Silent Bob did to much talking in Chasing Amy

Kevin Smith movies are funny. One day Clerks will be my favourite movie then the next it's Chasing Amy. It varies, you know?
The strongest one would have to be Chasing Amy. It's got the most heart to it.
The funniest is a tie between Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back and Clerks.

Putting them in my favourite order 1 being fave 5 being least fave.
1)Chasing amy, because it isn't all slapsticky
2)Mallrats because its the first I saw of the five
3)Clerks, A chewing gum sales rep causes a war against cigarettes, you know its only to get better from here on /forums/images/icons/laugh.gif
4)J&SBSB, nicely wraps up the five and send them on their way and it has Shannon Elizabreasts /forums/images/icons/smile.gif
5)Dogma, its a good film but I just see it as sort of the weakest. maybe cause I aint too fond of religion, anyway these are my order of preference and thus not debatable /forums/images/icons/tongue.gif

In order from best to worst... (followed by random observations)
1) Mallrats ("You have three nipples!?" heh)
2) Dogma (God is a Canadian, oh yeah, we rule!)
3) Chasing Amy (This movie made me sad)
4) Clerks (My love for you is like a truck BERZERKER!)
5) J&SBSB (mmmmmmmmm Shannon Elizabeth)

1. Dogma. Mocking religion is such a great idea because your always gonna piss some one off.
2. Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back. Most vulgar of all the five. I think that movie must of set a record for saying the word [censored] the most times.
3. Mallrats. Definately Jason Lee's best role ever.
4. Clerks. Great movie. It started it all. "Berzerker!"
5. Chasing Amy. Not the best but still funny. Especially the Black Rage speech at the beginning. "[censored] Lando Calrissian!"
Thats How I'd rank them on a scale of 1-5.

Just to makesure you understand what Mockery is. I got you the definition of a the word.
One entry found for mockery.
Main Entry: mockˇery

Function: noun
Inflected Form(s): plural -erˇies
Date: 15th century
1 : insulting or contemptuous action or speech : DERISION
2 : a subject of laughter , derision, or sport
3 a : a counterfeit appearance : IMITATION b : an insincere, contemptible, or impertinent imitation <makes a mockery of justice>
4 : something ridiculously or impudently unsuitable
I hope things are clear for you now, on what is considered mockery.
Razorback
04-20-2003, 12:52 AM
I didn't need to look the word up, I am well aware of its meaning. You, however, having faced the dictionary definition STILL don't understand that "Dogma" is not a mockery of religion. It is a humorous homage.
RB
Tuskinashi
04-20-2003, 03:10 AM
Sorry Razor, but Catholicism WOW! and the Buddy Christ are mocking religion.
Does the plot of Dogma mock religion? No. But there are instances of it being mocked. So you are both wrong.
Razorback
04-20-2003, 03:55 AM
Are their instances of sardonicism in the movie? Sure. However, the movie is not making a mockery of religion. That was the point.
RB
Omaru
04-20-2003, 07:41 AM
something that is part of the movie would make the movie in general mock it, if you have a copy, somehow encode it to a avi or something, cut out said mockery peices, then your copy of the film would not be a mockery in any way, as it is the film has mocking peices which is part of the film, ergo... The film mocks religion /forums/images/icons/tongue.gif

the best has to be mallrats hands down. jay and silent bob is second though. dogma, clerks, and chasing amy. chasing amy was not as funny as it should have been

04-24-2003, 02:16 AM
Honestly Kevin is tooooo gimmicky in Jay and Silent Bob... I think the best part of that movie was the bonus material with judd nelson. Chasing Amy is great.. but amy's character lacks substance, and the real star of that movie is jason lee. Mall Rat is with out a doubt the best in my opinion. Dogma... pissed me off cause Bartleby could have walked through the door 15 times before god even got there.
Clerks .. and mallrats are his best (again this is just an opinion, and probably means dick anyone anyhow, so take it lightly.) The clerks cartoon series was pretty cool.. probably would have lasted longer with proper PR.
So there you have it.. my justice to most of his movies... I hope Jersey girl isnt too spiced up with confetti.

#1 Clerks (Always gunna be first)
#2Mallrats
#3Chasing Amy
#4Jay and Silent Bobo Striken the [censored] back
#5Dogma (I still think Bartelby could have made it thru the church arch like 15 times before god could have stopped him)
They are all pretty ok movies.. but this is the way i've rated em.. Im actually wondering if anyone else has placed them in this order.
Anyone think the Kevin Smith might write something on a different level.. or is he gunna keep pumping smoke in our cracks?

He is a writer. In his most riveting work, Rooted in Barbarous Soil: People, Culture, and Community in Gold Rush California (California History Sesquicentennial Series) Kevin managed to lure thousands of fans to this site.
What really turned me on to MPS was Kevin's discussion of the "mercurial economy [swinging] from boom to bust and back again, rendering everyone's fortunes ephemeral." Kevin Smith rocks!

Last I checked...and I do...often...Harvey W. is still being a PITA and is dead set against Jason as Fletch on principal (read:Jason's inability to star in a film that makes any bank whatsoever, at least recently). There's been mention (by Miramax/Harv) of some other "bankable" Askew Alumni that they'd like to see cast (names omitted to protect the inappropriate). Kevin has dug in for the duration insisting that he won't do Fletch Won without Jason. To make a long story short (I know, too late) this is all far from over...
THX1138
07-16-2003, 05:47 AM
That's easy! All of them! I don't think I could make the hard choice of just one. But they are all good for their own reasons.
Clerks- Low budget, movie school, and paved the way for the rest. "37! slurp slurp slurp"
Mallrats- The comedy just never ended and also who can forget Stan Lee. "Would you like a chocolate covered pretzel?"
Chasing Amy- Anything that has Kevin Smith and Jason Lee in it will be good. Also, it ended on a dark note. "What's a neubian?"
Dogma- Two angels trying to unknowingly end existance, and J&B are prophets what could be better? "But you didn't say God bless you when I sneezed!"
J&SBSB- The cameos were enough, Carrie Fisher, Mark Hamill, Wes Craven but for those who can't see it for that must I go back as far as Mallrats. The end of Mallrats, the end song starts to roll (Weezer) and you see J&B with Suzanne. We finally get the story as to why the hell they had that monkey. "The sign on the back of the car said creatures of Hollywood you dumb f**k!!!"
So there you have it folks. Oh and as for the film some were eluding to Jersey Girl I don't know how many are going to like it. Smith says it isn't like his other films not even Amy. So some of you may as well unsubscribe now.

I agree with Razorback about Mallrats. The others are great. If I were before a firing squad and had to rate them, however, this is the order I'd give:
1. Clerks
2. Jay and Bob
3. Dogma
4. Chasing Amy
5. Mallrats
Please don't write me and say anything stupid...
By the way, Dogma, in my opinion, isn't a 'mockery' of religion. Seems to me to be commentary, and pretty serious at that. What's so crazy about God being a woman, and several fallen angels being pissed about what happened? Maybe the Muse being a stripper was mocking, but I liked it, I wasn't offended, and I know religious people who like it.
Some people take offense at anything, because it's their mission in life to stay pissed at the world. Others are just too ignorant to understand that there's an underlying meaning to movies like that. If you don't know a lot about Christianity, you can easily get lost in the allusions, but I am really glad KS made it. It is just another example of how much substance there is to his movies.

The best Kevin Smith movie hasn't been made yet. His career has far from peaked.

It is a movie about religion, using comedy and drama to forward a specific story (about two angels trying to get back into Heaven). If Smith is mocking anyone or anything, it would be those who think his movie is mocking religion.
It is a movie that embraces religion, it does not sneer at it. If you see something else in the story then you are manufacturing intent.

I'm not manufacturing anything and this movie is not embracing religion, it is making fun of it. The Buddy Christ? Catholicism Wow? Come on! You're gonna say that this is not mockery? How about the "discontinuation" of the crucifix? All of this is poking fun at Catholicism... aka, mocking it, not embracing it. What is being embraced in this movie is the belief in the existance of God and his or her almighty power. Belief in God, by itself, is NOT a religion, it is simply a belief. Religions - man-made organizations - do their best when they skew this belief for their own purposes. (Of course, this is only my opinion and, well, you know what opinions are... one of the only things you can truly call your own.)

09-01-2003, 05:36 PM
I read the Merrium-Webster definition and it doesn't say anywhere that belief in God is a religion. It does state that religion is made up of a system of beliefs, but not just the belief itself. That's how I read it, but if I read it wrong, then so be it, but I read it a few times and I still read it the same way.
My own opinion - which I am very much entitled to and does not make me right or wrong - is that I don't believe that the belief in God is an actual religion, I believe it is the basis for religions. Different religions believe in God in different ways and they practice in different ways, but it all comes down to the fact that they all believe in God (well, most of them anyway). But again, this is my opinion and I am not in any way trying to impose it on anyone nor am I trying to say that I'm right and everyone else, including Merrium-Webster, is wrong. That's not the case here. I am just a free-thinking individual who's not afraid to speak her mind.
We could go on and on about this, but why? I'm not right or wrong and neither is anyone when it comes to opinions. And, discussing religion is not a good thing to get into because it always leads to heat and arguing. I don't want to get into arguing on these boards, I'd rather make friends instead. I accept anyones opinions about any subject matter; I would hope that it goes both ways.
Besides, this was a movie... a comedy... it made me laugh and I enjoy it everytime I watch it. Isn't that what's the real deal here?
Ciao for now!

The "buddy Christ" and "discontinuation" is not a mocking of Catholicism but a joke about these characters within the religion who leave Pandora's Box unlocked by trying to be "in fashion" or "in generation."
The entire bases of the movie is the Catholic religion (as well as the reality of other religions basing the rules of the Universe) and so why would Smith be mocking it? It is the foundation of his story. If it is anything it is an homage to religion.

Whatever....
My opinion is still that this movie is embracing God - not Catholicism. I see is as making fun of Catholicism, not holding it high in honor. But that's just how I see it... it doesn't really matter, it's just a movie, a work of fiction, something to entertain the masses. It sure did entertain me.

His overall scope is about all religions fitting into the universal rule of God's law; that God has to adhere to religious law, no matter how idiotic it may be or the fact that it might destroy reality.
To be a mockery of any religion, Smith would have to actually aim to prove that some part of it is a sham, but his story makes it a point to say that all aspects of the religion (even those that might be considered "shams") are part of the rule of God's law.
We could say that Smith is "mocking" a specific Catholic church, but not the entire religion. I think his movie shows a love for Catholicism, even with all of its faults.

I see what you are saying and I understand your point. I still believe that this movie does mock - or at least pokes a lot of fun at - all of Catholicism. There are quite a few lines in the movie that led me to that conclusion. I do sort of agree with you that Smith does exhibit a "love" for this religion since he is a practicing Catholic and anyone who actively practices a religion would love it, I suppose. I was raised Catholic but have long since given it up and don't practice it or any religion so all the joking and what I will call "mockery" (even though you may not) in this movie made it all the more fun for me to watch. Anyways, like I said, it's just a movie.

Ah, we can finally breathe and realize we're all talking about the same thing.
and...
"b (1) : the service and worship of God or the supernatural" That doesn't mean it's orgainized, systematic or labeled.
"2 : a personal set or institutionalized system of religious attitudes, beliefs, and practices." So, you could say a personal set of beliefs regarding the service and worship of God or the supernatural is a religion. By any stretch of the imagination, that would mean having the belief in God at all is religious.
I'm not trying to change what you think, just saying to be careful when you try to use your opinion as fact. No harm intended.

My last comment on this particular subject:
Karmattack said: "I'm not trying to change what you think, just saying to be careful when you try to use your opinion as fact. No harm intended."
I never - NEVER - tried to use my opinion as fact. Never once did I say that I am right and everyone else is wrong. I don't do that. I know you don't know me, but one thing about me is that I do not state facts unless I am absolutely sure of them and they are written in stone or such. That definition - to me - still doesn't say that belief in God is a religion. That is how I see it and if you see it another way, then that is fine, you have every right to see it anyway you want.
And, although I understand you intended no harm, you were the one who set out to prove that I was wrong. I never said I was right, I only stated my own personal non-imposing opinion. It's not right or wrong, it's just an opinion.

Let's just agree to disagree; we both have our "opinions" and neither you nor I are right or wrong... and sometimes, even dictionaries are off too, I can't tell you how many times I've seen different definitions for the same word in different dictionaries.

Hello and welcome to the Movie Poop Shoot message board! Disparaging remarks regarding sexual orientation are not welcome here, and neither are you if you continue to use them. Consider this your official warning.
Also, I wonder if you realize how you come across to people when you champion free speech in one post and then want to censor talk of religion in the next.

I'm just glad you and Tom posted right here or else I might have missed a chance to ban this Whiteblack idiot.
I thought maybe things were better and I could uncensor a few words and not play the strict parent, but I can see that with people like this, I might have to go back to the ol' V-chip.

I agree. Jay and Silent Bob Strike back was wickedly funny. But I must say Clerks has got to be the best movie ever. That movie tells exactly what it's like to be a clerk. But not many of us have a guy drop dead in the restroom /forums/images/icons/grin.gif ...the average day of a clerk never goes so far as necrophilia. Brilliant!!!

Agreed. And the moment anyone says they didn't like it just because of Leo is the moment they show that ignorance. Not only did he do some of his best work in it, but it was directed by the fella who directed Trainspotting and 28 Days Later (movies I'm sure the same people would talk about loving). Plus, with the direct correlation to Apocalypse Now and Underworld on the soundtrack, I can't NOT love The Beach.
Razorback

When I first saw it I thought "Wow, this is an homage to Apocalypse Now." One of the most underrated movies in the past 10 years. It is also a great lesson in sociology.

I think the best kevin smith films in order of my own personal opinion ( more of a laughin opinion than n e thin else)
1) jay and silent bob strike back
2) Mallrats
3) Chasing Amy
4) Dogma
5) clerks
I also think that with out jason lee or jason mews these films would not be as succesful

The Kevin Smith movies are all brillent and i don't exspect any less from Jersey Girl, though it's a love movie, I will support it. But as for his other movies they are as follows:
1. Dogma- Nothing is better than a shit monster
2. Mallrats- You stupid bastard
3. Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back- Fuck, fuck, fuck
4. A Night With Kevin Smith- That Prince thing gets me everytime.
5. Chasing Amy- I love the 4 way road thing.
6. Clerks- Still really good, but not nearly the best, BEZEKER!

Although I'm unable to fulfill your fantastic request for autoerotic behavior, I am keen to know both what the typical "ass budget" for a Hollywood production is and what percentage of the total funding it represents. Make good with the information and your death will be swift.

I think "ass budget" refers to the money they have to spend on butt doubles for people like Jay Mewes who are too shy to show their real cheeks in a movie. Either that or it's applies to porn movies.
