My pull list in no particular order:
Daredevil

Astonishing X-Men
Green Arrow
Gotham Central
100 Bullets
Powers
Fables
Y: The Last Man
Tales of the Vampires

[/ QUOTE ]

I don't think you are ever meant to "grow out" of reading comics, althought i do believe that your preferences change over time. While a person might have started out reading and Archie and Jughead or Richie Rich comic, usually they move on to some other genre by their teenage year, and yet another genre by the time they are college age.

Now on to my current fav's:
Daredevil
Fables
Hellblazer
JSA (it's the one link I have left to Starman - however flimsy and fragile that link may be)
the Identity Crisis mini (although, is sort of wish this were an Elseworlds story)

Things i'm just getting started or re-started on
Ex-Machina
the Ron Marz Green Lantern
Swamp Thing

Things i'm looking forward to:
I Can't Believe it's not the Justice League (or in fact any soon to be cancelled book by Keith Giffen)

I agree. Comics are a medium just like books, movies and television. You tastes in the kinds you enjoy will change. One of my friends thinks that reading comics is a sign of immaturity because she thinks all comics are like the Batman 60s televison show. She thinks the dialogue is all Bang! Pow!

On a happier note, I sat and got caught up on the current Superman/Batman storyline with Supergirl. Wow! I highly recommend. You can't convince me that there is anything more fun than Batman teasing Superman and vice versa. "Why don't you go play with your dog, Clark?"

Dave,

Keith is not having anything more to do with DC concerning their superheroes. However, he does have a new book coming out in November called Hero Squared (http://www.comicbookresources.com/news/newsitem.cgi?id=3901) through Atomeka. Looks real good and real funny. /forums/images/icons/grin.gif

Dave
08-04-2004, 01:38 PM
Yeah, i've heard that. It was one of the reasons i wish Identity Crisis was an Elseworld book. Lets face it, DC has cancelled plenty of Giffen books in the past couple of years, so this isn't much of a loss i guess. I'm more partial to his non-superhero (or at least non-mainsteam hero) books. Vext was a riot. it was cancelled far too soon. And i was digging "Zodiac" too, but DC decided to publish it under the main DC banner instead of Vertigo where it belonged. sigh.

I will have Hero Squared on the ol' pull list though.

Why are people open-minded about so many other things but when it comes to comics, they fall back on the crutch that comics are for kids? My brother is very similar because when I mention comics, he always says that they are really repressed homoerotic latencies. Or maybe he does that just to push my buttons.

FG, did you read the first arc with McGuinness? There's some good quotes there, too.

[/ QUOTE ] Sadly, I jumped off the wagon not long after my Archie days. I got into some superhero comics, but mainly because they were given to me. I never sought out too many superhero comics. Now I am (very) sadly intimidated by the comic book shop in town. It seems very elitist. Shit is hard to find, kind of disorganized, I can't tell what is new and what isn't. I have tried to jump back on the wagon, but I am relatively clueless where to begin.

jj,

Sorry that you feel that way about the shops. Those people who are in the stores give off the elitist attitude because they've been laughed at for a long time for liking comics. Then, they get pissed at new people who start reading comics because they feel like that the newies haven't somehow earned their right to read comics. They're also the ones who complain the loudest about disrespect towards comics because that no one appreciates them. It's a very sad downward spiral.

With that mini-rant out of the way, I would be more than happy to offer my services as the Shoot's resident comic book columnist newbie, if you want to get back into the fold. /forums/images/icons/grin.gif

...Let's say you get past your college years, into your 30s and 40s... Would it still be cool to have a stash of Spidey comics? I'm not so sure, though Schulz and his Penuts cartoons, he was about 80 when he retired (I know he's not really a comic book artist, but he was the only Realy Old cartoonist I could think of).

Maybe comics are cool forever?

My friend (and I use that term very loosely), while I do not insult people without provocation, that last post basically told me that a small village somewhere is missing their local idiot. For example, I am currently well within those age parameters of which you spoke of and not only do I have a stash of Spidey comics but also of X-Men, Batman, Superman, and many others.

So, while you're still trying to imagine that you’ll reach that advance age, some of us are already there. To claim comics are not cool after a certain age is asinine and just plain stupid. Next time, try to think before posting.

RobinHoodDaffy

Man, I was getting ready to rip you a new one, but the last two posts slowed me down a bit. Just because I was born in the early seventies doesn't mean I don't love the things I loved in the earlier part of my life. Hell, every time I wear one of my Spider-Man shirts, people of all ages have to comment. If stories are good then the tales of heroics are timeless. Why is it o.k. for someone who is in his\her thirties to read a "Pern" book or even "Lord of the Rings" but no an "Amazing Spider-Man". It is all good vs. evil. It is all a modern myth. I didn't give up my imagination and enjoyment of fun, just because I am old enough that my insurance rates went down.

I dig... dug SCUD. Also on the "gone too soon" list is MAJOR BUMMER. So damn funny.

Most of my faves have been covered, I think. I don't recall seeing THE LOSERS or HUMAN TARGET, but man I hope they go on forever.

As for Identity Crisis, why don't they just release the Justice League book with a note that those events take place before IC? Sure, seeing Sue in there would be pretty unsettling (especially after issue 2) but it could still be a good read.

Dave
08-05-2004, 05:42 PM
I'm sure that's what they will do, but my concern isn't really that Mini, but the effect that IC will have on the characters after it's done.

straight2video

Very true, but I do think that it depends on the persons interests when they reach their 30's and 40's. Like BrittDaShit, he is in his 30's 40's and his interests have not changed, but other people might "outgrow" comics or find them childish (the idiots) and give up on comics...it all depends on the person.

They may also grow out of watching televison or going to the movies. Comics is a medium just like the others. Cartoon were originally intended for adults and never meant for children, but that's what they became and now with Family Guy, South Park, Adult Swims's whole line up, etc. They are more geared towards adults.

What's your point exactly?
