I have no music ability at all. My friend tried to teach me, but gave up.

Yeah, but not well at all. Coincidentally, when this site started, all my practice time fell to about zero. I have a Fender acoustic and also a little Fender electric. I play both equally well, which is to say, hardly at all. My go-to is usually "Redemption Song" by Bob Marley because it's easy and makes the girls get all swoon-y. I have a ton of tabs I've downloaded and basically need to find time to start playing more. Maybe I should take down the message boards to free up some time...nah...

Does knowing how to play "Stairway to Heaven" count as "knowing" how to play?

Over the years I have sold off or given away equipment... I barely play anymore. I still own an old Yamaha Pacifica 921 which is plugged into a Peavy 5150 stack. I jam out some old Metallica tunes sometimes... some Hendrix, Rage Against the Machine (usually I will pull out "Know Your Enemy" since it is a fun jam song), Fear Factory (Descent), loads of Pantera and Soundgarden; you know, a lot of stuff.
As for originals, I was in a few bands and have written over 20 songs... of which maybe 2 are worth listening to twice. /forums/images/icons/laugh.gif

I've had a couple of guitars in my day, but the ones I've kept are my first acoustic, my Strat-Acoustic, and my Fender Telecaster.

I see your point. My go to is usually 'Allison' by Elvis Costello. It's a tad more difficult than your average ballad, so when some punk tries to play 'Every Rose has its Thorn' you can whip out 'Allison' and they think you're God.
And if I'm ever in trouble with Ms. Zens, I just play 'Fire' with a Bruce Springsteen strain in my throat and all is forgiven.

I was thinking about getting a stratacoustic, but I keep on hearing all these bad comments about electric/acoustic hybrid models. As far as getting the opposite sex to take notice, I just go with some DMB, usually "Christmas Song" or "Where Are You Going."

the Stratacoustic is great for just jamming at home and all. I'd never actually use it for anything important.

As for the topic; I play very, very badly. However, I have just started working on it again due to the urging of the band I sit in with on piano.
1) Acoustic, Electric, or both -- how many? What brand/model of guitar(s)?
I am currently working with a 30+ year old Harmony Sovereign acoustic. My grandfather was a professional guitar player, and it was his.
3) Top 5 songs you love playing?
I have not reached the point where I love playing anything yet, because it all sucks. I will get back to you when something in tune forms.

A couple of years ago I decided to learn and did a 10 week course and can now play about as well as I did before the lessons. Even after the 10 weeks the only song I could play was the one we learned in class - Rivers of Babylon (I kid you not!) /forums/images/icons/grin.gif

Yeah, I play too.
1) Acoustic, Electric, or both -- how many?
I have and play both, although even after years of playing I can only play one at a time.
2) What brand/model of guitar(s)?
Fender El Strat. (Mexican)
Gibson ES335.....copy. A copy of one.
3) Top 5 songs you love playing?
Castles Made of Sand, Jimi
Everything else is a close second.
4) ever write any original tabs?
I've written music, but never in any notation form. I'm self taught and can't read music. I can, but I can't sight read. If I can't figure it out, then I don't play it. Stupid, right? It really limits my catalogue quite a bit.
But I was feral child, born dyslexic and raised by a family of otters, so the higher learnin' never came easy, if at all. Oh, I tried to learn. But the devilish little bastards kept leaping around from staff bar to staff bar, mocking me. Giving me explicit instructions to snuff high ranking government officials, with the promise of fame and the heart of my beloved.

I have a Bass but I only know how to play the Baseline to Only in Dreams by Weezer. That is such a great song. Oh and I have no clue what brand it is.
I play some.
But I'm really a singer.
Used to sing in some bands. I did'nt make it, but there's always a chance. But at least my drummer did! /forums/images/icons/grin.gif

2) What brand/model of guitar(s)?

3) Top 5 songs you love playing?
Don't play anyone else's work, just my own.

I play guitar, do you? Yuh huh.
1) Acoustic, Electric, or both -- how many? I have one of each.
2) What brand/model of guitar(s)? An acoustic Yamaha (technically acoustic electric) and an electric Squire Strat
3) Top 5 songs you love playing? Hmmm...tough...I'm gonna go with (in no order)
1)"Brian Wilson" by Barenaked Ladies
2)"Baby One More Time" (I play it acoustic like the cover by Travis)
3)"The Golden Age" by Beck
4)"I Wanna Be Your Boyfriend" by The Ramones
and my current favorite will be 5) "Come Back Home" by Pete Yorn
4) ever write any original tabs?
I haven't written them but once in a while I'm clever enough to figure out a song myself. I taught myself "Walk On Me" by Ben Kweller for example. Right now I'm trying to put together a few new songs to do open mic at a local coffee shop. Right now I'm working on "I Am The Highway" by Audioslave.

careful where you leave a guitar, some bed jumping idiot might lose their balnace, fall backwards onto it and snap it clran on the spine. And for the record, i was the idiot. to make matters worse, this was 3 years ago, not 10.
