Jim Carrey as Count OlafA while ago, the shoot had a mention in the news section about Jim Carrey playing Count Olaf in the movie version of Lemony Snicket's 'A Series of Unfortunate Events'. First of all, is anyone here familiar with the books, and if you are, how do you feel about Jim Carrey taking on this role.
<input type="radio" name="option" value="1" />I'm thrilled! He'll do a great job!
<input type="radio" name="option" value="2" />Noooooo! Even under all that Grinch make-up you were watching JIM CARREY! I don't want the same to happen with Olaf!
<input type="radio" name="option" value="3" />Not familiar with the Count but I'd probably see it because I'm a Jim Carrey fan.
<input type="radio" name="option" value="4" />Not familiar with the Count but I'm not going to see it because I don't like Jim Carrey.
<INPUT TYPE=Submit NAME=Submit VALUE="Submit vote" class="buttons"></form>
My answer's the second one. I really like Jim Carrey, and I think 'Bruce Almighty' will be funny, but I don't want to see him as Olaf.

He's a character in a book by Lemony Snicket. He's the villain. He tries to kill little children. You can lemonysnicket.com (http://www.lemonysnicket.com) for more details...There's even a song about him that you can download and listen to.

I dunno if he's succeeded, but he tries. He's a villain...I did mention that, right?

It would be go either way for him, we've seen him do serious, evil and funny in Man on the Moon and THe Cable guy, I dont know the chracter Olaf so I have no idea what sort of chracter he's taking on, but I shudder when I think of him in films like the grinch, ace ventura 2, the mask and batman forever. If its a sort of Fagin from "Oliver twist" meets jack the ripper, I think he could pull that off.
Spike_Spiegel
04-04-2003, 04:54 AM
Well I guess he could pull it off... After all he's supposed to be God or something in one of his upcoming movies. I really wouldn't care one way or the other.

The point is that the kids are the main characters and Jim Carrey tends to steal the show...not whether or not he could play a bad guy. I just don't want him overshadowing the movie. He should stick to original characters and not mess with established ones...at least in this case.

Actually Limeny took the Count Olaf character from a very old and very famous movie called Nosferatu. ironically, they are almost the same character, skinny fang-toothed balding men with pointy ears who live in mansions. as for carrey as olaf? there have been worse casting jobs, we'll see how he does when the movie is out, The Majestic proved he had range, maybe he wont fuck it up as bad as one might think. /forums/images/icons/smirk.gif

s'right. but you dont need to be a film nerd as i am to know that, just look at the two characters side by side.

Well, maybe, but you still used the term "ironically", incorrectly.

Actually, you have to give him some major credit for the resurrection of a thread over starting a new one. Whether he did a search or was just reading through old stuff, I think it deserves a pat on the back. /forums/images/icons/wink.gif

Don't hate 'em just cause they're new, it took some effort on his/her part to look around and see what was already dicussed and add a comment rather than just starting a thread we already have 50 of .
I applaud this persons effort and courtesy, and like J.B. would only ask them to hit the shift key once and while, (where applicable).

I dunno...the pics I've seen make him look like a pretty solid Count Olaf. Dude DID shave his head for the part...but he seems like he threw himself into the part, though. And, really, without a big name like his (and Meryl Streep) attached to this, it would've had a lot harder time getting made.
But I agree that if it's anything like The Grinch, it will be awful. That movie is still on my list of all-time shittiest movies compared to the source material.
Then thing with these Lemony Snicket books is, I read the first three books after hearing that Carrey had been cast, so when I read it, I pictured him as Olaf, and it worked okay. In my head.

Blah what? Blah making the party bigger? Or is that your Orlock impression? I thought Legosi was the one who went "Blah." Or was it The Count?
I'm excited and worried at the same time on this one. Carrey could be great, or just waaaaay too over the top.

you guys are early, 2003...
I'm no great movie connaisseur but I just saw the trailer of this movie on countolaf.com and I can't wait to see it.
So back to the 2 year old question:
Is Jim Carrey fit to play the role???

Whether people like him or not Carrey is a very versatile actor; one of which I do not personally like, yet he demands my respect and has earned it. I like Man on the Moon (b/c Jerry Lawler and Jim Ross were in it intially, but came to grow fond of the movie) , as did I the movie where he played the guy who's whole life was taped and aired live for a national audience (the name escapes me in my drunken stupor as I write this). He has came a long way since his Dumb & Dumber days and is the only man I could watch play the new Willy Wonka rather than my man Johnny Depp.

Well FXghey, I think I was quite clear, I kept it short, I did not use words that are not in the dictionary and I don't think the question is to difficult. As a non-native English speaker I should conclude that or you're level of education is very low or with nearly 2,500 post you still don't know how a thread works.
Specially for you Efexeye (you DONKEY) I will explain what I mean::
1. you guys are early, 2003...
explanation: this thread was started on the first of April 2003 the movie has not yet been released in the gay bash Capitol of Europe so it must have been sparked by a press release of some sort -that makes you early-.
2. I'm no great movie connaisseur but I just saw the trailer of this movie on countolaf.com and I can't wait to see it.
explanation: I don't know shit about movies but I do like the looks of this one.
3. So back to the 2 year old question:
Is Jim Carrey fit to play the role???
explanation: I think this is where you ran into trouble Efex........
The question 2 years ago was; do you think Jim Carrey will rape the image of our "beloved" Count Olaf (dumb americans) by playing the part in the characteristic Jim Carrey way. (scroll up in the thread for some examples.)
Reaction guideline:
Now comes the hard part Efexeye first for you to understand what I'm talking about you will have to read the whole thread, it's just 20 post long and they are numbered for you to know which one comes first (the one with #1). After that read my post again so that what I exactly mean is a bit more clear to you. When you have done that you will have 3 options one you just shut the fuck up and wait for someone else to react, two you go to www.countolaf.com, watch the trailer come back and react or three you watch the trailer and decide not to react.
If you decide to react this is what you react on:
Is Jim Carrey fit to play the role???
I asked this question again to get the unbias opinion of people on this site (seen as he was crucified two years ago) and to reanimate this thread for the second time.
-for anyone wanting to react please follow the reaction guideline or else SHUT THE FUCK UP.
Don't tell me about any spelling errors I made or gramatical errors just give me your unbias(that is after watching the trailer) opinion of Jim Carrey in the role of Count Olaf.
have fun,

Yeah. Right. Read the following.
Well FXghey, I think I was quite clear, I kept it short, I did not use words that are not in the dictionary and I don't think the question is to difficult. As a non-native English speaker I should conclude that or you're level of education is very low or with nearly 2,500 post you still don't know how a thread works.
First of all, you called him gay, which in reality, isn't an insult at all, but today's society views it as one, and that is the context in which you used it.
Secondly, you don't just come in here and tell a veteran of this board that a.) he is uneducated (He definately isn't, I should know, I am his brother) or b.) that he doesn't know how a thread works. The people that have been here from the beginning are the ones who dictate how threads work, not jackass noobs that have less than 20 posts.
Specially for you Efexeye (you DONKEY) I will explain what I mean::
Thirdly, you called him a donkey, also known as an ass, which is an insult.
No matter how you try to defend it, you posted a personal attack on Efex, just appologize and deal with it.

1. I misspelt his name as he did mine
2. he got himself into trouble by stupidly posting even you know how a thread works
(every forum works in the same way. Are FX and others claiming the design, development and workings of forums used by nearly every site on the web?? Or are you digging a ditch for him that's so deep it will not ever be possible for him to climb out and react on this thread in correct manner, as described and approved be me!!)
I did not say he was stupid, I said that if he knows how a forum works he must be stupid to ask a question like that.
3. he is a donkey it says so right under his name
4.lil' bro I think you owe me an appology for falsely accusing me of attacking Efexeye, the donkey.
Don't be to hung up on the post count homie, in reallity it just shows how many times you scribbled down a little piece of shit on the internet or how many times you posted a masterpiece of literture on a webpage.

I'll give you that. Still, making fun of someone's sexual orientation is way worse than calling them a wastebasket. And I thought it said wastebasket when I first read it, too. Care to explain what it stands for?
2. he got himself into trouble by stupidly posting even you know how a thread works

He didn't get himself into any trouble, with anyone but you, at least. Every forum does NOT work the same way. I post on several, and most of them are okay with personal attacks and bashing, but this one is not.
No one cares if they have your approval to post or not--you have established no credibility and have exhibited no tact in forming your argument.
3. he is a donkey it says so right under his name
I didn't see that as his custom title before I posted. My bad.
4.lil' bro I think you owe me an appology for falsely accusing me of attacking Efexeye, the donkey.
Had it been a false accusation that may be correct...but...it wasn't...so it's not...and I won't...

Really? I can definately tell that you're aiming for the first one.
The main problem is, the movie that you are talking about here was released MONTHS ago, so whether or not JC is the right person for the part, he played it, and there's nothing we can do about it. This thread has been ressurrected two times too many.

This is getting childish, your full of shit siz-something-!
I was asking your opinions on the movie it never was played in cinemas in Europe. I would like to rent it but don't want to waste my time watching a masked Grinch part 2.
Seen as the movie has been out for MONTHS I take it that if it was any good you movie guys and girls must have seen it or heard about it.
- That must have been absurd thinking on my part, judging on what ever his name is reaction.-
So you guys just go on discussing what Dmoney is doing
( http://moviepoopshoot.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2408 )
and let this thread die.
Oh yeah, I would like to apologise:
I am very sorry that slizzelizzel is so sexually insecure that he takes offence when I change a other members screenname to make it say ghey. I'm very sorry for that slizzel.
Ryall, please let it just die.
?? what's that all about ??
insecure begging?? The guy hasn't even said anything if you want this thread to end just stop posting in it.

Watskeburt alluded that he is a non-native English speaker. One might deduce that he's not a resident here in the good ol' U S of A... maybe the movie hasn't been released yet where he lives. Or he doesn't get out much. Hell, Episode III was only the second movie I'd seen in over a year. Cut the guy some slack. You bust his balls for resurrecting an old thread, but you'd probably bust his balls as well for not using the search feature and starting a new thread about a topic that already exists. The dude just wanted to know what we thought of Jim Carrey as Olaf and everyone jumps down his throat... I've noticed that around here a lot lately. A lot of snippy bullshit.

I started out being perfectly nice, asking for an explanation about whay a 2 year old thread was resurrected to talk about a movie that has been out for a long time already. Wastebasket made it personal.
As far as you go, Wastebasket, I noticed your grammar and spelling got a lot better when you had someone to rip on- nice work! I still think you're an idiot, though. Your 7 posts really speak to your longevity on this site.

The confusion started because watskeburt just dived in without explaining why he was resurrecting this thread. He made some assumptions he has since clarified. And you know when you make assumptions you make an ass out of u and mption.
So watskeburt next time you ressurect the dead make sure you use a good brain and not one marked abby something so when it moves it doesn't go after townspeople.

I don't know what this means either.
But just stop wasting your time I have seen the movie.
I just want to thank the people that posted 2 years ago. Because of their post I was able to download the movie.
That was the only reason I wanted to give you an intressting topic

I haven't read the book to know the character of olaf but I felt that carrey was just hamming it up for the camera here and chewing scenery, as opposed to say, the acting he did in eternal sunshine.
