Naturally, the Japanese were ahead of us concerning DVD's. A couple of DVDs with music videos were the first released, and the first feature films on DVD were released on December 20th, 1996. These included The Assassin, Blade Runner, The Fugitive, and Eraser (Not Japanese films, but Warner Bros, oddly enough). The first US DVDs were released March 19, 1997, and were all IMAX movies. Warner Bros. quickly followed up with a few DVDs on March 24th, which I'm assuming were the same discs released in Japan, sans subtitles or dubbing.

Sleepers was one of the first because you have to flip it. Very annoying and they haven't re-released it.
First, two DVDs I bought were X-Men and Matrix.

I think "From Dusk til Dawn" was the first one I owned.

My first was "Icky Flix" by the Residents, a treasure trove of old videos and short films by the group. I opened the plastic case only to find that there was no dvd inside! Needless to say, the experience made me somewhat suspicious of this "new technology."
