Hi, I thought I'd take this opportunity to introduce myself. I'm Taylor Storm. An 18 yr old gal from the UK. So Hi there.

Anyway, down to the so-called business....

The Stand. This is my all time favourite movie ever! I've just watched the first two hours of it but now I have to wait a whole week for the next part. AND another week after that for the final part. All this suspence is killing me! If anyone else has seen it, please drop a line, or a post anyway,

Hugs, kisses & pencil shavings to y'all!

JUPITER'S THUNDER! A poster from the year 1994! This must be the result of some kind of catastrophic rip in the space-time continuum, or an immense tachyon field! I must consult my colleagues, Professors Brown and Peabody. /forums/images/icons/wink.gif

Both the book and the mini-series are pretty good.

I remember about 10 years ago when it first ran here, it was the same with me. I even had to work on the nights it was playing, so I recorded it. ( I still have the original recording here! )

So, I am not going to spoil anything you just go through what I had to . TOODLES

Welcome to the shoot!

Guys, I've got 3 copies of the book. The shorter paperback copy, the new uncut paperback copy and the uncut hardback copy. I used to have the movie on video but my friend borrowed it and killed it. I've been trying to order it from every video store in town but none of them can get a copy. When I said suspense I meant the suspense of waiting to own it on DVD.

I say y'all more that you think dude.

Adios.

As much as i like the mini-series, it just doesn't hold a candle to the book, how could it really though?

And i will say that i am looking forward to the new "'Salem's Lot" miniseries that is coming out pretty soon.

Hope they work on the story a little though. As much as I adore King (an autographed Cujo is a prized possesion) 'Salem's Lot was a weak story. Too rooted in stereotypical vampire lore. His stories have come a long way in terms of characterazation.

It's really been a long time since i read the novel, so i can't really comment on that, but i think there is plenty to improve on from the original TV movie that came out in the late 70's.

I thought The Stand was about as decent a regular-TV mini-series adaptation as possible. I mean, they cut out all kinds of stuff from the book, if you can believe that happy crappy, but it was still not bad.

A little-known-or-cared-about fact about The Stand: '80s band The Alarm has a song called "The Stand" that's all about the book--even Welsh rock bands are fans of it. Other than It, The Stand is my favorite King book, too.

Welcome to the site!

This is kind of an old topic to bring up, but since I'm interested in hearing everyone's opinion, I'll post it anyway. In November King was honored by the National Book Foundation for his body of work. A few people took issue with that idea, including this guy (http://www.boston.com/news/globe/editorial_opinion/oped/articles/2003/09/24/dumbing_down_american_readers/).

Any opinions?

Did someone get Walt Whitman mixed up with Walt Disney again ?

Well, lets talk about this, let me take my favorite Whitman paragraph

And these I see, these sparkling eyes,
These stores of mystic meaning, these young lives,
Building, equipping like a fleet of ships, immortal ships,
Soon to sail out over the measureless seas,
On the soul's voyage.

How close to this is "Pirates of the Carribean" ?

I must admit I didn't read the entire article, but it would seem this guy has an enormous corn-cob stuck up his ass. Maybe the publishing house never picked up his stylish 18th century historical romance novel and now he holds a grudge as well as contempt for commercially successful writers. Personally, Stephen King is one of the greatest authors of our time. He does get kind of wordy at times, going into great stretches of exposition that don't seem to move the plot along at all, but that's what makes King King- the attention to the details.

As for "The Stand", My best friend in high school gave me the new edition when we graduated- it had just come out in paperback and I finished it in a week. Excellent book- probably King's best. I was a little dissappointed with the TV adaptation. It was broadcast television afterall and not cable. My personal favorite from King would have to be "The Eyes of the Dragon".

I actually like Stephen King's The Shinning better, Steven Weber actually was normal in the beginning and had changed in the end. Jack Nicholson was good in the crazy scenes, but he's not really stretching there.

Tom Shales, that big blowhard, had problems with it, too. I say these guys who complained are very out of touch.

The real problem with the Jack Nicholson "The Shining" is Kubrick. Yes, he was a master filmmaker. Yes, he has a style that is all his own. However, he did not believe in the supernatural, which is the key to King's story. He cast Jack to play a man who goes stir crazy. Webber played a man who was driven mad by a spirit in the hotel. That said I like the Kubrick film, I just think of it as a similar story, not the same story. Besides, Scatman Crothers is the alltime coolest! After all, he was Hong Kong Phooey!!!!
