View Full Version : Help - Comic Book People?

About 7 years ago, my mom sold all of my old comics at a garage sale. Its a familiar story I'm sure and if I would have had space and they would have been more important to me at the time, I am sure I could have done something to prevent it. I didn't though. Now, I am finding myself drawn back into it a bit and am trying to replace some of the comics that I really enjoyed.

There was one comic that I LOVED, but I can't remember the name of it. It was a really dark book drawn with a lot of detail (reminded me a bit of the Swamp Thing and the artist did really good tongues). I remember three stories (they may have all been from the same issue, but I doubt it).

One story was about a mushroom that instantly killed people, but in the one second between eating the mushroom and death, people said the high made them godlike. Mushroom eating parties sprang up and the story revolved around a detective who was going around to the parties aftermath trying to figure out why people would kill themselves this way. In another story, a man who was dealt a shit sandwhich in life stands out on a corner and challenges God to a fight. God doesn't show up for the fight and the city falls into lawlessness. The man (his name may have been Leroy) becomes like a cult figure in the neighborhood until God shows up in the form of a little kid and kicks the crap out of him. The last story I remember was about a couple making love and the man throws a flip comment out about love which lead to a discussion about how they didn't really know each other that well. He makes a crack about how he could have been the guy to committ some murder that happened close to the house. The woman freaks out thinking he is admitting to murder.

These came out about the same time as The Nam and the marvel New Universe. I have tried talking to a couple comic store employees, but get a lot of blank stares. Does this series sound familiar to anyone? Is there some resource that might help me figure it out?

Thanks!
Clint

You may want to pose this question to the folks over at Newsarama. They know way more about comics than we do...

I would recommend posting up over at the boards at www.fanboyradio.com. (http://www.fanboyradio.com.) Those guys would know. Plus if you're a comics fan you might want to check out their radio show.

I tried a Google search using some of the key words you gave. You may want to try again after thinking hard. Almost always I can type in something wierd like "Mushrooms+comics+godlike" and come up with something to give me a clue.

Good luck to you! There is nothing worse than half remembering something.

Thanks for the google search. I have done a couple in the past and nothing jarred loose. I have been thinking on this one for over a year and the best I could do is come up with some of the stories.

The title Dark Days keeps popping in my head, but Im sure that is just because I rented that movie last night. There may be a D in the title though..

Seriously kids.. Stay away from pot. This is the kind of shit that happens to your memory..

Thanks for all your help!

Maybe the comic doesn't really exist. It is the comic you meant to write once when you were stoned? That would explain the mushroom thing. /forums/images/icons/wink.gif

Dark Days is a comic, but it's about Vampires...So unless it's about vampires on mushrooms (hey, there's an idea), I don't think that's it...

While we're on the subject of things we can't find in google. I seem to remember two characters from the old Rocky and Bullwinkle cartoons that I can't find anywhere. They were two british gentlemen who sat in a club. One of them would regail the other with his adventures in Africa or somewhere and it always ended in a bad pun. Is this all in my head or did these two guys actually exist?

That is funny. I think you have to actually draw to be able to put a comic together though (Or be friends with Crumb). I wouldn't want to subject anyone to looking at my drawing.

Its also a movie about people who live in the New York subway tunnels.

Nobody better steal my idea about homeless vampires who are tripping balls on magic mushrooms. I just copyrighted the idea and will sue the hell out of any of you who do /forums/images/icons/smile.gif

Thanks. The last thing I need right now is another message board to be active on, but I keep finding myself drawn to this one. I mostly lurk, but you guys amuse me (and I was really touched by your outpouring for that code6enterprises guy)...

What is even better??!! These things are only 2 bucks a piece NM. I ordered the whole series and was out less than 50 bucks. I was convinced that these things would be worth 500 bucks a piece back when I started reading them..

I can't wait to crack that box open!
