Danny Carey (http://www.dannycarey.org/page2.html) puts it down. Watch the guys mechanics. He is truely one of greats. Just click on the throwing stars or what ever they are and you'll see the clips. They're short but sweet. I think he does the solo of 46 and 2 on the last one.

Sorry, I just checked the link and realized that it doesn't take you where I wanted it to. Go to philosophy, then education, then cyberclinic then see first post... Sorry again about the link mess up.

Dude, thanks for posting this. I check Danny's site, but haven't prodded around in a while. I hope they have some stuff like this on their DVD.

So do I he is one of my favorite drummers. It has to say something when out of the 40 some odd tracks they've made almost 20% of them are just Danny and Maynard throwing down. Between Maynards lyrics and Dannys Mechanics they don't have to try too hard.

I agree about Danny. He and Matt Cameron are just amazing to watch. So is Carter Beauford. Danny is so precise and technical. His phrasing and use of polyrhythm both blow my mind. The thing I think is so cool about him is that everything he does on the album is what he does live. You could say that's boring, but when it's as technical and challenging as what he lays down for Tool, you just have to respect it. I've seen them 4 times and it's always awesome. When Danny was doing the 10 minute solo before Sober (what became "Merkaba" on Salival) while they were touring Ænima, it had to be one of the coolest live music experiences I've had, second only to the absolute marathon session Pearl Jam puts on at their shows.
Personally, I think Tool is one of those groups you can sit and awe each individual piece as well as the whole. They are all virtuosos. It's great because the music is so dense it can sound different each time you hear it. I think the whole would crumble without the specific parts. I'm biased though -- a lot of what I learned on guitar came from playing Adam's riffs.

Took the words right out of my mouth. Danny is one of those drummers that I can listen to over and over again and just be stupefied. He is every bands dream for a drummer.
The thing that makes Tool with out a doubt my favorite band is just what you said. They have to be one of the only if no the only band I've ever known to be so completely off beat and make it work. Not to mention you have Maynard who's lyrics are just mind blowing. He writes shit that you would never think you could put in a song. I mean half the time HE doesn’t even know what he's talking about when he starts but he makes it work. Not to mention his dad being a minister makes it easy for him to just spit out stuff about the bible cause he literally knows it off the top of his head. Combine that with some of the best musicians around and of course you have Tool the greatest band in my opinion.
However, this is the man when it comes to a set. (http://www.rush.com/php/home.php?f=1)
