ludacris, eminem, justin timberlake, jay-z, christina, brittney...all tools right? please take the time to write a 1 paragraph essay (7 to 8 sentences is mandatory) telling why you hate mtv so much, and what it does to our culture/teenagers.
(please do this...i'm an incredibly bored, sick kid. i have strep throat and mono at the same time. pretty f*ckin healthy right?)

How can you blame the mainstream for being the mainstream? That's like expecting oil company execs to be scrupulous politicians.
I could write a thesis on my spite of the mob mentalitly of humanity, how it reveals itself in incarnations such as MTV, and why I believe to be, on the whole, a pernicious force, but a 7 sentence bitch/whine about MTV seems trite.
EDIT: Yes, you're avatar's link's broken

All that MTV does is promotes the big artists and cuts the smaller artists down. Johnny Cash should have won that award but Justin had to go and beat him out. They only put Cash on there so they can say that they don't just automatically shun the country artists. I don't like the Dixie Chicks but I am just going to use them as an example. They topped the pop charts with I think all of their records but they were never even nominated. MTV is supposed to stand for "Music Television" but people now just think it stands for "Major Tools". It's sickening.

I don't think the question is whether MTV sucks, but since it at one point was cool, when exactly did it turn crappy?

I don't know if anyone but the consumer is a tool. Those who make the music and profit from it are exploiters. MTV used to be the edge, and now has leaped from it.

MTV used to be about music but it turned in to an E! channel. Unfortunately, some people never got the memo and are still watching.
I remember when MTV started- it was cool, back when cable tv was not in every house and there were actually good things to watch on it. My sister and I would run in after school and fire up the MTV and actually get to watch videos, yes videos! from three until my mom and her husband got home at five thirty and made us turn off that devil music- I can't tell you when it started to suck- it was a gradual decline that really didn't become apparent to me until 1993 when I was stationed in Europe and couldn't believe the crap they were cranking out over the airwaves. I got back stateside and realized MTV had transformed into something else- namely, a steaming pile of poop.
Now, I already went off on the Johnny Cash thing in another thread, but I would like to add here that I went out and bought that album the other day- it is simply amazing. It exposes the current MTV crowd for the hacks and charlatans that they are.

Now, MTV2 still plays videos and that channel does not cut them off after 30 seconds. What bugs me is how the MTV awards seperate MTV and MTV2 videos, as if what is on MTV is "better" music. MTV2 plays the "real" music.

Yeah, and I think another thing to give some thought to is the fact that MTV can't MAKE anyone watch something. MTV plays what they do because there are ratings involved, which means there is a demand for that B.S. The thing that pisses me off (if you have seen my profile, you know it does) is that MTV used to be "cutting-edge" and kind of rebellious and they always had something for everyone. 120 minutes, Top 20 countdown, (the old) Headbanger's Ball, Yo! MTV Raps, or just a hodgepodge of everything. Now, they're in the business of masturbating a pre-pubescent pseudo-culture for ratings.
The channel barely shows videos because reality shows and other programs have replaced them. They've had shows before like Remote Control, Liquid Television, Beavis and Butthead during times when I still considered the channel relevant, but it seemed to me that those shows still tied in to music and pop culture. Which brings be back to my original point: maybe the demand for this fecal matter reflects what defines pop culture now. Voyeurism, short attention span, mass market, showboating, irrelevant nonsense.
Martha Quinn, why did you leave us to die here?!

KARMA: Like someone said in another thread, people would, these days, rather watch someone go out and lives their lives for them instead of going out and doing it themselves. That is what's pushing all these reality shows over the edge.
RAZORBACK: I forgot about what I was thinking about MTV2. You have to pay extra for MTV2 when actually it should be switched around so all the crap is on MTV2.

Where to start on why I hate Mtv? Hmmm... Well, first of all, all the good stuff gets cancelled. I miss shows such as Daria and all those other funny cartoons like the one where they portrayed JFK as a dumb jock and Abe Lincoln as the skinny genious. I also hate how everything on Mtv if it is music, is rap. Why don't they play some good bands like Gwar instead of little a little [censored] who claims that all pop stars are faggots, even though he is, in fact a [censored]. I also hate how Mtv's spawn is better than Mtv itself, on average i will see 1 minute of Mtv a week flipping through channels, but i watch VH1 all the time. In conclusion, I hate Mtv and it's soimething that I ain't afraid to say.

I don't even see a reason to get worked up over MTV anymore. I've got my MTV2, Fuse, MTVJams. I'm happy. But, I'd be hella happier if I still had MTV-X.

Yeah, where's the sympathy for us non digital cable subscribers? I used to go to a friend's house all the time just to have MTV-X in the background. I was pretty pissed when I found out the channel was canned. Oh well, As long as radio is free, I'll be fine.

Don't get me started about radio. Radio is way worse than MTV.

Well, maybe radio sucks where you live, but I recieve about 30 stations where I live, meaning there's always somthing on. Oh, I'm sorry, I guess you hate radio because it has commercials. Maybe I should get XM radio! Oh wait, all that money going towards XM should be going towards digital cable, which I also don't have!
Stop trying to put a brother down.

Maybe radio is good in PA, but not in Colorado Springs. This is the layout here:
1 station - Rock
1 station - Christian
2 stations - Oldies
2 stations - Country
3 stations - Top 40
3 stations - Classic Rock
It is just sad. Only one rock station, and they think that since they have been around for 25 years, they still need to play songs from 25 years ago; inspite of the fact that there are 3 classic rock stations. 3! And, no hip-hop/urban station. It is extremely frustrating.

People are listening to [censored] MTV-X?? Why?? It is shitty now, I miss when MtvX was a rock station now it's shitty little rap bullshit.

There is no MTV-X. That is what we are complaining about. MTV got rid of MTV-X, the rock station, and replaced it with MTVJams, the hip-hop station. I like MTVJams, just not as much as I liked MTV-X.

I just put on my digital music channels and listen to exactly the genre I want to hear. I mostly listen to channel 810 (which is hard rock I think) and jump around some of the R&B, country and jazz stations. I love my digital cable (plus, I get to watch TechTV 24/7).
