Didn't you already ask this?

I just saw Jersey Girl.:)

I thought the movie was great. Just got through watching it with my mother (she enjoyed it too) and i ahve to rate it as my favourite Kevin Smith film so far.

1. Jersey Girl
2. Zack and Miri
3. Clerks II

I don't live in America, nor do i follow he lives of movie stars, but i do remember hearing something about how 'Bennifer' hurt the movie...

I just saw the movie. Nothing else. So without any external influences weighing in on my mind, I have to say i think this is a really great film.

For interests sake, can someone explain to me the details of how the this film ended up getting negativity it did?

Or was it nothing more that the fact that people at the time hated ben his lady...

Mostly that.
The film was released in very close time to another film they both starred in called "Gigli".
Considering Gigli got torn apart by critics, they didn't really give Jersey Girl a chance.
Shame. I like it too

But that makes no sense!
All actors do crap films at times, why assume that because they did one bacd film, the other would be bad? I've never heard aof something like that happening before. Is that common practice?

I'm not sure, Kevin may only be joking, but i seem to remember him talking a little bit about how crap jersey girl was and how he went into hiding, and then took a step back in his career and made Clerks II afterwards instead of growing as a writer/director.

Infact, on the clerks II DVD, doesn't his wife sort of say how she was initially disappointed in his decision to make Clerks II?

Anyway, as far as i'm concerned, he's grown, and his movies generally get better. Like i would seperate them into two camps.

Clerks
Mallrats
Chasing Amy

jersey girl
clerks II
Zack and miri

as movies, i consider the latter as better movies. Just more polished and professional. Looking at jersey girl, if all that crap hadn't happened with Gigli, it could have been a break out hit. Or at least the moove wouldn't have pushed Kevin and co, to a new level.

Kevin's been pretty lucky in life, but it still sucks when smething like this happens and theres just nothing you did wrong, or anything you could have done to prevent it.

I'd like to see him write and direct his own Sci-fi trilogy one day...

Who needs George Lucas?

I've never seen Jersey Girl.

Critics are a fickle bunch.

And the bombing of the film would have especially hurt Kev as it was a personal script for him.

Watch it Antonio, I have it on DVD and it's a nice Sunday lunch time watch.

Agreed. I borrowed Double A's dvd and was pleasently surprised.

As for Clerks II, I think it's Mr. Smith's worst film.

I've never seen Jersey Girl.

No, i'd rather see him create his own serious sci-fi mythology.

He can't do serious.
If he could, he would have by now. He desperately wants to be seen as a serious director.*

I havn't watched Mallrats for ages, but whenever I do it fill's me up with teenage nostalgia as I remember a time when I actually wanted to be like Shannon Doherty.:o

I was suprised at how much I liked Jersey Girl, mainly as I like neither Ben nor Ifer. I was glad that she wasn't present for most of the movie.

I'm sure I read somewhere last week funding for Red State had been found. You never know, he may try his hand at a 'serious' horror film.

I'm not saying that he wouldn't do one. I'm saying I don't know if he CAN.
It's taken forever to get funding for this... bad sign?
We'll only know when we watch it. If we ever get to.

Veering off subject, but having Wiki'ed Red State, I noticed C.Fever is mentioned three times on the Quick Stop page. Surely that's enough to warrant a page of your own now. D*C is also mentioned which you were involved in!

jersey girl was mature enough as a movie. Sure, it had its comedy, but it was also a very emotional story told incredibly well.

he should do it more like alien, less like aliens. Its all about what you DON'T see.;)

Which incidently, works well with a smaller budget.:p

Like i would just love to see Smith create his own sci-fi mythology. Alien and terminator started relatively low budget... its abll about the concept. IF he could create soemthing special, and i think he could, then he could be the next george lucas!:D:cool:

Ok, you can forgive the quality of Clerks, but whats Mallrats excuse?

And at least Clerks II is shot well, and the acting of the other characters is good.

Mallrats is just plain bad in every way.

The worst smith script. Bad acting, poor direction.

And yet, all is forgiven for a glimpse of Joey Lauren Adams.

And on a slightly more serious note, it kickstarted Jason Lee's career, I can't hate Mallrats, it was my (unknowingly) first foray into Smith's movies.

I think that Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back was the overall worse film. It was funny, but just not good. Plus he butchered the awesome 4 issue comic that connected Chasing Amy and Dogma, which may be his best bit of comic work ever, to use as plot filler. I'm still pissed about that.

You guys are too god damn funny. I LOVE the court room cartoons, it's like you guys planned it. Brilliant

I love Kevin Smith and honestly Dogma is his best flick, all other askewniverse flicks are funny as hell

Jersey Girl and Zack n Mari are the only 2 Smith movies I have not seen but will be watching them very soon
