I had a dream once where my computer told me no one loved me

then I woke up. but for a second there I thought it was a real screen, and that no one loved me.

when my isp has gone down in the past. its tried connecting and says I have an incorrect, its usually resolved itself around 8 hours later.

Mine was when the screen said: System Shutdown Due To Unkown Virus. This was when I restarted the computer after downloading material that was innappropiate, you would say.

Speaking of dreams, I had this f*cked up dream where I was giving a presentation on Power Point and pop-ups kept coming up and end up shutting down the computer.

Yea, I've lost my OS before, but I believe my worst message was a pop-up message to the effect of...

"Sorry, System Restore could not be loaded."

I believe that's the only time I have ever screamed "F-K YOU!" at my computer.

Windows worked, but Explorer refused to load, and I had tried to get system restore up by finding the location of the rstrui.exe and running it manually through task manager. No dice.

That meant reformating my hard drive, deleting every save file, mp3, and English Term Paper in the process /forums/images/icons/frown.gif

That is why (at worst) I always have at least two hard drives... if I can see the main partition (and any other partition) then I save what I need onto the other hard drive before formatting. I have lost "everything" only once and that was very little.

At least have 2 partitions and save all the stuff you NEED to the partition where the OS does not reside. Then save it to CD... then put the CD in your fireproof safe. /forums/images/icons/smile.gif

i remember this one time i downloaded something from my uncle, and i went to open it to find that it was asking me if i wanted to delete windows. it didnt allow me to say, "No" then everything started deleting off the drive, and the computer went black...

then, the words, "Thank God It's Just A Game." appeared.

i almost had a heart attack until i found out it was a joke file. man did i hate my uncle for that.

In a world before Windows....

One deeply depressing day a long time ago, I turned on my computer and the scariest most fatalistic statement came across the screen. "Cannot find internal drive." I rushed it to the computer hospital, but alas, it was gone. I gave it a good funeral and buried it in the dumpster. Damn Michangelo virus.

My favorite like this was something a friend sent me to download. It was called "ghost" or something to that effect. After I downloaded it, the cd drawer would open sporadically accompanied by a tongue-spitty noise.

Three years of writings, scripts, short stories, emails, etc, gone all at one when the processor popped and wiped the allocation files, so the data was there in some unfindable way.

I thought, "lucky I made backups of everything!" My quirky computer had somehow closed most of the discs in a way that made them only recognizable on the dead pc, much to nearly everyone I know's confusion.

I still have all of the stuff, and someday willget it extracted, but man oh man what a way to crush a soul.

Oh, one remote server crash almost cost me my whole website. That you Google caching!

There are services that will retrieve all your data, no matter the condition or manner of "destruction", for a fee. /forums/images/icons/smile.gif

I know. I just don't have that fee at this point, so I will forge on with new stuff. There are only two things I absolutely didn't want to lose, really.

I had some really great ideas mapped out for a Predator 3 script, a great intro, and a whole ton of notes written in a fit of inspiration, and I had 50 pages of a script I had struggled with for a year before it finally clicked. Just before I lost it all, I reread it and was more satisfied with it than most stuff I've done, and it wasn't the sort of thing I normally write.

I just can't bear to start from scratch on either. I can wait, though...
