Oh God, I hope we go back!!!
Bush to Announce Missions to Mars, Moon ? (http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/ap/20040109/ap_on_go_pr_wh/bush_space)

There's so much we did'nt do back in the late sixties-early seventies.
Finally, a Moon Base maybe? A chance to develop new tech and to serve as a way station to Mars!?

Is anyone else thinking about Ray Bradbury and The Martian Chronicles right now?

[i]"'And somehow the mountains will never sound right to us; we'll give them new names, but the old names are there, somewhere in time, and the mountains were shaped and seen under those names, The names we'll give to the canals and mountains and cities will fall like so much water on the back of a mallard.

No matter how we touch Mars, we'll never touch it. And then we'll get mad at it, and you know what we'll do? We'll rip it up, rip the skin off, and change it to fit outselves.'

'We won't ruin Mars,' said the captain. 'It's too big and too good.'

'You think not? We Earth Men have a talent for ruining big beautiful things.'"[i/]

Well, although the warning is realistic, I doubt we're going to see Mars devirginized in our lifetime.

However, as nice as it is to see the space program back in action, it makes you wonder, what the hell happened to Space Station Freedom? It was going to be big enough to be visible from space, even where the air isn't as clear. Since the Columbia disaster, did all the other countries assume they were off the hook and stopped working on their compartments?

We're at least 20 years away from the hybernation technology needed for a trip to Mars, we can barely land our robots down there without them exploding or breaking off communications.

Until then, viva la Bear Suit!!!

A trillion dollars for a Mars mission? Fuck that, with a trillion dollars we could could destroy and rebuild 12.5 Iraq-sized countries. That seems like a way better way to spend our money.

You won't know that a trillion dollars is missing. By the time this mission is launched a trillion dollars will be like a hundred billion today. /forums/images/icons/smile.gif

Hell then, lets do both. First Iraq-sized countries, then the world...I mean the moon. And then those martians better look out.

Fear not those dastardly martians, for Santa Claus has already subdued them.
