I'm seeing it Sunday night. We have to get the comic done first because we ship to the printers Monday morning.

My boss just saw it and didn't care for it. She liked the first one better. I'll have to wait and see.

Unfortunately, smurfy, Amber (my gf) dictates what I have to see in order to get her to see my movies. The funny part is, though. Normally, she ends up liking the movies I "drag" her to. I almost always hate every movie she's picked out with the exceptions being.... Alex and Emma.... Cheaper by the dozen (I really liked that movie).... and A Knights Tale. Everything else I HATED.

The good news in all of this is that I have developed a tolerance to most bad movies, and a kind of respect, after all if it wasn't for really horrible movies like The Horse Molester or stuff like that...I would never get to see the movies I like.

ILovePapaSmurf

Well, if she does drag you to the movie, if you hate it at least in 20 minutes after watching it, go and get your money back. I mean, there are some parts, but the boy meets girl, falls in love with boy, oh no he is a prince thing made me barf into my empty hot dog container. Its just bad and Julia Stiles is not my favorite actress.

As for Alex and Emma, great movie. I love Luke Wilson in that film. Cheaper by the Dozen is a worthless remake (sort of like the Jessica Simpson remake of 'Take my breath away). And a Knight's tale is one of those 'chick flick' movies that guys really dig. I highly enjoyed that.

Oz, avoid it man...its the worst romantic movie I have seen in a while.

Smurfy, you saved my ass you know that...I was reading your post and in walks Amber.... she reads it (It turns out that you two liked the exact same movies out of the ones I mentioned) and decides to wait until it comes out on DVD. 5 bucks beats 16 any day of the week. However, I will still have to see a movie of her choice tomorrow, but we'll get to see Kill Bill tomorrow night.

Its not even worth a rental fee anyways. Want a great romantic comedy check out 'Love Actually' (I am so pimping that movie when it arrives at the VS job). Its funny, sweet and very romantic. And Alan Rickman and Colin Firth are really awesome in it.

I kind of want to see Ella Enchanted. Let me know if it is good. /forums/images/icons/wink.gif

Kill Bill has been renting great here. And I am REALLY looking forward to the second. But I must agree with you, 'Love Actually' does rate high in my books, as I love the romantic comedies. Such classic scenes such as when Hugh Grant talks to the portrait of Margaret Thatcher; "Did you ever have this sort of trouble? Of course you didn't, you saucy little minx!" Classic!!!!

And Ella Enchanted is lovely. Really sweet, bitingly funny and worth checking out. Plus fab clothes

I highly recommend "Love Actually" as well. It will now be apart of my Christmas movie rotation which is saying something because I only have a select few.

Saw Kill Bill, Vol. 2 last night at the Midnight opening.
It was definitely AS good (and I'm guessing many people will say better) as 1, but much more story driven than 1. Definitely worth the wait...All questions are answered.

Yep, I second that- Kill Bill 2 is a very different movie from Kill Bill 1, but it is also quite good. I thoroughly enjoyed seeing the story fleshed out, and the movie is much funnier than Volume 1. Great stuff.

EDIT: Went to Rottentomatoes.com to see what the reviewers had to say, and I have to agree that some of the negative points they make about the movie are very good points- the movie did have some problems, but I'd like to defer discussing them until more people than just the cool people (Denyse and I) have seen it. /forums/images/icons/wink.gif

Volume 2 is a much better movie than was one. It has better dialogue, better fight sequences (twelve-thousand times more original than one at least) and no fight that last 16 hours that involved 8,000 people who look the same and who die in a bloody mess that grew old after the first five minutes.

Two has heart and is a B-movie with A-class actors. Every performance is great. I also like that the B-movie feel is never lost even when the A-level acting nearly breaks the mood. While there are a couple of scenes that are funny when I think they are not supposed to be, the movie works as intended in a way that Volume 1 just didn't for me.

Volume 1 is a distant memory for me... I barely care to remember more than a single scene. Volume 2 has dozens of scenes that stick in my mind and that I will be looking forward to seeing again.

I gave Volume 1 a C+ (should have been a C- really) and I give Volume 2 an A- for not selling out to the predictable and for never taking itself more seriously than a B-movie, and for not boring me to death.

[/ QUOTE ]

Of the two movies, 2 is definitely the one with more potential for boredom. There are many, many protracted scenes of dialogue, some of which seemed to me to be unnecessary and kind of clumsily handled, and very little action to speak of. At this point you are just being argumentative for the sake of being argumentative, if you are honestly saying that 2 was less boring than 1. If 1 is a roller coaster ride, 2 is a paddle-boat ride.

That is far less boring for me. I am not impressed by hyper-action. I am impressed by many different things in many different environments and in Volume 2 the dialogue, even the useless stuff, had me tuned in. The action was tight and quick, and it was held in the right spots. I wish one had been as well edited.

They are two very different films, that's one thing I'll agree on. Vol. 1 had a very comic book feel to it and was alot more colorful and seemed to take place in an alternate universe. Vol. 2 ditches most of the artsy shots and scenery, and besides the training scene, seems to be a lot more real. While I do think the dialogue was drawn out a bit in one or two scenes, the majority of it was necessary and I wouldn't have any of it cut. However, the one scene where Uma asks the pimp where Bill is, and he goes into some story that doesn't even come full circle to the question, well, that was pretty forced. But when it comes down to it, Vol. 2 is the Quentin film. Vol. 1 was the one that appealed to the masses, Vol. 2 is the film that shows us what a good movie is made of.

A friend of mine and I had this great conversation that broke down why every scene was necessary. I am way too tired to regurgitate that conversation from memory so you will just have to wish you had been there. /forums/images/icons/wink.gif

Yeah, I saw it last night. Actually I saw both of them yesterday, because I watched Vol. 1 at Josh's house with a few friends, then we went to Vol. 2 a few hours later. But, I think both are equally good in very different ways. Vol. 1 had better action, and Vol. 2 had better story. I did love the training scene, Pei Mei was hysterical.

I finally saw Kill Bill Vol. 2 and enjoyed it thoroughly. I really feel like I saw the second half to the film after a long, long intermission.

Bottom line is that I think I won't give my final verdict for this film until I have seen Vol 1. and 2 together back to back. I can almost guarantee I'll like it better than either of the two alone.

I loved Vol 2, and it kind of made me enjoy Vol 1 more in a way (not that I didn't already enjoy the first flick). I think, like Threadkiller says, my favorite version of the film will be both volumes edited together.

Efexeye
04-19-2004, 02:15 PM
Volume one is like Pulp Fiction- visceral, shocking, kinetic. Volume two is like Jackie Brown- thoughtful, ponderous, and weighty. I'd say that comparing volume 1 to volume 2 is like comparing a New Hope to Attack of the Clones. The two movies are just too different, to the point that I wouldn't even say that they reside in the same genre.

karmattack
04-19-2004, 02:26 PM
To make more sense of what I mean by "Vol. 2 made me appreciate Vol. 1 more," is that the first flick just felt very empty to me. Empty style. Now, I LIKED it and have grown to like it even more, but just had no reason to relate to it. The second flick drew me in to the story and made me actually invest in the characters and equate to their motivations. I think they compliment each other famously -- Vol. 1 has the kickass, high-octane pulp quality and lacks some of the heart; Vol. 2 has the story to justify Vol. 1, while having been fulfilled and set up properly by the first flick's style and action.
Gnome saying, B?

SPOILERS

To me, the style of Volume 1 WAS the substance- that was enough for me. Of course, at the end of Volume 2 it was 2:30 in the morning, I had just sat through Volume 1, my seat was about 3 inches too narrow for my fat ass, and I was tired, so maybe if I see it again at a more reasonable hour and in a more comfortable setting I'll be more enamored of it. My biggest criticism of it was that I never expected to be bored by a QT movie, and I felt bored towards the end. Also, the deus ex machina of the whole "truth serum" was a little hokey. I'm not saying it was bad, or even that I didn't like it- it just didn't blow me away (picture the guy in those old Memorex ads) the way the first one did. I also felt cheated that Bill got off so easily- all that fanfare about what a bad ass he was, then he was dispatched without BK even breaking a sweat? Rip-off! I also felt there was a lot of territory they didn't cover in either movie- lots of stuff about the DiVAS, what they did, how they broke up, why everyone ended in such a pedestrian lifestyle after DiVAS dissolution, etc, etc.

I think the two movies could have been cut into one 3 hour affair, but then I also don't know what they could have gotten rid of (except the whorehouse scene).

I'm just an amateur anyway- I still love QT and his work, and I don't feel the need to rag on it, I just had some minor problems, that's all. If I hadn't seen Volume one, or if I was seeing them both for the first time, I'm sure I would have walked away blown away. One of the reviewers at RT put it in the words I feel (or maybe it was Wells): I waited 6 months for THIS?

Exactly. I felt that Volume 1 lacked substance. All of the substance was in Volume 2. I can't say whether 2 made me like 1 more but I will know when I see them together.

I think that the reason so many people feel that Vol. 2 didn't quite live up to their expectations is because part of the intent of the film was to subvert people's expectations. I mean, who here was expecting Michael Madsen, Mr. Blonde himself, to be playing a washed-up trailer trash loser? Who expected Bill and Beatrix's final showdown to go the way it did? I found myself being constantly thrown for a loop by all these little wonderful surprises.

Subverting genre cliches (and conversely, embracing them) is part of the reason why Tarantino is such a brilliant filmmaker. How many times had we seen in any number of films the two bad-ass assassins show up at someone's door and kill them? Tons of times. But before Pulp Fiction, how many times had we seen the two assassins have a conversation like normal people on their way to the hit? Yeah, that's what I thought.

Also there is the criticism that Vol. 2 is too talky. Have people forgotten how Quentin writes movies? Throughout Vol. 1 I just kept waiting for someone to bust out into one of Tarantino's standard brilliantly weird and relaxed monologues. Vol. 2 definitely delivered for me on that front. I know I will never quite view Clark Kent in the same light again.

The whole cast delivered topnotch performances, with Carradine's performance being especially noteworthy. I loved the entire style of the film, particularly all the cheesy cool snap zooms during the training flashbacks.

I dug it, and I hope I don't have to wait another seven years for Tarantino's next movie.

EDIT: I feel the need to add that Ethan Hawke is the biggest dumb idiot jerk-face in the history of big dumb idiot jerk-faces.
