yoshimo Battles the Pink Robots, my favorite album from last year that I'm still digging the hell out of, someday I'll have 4 CD players so I can completely absorb what The Flaming lips were doing with Zaireeka. But you gotta love bands like Blur, Flaming Lips, Radiohead (and I'm sure bunches of other guys that I just haven't gotten around to yet), if for no other reason than just being able to be musical and creative enough to come out with new albums that makes their last albums obsolete.
