Hello folks following a recent post a few people regarded some rumours i mentioned from The Lord Of The Rings - Return of the King as spoilers.
I am of the opinion that unless i am stating fact having witnessed it myself a rumour is exactly what it is.
Of course i appreciate why SPOILERS can ruin a flick for some one so just want opinion as to what you guys beleive constitues a SPOILER so as not to offend.
After all virtually every movie of note has been written and published so are we to stop posting or writing spoiler on every movie that has been a book prior to shooting if we hear any rumours?
Your opinions

I can't believe you are this dense... you gave away the ending of a story. Simple.
Every Internet movie site around demands that you not give away spoilers to new or pending movies without first announcing that your thread or comment contains one.
Most people who will see ROTK have not read the book.

It was voted book of the century twice one of highest selling books of all time do you really think that not many people who watch the film might have ventured to a book store or a library???

739 posts or not RB I think u r being a bit of a dick about this. What the Dirtiest of Sanchez's originally posted was a rumour and nothing more. If he, however , happened to be the writer of the script or work on the Production team then I can understand why u might be annoyed. But as it stands he is merely repeating what he has heard correctly or not. By the way Keyser Soze is...................

No... I can't believe how easily some of you ignore the obvious. What he said WITHIN his rumor was a fact. He gave away an actual event in the story. This is obvious to anyone who has read the books.

I didn't ignore it I just couldn't care less. Have I mentioned I haven't read the book yet????? Well it still hasn't spoilt it for me. And so I must represent one of those you are trying to 'protect' then surely this must mean that yr point is errrrrrrr pointless. I think.

So the world revolves around your interest? I don't care how you feel about it. It is frowned upon to give away plot points without warning people of it first and every movie site on the web agrees with that.

Continuing to use Lord of the Rings as an example, right now I don't know anything about what happens in the third film: who lives, who dies, what becomes of the ring, nothing. And that's the way I intend to keep it until I see the film, so that I can enjoy the unfolding of the story as Tolkien devised it.
Now, if someone posts a message stating that, for example, "I heard a rumor that the producers are changing the ending of Return of the King so that Gimli (or whoever; like I said, I have no idea) doesn't die," rumor or no, that's a spoiler, and you should have the courtesy to post a spoiler warning in the heading, much as Chris asked people to do this weekend when discussing X2. A small thing to ask, really.
No, it doesn't mean that every movie based on a book can't be discussed. But the LOTR movies are highly anticipated, with many, many people waiting to see it who haven't read the books, and the finale is coming relatively soon, so I'd think asking for some spoiler consideration is understandable.
By the way, I heard Anakin Skywalker is going to become someone called "Darth Vader" in the next Star Wars movie...

Wow - its fiesty here!!! Everyone take some chill pills and calm down dammit!!!
My two cents - saying something may not be happening in a film is as much a spoiler as saying it is happening. Example - "I hear that the hulk isn't going to be green" Now we know the hulk is supposed to be green... Get me??? It really has nothing to do with whether the film is based on a novel.

Now Anakin turning into Vader is not a spoiler since everyone (including the creators of the movies) have talked about that for over 20 years. /forums/images/icons/laugh.gif

Ah but there u have the basis of your own arguement RB. Just because U and millions of others HAVE seen all the Star Wars movie it doesn't mean thast everyone has and so THAT is a spoiler. One could argue the same about Lord of The Rings as the books have been out for many years before the Star Wars films have and yet U don't deem that to be relevant????? What exactly is yr arguement now? That U can spoil a film if it has been around long enough? Where's the cut off point?? And what if it is based on a decades old book??

There will no doubt be legions of childrens who haven't seen A new Hope, Empire or ROTJ and will not have any idea regarding the future of young anakin skywalker i have got to say i'm with tonque here in saying that this too is a spoiler for how do YOU know RB that everyone not I to use your argument has heard this from Lucasfilm?
If it makes everyone happy i'll post spoiler on any rumour heard on any piece of literature likely to be made into a movie that i have read.
Its like my learned friend Mr Tipton said it is not alot too ask which which if any of you (RB) care to read is what i was seeking clarification on with this thread.
RB: if you don't like answers perhaps you shouldn't question everything!

Wrong... this is like playing with little children.
People have had the opportunity to see the other three movies for about 20 years now so there is no need for spoiler warnings. ROTK has not come out yet as a movie. It is not the responsibility of the viewer to read the books. It is a different media.
Anakin being Darth Vader is part of the social vernacular of the world. From Iraq to Vietnam to Greenland it is common knowledge. People who have never seen a TV know that... I ran into some tribal people in the Amazon 10 years ago and their first words to me were "Vader is Lukes father?"

RB
Afetr all is said and done u shud post that your thread is gonna contain a spoiler- OF ANY KIND. from anakin to LOTR.
I dont know the LOTR comment nor do i want to. I have n't read the book and like a lot of people wont do until ive watched the movies.
Spoiling just isn't on, is like when homer comes out of the cinema on the simpsons and blows the end of Star wars.
dont bother doing it and if you are warn people first.

"There is a plot in there somewhere for a bad comedy... and I would love to write it!"
Only if you call it "The Force Must Be Crazy!"
It's clear we need to delineate what makes a spoiler. The post was about RotK the MOVIE. If it was a discussion about the book, those interested in the book could go read it, and those avoiding spoilers would know that this is an open discussion about an established and released work.
Fisrt off, we should note if we're talking book, movie, comic, whatever. There could be spoilers for the next Spider-Man movie based on what happened in the comic. For the comic, not a spoiler, already happened, but for the movie it is. Clarify what we're talking about.
Then we need to set a time period. My personal suggestion is that for movies we wait until one month of wide release, or barring wide release, one month of video release. For comics, once the newest issue is out it's open season on the previous one. Television can be assumed to be watched as it airs, so no lag time, but nothing pre-scheduled air time. Books, well, we dont discuss much here, so somebody else should come up with that rule.
If we define it for this site and post it in the FAQ we can make it official and accountable. No questions, no hypocracy.

I'm a bit concerned about this time period thing Things like movies and comics don't get released in other countries the same as the States. In Europe we don't get a lot of films till at least a month or 2 after the American release.

Thats true, except when its some uber popular kickass film thats ggonna blow away box offices, thats why we got daredevil later since he's not so recognised over here but x-men 2 was close to the mark for similar release dates worldwide

No, it's pretty much a spoiler. I think it's just easier to err on the side of caution and put SPOILER in the title of the thread, just in case someone may feel slighted.
That said, I don't really read upcoming movie threads for precisely that reason. But I've read Lord of the Rings so I forgive you. If you wrecked the end of "What A Girl Wants", for example, there would be hell to pay.

It's definetly a spoiler- I have actively avoided reading the LOTR books because I read them long ago and forgot the main plot points, but now I want to see the movies starting fresh.
Thanks a lot, dickhead!
