Shiny News (http://www.fireflymovie.com/news.html)

One of my friends has seen the poster and is most likely going to be doing the official movie site. My other friend has been working out at the same gym Adam Baldwin has been going to. Apparently, Angel was pretty rough on him and he's been trying to heal up to do this movie.

So, happy.

From the man himself:

Well, sports fans, it's official. The movie is shot. Done. And I couldn't be happier to be through with it. No more of that exciting, vibrant set, that warm camaraderie, that creative stimulus, free donuts... Excuse me. I have something in my eye... free donuts...

Oh, there's things I'll miss. But there's definitely things I WON'T miss.
In no particular order:

1) Fillion. People who are prettier than me are not supposed to be funnier than me. I think it's a guild thing. And that whole 'gracious and professional' thing got old on day ONE, you know what I mean?

2) Cinematographer Jack Green. This guy lights stuff ALL THE TIME. Seriously, like eighty-three percent of the shots had light in them. He totally didn't get my "Just Like Radio" concept for the film.

3) The incessant meddling of the studio: where was it? We waited and waited, what, are they all too busy and important to take the time to ruin my little film? This is Hollywood, people. Learn our ways and customs while you're here. Sheesh.

Just a taste of the Hell I've been through. And being surrounded by beautiful women, and, let's face it, beautiful men, all of whom get along, work hard and play their characters with such ease and nuance it's clear they were born for the roles -- who needs that?

But no matter how much I suffer for my art, it's worth it. 'Cause come April 22nd I think we'll be bringing you an exciting film that's a powerful statement about the right to be free. Which is not as cool as my original statement about the right to tasty garlic mussels in a cilantro broth, but the freedom thing's okay too. The editing started this week, and after just a first cut I can safely say this will be the greatest film since whatever film comes out right before it. And I'm not backing down from that.

Thanks for your support. And I mean that more literally than people usually do -- Coming back from the Chicago Con and telling people there was a Serenity booth put up and run entirely by fans... you should have seen their faces. Hell, you should have seen mine. But not too close. And not before, like, 10:00 -- maybe 11:00 a.m. And maybe sort of from the side. The back-ish part of the side. You should have seen my hair.

Be well. Good things are coming.

Cilantro!

Firefly was a Joss Whedon show that is basically a space western. It takes place in the future where Earth was destroyed and only two cultures survived american and chinese so their language and customs are a blurr of the two.

All major corporations have merged into one and merged with the government known as the alliance. There was a rebellion against the Alliance lead by a group called the Browncoats which was lost at the battle of Serenity.

Since then different planets have been terraformed to support life. There are no aliens only misplaced humans. Since a lot of these planets are recently made habitable they reseamble the old west and the manifest destiny era.

The series follows a firefly class vessel called "Serenity" which is captained my Malcolm Reynolds who fought against tha alliance and now is basically a smuggler and ship for hire. He employs his former war buddy and her husband who is the pilot, a thug and a mechanic. They also have a doctor and sister, a licensed prostitute and a preacher who are along for the ride. The doctor and her sister have warrents against them.

There were 13 episodes, but only 6 aired and aired out of order which made things difficult to follow and was eventually killed. The DVDs are available now and the movie will be out in April which picks the story up 2 years after the last episode.

I'm going to be doing a column on firefly when the movie gets closer.

Wow! I have no idea how this movie will be but it must suck! I completely wash my hands off it all! Joss Whedon has sold out and is all about the money while making it up as he goes! Having never seen any of the shows I can tell you all for certain that the cgi looks like shit and that the actors are out of their element!

I will of course post about this movie 12,000 times over the next few years and watch it over and over so I can pick apart everything I hate about it.

In lieu of any cool pictures, a message from the hero of Canton himself:

So, I'm walking back from Starbuck's today and guess who comes riding up on his bicycle: No... not John Mellencamp. JOSS, it was Joss.

So he says, " I was going to call you today" and I says, "About the postponement?"
"Yeah, I figured if anyone would already know it would be Adam, MR. ONLINE GUY" So he proceeds to tell me that this will be a blessing in disguise and the studio is really happy with the film and wanted more time to gear up a really kick-a$$ marketing SCHEME. Which they will.

Then we chit-chatted for a while about family and stuff... Caterpillars... the length of the show... the fact that Jayne is really cool... and funny... and strong looking.... and "Oh, by the way," he asks, "are you guys free next thursday for a screening?"

So I says, "Hmmmmm I'll check my schedule but I think perhaps maybe it will be a possibility that I will attempt to squeeze it in." What's that guy's name again? Oh yeah... Joss. The boss. AKA G-d.

So anyway guys, this is good news, let's take it as GOOD NEWS. It felt rushed to me anyway. Like the series did. Now we have plenty of time for all of those summer-esque trailers and OSCAR (trademark) considerations.

Love and Serenity Always,

A.B.
"

Whilst I have all your attention, also, I'd like to point out to all those people bombarding Universal complaining and petitioning: Universal have given Joss $50,000,000 for Serenity. In total, it's going to cost them a lot more with advertising.

That's a huge commitment they didn't need to make.

They are delaying the release as it makes business sense for them: They should have with Chronicles of Riddick, for example, as it was a busy time, but chose not to: it got buried. They didn't make the money they wanted from it.

Those complaining, petitioning and (planning to) advertise in magazine will dent things.

A bit overly grandiose and insanely optimistic with that Oscar mention, but hey, Joss has done it before. Ok, maybe more then just a bit.

Razorback
11-23-2004, 09:11 PM
Well, Oscar consideration for SFX and sound, perhaps. Even one Oscar nomination can increase your DVD sales. /forums/images/icons/smile.gif

I remember when I saw Reindeer Games (it was called something else at that time) they told us that some scenes were not finished and that the music and some of the edit had not been finished.

I was very excited when I was asked to stay after the movie to be asked questions with about a dozen other people. When they asked what didn't work I raised my hand and ripped into the ending. I told them the twists didn't work and that they would get ripped to shreads if they released the movie that way,

EVERY OTHER DUMBASS said the twists were great. I spoke up a few times until the lady asking the questions started waving me off. They just didn't want to hear it. The movie bombed and was blasted for its twists. They actually had a really good movie until the last 15 minutes. Stupid.

After that, I was able to ignore bad music and effects. I only watch for the edit. /forums/images/icons/smile.gif

Once again, no pictures. Here instead, a glowing appraisal of the show by one of the most popular science fiction writers around, Orson Scott Card:

It only lasted one year on FOX, but Firefly was, in my opinion, the best space-opera sci-fi series ever on television, and you can get the whole season now on DVD.

I was stunned by the stupidity of the bad reviews this series got. I suppose if you think television should be Desperate Housewives or Felicity or some other thing that passes for "edgy", Firefly won't look good to you.

But the writing is witty, just a little tongue-in-cheek, and keenly aware of what good science fiction is supposed to be.

Though I could make a good case for Firefly being the best western on television since Maverick.

It's fun even as it's tense, and it's smart all the time. So smart that some reviewers have no clue what they're seeing.

The actors are wonderful, though a couple of characters can be annoying, especially at first (couldn't Jewel Staite have occasionally stopped smiling idiotically during the early episodes?).

Adam Baldwin, whose career began in the great high school movie My Bodyguard back in 1980 finally has the role of his career.

Gina Torres, a survivor of the Matrix sequels, is boldly credible as soldier-of-fortune Zoe; Morena Baccarin is luminous as the "companion" (i.e., really expensive prostititute) Inara Serra; and Alan Tudyk, a hit in A Knight's Tale, is equally charming as the pilot, Wash.

Delightful as Ron Glass was on Barney Miller and The New Odd Couple, I think he's got his best role here as the enigmatic preacher. While Sean Maher has recovered from the debacle of the remake of Brian's Song to play a truly complicated (and really cute, my wife tell me,) character.

And Nathan Fillion rises out of nowhere - small forgettable parts where he was little more than a pretty face - to show that he has the strength to carry a TV series.

They're making a movie called Serenity, to be released next September, and the whole cast will appear in it. Count on it getting bad reviews; go anyway. And prepare for it by buying or renting the Firefly DVDs.

Hope that last part about getting bad reviews doesn't come true.

So a fella can hold out just so long. I have heard you people chanting "Firefly" "Serenity" "Joss" for so long I just took it in as part of the background of this site, having missed out on this and all other Whedon shows whilst they aired.
So I am at the local Hollywood Video picking up a flick for my other half and myself, turn around into the T.V. section (an ever-growing section at this store, which by the way is two stories tall with over 10,000 titles. I love my Hollywood) then I see a series of DVD's foolishly labled with the Televison section sticker over the title of the show. Well let's see what that sucker is...."Oh, look dear it is that "Firefly" show, the one that all those folks talk about on the message board. No don't roll your eyes, yes I am aware that I talk about them like they are friends, they are friends, I just haven't met them face to face. Well I don't care if you think I am silly I am gonna rent it, after all I have two days off alone while you work, I wanna see if it lives up to the hype."

Jayne, of course, comes with Vera as well as other weapons. *drool* They said they would be out 6 weeks before the movie. I tried to offer up bribes to get those now, but alas it didn't work. I also asked Dark Horse about the comic and they said closer to the movie as well.

Oops, I forgot the press release!!

Written by Joss Whedon and Brett Matthews, pencils by Will Conrad, colors by Laura Martin.

This fall Joss Whedon makes his big-screen debut as writer/director with Serenity, the big-budget feature follow-up to his cult-hit TV show Firefly‹the story of a ship full of mercenaries, outlaws, fugitives, and one law-abiding prostitute running across the fringes of space. Now Whedon pens a three issue miniseries based on the film with Brett Matthews, whose previous credits include Spider-Man specials with Daredevil and Wolverine, episodes of TV's Firefly, an Angel miniseries, and the animated Chronicles of Riddick feature Dark Fury.

The crew of Serenity once again find themselves broke and on the wrong side of a number of very large firearms, making the first issue a case study in how to mix intense, Whedon-style character interaction with cinematic action and violence. Artist Will Conrad and colorist Laura Martin paint a rough and wild world of adventure across a strange and dangerous universe. Each issue of this series features three covers, one for each member of the Serenity crew, drawn by the biggest names in comics. Issue #1 features Mal by John Cassaday, Inara by J.G. Jones, and Jayne by Bryan Hitch.

32 pages, $2.99, in stores on July 6.

Looks great... but the movie will suck just like the TV shows. /forums/images/icons/wink.gif

I am already working on my own "phantom edit" to make those sucky shows better. I am cutting out 90% of the dialogue in favor of action and hot chick sequences.

FanGirl

Don't you mean "firefly edit" because a "Phantom edit" means you are editing Phantom Menace which cutting out 90% of the dialogue in favor of action and hot chick sequences in Meance would be interesting.

You should wait until the flick comes out before you pass judgement. From what I've heard it'll be right up your alley. Whedon's decided to spice up the flick, with the addition of an overly precious toddler, and a new entirely cgi character named Junk-Junk Sabe. He'll be a loveable and adorable riff on American Indian stereotypes (in keeping with the Western theme you understand) perfect for basing an even more adorable plush toy on.

As for cutting the dialogue, from what I've heard it'll be one hundred percent shit. You'll love (http://server4.103092804.com/Release3/linkredirect.php?h=40052,404550,1115095982) it! ;)

Well, I was not a fan of the TV series and this trailer did nothing for me. I will probably see it only because of Fangirl. I am not expecting to hate it (I actually liked the last episode of the TV series) so we will see. Plus, I am more pumped up about HHGTTG and ROTS right now to care about a movie coming out in five months (hell, I don't even care about Batman right now).

I also think that if they want to grab Joe Average that they need to put out an amped up trailer. This wasn't all that exciting for non-fans. Even if the movie is boring (like the TV show) at least they can make a great trailer (even people who hate the Star Wars prequels agree that the trailers are good).

I see what the problem with the calendar is. When you enter your B-day on your profile, it does enter it into the calendar, but there is no way anyone can click on the notice and request a reminder.

Each b-day will actually have to be entered as an event, then people can go through them and request reminders for those b-days they want reminders for.

Although this should technically go in the good books thread, I have to HIGHLY recommend picking up "Finding Serenity." It's a series of essays revolving around Firefly. Some are serious and some are funny. The essay on historically where the idea of Reavers came from was awesome. The one comparing Firefly to the Tick was hysterical as was the faked letters from the network and the comparison to Enterprise. There was one praising Joss for creating strong female characters and one dissing him for not making them strong enough. I still have three or so to finish reading, but I can't recommend this enough.

Let me know if you get a chance!

No worries Matt1- I'm well versed in fandom etiquette. :)

Doesn't seem like anyone one in this thread has seen the movie yet, and there are others boards on which to discuss the actual movie, so I'm just gonna say it was AWESOME. It's not a perfect movie- they never are, but it was incredibly well done, and it was so amazing to see the crew back together again. And on the big screen to boot. They do not disappoint, and besides the characters and the plot being wonderful, the movie is very visually cool, too.

I have (and I actually saw it earlier than many) but I see no point in posting a review for a movie when there are tons already all over AICN.

so I'm just gonna say it was AWESOME

From a certain point of view...

They do not disappoint, and besides the characters and the plot being wonderful, the movie is very visually cool, too.

I think this movie may end up suffering in the same way that HHGTTG did in that the TV show fleshes out the characters well while the movie rushes past most of them. Plus, Mal is pretty one dimensional in the movie. Sure, it is the dimension that some love about him (or will love watching this movie) but I am not convinced that the general public will "get it."

I will have to see the movie again before I give a final rating. I liked the TV show more the second time around so I might like the movie more too. I find that second viewings can really swing my opinion one way or another (or reinforce it too).

I do hope that they reshoot the ending or re-edit it. And no more freakin' cowboy guitar riffs during the absolutely worst moments possible.

OK, I know I'm late to this party, but I'm converted. I've been watching the show on Sci-Fi.

When we met for brunch fangirl, I'd only watched "The Train Job". I didn't want to say it at the time, but I kept getting a "Friends in Space" vibe: A meh stroyline and too many beautiful young people. Not a good first episode for a newbie to watch I think.

But now that I've seen a few more episodes, the most recent being "Our Mrs. Reynolds", I haver to say that I'm hooked now! "Out of Gas" airs next, I think.

And I'm glad to see that Barney Miller alumni are getting work.

I am not going to go into a lot detail about the movie because if you have seen the show than I could end up giving something away. If you haven't seenthe show then a review would be pointless. I will say this , after this movie the world of Firefly will never be the same. Enjoy!!!

I am such an ass huh!!

Oh, I was watching a few interviews and Joss said( if the movie does well) he could bring back the show or do a few more movies or both.
SO, GO SEE THE MOVIE!!!! NO EXCUSES!!! DO IT NOW!!!
I think!!! That may be!!! the Most Exclamation points!!! Ever used!!! in a single post!!! in the history!!! of the shoot!!!

Holy fuck-balls batman!!! It!!! Must!!! be!!! Good!!!

!!!Love!!!,
!!!!Zen!!!!

Well, this viewing didn't change my opinion much. I liked parts of it a lot and disliked parts of it.... a lot. :)

My friend, who has never seen a Firefly episode, liked it. However, he had many of the same issues with it as I did. Liked the characters, the air battle on Mr. U's planet and the Reaver fight (liked it more than me), but also felt like it was kind of long in the tooth before those sequences.

He also thought the special effects were not up to par with movies being released today. We both thought that BSG's special effects are better.

I did, however, feel much more for the characters, now that I have enjoyed the TV show. I also think they changed somethings from the May release but I don't know what (can't tell, exactly).

Still hate the reaction after the crash.... even more now. I get it, but I don't like the way it was shot. Hopefully, when they make the second movie, they do it with about $100 million more. Also, the editing wasn't fixed at all. It jumps too much. The score feels more natural (maybe I am just getting used to it). The bad guy is pretty bad, in a good way. Though, I think I dig the bounty hunter in the last episode more.

All in all, I think I prefer the TV show. I know that it is not fair to compare a movie to more than a dozen TV episodes, but then this movie feels like a long TV episode.

Finally, Kaylee should be the main character in the next movie. She has the best line in the movie. :D Kaylee should kill Mal in the next movie and then take over! Every scene should be with Kaylee!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I couldn't agree with you more about Kaylee. Although, I like Mal, he has the next best lines, Jane has a bunch too.

The movie was very well written. You can tell that Joss put a lot of love into it.

I hope that they opt to do both the show and the movies. I liked both of them for what they were. A great movie and and freakin' awesome show.

We'll see how the movie does. Lucas got almost 150$ in tickets to Episode three from me. He didn't even need it. Joss will get about that, I am going to take everyone I know tonight. Then a few more on Sunday.

I have seen the movie enough times. The next time I see it will be on DVD.

Obviously, there is an extended cut in there.

Jane has a couple of good ones, but no one can touch Kaylee's line. That is classic. Hell, you don't even need to remember the line, just her reaction.

Yeah.... there are moments where the writing stands out (sometimes too much, since it is more poetic than the rest of the movie).

I hope that they opt to do both the show and the movies. I liked both of them for what they were. A great movie and and freakin' awesome show.

I would rather see them return to doing the show and then make a feature every now and then. I really dig the show more.

Yeah, sorry about that that was to Zens. For her snap about my !!!!!!! "points"!!!!

Hehe, Anyways Yeah I thought there were a couple of river's lines that made me want to scream, but most all of the movie was gold.

Like I said I would like to see them both come back but if I had to choose, the TV show would be first in my book as well.

I would say it was bronze. The show is silver. :) Gold? Maybe in "The Empire Strikes Serenity Back." ;)

I just got back from seeing it. Yes we actually got a film released the same time as you guys! I loved it. It was funny, sad, exciting and very cool. I found it a bit difficult to catch what they were saying at the start as they seemed to be talking hella fast but I caught up eventually! Will be interesting to see how it does in the box office. Wasn't too bad a crowd for a saturday afternoon here (prob half full). Joss Whedon was out here a couple of weeks ago doing a bunch of press and the trailer's been on TV quite a bit. Here's hoping they make enough to warrant another flick at least! Hell they made Deuce Bigalow 2 - there's gotta be hope - right?

Razorback
10-01-2005, 07:54 AM
Though, Deuce cost a lot less to make. :)

I am sure Serenity will make enough to deserve another movie (or, even better, a new TV show). We will see how the numbers look tomorrow. If it makes at least $5 million in the US (for Friday) then it is on its way to make a profit.

Everyone should see it at least twice, if they want to see more. Though, in about an hour we will find out what the day-one numbers are.... and if they are $20 million then they should stop shooting Wonder Woman and start shooting Serenity 2. ;)

Razorback

Serenity made an estimated $3,900,000 on Friday. This is not a good sign.... but Saturday could lift those numbers. Plus, if the fan base continues to support it past normal trends, and the movie has the same weekend next week then the franchise could be saved and more movies/shows guaranteed.

So, see it as many times next week. :)

So, my hormones are ranging this morning after seeing 'Serenity' so I am going to try to make my comments more interesting to read than me listing every scene Nathan, Adam and Sean (but I do have to say, that man has a sexy back..there I go) look hot in. So, here I go...

I thought the movie was great. It stuck to the same premise of the show which made it more enjoyable. I thought the action sequences were great which kept me on the edge of my seat. I thought the characters were enjoyable, though I kind of missed Wash's jokes and his dinosaurs. So pretty much, since it is late and my brain is not really there, the movie was great, enjoyable, lots of fun and I know I will be seeing it again this weekend. God, I love this movie and the eye candy was just great...

$10 million weekend is... no way to spin it, bad. Well, I am sure someone will spin it, but the fact that it dropped off on Saturday doesn't say much for the Browncoats support. I mean, come on! This is your movie. Do you or do you not want to see more?

THEN GO TO THE MOVIE OVER AND OVER AGAIN!

I shit on you all for not supporting your passion.

Should I say "Oh cool, you all didn't support the movie! Yay $10 million"?

Or, maybe the fan base is just smaller then they like to pretend. I don't know. Maybe the base is larger outside of the US. When is it being released in Europe?

But the first placed flick (Flightplan) only grossed $15m this weekend so maybe it just wasn't a big movie weekend altogether?

Yes, but Flightplan was in its second week. It made $24.5 million in its first weekend.... and that movie sucks!

Anyway, I made some comparisons (on another site) with other movies that came out this year that had a similar theatre count and opening weekend. 2005 releases that made $10 million in their first 3 days, with a theatre count of around 2,000, made between $20 million and $50 million. However, only Serenity (so far) had a drop-off on Saturday.

There is a silver lining, they all made about the same amount in the US as they did in the rest of the world. So, if Serenity pulls in $35 million in the US and another $35 million outside, that is a nice take of $70 million.... a profit of around $10 million (after marketing costs etc.). Then, consider that the DVD will probably sell a few million units, and you have yourself a money maker.

I enjoyed the movie very much and plan on seeing it multiple times. I'm sure you're all shocked. I thought the action sequences were great and Joss did a great job for a first time director. One thing that did make me giggle a little is I recognized the location of the place where they learn the thing about the thing (trying not to spoil). It's actually a high school. As a matter of fact, it's the high school used in Orange County. I was an extra on the OC movie and recognized it immediately.

As for it's opening weekend, it might not be as strong as everyone hoped, but I think it will be consistent. Scream opened with a similar weak numbers, but word of mouth helped keep it in the theaters for a long time making same amounts of money. I think the DVD sales will be through the roof as a lot of people who discovered the series on DVD will also discover the movie.

Razorback
10-03-2005, 06:52 PM
The numbers were slightly worse than estimated, and Serenity came in 3rd.

The word of mouth argument doesn't seem to hold much water since it is one of the few movies in modern history to LOSE money on Saturday. In the last five years, every movie that has lost money on Saturday has lost more than 50% the next week, and dropped 40% the third week.

I don't get how a movie with a devoted fan base can lose money on Saturday.

I finally went and saw Serenity. I went in with low-ish expectations. Having seen only two or three Firefly episodes, I'm far from what you would call a Browncoat.

I really liked it. I had hairs standing up on my arms for twenty minutes after I left the theater. It exceeded my expectations by a huge amount.

Too bad the title makes it sound like it chick flick. After seeing it, I'm more convinced than I was before that decent marketing to people outside the Browncoat Community might have made this film a ton of money.

There is always the chance that the box office numbers for the rest of the world will be big. If THE ISLAND can make money overseas then why not SERENITY?
