View Full Version : I should get an award for watching it...

Thank heaven for an episode marathon of Curb Your Enthusiasm to counteract the EXTREME length of the Academy Awards last night. 4 plus hours? Come on!
Few thoughts:
* Sean Penn was incredible in Mystic River. However, I wanted Bill Murray to win. Penn's role was made for an Oscar, and Bill Murray's was defined by his own restraint. Penn will have more nominations, but I don't think Murray will have that opportunity again.
* How fun is it to have LOTR's almost topple that pitiful Titanic. Just one more award, damn it! Plus, Peter Jackson looks like the uber-fan-boy.
* There were a few amusing moments. Billy Crystal had some decent jokes. Adrian Brody had breath spray. Will Farrell and Jack Black and the "You're Boring" song. The outfit Uma Thurman was wearing. Is it a kimono? The end of the Kleenex box? Who can tell?
* Sofia Coppolla seemed a bit miffed all night. Either that, or she seemed a bit pretentious. Hard to say.
* The performance for The Mighty Wind was great, and I am very glad they stayed in character for it.
Did anyone else find the affair pretty boring? Why was it so damn long? Did I miss something in the beginning (while watching CYE) that really lengthened the whole deal?

I think it was so long because aside from two instances, they didn't cue the music to shut people up.
Sofia just wanted to get her award and go home. Her dad is Francis Ford, her aunt is Talia Shire, cousin Nicholas Cage. That, and her father made the definative mafia moive(s). She's got the clout to know she's walking out with something, and more than a few times said, "Daddy, when is it time for me to win?"
(On a not Oscar topic, is it any wonder when anyone in that family does something it's high profile. Jason Scwartzmen's mediocre band Phantom Planet is a good example. I know he and the lead singer (forgot the name) are related to the Coppela-Shire clan, and two years ago you couldn't not hear them. Also, Sophia's directing debut with the Virgin Suicides was considered genius by those that didn't read the book. I'm not taking anything away from Lost in Translation, but that whole family knows what strings to pull to make sure the world knows of their projects.)
I was kind of hoping LOTR wouldn't win Best Picture just because I had something else (I forget what) as one of my Oscar pool spoilers, but I kind of gave up on whatever other movie I picked when LOTR won every damn thing ever. I had a couple of what I thought would be good spoilers, but this was one of those years that everyone that was expected to win actually won. This was also one of those years where there were some really good movies. The past two years have been those off years, where I don't really care who wins what because it's all pollitics. This year didn't seem too pollitical, but that's due to one movie winning every damn thing.
And it did seem pretty boring. Then again, it was still able to evoke all this typing from me.

I watched some of it then I watched Roman Holiday. I thought the oscars weren't that funny and Billy Crystal shirtless was the point of no return...how could they do that to so many innocent Smurfs. *sigh*
I was happy Charlize won. I was glad LOTR won and I was very upset with the fact that Elijah rubbed Maria (from Entertainment Tonight)'s dress like it was a nice and cuddly animal.
Other than that, I thought the oscars pretty much were a bore.

Which is why I stopped watching them and all other award shows years ago. That, and the winners usually aren't who I would pick, this year being the apparent exception.

My fave bits:
How hot did Johnny Depp look!!!
Award for Most Likely to be confused for a waiter: Stuart Townsend (Charlize's partner)
Best looking guy EVER - Johnny Depp
Best plug for a show on Australian TV - The dude who won for Best Animated Short
Future husband to Ozchick - Johnny Depp
Award for The Only Way They'd Ever Get Into The Oscars is as Their Brother's Date - Billy Baldwin
Most Appearances in Ozchick's dream after Oscar Night - Johnny Depp
Award for What the f*#$ is she wearing? - Uma Thurman
All in all, the major awards went to who I expected, and they were deserved as far as I can tell.. (Although I haven't seen Monster, and Naomi Watts was sensational in 21 Grams)

What I kept thinking was "He is going to be 41 in 4 months!" He looks to be around 20 years old.

This year's Oscars would have made a good drinking game. Take a shot everytime ROTK won something. I didn't pay too much attention to the show, but everytime ROTK won an Oscar someone shouted out the current number of wins the film had.
