View Full Version : best movie ever

The best movie ever is... Oh I dont know there is too damn many, but what are your favorites and why.
Some of mine: Trainspotting because it is a perfect adaptation of the book by Irvine Welsch. Blow, also a good adaptation and Johnny Depp nailed the role. Batman Returns, if you dont know why you need to watch it again, and again. Lastly Vanilla Sky, just because it blew my mind and makes me think everytime I watch it again. If you disagree with my picks, tell me why. I can take critisism.

I don't quite know about Vanilla Sky. It was an intriguing film, but I don't think they set up the twist enough. There weren't enough clues, y'know? If somebody is going to pull out the rug from under you, they should establish that there is a rug under you. It just seemed to come out of left field.
In a film like "The Sixth Sense" there were little clues dotted throughout as to the true nature of Bruce Willis' character. An intelligent viewer could conceivably figure it out before the reveal. I didn't feel that was true with Vanilla Sky.

Maybe the clues were not as obvious in Sky, but thats what makes the second viewing more interesting. You want to go back and see if it all adds up. As for the sixth sense, I had the privilege to see it before anyone spoiled the ending, and I never saw it coming. That is a great movie.

Yes well it also starred PeeWee Herman as a hair dressing drug dealer, and that alone is scary enough to avoid a second viewing.

The greatest movie ever is the godfather(no dicussion) closely followed by fargo, and pulp fiction
psychofiend
05-27-2003, 08:09 PM
I'm sorry Basktcas, but I am gunna have to disagree with Godfather being the best ever. For one reason, Godfather II was just alil better somehow, making it the best movie ever. It also proved that not all sequels have to suck. As for Pulp Fiction, you are so correct and Fargo was the [censored]! But never Forget the anime classic Akira.

The Godfather II was excellent, and also my favorite of the three. Can we pretend III didn't happen?
DarthMaulRat
05-27-2003, 11:35 PM
The best part about Godfather pt.II is that you don't have to see the first to enjoy or understand the film. Its great as a stand alone movie. Of course, its really a favorite of guys. Since 'best' is only an opinion, that means that our minority known as male only counts for a little less than half. In a vote, the world's best movie would probably be Sleepless in Seattle or some garbage.
Zens_7s

Sleepless in Seattle - a film used to torture unsuspecting boyfriends around the globe. If I could stomach sitting through it, I would have used it often and to great effect. /forums/images/icons/wink.gif

The film vanilla sky was a shorter and somehow better version, it seemed to give the film much more of a meaning and fair enough you lose out on jason lee. But Penelopé still goes topless in that version as well.

I can give you ten "maybe bests" but not one best.
1. the Maltese Falcon, Bogart's shining hour. His performance in this flic is the standard by which I personally judge actors.
2. Four Rooms, the final sketch (the Twilight Zone Scene) was shot in one continuous run of film with one camera. Absolute genius on the part of Quint to design and the actors to perform.
3. Halloween, John Carpenter's first hit movie. Shot for like twenty bucks and a half dozen day old donuts. It is the template for low budget terror and he gave us Jamie Lee Curtis.
4. Fight Club, love it or hate it it is an excellent idea. Taking the angst of a bunch of twenty something guys, frustrated with how boring post college middle-classdom is, and turning it into a phylosophical, cultural phenominon.
5. Star Wars, Lucas' inovations in this movie set the wheels in motion for all of the modern special affects we now see. Nuf said.
6. The Silence of the Lambs, Anthony Hopkins made Hannibal Lechter the single most frightening, realistic and recognizable movie murderer of all time. The acting across the board was stellar. The light was great, the screenplay was great, the score was great, well, you get the idea.
7. El Dorado, John Wayne's best movie in my opinion. But the real thing that made this one great was a young James Caan. Supporting actor to two of the biggest names on film at the time(Wayne and Mitchum) and he shined. Caan made what could have been just another western into a truly entertaining movie.
8. Planet of the Apes(1968), the most thought provoking and simply creepy movie concept up till that point. The costume and makeup work was great for the time, aswell.
9. Ocean's Eleven(2000), not to impune the Rat Pack, they are the coolest guys ever, but the new movie was just that, a new movie. I really hate remakes but this one was impressive. Clooney is my hero, Pitt ain't far behind him.
10. Psycho(1960), Hitchcock was the first real master of making his books into films. An author by god given gift and a film maker by heart he poored his erie vision on to 35mm as well as anyone since with the exception of maybe Steven King.

I prefer movies that leave you saying "That's it?! There isn't anymore??" For some reason or another, I just love movies where nothing happens or nothing is resolved - I like walking away from a movie feeling uncomfortable and unsatisfied with the conclusion. I appreciate that feeling much more than the one achieved when every little problem or twitch in the plot is neatly wrapped up by the closing credits. Seriously.
For this reason, I like The Virigin Sucides, Welcome to the Dollhouse, Magnolia, et cetera et cetera et cetera, and so on and so forth.
Zens_7s
07-13-2003, 06:12 PM
I also enjoy movies that leave me with complicated feelings. Life does not wrap up conflict in neat packages. I recently saw Laurel Canyon, a movie I loved and many people seem to hate. What complaint did I hear? You don't know what HAPPENS to Christian Bale's character. Here may be the big shocker; nothing may happen. The character, just like real people, may change nothing, learn nothing, and keep making the same mistakes over and over. Most moviegoers like things spelled out for them.
What I do not like is the recent trend of not resolving conflict specifically to generate sequals. Sitting in Spiderman, every member of the audience could read the "HEY WE ARE GOING TO HAVE A SEQUEL!" vibes.

Fear and loathing is a very well known movie, Thus the title cult classics. You see kids, cult classic or cult hit isnt just a catchy phrase reviewers used to describe a movie. It actually means movies that tank at the box office but have a rise in popularity in another forum like video or tv.

Holy shit! How did you know I was growing a beard?
Lessee here, I get paid to sit around and watch movies on TV, 50 is still a good 18 years away, my 1200 sq ft, two-bedroom apartment is on the second floor AND is as far away from my mother as one could geographically get without leaving the contiguous United States. I shaved my beard on my birthday, got rid of the cat almost a year ago and I only own about twelve comic books (a low number I'm ashamed of actually) Oh, and I'm not really a fan of chocolate.
Someone bent on world domination should know that jumping to conclusions and making false assumptions could lead to having your neck stretched by a long drop at the end of a short rope. Stupid ass... meh, supermodel... falls right in line with the stereotype. Except for the part about eating us all like mars bars.
I should stop posting five minutes after waking up... I'm not much of a morning person.

I thought I heard it was on the first Batman:TAS disc set that came out, but having not plunked down the money for it I could be wrong.

That's good, I hate to spread misinformation.
While browsing in a cd store the other day I came across a soundtrack for the Batman movie. I have the Batman soundtrack, but this one was different, so now I'm thinking that they have two different soundtracks for this movie. Weird that this movie has been out for so long and I'm just realizing this.
