Now that Thanksgiving is over, what are your favorite Christmas Movies?

Mine are:
A Christmas Carol (You'll shoot your eye out.)
It's A Wonderful Life
Rudolph The Red-nosed Reindeer
Frosty The Snowman
Frosty Returns
Santa Claus Is Coming To Town
and last but not least.....The Little Drummer Boy. This one just brings a tear to the eye.

I saw Elf last night, and it is now in my top 5.

Others:
* It's a Wonderful Life
* Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer (the wierd clayish one they always show on holiday TV
* National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation
* Dr. Suess's How the Grinch Stole Christmas. Yes, I do mean the animated version. Not the Ron Howard disaster.
* White Christmas
* Scrooged
* Die Hard: Yep, I said it. Now think about it...

" Silent Night , Deadly Night " , 80s' slasher, saw it when I was 7 and Christmas was never the same.

" Gremlins "

" Jack Frost " Not the crappy one with Michael Keaton, the one where the snowman comes alive and kills people with icecicles.
********spoiler ***********
At the end they finally manage to kill him with antifreeze. Unintentional Comedy / Horror
Priceless !

I was going to say " Scrooged " with Bill Murray but I see Zens beat me to it .

i'm in charge of the DVD section at the store I'm part-timing, and I made a non-traditional Christmas display, including Gremlins, Die Hard, Silent Night Deadly Night, and Lethal Weapon. We didn't have The Ref, though.

i rented 8 Crazy Nights recently, not expecting it to be any good. maybe it was because my standards were so low, or maybe it was because i was in a happy go lucky mood...either way, i liked the flick. yes--thats like, not love, not hate. i laughed a lot, but overall, i agree some parts were stupid.

there was some review i read about this movie saying something along the lines of "if you are interested in a new holiday film, this might be for you..." i totally agree...so many films like the ones you have mentioned get old for me...it was good to see a new one for a change.

overall, i give the movie C+, it would have been higher if it weren't for some ridiculous scenes--such as the ones where he was alone in the mall and all the store logos tried to get him to cry...wow...anyways, what did you all think of this?

The Santa Clause (one of my guilty pleasures)
Oh and I have to add
Love Actually

Yeah, Love Actually. I know all the complaints, and have read all the reviews, and I do see their points. But still, that movie just made me smile.

There was not enough Colin Firth in it, but other than that it made me feel really good.

Love Actually is now my 2nd all time favorite romantic/comedy film. I don't understand why this movie, with great writing, great acting and great direction was reviewed so poorly, and My Big Fat Greek Wedding was showered with great reviews.

Colin Firth is a really great looking guy. If you want to get more of him, buy the soundtrack and when you take the cd out of the holder, there is a great picture of him and his on screen love.

Three words: Muppet Christmas Carol

watching this movie is every christmas with my best friend is a tradition for me. As is watching Muppet Treasure Island any chance we get /forums/images/icons/tongue.gif , but every year the first day of Christmas break she stays the night at my house and we watch Muppet Christmas Carol. Some may think it funny, but it is incredibly clever, and the music is great. I mean....how perfect is it that they put Fozzy as Mr. Fezziweg, and rename him Mr. Fozziweg......HAHA god i love that. Not to mention Michael Caine makes a GREAT Scrooge. The ghost of Christmas past is creepy though.

Yeah, I guess great minds do think alike. I had Rudolph and Frosty downloaded. I wanted Little Drummer Boy and Santa Claus is Coming to Town, but couldn't find them on the net. I actually saw a 3 DVD set today at Barnes & Noble that had all four of them, plus Frosty Returns. I just couldn't pass up the chance and bought them. Now I can delete the downloaded copies and free up some hard drive space.

Gremlins - Ahh Gizmo

Sorry I'm late to this thread, but A Christmas Story is definitely the best Christmas movie, bar none.

Hey karma, do you watch it when TNT shows it all day on Christmas? I think I've watched it 4 straight times, and of course I have the DVD. You had a really cool avatar a while back--what'd you do with it?

I sort of have this Christmas movie tradition (I know...what a surprise, huh?) every year...
I watch White Christmas while trimming the tree and It's A Wonderful Life while decorating the rest of the house. I bake cookies to The Santa Clause and cook Christmas Eve dinner while watching A Christmas Story...So I guess those would be my favorites. Either that or I'm stuck in a rut, take your pick.

For those of us who grew up wanting B.B. gun for Christmas that story was a parody of our own life. It was truth presented in a most eloquent and hilarious way. When I asked my Mom for B.B. gun , just like the Mom in the Movie (Cate Capshaw if I',m not mistaken )" You'll shoot your eye out. " She had said the same thing when I asked for fishing pole , which when I got it , I ironically enough managed to get a fishhook stuck in my nose.( Please dont ask! ) Anyway when I got my B.B. gun I went out first thing and killed a Blue Jay. There were other Blue Jays in the area and rather than flee they cried in confused melancholy . I never purposely killed another animal again. Although my friends and I did have alot fun with B.B.gun wars. Painful fun but still fun. An old friend of mine still has a B.B. embedded in the center of his chest some twenty years later and he still shows off his old wound and gets nostalgic for the good old days.

Matt1
12-04-2003, 01:44 AM
The narration really annoys me for starters. Whatever type of film it was shot on must be made out of ass, because it doesn't look too pretty. The kids are all so... annoying. Annoying is a word that keeps popping up in my mind. I think TBS's non-stop marathon showings of it have greatly contributed to my loathing for the movie. The main character's little brother is just ao damn cloying and precocious I just cannot handle it. Did I mention the narration bugs me? Oh, and I laughed a total of two times in the movie: 1.) When the kid starts cussing and beating the shit out of the other kid. 2.) When they chop off the duck's head. Other then those two scenes, I just didn't find it funny. I did find it to be a great cure for insomnia though.

A Christmas Story is the Sex Pistols of holiday comedies.

I dunno. I saw A Christmas Story when I was about the same age as the main character and just totally related to it. I'm assuming that's how it is for a lot of people, hence the constant airing during the holidays. It might not have been as funny to me if I had seen it in the last couple years. MAYBE. But, alas, 'tis a classic and you are doomed to a fate of leg lamps, cursing fathers, yellow-eyed bullies, frozen tongues, Little Orphan Annie, overly stuffed snowsuits, and yes....no BB gun.

I don't mean to be a christmas bastard by all means but I sort of agree with matt here. I just watched it and felt it was a bit lacking, I'm not saying it was a bad film, but I'm used to my christmas films producing some bullshit impossible miracle, to me that's what christmas films are all about. That changing the tyre scene was easily the greatest moment in the film. I just felt alot of it was unecessary.
I probably would have loved it as a kid, but watching in my adulthood for the first time (since I'm not even sure british tv has ever shown it), It's not something I can really relate to quite so well.

Mighty_Wingman

Omaru,

Yeah if you'd grown up here in the states you'd have seen it about ten times a year since the mid eighties. So it would be nostalgic. If I saw it the first time as an adult I probably wouldn't appreciate it either. You gotta take into acoount the first time I saw it I thought Michael Jackson was still cool.

I think this thread is awesome. We're arguing over whether A Christmas Movie is in fact cool, or not cool.

The not cool's are wrong of course, but it's good to see a thread about a movie that is obviously so cool get so many replies and attention, undoubtedly because it's difficult to miss how cool it is.

Since it is the Christmas season, a time of peace and sharing and brotherhood, can we all agree that this thread is the coolest Christmas thread?

You know, I just can't see how people don't think 'A Christmas Movie' is cool. All of the life lessons that are listed throughout.

I mean, haven't we all learned a few bad words from our dads, and when we got caught saying them by our moms, lied about it? That scene was a classic. Oh, and all of the thoughts we had as kids, like, wouldn't they be sorry if I died. Just goes along with all of his in the movie. Especially, the going blind because his mom washes out his mouth with soap.

I would think this movie was cool, even if the first time I saw it was as an adult.

When Kelsey Grammer got into trouble by snootching his baby sitter, he had mentioned that had he kept the relationship in NJ (where it began) that he would not have gotten into trouble.

Also, I know at least 5 couples who started dating when one of them was 16 and the other over 20. The law had no trouble with it. I think that the law was changed recently... it used to be that parents had to request prosecution (for under 16) but now the government can seek prosecution. I could be mistaken, but at least I don't have to worry about it since I am too old for 16 year olds.

Oh, well then maybe you need to mention that if you are going to say something like that before you tell me I need to seek help, ok?

Now, if I give you a cookie, will you be happy?

You don't think the idea of a 22 year old penetrating a 15 year old is disgusting... seek help.

I guess I need to seek help. Statutory rape is not based on any divine law or a reality based against human nature. It's specifics are not even common state-to-state or country-to-country. 50 years ago a 15 year old was far less mature and aware of the world than a 15 year old today.

I just don't buy into the idea that 16 year olds make more rational choices than 15 year olds. Or that at 18 you are more capable of making a choice about who you love than at 14.

I think it is pretty debatable actually... which is why for about 200 years it was rarely prosecuted.

15 year old, dating 22 year old = disturbing. And I make fun of MY bf for being older than me, and that's only a year and a half. I have my limits and morals, and I don't think its really ethical to be dating someone that is 7 years older than you. But I'm in danger of starting a huge argument about ethics . . . so I'll stop talking about that. I guess if they really do love each other its just fine. But how often does a 22 year old actually have a good mental connection with a 15 year old? That has to be either one very mature 15 year old, or one really immature 22 year old.

I would say the years between ages 14 and 18 are like dog years maturity wise. You learn alot about relationships, and life in general. I mean, who's better at picking up girls, you at age 15 or you at age... whatever your age is now. I'm certain, that even with my limited aquired knowledge, that I could Don Juan the hell out of some 15 year old girl if I wanted to. But why would I want to? I want a girl who has experienced things, who can hopefully tell the difference betweeen raging hormones and love, a girl that I can relate to. It's one thing to talk about age difference between a 22 year old and a 28 year old, it's another to talk about the difference betwwen a 15 year old and a 22 year old.

That being said, I'm against most statutory rape laws as they exist now. I think age 14 would be a good cut off.

Here's another good question. When did a post about Christmas Movies turn into this? Hahaha. Something tells me that the focus tends to be around people age of 15...that this may have been partly my fault /forums/images/icons/crazy.gif oops. Heh heh.

You could argue then that at 21 someone is not mature enought to date a 40 year old. It is all relative. Plus, what decides level of maturity? It is all conjecture.

Also, some would argue that a woman at 15 is as mature as a man at 22. /forums/images/icons/wink.gif

It's because of all that nuclear testing we did in the fifties.

Yeah, but I think the topic 'Christmas Movies' has kind of petered out.

As far as the age of consent goes, most states are 18. However, a lot of states allow one of the two to be under 18, as long as the other partner is no more than 2 or 3 years older. Of course, I haven't seen a state that would make this exception for anyone under 15. A lot will also allow it if the paren't give consent to the relationship.

Which is interesting if you think about it. So you are a rapist unless her mom says it is ok... in which case you are just her lover.

What other violation of law, besides statutory rape and alcohol consumption in the home, allows for a parent's permission to circumvent the law?

There is a girl in my class who has been dating a 21 year old guy for over a year now, and her parents are totally behind her on it. She is 16. As far as sex goes, I don't know, I don't want to know, but then again her Dad is 12 years older than her Mom. That obviously has a lot to do with their approval.

I'd probably say they didn't even bother because why preach what you don't practice. When/if I have kids, I probably won't keep them away from anything I havent done myself, I will until a certain age, like say 18, then they are free to do whatever.

I definitely agree with these. I'd add Elf and Christmas Vacation, but that's about it. Plus, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang is fuckin' awesome.

I'd add Elf and Christmas Vacation

Christmas Vacation is a classic:

'Hey Griswald, where you gonna put a tree that big?'

'Bend over and I'll show you.'

But the greatest Xmas movie has to be the Muppets Christmas Carol. God bless tiny Tim Crachit!
