Affleck is not keen to return to Daredevil territory, however. “I am not eager to get back into the crimson outfit. It was a really, really, really hard movie to make and was sometimes really frustrating. They want to do a sequel, but what would be really interesting to me was if Kevin Smith wrote it. I don’t want to do it just to do more kung-fu in the red suit and I actually think there is an even kind of darker way to go with it. I would do that verbatim, because I think it’s a great story.”

Ben Affleck says he's only interested in making a "Daredevil" sequel if his buddy Kevin Smith directs it. So what does the "Dogma" director think about the prospect of adapting his "Daredevil" comics stories for the big screen? "I had heard [there was interest], then I was talking to them about writing it, but I wrote it once [as comics already], you know?" Smith said at last week's premiere of "The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King."
And from Wizard Magazine's interview with Kevin Smith:
Wizard: Rumor has it that your Daredevil arc might actually be your plot for the second film.
Smith: Both Ben [Affleck] and Mark [Steven Johnson] have asked me about writing the next one. I don't know. It'd be one thing if I only had to please Ben and Mark, but you have to deal with Marvel, Regency and Fox. I'd rather just kick back and watch somebody else try to make sense of my stuff."
Wow, I knew the movie ran the gamut with reactions from fans, but it seems Affleck didn't much like it either. I personally enjoyed it, a B+ effort to me on par with the Hulk, but I really felt like shitty editing and directing held it back, whereas I merely disagreed with storytelling and pacing in the Hulk's script. DD ended up a collage of entertaining(?) scenes rather than a fully-fleshed out film. Kevin doesn't exactly seem stoked, but I liked most of the performances in the film (if you didn't like Michael Clarke's Kingpin, go to hell and die, in that order), and I know his talent could make the sequel a worthy effort if he was so inclined.
It'll be a while in any case, Fox will be busy shooting and pimping out the semi-sequal, Jen Garner's Elektra for '06, in addition to more X-Men and the potential trainwreck known as Fantastic Four. So, more DD, yay or nay?

I would just love to see Kevin write and direct a major superhero movie. I liked DD but not as much as I liked THE HULK. I think that DD needed just a little bit more love and care.

The problem with Daredevil movies is they blew there whole wad in the first movie. They didn't set it up to be a franchise like they did with X-Men.
Daredevil knew who Kingpin was for years before Kingpin ever found out and Kingpin finding out was one of the greatest story arcs in all of comics (imho), but the movie's reveal ruined all of that story line ever happening.
Ben knowing and debating where or not to reveal DD's identity was another long standing story line and there was no reason to give that up so quickly.
I also wish they hadn't messed with his origin. Him being blinded was because of an act of heroism to knock a blind man out of the way of a truck. It was always kind of set up that instead of just being blinded, he gets super powers for doing that so selflessly. Agin, inmho.
Elektra was the favorite girlfriend of fans and they start off with her. I still think the first movie should have been him with Karen. Karen was a horrible character, but did one of the best things they could have ended the movie with. When he tells her that his DD, she leaves him.
Each of DD's girlfriends represent a different aspect of his life which could have been covered in each movie. Karen loved the lawyer and represented a normal life, Elektra represented the more vengence side of losing a loved one. Typhoid Mary represented the duality of his lives. Black Widow was a fellow super hero do-gooder. And most recently Echo had overcome her disablity as he had.
There is a lot of material they could have started with to make a sequel more wanted, but at the end of the movie there were no unanswered questions to make you want to go back for more unlike X-Men or even Spiderman. And it didn't end with you wanting to know what happens next to this character like in the original Batman movie.
DD is my first and favorite character whom I never would have read if Kevin hadn't wrote for it. Kevin's the whole reason I got into reading comics in the first place. DD broke my heart because it could have been so much more.
I'd be curious to hear from Denyse seeing as she owns 99% of the entire DD collection. I think she's short like 4 issues.

agreeing with RB, i really think that they did make DD a bit too dark. it reminded me of batman and batman returns, only more gruesome. if smith executed DD perfectly, he would definetly gain more respect points (because lord knows that it's almost impossible to improve upon the first). i'll pray for this... /forums/images/icons/laugh.gif

On my superhero movie meter, I put DD tied with the Hulk, way ahead of Spiderman, but still way behind X-Men...

I felt they didn't go dark enough. I seem to recall Johnson said he had shot the movie in a no-holds barred type of fashion, so that for the DVD they could release a more violent, unrated Director's cut. What happened with that?
Overall, I liked the movie alot. Affleck was decent (never really the type of actor I had in mind for DD), Farrel's Bullseye was really fun to watch, and Favreau was genius. It was a movie that just tried too hard. Too many elements that needed juggling.
An adaption of Kevin's run would be a bit odd, what with the whole Mysterio angle. But, I guess they could easily replace his character with the Kingpin, or whoever.

I highly disagree. I think that it was perfect because the darkness was symbolism. DD is blind so he is always in the dark and, therefore, make the movie more of a darker tale.

Ask and you shall receive...Although why you want my opinion is beyond me...
My first (and for many years ONLY) comic was DD (hell we share the same initials, how much more bonded could we be?). I have never been that much of a purist when it comes to translating comic from book to film. Granted, in DD the timeline was all muddled, but many aspects of the origin and early issues are in the movie. Karen was there as well, doing what she did in the early comics, working for Matt and Foggy, they just never actually introduced her to us. I have to disagree slightly with Fangirl on the issue of "blowing the whole wad" however. I think the fact that Karen was there (if undeveloped) and that Electra was away doing some "healing", leaving Matt free to develop other relationships, was a perfect opening to bring Kevin's arc to the screen or for that matter, some other Karen involved arc (of which there are a few). Granted, they would have to monkey further with the whole timeline, but I, for one, would love to see a "superhero falls in love with girl, loses girl to villain and finds mother in the process" movie. As long as we expect and accept that the movie makers need to take SOME creative license with our books, there are still plenty of possibilities. I didn't hear anyone going off in fits when Rogue hooked up with Bobby and had never heard of Mystique when she came on board with the X-men...And look how well that's turned out. I think Ben's either a)being a little gun-shy after some of the criticism being heaped on his recent performances, or b) he's trying to blackmail Kevin into doing it by threatening to "Kill the franchise", or c) I don't have a single clue as to what I'm talking about and should quit while I'm still allowed to post here. Take your pick...

Hmmm, yea Karen definitely needs to be a major character in the next one. They already used up the classic Bullsey and DD church fight scene, but the basic plot of Guardian Devil could still work (long as they get a villian that's not fishbowl head). Additionally, there's something to be said of an original script, which the liberal use of DD plotlines in the first one might help to instigate. Magneto never tied up the X-Men in lady Liberty's head or tried to use rougue as a battery in the comics, but it worked fine for the Movie. Twists like that not only help to surprise comic fans, they make for a much tighter script. I understand Kevin's concerns about writing in too familiar territory, then fighting Fox to keep it intact, but I'd hate to see all the promise exhibited in DD1 go to waste.

DD 2 would be better than the first if Smith's humor and dialouge were inserted. This is an interesing concept.
