So I got fired today. Lets just say somebody, who wasnt me, was stealing from the store. SO instead of firing that one person they fired everyone who worked with him the last time something was stolen. I was one of those people. The night we are talking about? Last night, Thanksgiving. The second or third busiest day of the year (For a Video Rental Place), The amount stolen that night, $2.50 (For those non US posters thats like 3/4ths of a sheep in the UK, and for those South of the Border like 1 Billion Pesos.)
Anyway it wasnt even REAL money it was Gift Card. So I sold 200 dollars worth of Gift Cards and was fired for less than 0.5% of that, of which I didnt even steal.
Just had to get that off my chest.
Anyone else have horrible firing experinces? Or Great Ways that you quit a job.

Dude,
Getting fired from a job can often be the best thing that ever happens to you. I know it probabaly doesn't feel that way and I'm not trying to sound like Dear Abby here but take this time to focus yourself in a new direction. Try doing something creative that you always wanted to do writing, painting, photography, acting , Whatever .
From your posts, I can tell you're a smart guy . I'm sure you can find something more rewarding and that you're much better suited to. Still if you really wanted your old job back you could hire a lawyer or just sue for damages. Or maybe even better yet you could just call them up and let them know you're feeling letigious.
As far as best ways to quit a job " Half baked " comes to mind .

I recently left my position at a video store. I was the assistant manager or as I like to say, second in command with a license to kill. /forums/images/icons/smile.gif
Even though I had worked there longer than anyone, my boss (who was transferred into the store months after I was promoted to assistant manager) made it clear that he didn't want me around. He even went so far as to write something to the affect of "If Nate wants to continue working here," on my review. Out of a 28 for customer service he gave me a 10, and considering how many people have asked of my whereabouts since I have quit working there a 10 is pure [censored].
My boss is so lazy however, that when it came time to argue our case in front of the city Alarm Commission because of repeated false security alarms, he sent me to go and argue the case which is clearly his responsibility. I made a very successful argument based on a promotional sign that would spin and cause our motion detectors to set off the alarm. It was decided we could keep our alarm permit if there were no false alarms in the next thirty days.
Since the writing was on the wall during a store shakedown, very similar to your problem I decided to look for another job. I was even given a counter offer to stay at the store by the district manager, but I refused to stay becasue my boss and I didn't get along. Not only that, but after I gave him my two weeks notice he was heard to say, "Now I can hire the people I want and we can get some work done at this store." There was even a question if I would even show up on the last day I was scheduled.
On my last day I came in early, and did all of my responsibilities exceptionally well. I even made sure the store was vacuumed which is something I hardly ever did on a Sunday night. When it came time to close I accidentally turned on the spinning sign before I set the alarm and left the store for good and unplugged my phone to avoid any calls from the security company.
Okay, so that last part didn't happen, but it would have been so freakin' cool.
I've worked those types of jobs in the past.
I feel your pain.
On one hand, you can walk away from this and find greener pastures elsewhere.
Or, you can report this to your state's dept. of labor, Etc. and bring this to the next level.
Can you prove the reason for termination was unjust?
Were you a part or full time worker? Was this job your only means of money? There's a lot to consider. You might be eligible for unemployment assistance.
Whatever course of action you take, I wish you the best!

My first thought is: I am sorry. Getting fired sucks no matter what. It is very hard not to take it personally. It is personal. You can almost always trace back the problem to a personal issue with the firing party that has NOTHING to do with you.
Getting laid off was the best thing that ever happened to me. I came home from California when my father got sick, and took a job at a great company with great people. The only clinker in the works was a bad owner who liked cheap help and cared less about results. 3 years later I got laid off on Valentines Day (this year). He had laid off all our talent in favor of people that worked for half our wage. All my former bosses are doing amazing now, and have branched out into businesses that appreciate their talent.
If I hadn't been let go I never would have started my own business. I would not trade this last year, or the people that have helped me along the way, for anything. Without the security blanket of a company I was responsible to find what empowered me. I wish you the same.
When you start your job hunt, I can recommend a book that helped me. Pre-warning, it is not for a person that isn't into Philosophy VERY heavily, and no, it is not because of my screen name: Zen and the Art of Making a Living by Laurence G. Boldt. For the less Philosophically inclined "What Color is My Parachute" is a good standby. Never forget their is a difference between having a career and having a life. You will be just fine Mark.

I think the better way to go is to be more like... "Ok man, I know what you think I'm gunna do... FREAK OUT. But I'm not, all I have to say is... whose coming with me"

I'm on board the "My job went away, and now I'm happier!' bus.
FOr quite some time I loathed my day job, but I knew what the economy was like, at least in my town. People were taking pay-cuts, nothing was available, it was too scary to just up and quit.
I pulled a lower-end Office Space and spent months trying to get fired for things like dress code (wearing a t-shirt with blatant profanity to the office), putting my feet up and eating at my desk, and showing up between 15 minutes and 2 hours everyday. For four months, nobody directly addressed it, save for the "You should keep an eye on that, mmm kay?"
Finally, after taking a break from m bad behavior for a month or so, somebody decides to write me up for the cumulative experience. Then we have a hurricane, in which the Governor declares that nobody go out unless it was an absolute emergency. My power goes out, I sleep in, and don't make it in for the MANDATORY OVERTIME during a STATE EMERGENCY.
I get in on Monday, and because of the company asking their employees to not just risk harm by going out in a storm, but to come in even if their homes were flooded because "there was nothing they could do about it now, and would need the money from extra hours to pay for the damages," I deicided this place was just evil.
In the morning I talk to my supervisor about putting in my 2 weeks. I spend the day casually packing my boxes between tasks, and that afternoon am asked away from my desk. I go to HR, they never actually tell me I'm fired, but just hand me a paper saying so and ask me to sign it. Nice touch.
They ask if I'll be okay, if I need anything, and seem surprised when I tell them my stuff is all packed. I explained that they just saved me two weeks of dreading every day.
SInce then, I've found two jobs that I love, making working 60-some hours a week actually something I want to do, not to mention financially pleasant. I've slept better, had less headaches, been less tempermental, and lost about 20 pounds.
It really can be a great thing, if you look at it right. It's like a really nasty break-up. Step back. Is that somebody you really could see yourself with?

Thanks for the support/help. Good to know someone else knows the Rental Blues.
I went up to ex-work and talk to ex-boss. They didnt have a tape of the days events, some how that was somebody elses fault who also got fired. So they have no proof of what did or didnt happen, expect for what they have on the computers. Bull Shit I know. Then she tried to lay down some line about how I wasnt "working out" and "didnt seem like I worked with the team" WHAT TEAM? I worked with one other guy who was my friend.
Besides the point. Anyway I was on my first 90 days so they could fire me at anytime or I could quit without giving a two week notice. So on my record it doesnt say anything bad (LIKE SUSPECTED STEALING) just says "He left"
Now to go look for work as a 300 a night gigglo, who only serves lonely 30-42 year old hot lonely house wifes.

I'm chiming in a little late, here, but I too, was fired about 4 years ago for the first time in my life. That means I worked for 11 years without getting fired from a job. However, when I see a student being beaten in the hallway and then the principal tells me it's a "cultural issue" that I can't understand (read: it was ok for this lady to beat her kid because they are black, it's not okay for me to report it because I am white), I report the incident to child services anyway, which gets me demoted and ultimately fired. I look on this as a blessing though, because it motivated me to go back to grad school, which I never would have done with a cushy job.
A friend of mine just got fired because his boss ran their company into the ground, and it was not his fault, but he still had to suck it up and take the hit. I've never even seen this kid show any emotion, butI ran into him after this happened and he was crying. He was really upset- he'd never been fired either, he just bought a house, and got married in August. Now, his wife is a CPA, so they will be ok for money, but still, people's jobs are their identities, at least in America. Think about it, what is the first question people usually ask you after you've been introduced? Usually, something like "What do you do?" So, of course losing a job is hard, but think about it like the Simpsons say-
Lisa- "Dad, did you know the Chinsese use the same word for crisis as for opportunity?"
Homer - "Of course! Crisitunity!"
This may be funny, but it will help, too. Just remember, it's not the end of the world.

I never got fired from a job, laid off, but not fired. And yes there is a difference.
You see, I was working as an intern (not a monica lewinsky type of intern) for a local radio station. Used to get up at 4 in the morning, help the morning show gather their information off abc prep and used to make copies, etc. Worked with the news girl (was the news assistant) then worked my way up to being morning show co-producer, mind you with no pay. When the station decided to move on back to Thousand Oaks, we were all let go and my hard work for 6 months seemed to not be worth anything, until my boss hands me a check for $100 bucks. You know what I bought with it, a pair of candies shoes and a marilyn monroe bag. Good times...good times...

I got fired from the first job that I ever had. I was working as a telemarketer for 8 hours a week. In my crazy 14 or 15 year old mind, this seemed like too much. I was working with my best friend and we both decided to "fudge" our time cards. We ended up both getting fired, apologized and got our jobs back, all in the same day. Pretty sweet.
The last job that I left was a corporation that went out of business. I felt so sick when I got the news. I had busted my ass to try to keep our store afloat while we were trying to emerge from bankruptcy. All for nothing. We were told that if we stuck around until the end, we would get severence bonuses (boni?) reserved vacation, sick pay. That was two years ago. It looks like I am finally going to be getting some money soon. Not the coupla grand that I calculated I was owed. But $900 out of the blue will still be pretty sweet. The best part though was getting out of retail, and into my cushy job where I can spend most of my time here.

I was laid-off from my last corporate job after I had worked harder than anyone else in my department. Unfortunately, I had been rewarded for that hard work with a higher salary than everyone else... so when they cut jobs they cut mine first.
They gave me an average get-the-fuck-out package (over $10K). /forums/images/icons/smile.gif

I might be laid off in march or april, or theres a slim chance they might keep me on. but hopefully I'll be let go, and then I can give my boss the finger because right now all I do is sit at my desk dreaming of bricking the windows, dousing the floor in flammable liquids and torching the place, or picturing my boss's brains splatter on the wall as his newly ventilated body slumps to the floor.

I used to have a suit and tie job working for Citizens bank. I worked in the central branch in Deposit Services. I had worked there for over a year as a temp. They offered for me to go direct and I turned them down because it involved a 50 cent decrease in pay, which still added up to a buttload more than I make right now. Marsellus Wallace told me pride would be fuckin with me and I didn't listen.
Well, a couple weeks later I drove to Kentucky to help a friend with his business for the weekend. I drove all night on Sunday to make it home on time to work at the bank. I called in late and they fired me.
It all made sense when I realized I was gnawing all over the hand that fed me.
