Hi, I'm a relatively new member here, and wanted to say hello first, and follow by asking if anybody knows why the History Channel does so many programs about the 20th century, in comparison with other periods of time, like for instance the Renaissance, or any of Asian history. I'd like to hear more about the Middle Ages, and less about the mechanics of guns, recent projects of the Army Corps of Engineers, Pearl Harbor, etc.
It is possible to talk too much about some aspects of history.
Welcome to the 'shoot.
A lack of good video might be a factor in The History Channel's lack of interest in some of the more interesting periods of human history... Today's TV addicts want big explosions as opposed to a slide show. I have seen bits and pieces of some French and Indian War stuff- some passable re-ennactments, but nothing to make me go a big blubbery one like "Last of the Mohicans" did...

Also, there were no Nazis before the 20th century. The history channel loves them Nazis. /forums/images/icons/wink.gif

You two make a good point. I think instead it should be titled something like "The 20th Century Channel" or "The World War Channel".
A bit frustrating for me--I love classical and medieval history, but am forced to watch programs about these periods on Discovery or The Learning Channel, etc.

Nazis get ratings. Maybe you could convince them that Emperor Ch'in was the world's first Nazi.

Not if Fox keeps hastling and trying to sue their own show.

Oh my lord, will you look at this. A new poster who not only had an intelligent and coherent first post, but who also did a little research before he posted. This could be the start of a disturbing trend.

Before you know it all the new posters will carry on in such a manner, AND WE will be the one posting the "Ball Lickers" threads and spelling ass with a Z!
(I dont know if I can say WE and Refer to everyone on here. I know I've been here awhile but without much posting but I feel I know what is going on. So on second thought I am sticking by my WE statement.)

I think that Nazis are to the History Channel what sharks are to the Discovery Channel or Half Baked is to Comedy Central. They see the numbers come in, and act accordingly.

Sad to say, you do. My ass is apparently only nice in that "I just want to be friends with your ass" sort of way.

Sigh.
Ok, I have a confession to make. I suffer from that debilating genetic deformity known as "flat-ass," also known as "wall-butt." Technically, I don't think it even qualifies as a bonafide ass. It's more like my back just kinda grows into my legs. It's all my fathers fault. Just like my addiction to heroin (don't ask.)

But calf implants are the worst.

I saw true life: I'm getting plastic surgery and was sad and sick to my stomach seeing them give this guy calf implants...yuck!
Or how about that new procedure "Abdominal etching"?
The look of six-pack abs without the work!
THAT is some sad, sad, sick stuff.

There's footage of events from the 20th century. There's no footage of older events, so covering anything earlier'd cost them a lot more to produce.
Ooh...I agree. I would love to see more Medievality and less triviality. Middle ages are the most interesting (and might I add romantic??). Wanna start a petition to the history channel?
Matt1
11-05-2003, 10:23 PM
Yeah, I know when I think romance I think... dirty dumb people with a penchant for Crusades and brutal torture? /forums/images/icons/confused.gif
You big lumox. I'm talking about all those brave knights. And an era when the men were men and the women were meek and humble and subservient and needlepointed tapestries all day. Hey.... wait a minute.......
Matt1
11-05-2003, 10:40 PM
I enjoy your use of the word "lumox" and your post in general. Therefore, you may live. /forums/images/icons/wink.gif

That is not accurate if you study female and male roles in history. Woman were not meek and subservient needlepointers unless they were in the tiny percentage of nobility. The non-noble women shared the working duties with the men in farming, blacksmithing, etc.
The concept of a meek and subservient wife is more a Victorian era to present manufactured convention used to control a woman's conduct. As manhood continues to lose ground because of the lack of "manly" work, these outmoded ideas of the Victorian era conduct books will continue to be forced upon a new generation of woman.
So /forums/images/icons/tongue.gif
I say we will have a real cool time tonight
