I'm going to keep it short and simple--do you like jazz?
If so, please lists the artists you would recommend to a jazz fan. I am open-minded, and looking to purchase some more jazz.
*I don't need any more Billie Holiday, Louis Armstrong, or Ella Fitzgerald.
Sincerely,
Your Droog

I do need to build up my Miles collection, thanks Ryall, I will have to pick that one up.
Thanks Remission and Matthew.
>acid jazz
Remission, what is this? I've never heard of it. Who are some 'acid jazz' artists?
And, anybody else have any suggestions? Doesn't seem like there are too many jazz fans at the Shoot..

[/ QUOTE ] "Bitches Brew" was the first Miles album that I heard, and I was blown away. "Kind of Blue" is easier to get into, more accesible, but "Bitches Brew" is great in a more out-there way.

I think classifying Harry Connick as jazz is kinda, well, wrong........I would classify him more as lounge music. I think jazz is a lot less vocal.

Would you equate lounge music with elevator music?
Honestly, I love Harry Connick, Jr. He is incredible--his style is so versatile, I think it is closest to jazz. Jazz has many different styles, so I don't see that as a faux pas, but I'm interested to know how you would define lounge music.

Bitches Brew was also one of my first Miles experiences. I had no appreciation for music outside Wierd Al Yankovic at the time so Bitches Brew just about scrambled my brain. That is one of those albums that is so out there and experimental that you can't even hear what is going on the first time -- it takes multiple listening sessions. Now, it is definitely some of my favorite Miles. I'd say we all agree Ryall's Kind of Blue suggestion is best.
OR, now that I think of it, you should buy:
http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B00000DB5B.01.LZZZZZZZ.jpg and that will do two things for you -- give you a taste of Miles's different sounds and what albums they came from and give you a taste of great jazz musicians who are listed in the liner notes. {Thelonious Monk, Herbie Hancock, John Coltrane, et al.}
For decent contemporary stuff with vocals....check out Martin Sexton (although he's considered folk), obviously Sade' and Norah Jones.

I don't get Norah Jones. She has a very cool "jazz" voice. But, the music is just too damned slow. I know I've made the "slow" comment before and been ridiculed for it. But I stand by it. Norah Jones voice makes me want to sing, but her music makes me want to sleep.

Yeah when Nora sings "Don't know why I didn't come. " I always think, just give me one chance.

Yeah, Norah Jones isn't exactly cruising music for me. She's more like "Rent a hotel room, light candles, sprinkle rose pedals all over, and suprise your girlfriend while Norah Jones plays on a portable CD player in the background" music. Try it; you might agree.

I think my wife might get a little bit mad at me if I spent so much time trying to surprise my girlfriend.
And if you meant that I should surprise my wife, I think she would be more pissed than surprised to find me sleeping on a bed of roses.
Sleeping because of the Norah Jones...get it..ha, ha.
If you're looking for some great jazz Guitar, take a listen to Eric Essex. It's really good.

I don't know, I guess I just think of jazz as more improvisational and instrumental, but I have to admit that I haven't listened to much Harry Connick. It jsut seems that he is more in the set instrumental, heavy vocal performance piece than the freewheeling, make-it-up-as-you-go style of jazz.

I couldn't think of how to say what I was thinking yesterday, but now I remember--he is very experimental and improvisational, he does seem more big band. I think he falls somewhere in between; his albums usually are one way or the other. You should contrast the 'When Harry met Sally' soundtrack with 'Red Light Blue Light'. Both are wonderful, but different. That's why I like him--you never can be sure what to expect, but it's always good.
And JJ, it's not like you need anyone's approval to dislike slower jazz. I think her music is more superficial--it's nowhere near as deep as Miles Davis' music, for example, but it's still very soulful and unmistakably jazzy. Sometimes I have to try to like someone's music, because I know the artist is good, I just may not be on that level yet. I'm not saying Norah Jones is beyond your comprehension--rather, sometimes you just have to listen to an artist and expect from them nothing but what they give to you through their music.

[/ QUOTE ] It's pretty tough to argue with a case this well represented. By that I mean there is obviously no way you can expect a lobotomized nine-year-old to have any taste or redeeming social qualities.

Harry Connick Jr. and Norah Jones are the same kind of jazzy music to me. Not that they sound the same at all, but that they are both vocal pop music with heavy jazz flavour. Mostly, they are both great to put on when you're cooking/eating a romantic meal and both will leave you humming their songs. Well, that's how it is for me anyway.

For some of the classics, check out anything by Count Basie. While it's a little harder to find recordings of him actually performing, his music is still great performed by any band. It's not ground breaking compared to modern jazz, but it is toe tapping goodness. He's my favorite old chart writer. "Straight Ahead" is one of my favs.

<font color="purple">I agree with you Karma on that note.
Nora Jones for me is one of those artists that I consider to be one of many talents. She makes great songs, has a great album and her voice is soothing on a hectic day at work. If you want a great sample, download the song ‘Turn Me On.’ It is amazing.
As for Connick, he has a great Christmas CD, but he isn't a Jazz artist. He is more of an adult contemporary artist. If you are going to put him in the Jazz category, then you might as well add john Mayer. They basically have the same kind of music, and both are really great.
