Well, what else would they be other than rock?
Jason_Brown
07-22-2004, 12:32 PM
Scissors?
I think the real question should be: "What type of rock are they?"
"Good ol' rock, nothing beats Rock"
woo_wannabe
07-22-2004, 08:15 PM
They're pop rock for sure.
winky465

Originally, they were Hair Metal. As the 90's came around, they were ahead of the backlash (somewhat) and became Rock. Now, they're probably considered Pop.
winky465
07-22-2004, 09:11 PM
why did u hav to say that no there still partly rock
PftLBritt
07-22-2004, 09:17 PM
C'mon, they're barely have a foot in the proverbial rock pool. Groups like QotSA, Velvet Revolver and even the reappearance of VH are really Rock.
woo_wannabe
07-22-2004, 09:20 PM
Those bands aren't really rock. I reckon they fall into the category of alternative, not rock. Bon Jovi fits into rock better than those bands do.
winky465
07-22-2004, 09:21 PM
yeah thats true im just going to give up the idea tht bj is rock im going to stop lying to myself and face the truth
PftLBritt
07-22-2004, 09:28 PM
I'll agree with QotSA. But Revolver & Van Halen/Hagar are basic rock bands. If you listen to Bounce by Bon Jovi, ther are some rock tunes but overall, they're leaning more towards pop.
woo_wannabe
07-22-2004, 09:46 PM
Yeah I agree. Bands like then have become extremely commercialised lately and have lost their original sound, all thanks to dickheads who just want to make money off them. Shame shame shame. /forums/images/icons/mad.gif

To me, Bon Jovi has always been rock/pop. They were never metal. In those days, metal was Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, etc.
PftLBritt
07-22-2004, 09:51 PM
I should've said Hair Metal since they basically defined the genre.
ratm1966
07-22-2004, 09:54 PM
You said Hair Metal in your earlier post, I just never considered that metal of any type. Just a big hair Rock/Pop band.

Sorry, it been a long day and I'm putting off the Shoot column due to writer's block. I understand your distain for lumping in non-traditional groups into Metal but when they broke, there was no real rock; just Classic '60-'70 Rock. Maybe VH but no real rockers in the mid to late 80's. Their music (Farenheit & Slippery) was more of the Metal side than what was Rock.
ratm1966
07-22-2004, 10:12 PM
Yeah, I guess a few of the songs could be considered that, but for the most part, I am not sure. Maybe if they had some harder lyrics to go with the music, I would agree more, but to me, their lyrics seemed more in tune with chick songs than being hard rock/metal.
I guess what I am trying to say is, their lyrics didn't match the music. They had a hard rockin sound, then they opened their mouths and ruined it.
winky465
07-22-2004, 10:14 PM
I would agree with you ,and some of the songs sound repetitive, but there still good well i think they are
PftLBritt
07-22-2004, 10:24 PM
Would you consider them a more successful White Lion?
Scratch that. Now that I think of it, Jovi's & Def Leppard's career paths are very similar, don't cha think?
ratm1966
07-22-2004, 10:27 PM
Yes, I can agree with that. However, Def Lepperd did have more songs with harder lyrics to go with their harder music. I still wouldn't class them as metal though. Maybe Hard Rock though.
PftLBritt
07-22-2004, 10:36 PM
Well, Lep's first three records (Sorry, it still hard to call them CDs) had hard lyrics. But Hysteria? "Love Bits"? "Animal"? "Hysteria"? "Two Steps Behind"? Although I think that Lep had to change their style to accomodate Rick, they still started turning the corner into the pop realm when Hair Metal/Rock came into being. And don't get me started on Adrenalize.
ratm1966
07-22-2004, 10:45 PM
Yeah, they definitely went the way of Pop. I actually bought the "X" cd in the hopes they might have gone back to their Hard Rock roots. But alas, I was disappointed. It is bad when the closest song to Hard Rock on the album is a song called "Cry".
PftLBritt
07-22-2004, 10:54 PM
Yup, I was snookered as well since I really enjoyed Euphoria and I should've known by looking at X's credits that they were self-producing this one and Mutt was out of the picture. No Mutt = Bad CD.
ratm1966
07-22-2004, 11:00 PM
In all actuality, I thought "X" was just about equal to a Bryan Adams CD. Damn, that just sent shivers through my body. To actually think that Def Leppard is now comparable to Bryan Adams.
PftLBritt
07-22-2004, 11:07 PM
LOL. Another "rocker" who went soft in the 90's. I loved "Like a Knife", "Reckless" and "Into The Fire" but then came "Everything I Do". You might have well given him a lifetime subscription to Wuss Monthly. Total waste.

Yeah, Pop music seemed to poison a lot of hard rockin' souls. Pop is to music like dog shit is to my shoe.....stuck on the bottom.

Ahh Bon Jovi.
As I was telling RATM the other night (after the third Bon Jovi song in a 30 min. period came on) I think one of two things has happened to me since I moved to Texas:
1) My big hair and 85 IROC are actually buried FM transmitters that are able to locate hair bands and instantly make them come on the radio or on the bar jukebox; or
2) People are really digging Bon Jovi down here
Or maybe it's because I walk these streets, a loaded six string on my back. Tough call.
I love my cheezy rock in small doses, but I don't consider it quality. Bad is fun sometimes, hence why fast food is still around. Maybe Tom has the best analogy:
Bon Jovi is to Rock what Taco Bell is to Mexican.

A friend of mine used to think they sang, "On a stale horse I ride..."
His mind reacts like spell check when it encounters an unknown, which is to say he doesn't use context to determine the variable, just spelling, or in this case, the sound of the word. Stale horse? What could that possibly mean?
But I agree with you about bad things. As much as I profess to hate anything in the entertainment world, I usually enjoy hating it on some level, sometimes to the point where it's very existence provides a measure of comfort and sense of security.

While Bon Jovi is somewhat cheesy, there are others (in no particular order):
<ul type="square">
E'Nuff Z'Nuff
Poison
David Lee Roth's solo work
aforementioned White Lion
Grim Reaper
Yngwie Malmsteen (Odessey CD only)
Bulletboys
Warrant
Anything by Desmond Child
Europe
Stryper
[/list]
If you can't tell, I'm a purveyor of all metal that is cheesy. Scary, isn't it?
DarthMaulRat
07-23-2004, 09:39 PM
Bon Jovi certainly fits cheesy, because he was on the wave of rock that realized it couldn't take itself too seriously (thank you Spinal Tap). But some of the bands like Pantera or (to a lesser extent) Poison thought they were totally serious at one point, so while they are cheesy now, they weren't at the time.
Frankly, its hard to narrow a single piece of music down to one genre, no matter how many genres we have. Just looking at my rock categories on Media player I have:
Classic Rock
Pop Rock
Rock
Rock & Roll
Alternative Rock
Symphonic Rock
Hard Rock
Metal (okay, doesn't have the word rock in it)
Punk Rock
Even with those, I still have problems classifying half of my music. I tried sticking U2's Discotheque into a category a few days ago and got stuck. Is it Alternative music, Alternative Rock, Electronica, Funk? It has characteristics of each but can't really be said to be more of one genre than the other.

Sorry this is a few days old, but I haven't been here to join in. I have thought for years that the term "Hair Metal" was a misnomer. It was such a all incompassing term that came to mean all Rock for a time. Pop has now become a dirty word that means hollow overproduced trite. Personally I want the term back! The Beatles were pop. The Rolling Stones were pop. I would call Bon Jovi pop. Not that they are the same caliber as The Stones or The Beatles, mind you but rock that is popular and fairly basic.
As far as cheesy rock/metal bands go, you left out
-Faster Pussycat
-Babylon A.D.
-L.A. Guns
-Jetboy
-Brittney Fox
-Cinderella
-Winger
-Vixen
-Mammoth
-White Skull
-Death Angel

I just think that when the metal bands first started getting that big hair, and were getting the chicks, a lot of groups started going big hair. Because of this, they were lumped into the "Hair Metal" category even though they were Pop/Rock.
