What that story failed to mention was that a few years ago, Popeye and Olive Oyle finally got hitched. She agreed to on one condition: On the honeymoon night, no fisting.

No cartoon, no matter how endearing, could ever get me to eat bitter, bitter American vegetables. I thought my pallet was allergic to all things green until I had some Chinese vegetables properly prepared, they're actually very good.

Yup, Popeye hit the big 75.
The Empire State building was lit up green in honor of the ol salty dog's birthday!
Hmmm...I wonder...It just occured to Me that Popeye was the first one to open up a can of whoop ass on anyone!

I'd like to know how long it took Matt1 to find that picture, and what word search he did.

I have to give it to him, he is Master Zinger lately.

arent the early popeye animations and characters deemed as racist now? the ones I see (or last saw) on tv were mainly just him and brutus going fisticuffs for olive. And the dreadful popeye and son revival in the mid-late 80's

Why are you trying to analyse Popeye as a racist? Like those ol school cartoons with the crows they cant show anymore because its supposedly racist. Or people trying to think smurfs are anything more than A-sexual. Did you care as a kid? no. It was exellent entertainment. Popeye would kick your ass for even thinking that foo was racist. They need to stay away from re-doing that cartoon again tho. Unless they give olive some curves and a nice peice of ass. But they shouldnt, cause They killed the new ninja turtles show. ITs weak. Its like Pokemon ninja turtles or something. I EAT MY SPINACH BIATCH.

I'm not analyisng, I was generally enquiring, there is a big difference. I don't even remember the really early shows like popeye or jimmy and jeckle the crows to be honest, they are a blur in the back of my mind, I just remember simpsons itchy and scratchy making fun of such cartoons with their irish bashing old episode.

I've never seen any racist Popeye episodes, but I did see a really sexist one awhile back. It was on cartoon network late at night, and was entitled, "Women Can't Drive." In it, Popeye attemts to give Olive a driving lesson, but she keeps on getting distracted by clothes she sees and other girly stuff. It was hilarious. My friend and I couldn't believe they would still show it on TV.

Jimmy and Jeckle?
I think you're talking about "Heckle and Jeckle".

Loved watching them when I was a little kid!
The classics were great, I was disappointed when cartoon network edited some of the Tex Avery toons. /forums/images/icons/frown.gif

They were on an episode of the Simpsons, when Homer has a death fantasy- they are the last ones at his funeral and one of them says "there goes a Reeaal sack of crap."

Has anyone else noticed that Looney Tunes promotes cigarettes?

Back in the days cigs were very popular, and I don't think the general public were warned of the risks as much as today. Its not so much promoting it, it was following a fad.

But, that is what I think. /forums/images/icons/smile.gif

If Meet the Geeks was still on the air, I'd insert here that you should try out for the Simpsons and/or the Seinfeld geek. How do remember all this stuff?

Efexeye

I remember it because I read The Simpsons and Seinfeld like texts- I watch every rerun, I have the first 3 Simpsons seasons on DVD, and I spent almost 5 years taping every Seinfeld as they came on in syndication. See what not letting your kids watch TV does to them when they become "adults"? /forums/images/icons/wink.gif

[/ QUOTE ] Maybe it's just me, but every time I see someone in Looney Toons smoking, I get the sneaking feeling the cigarette will eventually explode in their face. I'm not sure if explode-face promotes smoking. /forums/images/icons/smirk.gif
