Can anyone offer buying advice on the Evil Dead dvds? There seem to be a billion versions for each film. Are any of these editions "definitive"? If it helps, I'm more interested in the content of the dvds than the packaging. (Although that rubber Book of the Dead is cool.)
Thanks.

I know that there is [and it might be limited, so don't quote me] an Evil Dead 1 out there that has a latex cover that looks just like the book of the dead. and i THINK 2 discs of it. it's pretty badass, it's running for about $40 thelast time i saw it.

okay I own a couple so here is my take on it. THese are the cream of the crop.
Evil Dead 1 (Book of the Dead) (aka Rubber Version)
Good SPF and commentry by Bruce Campbell (Very funny guy) and Sam Rami (Not funny)

Evil Dead 2 Yeah buy the one with Bruce on the left side and the Zombie Girl on the right. Have commentry and all that. http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/6305841861/qid=1068049535/sr=2-1/ref=sr_2_1/104-5837754-2623950
Army of Darkness Boom Stick Edition
Contains both cuts of the movie. Which is great. I bought the "Brown Bag" version of this and didnt get both cuts. I didnt to hear him say "Good, bad, I'm the guy with the gun" In this one you get both and has good SPF's

Thanks, Mark. I'll check those out.
Any dissenting opinions out there?
It's surprising that Raimi's commentary is not funny, considering how much humor he invests in his films.

If you wait long enough, another version will be out. The company that owns the rights to the dvds is the same company that owns the Halloween movies. They think that they can make more money by release different dvd versions every year or every other. It's quite annoying.
On the rubber version of the Evil Dead, there is a great documentary on the fans that Bruce Campbell did.

I have the VERY FIRST released version of the Evil Dead on DVD. The only special feature on it is the movie trailer hahaha !!!!! Anyways its special to me cause you can't find this version ANYWHERE NOW. It came in a clear plastic case with no book or anything in the front. Just shows ash holding a girl and an axe in his hand on the dvd.

The first Evil Dead is the only one I have, and it is the $35 one that comes in a book, it is pretty cool if you are a big fan, if you want tons of extra features it's only ok though. If you are only in it for the extra features pictured is a version with the same shit (except the book) as the book version.

there is one version where ash says 'i'm not that good' and the ending is different. That's about what I know to the different cuts.

*Possible spoiler, you have been warned *
Directors cut 2 CD's basically with threatrical 'happy' ending on one disc and on the drectors cut the 'ignorant ash screws up again' ending. in one he goes home and it ends with him taking on a deadite, in the other he is meant to take a certain number of drops of a sleeping elixr, but as he is about to take the correct amount he gets distracted by a rockfall and accidentally counts two drops as the same number, and then he oversleeps by a century.
