Ok I just saw the VH1 list of all time best songs
1.Satisfaction- rolling stones
I disagree although this a good song I believe stairway to heaven is the best ever. What does everyone else think is the number 1 song of all time.

Yes, Stairway to Heaven = greatest. Its not my favorite, but its the best. At least I think so. If that makes sense.

That's about as pointless a question as "what is the best movie of all time". Ask me on three different days, I'll give you three different answers. It definitely is not Stairway to Heaven, though, unless you're making out with your dreamy b/f or g/f on the dance floor at Junior prom.

Ahh, the bad memories.
I went to school with a mentally "challenged" boy named Ricky. My mom raised me to never turn someone down if asked to dance, because it would be too embarassing for that person. That little shit asked me to dance EVERY dance to the same 2 songs (7th grade through high school). Patience and Stairway. The 2 [censored] longest songs in the dance catalog. I still get crap from my high school friends about that.

Eric Clapton is god. One time I was really bored, so me and my best friends boyfriend wrote a "Gods of Rock" thingy. There were 6 main gods. Jimmy Page, Jimi Hendrix, George Harrison, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Eric Clapton and Carlos Santana. All very good contenders for having something to do with the greatest song of all time.
Matthew
04-16-2004, 10:09 PM
You forgot Richie Sambora, Joe Satriani, Frank Zappa, Ozzie,
OH, and btw, Jimmi Page is not that great of a guitarist, actually take a look at your zeppelin albums and check who wrote the majority of their songs.
BTW .. EVERY song on their first 2 albums are a remake except for Ramble One and Thank You.

As far as song writing, he is one of the tops in my book. He wrote most of the monkeys songs, and as a musician and teacher and knowing what a musical genious he is, it is easy for me to appreciate his music.
I also like Bernstein!

Manilow I don't think wrote anything for the Monkees. I know Neil Diamond did and it was a huge hit for the guys.
Manilow wrote and performed with Bette Midler (he was her pianoist and they performed in a gay night club's basement). She went off and did her thing, and after a couple years Manilow got his big break.
Manilow has a lot of hits to his belt, so who knows, but I am pretty sure that he didn't write anything for the Monkees. I even asked me mom who is a huge Manilow nut and she said no as well. I'll find out for ya!

Although I only found proof of manilow writing 2 songs (I'm a believer and the Monkees Theme ) and I also found prood of Diamond writing some songs (Listen to the band ) it's hard to tell if this proof is 100% accurate. I'll let it go for now.

You would bump harrison for Elvis!? Elvis was hardly a musician. Sure he could dance and had a decent voice, but half the songs he sang were originally sung by African American artists. He ripped off them and made money off of it. Sort of like how pop artists today are taking old 80s hits and making them their own.
If you consider Elvis a truly original artist, then you should tack Britney Spears on that list as well.

I agree that BB King is an amazing guitarist, and I considered that, but its a list of ROCK guitarists....BB King is more blues. And about Jimi Page not being 'that great of a guitarist', I'm kind of speechless, sure he's not the BEST, but he's still amazing. He is definately a god. SO ARE GEORGE HARRISON AND STEVIE RAY VAUGHAN. They are incredible. Overall though, Jimi Hendrix is the equivalent of Zues.
EDIT: The list is strickly guitarists, I don't put into consideration song writing, and originality of the songs, I put in to consideration the difficulty and execution of how they are played. Listen to some solos by these guitarists, its pure excellence.
Matthew
04-17-2004, 08:02 PM
I hate to burst your bubble, and although Jimmi Page SOUNDS like he is good, listen carefully to his playing. Very sloppy, very raw, and not too innovative. He plays solos in 1 scale and 1 scale alone (Very seldom venturing out) and, well, is not that good.
GOOD guitarists besides those already mentioned...
Chet Atkins, Eric Johnson and Steve Vai.

Sorry man, but I'm a Beliver was written by Neil Diamond, and The Theme to the Monkees was written by Boyce and Hart. Don't argue with me on my Monkees, son, you are gonna get burnt!
Manilow did however write the Mmm Mmm Good song for Campbell's soup, and that is damned catchy!
Oops, missed one, Listen to the Band was written by Mike Nesmith. Later recorded by the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band.

Manilow also wrote (I think) the Plop Plop Fizz Fizz song (lets see if any american idol hopefuls sing that jingle). He also wrote the American Bandstand theme and produced a couple hit records for Dionne Warwick..
Voodoo Child (Slight Return) is THE all time number one rock song. It is a song about a god- "I stand up next to a mountain/chop it down with the edge of my hand/pick up all the pieces and make an island/might even raise a little sand" It is a song about eternity and the stone-faith that there is something beyond death- "if I don't see you no more on this world/I'll meet you on the next one/don't be late" And the guitar, my God the guitar... it's as if the finger of the Creator Himself was upon that fret. Every time I watch a Hendrix performance, I am utterly amazed, just watching his hands as he plays takes my breath away. When I hear Voodoo Child (Slight Return) I feel as if I AM the universe. I feel more alive for those few moments than at any other time in my existence. I feel like I can fly, f*ck, and lay waste to all the stars in Heaven and then reform space and time to fit my every whim. There are other good rock songs out there, but none so primal, so raw, so sexual as to make you ache for that one moment when you connect with another human being on the most basic spiritual, transcendental level. THAT is what makes rock and roll. A burning flame that burns so bright the sun sacrifices itself in super nova just to not be outdone. It's a flame that envelopes but does not consume, a flame that only serves to fuel the inner fire that DEMANDS you acknowledge that you are in fact Alive.

I LOVE watching Hulk Hogan play air guitar to that one! Every time I see Hulk, I think the hand of God himself wrestles!

no bob dylan on this list? as you know, jimi hendrix remade a few dylan songs. and ever since hendrix died, dylan insisted on playing the same riffs as him in concert. sort of a tribute to him.
Matthew
04-18-2004, 11:45 PM
I think your a little backward. Dylan did the writing, All along the watchtower for example. They were good friends back in the day.
in_diana_jones
04-19-2004, 08:40 PM
No, i'm aware of that. what i'm saying is that dylan is a great guitarist as well, it's just that not many consider him to be with all his early folk songs and what not. but when he is live in concert he whips out some pretty cool riffs.
Matthew
04-19-2004, 09:49 PM

Don't get me wrong...I drive 20 mph faster when "Rock & Roll" is on...but they ripped off a whole bunch of black blues musicians. I wouldn't have as much of a beef about it if they hadn't fought so hard to keep from paying the dudes that wrote the songs they made millions on.

I'm kind of split between the two, I don't know if I like Nirvana or GNR better. Both good.
But I still pick Led Zeppelin over anything. And about them ripping off black blues artists. Which songs? Because any of the CDs I own mostly say written by Robert Plant and Jimmy Page (or something of that sort) in the song credits. There are a few by other people, but not nearly as many as you're letting on. On BBC Sessions there are 3 songs that were not written by Zeppelin out of the out of the 19 (the songs that are repeated on the CDs were only counted once).

It's pretty well documented that Led Zeppelin used a lot of different blues songs. In fact, blues legend Willie Dixon sued Zep over 'Whole 'Lotta Love' and it was settled out of court. The thing to remember is that they (Zep) never felt like they were doing anything wrong. It was a tradition among blues musicians to use the old songs and nobody really ever claimed that they wrote them first since most of them had their roots in old folk songs. (speaking of, Gallows Pole is an old folk song). So if you like Zep, you might want to check out some of their blues influences like Robert Johnson.
Oh yeah, and Best Song Ever?

On BBC, Whole Lotta Love is credited under the members of Zeppelin and Willie Dixon. Dixon also wrote, You Shook Me with another guy, and I Can't Quit You Baby.
Somethin' Else (thats the name of the song) was written by Sharon Sheeley and Bob Cochran.
So I won't deny that they used other artists stuff, but Zeppelins greatest songs are written by them. For example: Stairway to Heaven, Heartbreaker, Commincation Breakdown, Black Dog and Going to California.

That's where the disagreement arises. If I remember correctly, Rock-n-Roll was a blues song from the 1950's. They took the basic structure and built their song around it. The original is much slower, but you can clearly make the connection between the two.
